Saving edited shot back to iPhoto

Hi everyone,
First time poster here, so hoping someone can help!
I just made the move to Photoshop, and for a whole load of reasons I want to continue to use iPhoto to organise my photos. At least until I get more proficient in PS. Importing shots into PS from iPhoto is totally fine, no problems there. But I'd ideally like to have the edited photo save back into the same iPhoto event the original photo's in.
Does anyone have a good workflow for this? Or a way of tweaking preferences in PS so that it happens automatically?
Cheers!
Simon

I just recently started trying to use my Photoshop CS3, after acquiring it 3 years ago, and never quite getting around to tackling it, since I was still using good old PS v.7.0. I finally made the leap. What a shock! The CreativeSuites version is entirely different from the old versions, and, so far, impossible for me to figure out. Most of the functions I was used to are drastically reconfigured from standard PS's. (I'm going to have to get a Users' Manual or take another class.)
One thing I DID figure out is the function you are questioning. Export a downloaded iPhoto shot - from your iPhoto - to the desktop; Open Photoshop and open the iPhoto shot (will be in the Preview mode) in Photoshop, save as a Photoshop tiff,  and do whatever editing, retouching, etc. in Photoshop. Save, and then from iPhoto, import - fom desktop - back into iPhoto Library.
If anyone know where i can get a comprehensive (beginners") manual on how to use the CreativeSuite version of Photoshop, please communicate! (After 3 years, I can't locate any manual that may have come with the software and there is no PDF version that I can find on line. I am completely mystified.)

  • Saving edited images back to iPhoto

I'm having problems saving images in PSE back to iPhoto.
I have set up the preferences in iPhoto (11-for Mac) to use PSE 10 as the editting software.  I have also followed Barbara B's guidance on setting the file saving options in PSE10 to 'One first Save' - 'Save over current file'. - but once I have editted an image and I wish to save it (back to iPhoto) I am instead given the usual choices associated with a 'save as...' option.  To minimise effort, I then save the changed image to the Desktop and then drag it back to iPhoto.
I know this have been covered before I have read the solutions, but it seems that the changed image it not automatically being imported back to iPhoto.
Perhaps I have not set up the Preferences correctly - any suggestions?

If you start the process in iPhoto by hitting the edit button near bottom right, then any changes made in the external editor should update automatically after you save in Elements (Cmd+S) and close (Cmd+W)
The process is not always smooth with raw files but should work with jpegs.
Note, you cant use the editing tool in iPhoto once you set up Elements editor as the external editing app.

  • Saving edited RAW files in iphoto

Hi I have searched the forum but cant find an answer that works for me and I have also read this
    http://http://barbarabrundage.com/2010/11/29/using-photoshop-elements-9-with-iphoto/
Basically I am opening my Raw images in PSE 10 as my external editor from Iphoto 11. My question is what is the best way to save it back to iphoto?
I have tried the instructions in the above link and set PSE 10 to 'save over current file' in the savings preferences but when I clicked save image after editing in camera raw it opened the save as menu
Should I click on open image from camera raw to open in the editor and then save it from there for it to update in iphoto? I clicked open image for an edit yesterday then saved to desktop as a psd file and imported to  iphoto which worked
Apologies I am very new to this, any help would be great
    Chris

Ok thanks, is there any way to keep the format of the file then and save into iphoto as per the linked article? Would I have to keep it as a NEF file??
Also when I've edited a Raw photo if I am going to save it to desktop and import it back to iphoto what file type should I be saving it as? I used  PSD last time is this right?
One final question when should I be saving files as DNG as this is what the book I am reading refers to but i dont know if these can be saved to iphoto or what their purpose is
    Thanks again

  • Saving edited image back to photoshop from lightroom

In Lightroom 4 and Photoshop cs5 I could export to Photoshop from lightroom...edit....then save and the edited photo would go back to Lightroom complete with edits. Now in LR5 and CC the edited image does not go back to LR I have tried syncing no avail...any idea?

  • Importing edited version back into iPhoto

I have certain photos that I keep in iPhoto. I was in Aperture and dragged a couple photos over for editing purposes. Now, when I want to bring the new version back into iPhoto it is not showing up in the Aperture library browser within iPhoto. I have Aperture 3.0.1 and iPhoto 09.
    Thanks!

  • Having trouble saving edited images back to organizer.

After I save images in Editor, they don't always "save".
I get "IAC error failed message", and sometimes image doesn't save at all after numerous editing steps.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Saving photos edited in PS Elements back  into iPhoto

I'm new to PS Elements and love it but am having trouble saving photos. I have set my preferences in iPhoto to open in PS elements for editing. So far that's great. My question is when I'm finished editing in PS Elements how do I save the edited photo back into iPhoto?? I'm sure there's an easy solution but beyond saving into PhotoLibrary in Finder then trying to find in within the many many folders and dragging into iPhoto - I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

    Jodeth,
That's great. Yup, it's those little things!
You can always do a "save as" and save to the desktop. This will not change the image within iPhoto which is sometimes a way to go if you don't want the image changed within iPhoto but want to use the edited image for something else.

