Saving/burning dvd/cd

How can I manipulate my work after I save/burn it to dvd? Is there a way to save it on cd so I can come back later and work on it again? I have noticed that once I burn it to DVD I can no longer work with it.
Thanks

When you burn video, iDVD and similar authoring tools encode your video to MPEG2 and burn the DVD. While this can be converted back to DV (using a utility such as MPEG Streamclip) the result will be a loss of quality and, perhaps more importantly, the converted file will not be usable with your original FCE project file.
The only way to do it and preserve the original quality of your video and use your original FCE project file is to use the Finder to burn your clips as files to DVD media (aka data DVDs as opposed to playable DVDs). But understand that DV video takes ~13GB per hour so you would be limited to 15-20 mins of clips per single-layer DVD.
It's too cumbersome a method to use for future editing. You will be better off getting a good external firewire hard drive to archive video you intend to re-edit in the future. Save your FCE project file and all source material (video clips, photos, music, etc). You should also save the last 3-4 of your autosave project files as backups. You don't need to bother saving render files or cache files.

  • I repeatedly get "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshow" message.  This process is the same on my iMac, MacBook and another iMac.  I have been burning dvd's int he same way for the past 12 months using the exact same steps successfully.

I keep getting "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshows" message.  I have been burning DVD's in exactly the same way for the past 12 months and mostly on my MacBook which is 3 years old.  Obviously I'm using iDVD.  I purchased an iMac about a year ago and moved to use this for dvd burning without problem.  A few months ago (approximately) I started to experience problems with burning with the error message above.  I tried everything including starting the whole process from scratch right down to capturing the movie clips from my video recorder into iMovie, then using them in iDVD.  Still the same message came up.  I lost count of how many times I repeated the process with different clips and variations and the same thing happened.  This was also the case with my MacBook and my husband's iMac.
After taking both of mymac's tothe service centre, having new optical thingys put it and even a new hard drive on my iMac along with a new DVD burner the same thing happened.  They told me it must be the process that I am using that is incorrect!
I took my 27" iMac to an apple shop and asked them to assist me while I use the same technique as I always had.  The same message came up so they tried using my clips in one of their mac's.  The same message. They tried it with different clips and the same message.  The only way we could get theirs to work was with a magic DVD which did not produce what I needed and was limited with only one page.
I now cannot use any of my Mac's for the intended purpose that I bought them for - to produce good media for my work!  It was suggested that I purchase some non Mac software to burn DVDs which defeats the object of having a mac with iDVD in my opinion.  I have a book on iDVD which is very informative and have followed the process to the letter and checked all the trouble shooting and still no remedy.  It was mentioned that an up-date may have caused the problem on all my macs.
I feel that this issue should be addressed by Apple as a matter of correctness.
I now find that on the net there are many posts in forums and such like with exactly the same (almost word for word) problems.  Please Apple, keep/regain your good name and sort this out.

Thanks Bengt W for your attention to this matter.  So much appreciated.  And thanks for putting me right on the aim of forums (new to this).  Although, you may regret asking for more information.  I've added everything I can below.
The process I used is as follows:
Import recorded clips of between 5 and 15minutes each from my video recorder into i
Edit the clips (remove unwanted start and endng)
Add title to front of clips
‘Share’ them to ‘movie’ (export using QuickTime)folder in .mov format individually
Open iDVD and ‘create new project’
Select ‘favourite’ theme that I have set up forall my work dvd’s (this has been used successfully many times and I’ve triedwithout using the favourite them).
Add 2 submenus for each group of clips
Select submenu  - drag and drop between 3 – 6 clips in each of the twosubmenus
    Change title colours on clips
Dragand drop image into drop zones where required
In‘map’ view I check for any yellow warnings before burning to disc
In an attempt to remedy the problems I’ve tried the following:
    Try new DVD discs
Try different themes (favourites and standardones)
    Change images in drop zones
Start whole process again even from importingfrom camera again
Two other completely different computers (iMacand MacBook) with iDVD
Go to apple shop and use their computers to doin iDVD
Try with one clip and no menu pages added
Use a clip that I already have that did notoriginate from my camera
    Turn computer off and restart
    New hard drive
    New optical lense (thing)
    New DVD burner
Saving to disc image rather than dvd disc
    Other points:
I also have a ‘flip’ and ‘iPhone’ whereI’ve imported footage camera which, although limited, records and makes videoclips and burns them to DVD through iDVD without problem.
For example, I have just gone through steps 5 - 11 using some clips that were already imported from my iphone to iPhoto and dragged across.  I used a theme that I've used before which has failed and added one sub menu page where the clip went.  It burned to disc image successfully.
The startup disc, I believe will have no space issues asit’s a new hard drive with no use apart from this.  That could have been an issue before (I didn’t check it) butnot now.

