Saving documents on pages in newest version of OS X

In the most recent update of OS X Mountain Lion my Pages options for saving documents doesn't work the same as the previous version. When I click save I get a dialogue box that comes up everytime with the icloud as the first option.  The Where pop up menu provides few options: dropbox, my harddrive and 2 recently opened files.  How do I get to any folder I want to save my document in?  The only way I have been able to figure out how to do it is by duplicating the document and then saving the duplicate.  Otherwise I have been saving it onto my harddrive and then moving it to the file I want.

Unfortunately, Apple has not made a user option to set a default but there are ways around it.
First, you can click on the drop-down menu that says iCloud & navigate to the folder you want. I was using ⌘ D to go to the Desktop & navigate from there.
Second, you can copy & paste this command in Terminal which will change the default to your Documents folder.
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool false
Third, is what I do. I use Default Folder X to give some control over open & save dialog boxes. I've used it since I moved to OS X full-time, back with Jaguar, OS X 10.2. Since you're running Mountain Lion, you want to download the beta of Default Folder X 4.5. It's actually very stable.

  • When I open a saved document in pages, then close it right away without making any changes, why does it ask if I would like to save the page or all new info will be lost?

I have a few saved documents and when I open them to view them quick, sometimes when I close it, I will get asked if I would like to save the document or all my new info will be lost. I didnt change anything so Im not sure why it asks me that. When I open the document again, all the info is there and nothing is different. Thanks

Unless they were Word documents, Pages has done nothing really, but it is updating date information in the file.
It is annoying but just ignore it and don't save.

  • Upgraded iWorks to latest versions but the saved documents only open in old version.

Upgraded to Maverick and then invited to upgrade iWorks 09. Did that but the new and saved documents do not open in new version.
I had to go to finder and Open With the new version. Although the new version is a default.

    3. Click the disclosure triangle next to "Open with:".
    4. Choose the desired application from the "Open with" pop-up menu. You may choose Other to select an application not on the list.

  • Documents open "small" in newest version of Pages 5.5.2

I just noticed this in the most recent version of Pages and it's making working with old documents...tedious.
Instead of opening in the view size that I had closed them as, all existing Pages documents open in the same window dimensions, so I have to readjust the window dimensions of each document. This didn't happen previously.
How can I get all documents (existing docs) to open, say, in a specific windows dimension, magnification, and ideally, the same (or nicely overlapping) place on my monitor screen?

  • (not) saving documents in pages

Historically when I would exit a document I was working on I would get an option to save it with the new revisions or not. When I declined to save the document the old version would remain. Since the Mountain Lion upgrade when I exit a document it simply closes and saves all my revisions w/o giving me this choice. Do you know of anyway to revert back to the old method or a workaround?  I have a variety of documents that I don't use enough to make templates for, but still need to change periodically for one time uses.  Thank you.

It is easy to create sub-folders for your user-created templates in Pages. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in Numbers. First, you need to access the templates folder in your user library. Pages stores those you created & saved as templates in (your account) > Library > Application Support > iWork > Pages > Templates > My Templates. The user's Library is hidden in Lion & Mountain Lion but it is easy to open. In Finder, hold down the Option key while clicking on the Go menu & your user Library will appear about halfway down the list.
Or you can choose Go to Folder from the Go menu in Finder & paste this line in the box:
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWork/Pages/Templates/My Templates/
Now, create folders in the Templates folder, same level as the My Templates folder. You will now have sub-categories in the My Templates section of the template chooser.

  • Problems saving documents in Pages 5.2.2

At the moment when I attempt to save a new document, the save fails and I get an error message:
I get a similar error if I attempt to export the document as a PDF or to MS Word etc.
This is a relatively recent problem (ie it has appeared sometime in the last few weeks).
I can open, edit and save existing files apparently without problem ... so I have a work around for now ... but any ideas?
I'm running a 2010 21.5" unibody iMac [4GB RAM; 500GB HD] with OSX 10.9.4 and automatic software updates.

It sounds like they are not Pages '09 files, they are files you have saved in Pages 5.2.
You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • HELP!  I saved a document.  Copied the document.  Went to delete some extra characters.  Accidentally deleted the entire document.  Now I can't find my document.  When I open the saved document, the page is blank.  Does Pages save copied text anywhere?

I saved a document.  Copied the document.  Went to delete some extra characters and accidentally deleted the text of the entire document.  I did not save a blank page.  I cannot recover the lost text.  Please Help.  I'm NEW to Pages.