  • Out of focus photos after burning dvd.

I am using Magic iDVD in iDVD 08. Have created a movie with photos imported from iPhoto. All appears to be well when I preview the movie prior to burning it (i.e. photos are clear and sharp, and burning process appears to go as it should). But when I view the burned DVD all the photos are quite out of focus. This occurs whether I watch the DVD on my iMac or TV. Am using Philips DVD-R discs. Have tried different encoding settings with no difference in results.

It looks to me like the flash fired for the shot, but the camera also kept the shutter open for a fairly long time to reach optimum exposure.  Can you check and see how long the exposure was?  It appears that the bright, flashed parts of the photo are sharp, so I don't think it's an optical problem.  The flash froze some of the image, but handheld camera shake created the blurring.  Try a similar shot on a solid tripod.  Or reset the exposure so that it's short enough to handhold and try again.  I'll often do dusk or nighttime shots on aperture priority setting with a flash to light up someone in the foreground.  The shutter stays open long enough to light up the dark, unflashed areas in the background, leading to a long exposure, so I have to use a tripod and have a model that can stay very still.  Otherwise the photos end up looking like your shot.  As far as saving the photo that you posted--it would take a huge amount of effort by someone that's very good with Photoshop.

  • Music dropping in burned DVD

I hope someone can help. I tried just about everything that everyone has suggested so my DVD will burn properly, but my music keep dropping at the same point in every DVD that I've burned.
This is what I've done so far:
Made slideshow in iPhoto - played beautifully for a Relay For Life event. People want copies.
Shared to iDVD from iPhoto Slideshow. iDVD kept crashing at startup.
Went to Apple Discussions and took someone's advice to reinstall iDVD, in the meantime,
Sent to Quicktime Player (played beautifully). However, can't burn from QTP
Saved as .mov file, but iMovie doesn't import it as video
    Reinstalled iDVD
Made DVD from iPhoto album (not slideshow) and iTunes Playlist (previewed and it played beautifully again).
Burned DVD, played it - audio dropped for 2-6 seconds in two of the songs
    Went back onto Apple Discussions
Figured out that I should re-format my music to AIFF files which I did.
    Edited project with new music
    Burned another DVD (Maxell DVD-R)
Again audio dropped at same spot again
    Went back onto Apple Dicussions
Took suggestion to saved as image file.
Burned to DVD at 2.4x (my lowest setting) for 5th time and music still drops at the exact spot on each copy I burn.
Right now I have the same project in .dvdproj, .mov and .img
I made a DVD about 18 months ago, when I was new to Mac and it was the easiest thing ever. I never had anything close to this happening, or I would never have attempted it again.
I'm out of ideas - can anyone give me other suggestions.
    Thanks!!!

Can you confirm you are using iDVD 7 from iLife 8?
This will not run on Tiger, it requires Leopard.
If you are running iDVD 6 you are in the wrong forum, but we will carry on here!
Previewing in iDVD is not the same as previewing the final version prior to burning.
To preview the final version, without wasting another DVD blank, go to File menu and click on Save as Disk Image.
This creates the final version and does all the rendering etc short of the actual burn.
If you open DVD Player you can play that Disk Image as though it was a DVD.
If everything works, only then burn to a DVD. In this case use Disk Utility to burn the DVD - or better still, invest in Toast.
As for the audio drop-outs, are you sure you are using AIFF files that are not DRM copy protected?

  • Quality Issues Burning DVD's

I am new to iDVD and iMovie.
I am hoping to be able to burn a DVD that will play on a
standard DVD player hooked up to a TV.
I made a 4 minute movie in iMovie,
    then onto iDVD...
    Saved movie to HDD
Burned DVDs via disk utility (one at all 3 speeds)
    Used high quality DVDs.
    The DVDs I created...
only the 4x would play on my standard DVD.
It plays in black and white, not color.
    It stops and starts frequently.
Do I have any other options on my Mac?
Should I copy the movie to miniDV and take it to
    a company that burns DVD's?
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
I posted this question in the iMovie forum as well...
    Thanks in advance,
    Kell

What kind of media are you using? Are you using Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R and burning from a disc image at 4x or slower?
Use Roxio Toast or apple's Disc Utilities to lower the burn speed. If your DVD or iMovie has B&W issues where it's not supposed to, then you have a shaky connection / loose cable somewhere. Check all connections (make sure all is snug).

  • PRE9 ? What is max Quality to Burn DVD from 1080i Source????

Dont know if I worded the question properly.
I just bought a Sony HDR-CX350v.  It is state of the art HD.  I am wondering...?  When I look at the quality of my recordings, its awesome.  I import to PSE9 and burn to DVD and the quality is significantly less than straight to the camera.  So it is recording via AVCHD...and then to PSE9 and then is it being compressed again to play on DVD?  I checked all the settings and it doesnt seem to allow to burn at the same quality as I import from camera.  Im sorry if this sounds extremely confusing or like I dont know all the variables...I dont.  Hopefully I have articulated my situation enough and someone can figure out for me what I am asking.  Thanks.

    RFMclaughlin3 wrote:
I presume that if I connect the camera to my TV via HDMI (dont have right cable yet) that it will display in full HD.
    Correct.
    RFMclaughlin3 wrote:
That being the casse, it would seem to me that there must be a way to import files into PRE9, edit, add titles etc and then save to a file without compromising quality of the original HD file?  My TV is networked, I must be able to play a file straight to my TV from my PC....?  Am I dreaming?
PRE will always rerender a file when creating an output, but you must choose one of the HiDef output formats. Saving to DVD will always (by definition) be StandardDef.
    RFMclaughlin3 wrote:
Also, I have tried using PRE9's presets to save the movie for uploading using Flash and MPEG and again the quality is very blurry/marginal.  I see great quality videos online, seriously clear productions.  How are these done?  How can I do the same?
Take a look at John Cloudman recommendations towards the bottom of How can I get the best quality on YouTube? and see if that improves your quality.

  • Missing some sound in burned DVD

When I play my burned DVD the music sound track is there but when the music is ducked for the vocals, the vocals are not there.

I have been trying to make a dvd with a sound track. I checked the sound and saved as mp3 format placed sound in sound box, tested it with slide sow. All is well, then I burn it, and when I play the burned disk I find there is audio drop out each time i remaster it. Is the conversion from mp3 to mp4 during the burning process failing causing the drop out?

  • Burning dvd with premiere elements 11

I burn video files on to dvds.  I always key NTSC widescreen.  Sometimes, the image fills the tv screen.  Most of the time however, there is a 2" wide black border around the image, between the image and the edge of the tv screen.  How do I get the image to fill the tv screen?

Thank you for responding to my problem.  I'm afraid the reading didn't help.  All of my 20 files were created with the same camera, the same project settings, the same equipment, etc.  But when I burned each of them to their own dvd disc, a few of the programs filled the frame on the tv down the hall.  Most however, have a 2" black border around the image.  It makes no sense to me.

  • Purchased Premiere 13. Won't burn dvd of slideshow created in elements 12.