    Hi Jan,
Copied text (or other copied material) is on the Clipboard, but only until you copy something else or log out of your account. If you act before doing another copy, you can paste the copied material back into the document. If you don't act right away, you may still have a path back.
One of the most useful keystroke combinations on the Mac is the "Oops! key," as a friend of mine once named it. That's command-Z, also known as "Undo". In some applications it will let you undo only a single step, but in others, including Pages, you can do repeated undos, so it's not quite so essential that you act immediately on making an error. Undo, done via the Oops! key, or via the Edit menu takes you back one change at a time. You can't skip any steps, so to get back to the state before the accidental deletion, you'll have to undo any work you've done since then. The memory of what to Undo disappears when you close the document or quit the application.
At that point you're at the mercy of your backup plan. If you've had Time Machine running, you'll be able to enter Time Machine and go back to an earlier, saved version of the file.
All these are in addition to the steps Ian suggested above.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: Best piece of advice I can give a new Pages user (beyond Backup early and often) is to download and read through the first few chapters of the Pages '09 User Guide, available through the Help menu in Pages '09. Mostly pretty easy reading, and will get you through the basics without much trouble.

  • Saving documents from Pages for Mac

I bought Pages for my Mac. I want to save my documents to iCloud. I do not have an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. So no iOS app. I have Lion. I read this:
Use your computer’s browser to visit the iCloud website at icloud.com/iwork, and then sign in using your Apple ID.
Click iWork, and then click Pages.
Click the Action menu (looks like a gear) at the top-right of the browser window, and then choose Upload Document from the menu.
Locate and select the document you want to copy to iCloud, and then click Choose.A copy of the document is saved to iCloud. If you edit the original document on your Mac, the edits aren’t reflected in the copy that’s stored in iCloud until you save the edited version to iCloud again.
There's only one problem with that: step 3. When I select iWork, then click Pages, I just get a page that says "learn more" and "get pages". There is no Action menu. Only the cloud for the home page. No little gear. So. . . .why not? And how do I do this then?

To be able to access the iWork pages at iCloud.com, you need the iWork apps for iOS installed on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Or you need to be using the latest versions of iWork for Mac on OS X 10.8.2
So, you'll need to update to Mountain Lion.

  • Open Office saving documents to Pages

Open Office saving my documents (saved as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP) in the program Pages. Meaning, documents with .doc are being saved to Pages instead of Open Office, so when I go to open the document, it opens in Pages instead of Open Office.

The problem isn't that they are being saved to Pages. The problem is that Pages is set as the default program to open them. You can change that by doing the following:
    1. In Finder, find and select (highlight) a .doc file.
    2. Click the "Action" button in the bar at the top of the Finder window and then click "Get Info"
    3. The Info window has a section titled "Open with" -- change it to Open Office and then click Change all.

  • Saving documents in Pages

I have Pages 09, version 4.2 running on OS X 10.7.5.  Once I open a new document I cannot close or save it.  the only function that works is the minimize button.  How can I fix this.  I am reasonably computer illiterate so simple is good  Thnx!

    Mike,
Do whatever it takes to Quit Pages. You can Force Quit Pages if necessary.
Restart your computer and run Software Update and see if that fixes the problem. If you get into the same situation again because the problem document reopens, quit Pages again and then start Pages again, but hold down the shift key as you do it. Holding down the shift key will prevent the previously active document from reopening automatically.
It may be necessary to abandon that document if it turns out that the problems are related to that particular file.

  • Opening a previously saved document in Pages

I have Maverick and Pages 4.3.  When I press Command O in other applications, a window appears with a drop down menu at the top that allows you to choose between the desktop and the hard drive. But the window that appears in Pages does not have that drop down menu. Only the contents of the desktop are in the window. Is there any way to access the hard drive contents, which is where all my files are?

Yes it can, just make sure hard disks are checked in Finder Prefereces.
And you really should store your files in your Documents folder or in Users > Shared.

  • My newest version of Pages won't open previous saved documents. It keeps saying this version not supported please update, but it already is. Please help.

My previously saved documents in Pages will not open. When I click on one of the documents it is saying, "you need a newer version of Pages to open this document. You can download the latest version of Pages from the Apps Store, but when I click on the apps store, it states that is installed and running the current version. Help, I can't open any of my saved documents.

The problem is that you have both versions of pages on your computer - pages 09 is in the dock with the old ink pot icon - pages version 5 (orange pen and paper icon) is in your applications folder.  Delete your pages 09 icon from your dock by dragging it upwards in a puff of smoke - and drag the pages 05 icon from the applications folder to your dock and use that in future.  This fixed it for me.
I presume I can uninstall pages 09 now.  You need to do the same with numbers and keynote.

You can add the icon of the missing Pages on your Dock or open Pages from the Apple menu > Recent Items list.
Or you can archive Pages 5 so that it doesn't automatically open.
If you are unhappy about this review/rate Pages 5 in the App Store.