I created a slideshow in Elements 12. Saved as WMV. Tried to burn DVD. Get message inviting me to try Premiere 13 trial. Have already purchased Premiere 13, but Elements 12 doesn't recognize that.
Tried opening Premier 13, importing my WMV from file. Go to create DVD. After seeming to go through the entire burn, I get a message that says something is stopping the complete burn. Provides a link that takes me to a page not available. Is there a way to get my Elements 12 to link to Premiere 13? What else can I try?

    susanK
If you have outputted your Elements Organizer 12 slideshow to obtain a wmv file saved to your computer hard drive, you should be
able to import that into Premiere Elements 13 Editor with the Editor's Add Media/Files and Folders and edit and export accordingly.
There is no integration between the Elements Organizer 12 Slideshow Editor and Premiere Elements 13/Elements Organizer 13.
However, you can convert the 12 catalog in 13. But 13 will require you to convert the slideshow in that catalog to its new format which
is significantly different from what you have used in 12.
Have you updated 13 to 13.1 yet. If you have, sounds like the program is using a new 13.1 feature which leaves you with .iso image file
if you hit burn to failure. You can take that .iso image file to DVD-VIDEO on DVD using a free program named ImgBurn.
You can also use Publish+Share/Disc/DVD  burn to Folder (4.7 GB) to obtain a saved folder containing the VIDEO_TS Folder that you can
get to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc using the ImgBurn program.

  • Can't Burn DVD - keep getting "Error during rendering/encoding"...Help!

I have a new IMac computer with Leopard and I'm having problems burning DVDs. I created a project using IDVD and have audio and pictures (imported individually from Iphoto) that I created into slideshows. I'm try to burn my final copy and continue to receive the "Error during rendering/encoding" message. I looked at earlier threads and saw some people had success when saving it first to a disk image however when I attempted to do that I received the same error. I know I have plenty of memory space since this project is very small. Please let me know if you have any ideas!!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I have a new mac with Leopard since a week, and I had the same problem ("error during rendering / encoding..."). This happened when burning to a disk image.
    I tried a lot of things :
    * very small project
    * create a new user
    * put pictures in a folder, and not drag them from iphoto
    * change the theme
I still had the same problem.
The last thing I tried was to put all the files used by idvd on the hard disk (instead of of an external firewire disk).
It worked ! (with the small size project).
I'm trying to burn the large project again...
I will tell you if it succeeds...
    Best regards,
    Nicolas

  • PE3 crashes when I click "burn dvd". Any help, please?

Hello. My PE3 works just fine, except for one problem, that has plagued me for some time. When I finish editing, then complete the menu (title) page, I click "burn dvd". Invariably, PE closes. When I re-open the project and redo the menu- the forced closure didn't save the menu- it works fine, every time. I tried saving the project and re-opening before burning, but it doesn't seem to help. I'm running XP, Service Pack 3, with 2.80 GHz and 1 Gig of ram. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Audio missing on burned DVD

Follow me on this one: Made an iMovie and shared it with iDVD. Did all the menu items, etc. and burned the DVD. After watching the DVD, I wanted to make some edits. I went into iMovie and did the edits.
I did not create a new iDVD with the edited iMovie because I happened to discover that when I made the edits in iMovie, they actually translated to the original iDVD. So I saved the project in both iMovie and iDVD and burned the new DVD.
PROBLEM: Everything came out perfect except, the audio. I have audio on the menu (which I put there) but there is no audio throughout the rest of the DVD.
I checked my iMovie and audio is there. I reviewed the iDVD project on my computer and the audio is there. I checked the audio levels on iMovie and they're at 100%. I made sure that the "check boxes" on the 3 lines of audio were checked and operable. I checked the "map" on iDVD and there is no indication of any audio issues. Yet, when I play the newly burned DVD, there is no audio other than the menu music.
    Help!!!

Before you burn an updated project, it is a good idea to "Delete Encoded Assets" from the Advanced menu. That will start you afresh with new encoding for the updated project.
If you have incorrectly placed chapter markers in your movie, sometimes that can cause audio problems on a DVD. Make sure that you remove or reset any chapter marker within 1 second of the beginning or end of your movie, or in a transition. This would include the "beginning" marker that is automatically set.
You also could try dragging your iMovie project into a new iDVD project, and burning from there.
Instead of burning directly from iDVD, save the iDVD project as a disk image (an option from the File menu), wait until the assets have encoded (it takes a while), and then play the disk image by double clicking on it, and then clicking on your DVD player app icon on your Mac. If it plays fine, then your encoding is O.K. The next step would be to try burning a DVD from the Disk Image by using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. Open the Disk Utility window and you should see your Disk Image icon displayed in the left hand pane. If it's not there, drag it into that pane. Select it and click on the burn symbol at the top of the window. Insert a DVD-R disk and then click on the "burn" button.

  • Converting and burning DVD from NTSC to PAL

I have created a DVD using iMovie (6.0.2) and iDVD (6.0.2) using NTSC format. I want to share a copy of the DVD with relatives oversees and I have been trying to create/convert a DVD formatted for PAL. I have not had any success!! These are the steps I have used:
    1. Under PREFERENCES, I selected 25 fps
    2. A message window came up indicating the original iMoive file was converted from 29.97 fps (NTSC) to 25 fps (PAL)
    3. I Selected Save As and saved the converted iMovie file at 25 fps as a different file
    3. I Opened the Saved iMovie file under iMoive checking that the PREFERENCES was set at 25 fps
    4. Export from iMovie (full quality) the movie (I have selected 25 fps under PREFERENCES prior to exporting
    5. Import the movie file I just exported and then set the chapter markers and save the new movie in iMovie
    6. SHARE the new movie and select iDVD
    7. When iDVD opens, I check the PREFERENCEES and it has PAL set in the preferences and also has PAL selected under Poject Info
    8. I set up all the themes, fonts, etc. to customize my DVD
    9. I then select BURN DVD and I get the following message: "TV Standard Conflict? It seems that we are burning a NTSC movie on a PAL disc. Proceed with burning?
ANY Suggestions or Advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello Morris,
you do not actually have to convert your iMovie NTSC project to PAL before burning in iDVD. just go to iDVD preferences and select PAL as new standard, then create a new project and import your NTSC iMovie. iDVD will do the standard conversion AND encoding.
the NTSC/PAL conversion done in iDVD, however, doesn't produce the best results - give it a try though, but if you're not satisfied with the DVD's quality, consider getting JES Deinterlacer to do the standard conversion. this software can handle directly the reference movie stored in your project and will output the converted movie to the same location, so when you open your iDVD project, it will be in your media pane
JES Deinterlacer is freeware and you can find it here:

    hope this helps

  • Burn DVD content to CD in Encore

    Hi,
I have Master Collection CS3 and am trying to get an Encore project to auto play on a CD (this short movie is going to be distributed to customers & I want to make sure everyone can view it - not just those who have a dvd drive on their computers).
I found documentation that Encore 2.0 allowed burning DVD-compliant projects to CDs but I can't find the capability in Encore CS3. Is there a plug-in or some other way to burn to CD?
I tried saving as .swf, converting to .exe & burning to CD which works really well for autoplaying on PCs but it obviously won't work on Macs.
Any tips or advice would be very much appreciated.

Sorry, but no version of Encore has ever supported burning a project to CD.

  • Burn DVD from IPhoto slideshow

I read an earlier discussion on this topic but it made the process of burning a DVD from an IPhoto slideshow (with ITunes music track) almost impossible. I did try bringing the show into IDVD but the "formatting" of the "shows" you can choose from aren't appealing. Is there an easy way to do this?

I found it easier to create and burn DVD slide shows from within iDVD, but before creating the slide show, I read the instructions provided by the iDVD "Help" menu. I don't remember the exact steps, but I remember dragging a folder with the pictures into the iDVD window first. I duplicated the folder and saved to the Desktop first, since I had to use Elements to enhance the photos before creating the slide show. By duplicating or creating a copy of the folder with the photos, I did not change iPhoto's folder structure.
You will find the instructions on iDVD's help, under "Getting Started," page 29. Preview will launch to show you all you need to know. However, since I could not copy and paste the text on Preview, I printed just page (29) with the instructions.