  • How can I simplify or Automate saving Photoshop edits back to iPhoto

I am using Photoshop CS3 as my external editor for iPhoto. I am looking for a way to Automate saving the edited pictures back to iPhoto. Currently I use Command W, Click Save, in "Save As" window I change the format from Photoshop to JPEG, click Save, then click Replace, then click OK for my JPEG options window and my edited file is saved back into iPhoto. I know there must be an easier way to do this. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Have you set PS as an external editor?
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
What format are the original files?
    Regards

  • How do I save a photo exported from iPhoto and edited in Photoshop Elements 6 back to iPhoto?

My photos are downloaded to my iMac iPhoto 09.  I am able to export directly to Photoshop Elements '06 to edit but when I try to export the edited photo back to iPhoto it goes to Pictures, not to iPhoto where I want it to go.  Any suggestions?

Did you really export it or did you set PSE as your external editor? If you used file>export in iphoto, then you must import the edited photo back to iphoto as a new file.
To avoid that you can set PSE as your external editor in the iphoto preferences, and iphoto will remember your last saved edits + original, but you must not change the name or format of the image when saving. If you see the save as window it won't work. You may need to go to the PSE preferences>saving files and set On First Save to save over existing to avoid seeing the save as window. It will not work with raw files.

  • How do I get an edited photoshop elements 11 picture back into iPhoto

@I have a Mac and my iPhoto pictures are edited in photoshop elements 11.  How do I save the picture so the edited picture goes back into iPhoto
    Barbara

You have two ways to use PSE with iphoto:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor for iphoto and send the photos from iphoto. Make your edits, then Save, not Save As without changing the name or format, and iphoto will remember your last edited version plus the original, but you'll have to lose the edits to see the original again. You will probably need to set the Editor preferences>Saving Files>On First Save to save over original to make this work, and it doesn't work with raw files.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, use File>Open in the Editor, then make any changes you like to the name or format, and import the edited image back to iphoto as a new file.

  • Saving Edited Images to iPhoto '09

I am just beginning to learn to use Photoshop Elements 6 for the Mac. I want to edit my photos in PSE, but organize & store them in iPhoto. After I finish editing a photo in PSE, how to I return the edited photo back to iPhoto?
    Thank you.

I have just started learning photoshop elements 6 for the Mac and I, too am having a terrible time with saving images. I bought the "Missing Manual Photoshop Elements 6 for the MAC" book and so far cannot find the answers.
I have set PSE as my photo editor in iphoto and when I double-click photos are indeed sent to PSE. My problem is I can't seem to save them back into iphoto. (After searching around this forum, I see that you cannot change name or format and then have iphoto create a version.) However, I have saved images without changing name or format and the new version seems to replace the original - the original is gone! When I go into iphoto I only see the originals if I DID change name or format. And then the new copy, in a different format or with new name, is not in iphoto!
I can find these new versions in PSE>Open. They seem to be in iphoto in a folder called "modified". However when I go into iphoto I cannot find this "modified " folder anywhere!!! Can I only open them thru PSE and are they actually stored in PSE or iphoto. Please help- so frustrated!!! Thanks

  • How 2 get edited photo from iphoto app back into iPhoto?

I have the new iPhoto app.
I can't seem to get my edit photos back into iPhoto on my imac.
I thought save to iTunes would do it but it doesn't seem to do anything.
Sure would like to just go back to my mac and find the photo updated.
I have the photo stream turned off and just sync with a cable.
    Problem 2
The photos and albums seem to be in random order.  This makes it almost impossible to find the photo I want to edit.
    Can anybody please help?

<If you are using the cable: Connect your iPad > open iPhoto > select your iPad on the left under devices > Import <button top right of iPhoto (blue button).

    <Do not import through iTunes.
Sorry - that was no help.
If I edit a photo in e iPhoto app then connect and bring up iPhoto on my mac the iPad device has no photos to import.
I have imported hundreds of photos from iPhones and iPads - I know how to import.
Even if there was a photo laying there to import - that is not what I want because...
Imagine if I had 100 photos then edited all 100 photos on my iPad.
Then if I imported them I would now have 200 photos in iPhoto on my mac.
I want the edited photo to update the original just as tho I edited it in iPhoto on my mac.
So I could "Revert to Original" if I needed to but probably never would.
So the question is when you share to iTunes where does it go?
Also the new album it creates "Edited" - What's the story on that?

  • Saving Edited Photos

For Mac users how do I edit in Photo Elements 12 and organize and save my changes to Iphoto?

    You have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor in the iphoto prefs, then send the photos from iphoto. Save, not save as, without changing the name or format and iphoto will remember your original plus the most recently saved edited version, but you will have to lose the edits to revert to the original.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, edit them and make all the changes to name or format that you like, then import the edited version back to iphoto as new photos. This way you can save as many states of your image as you like.

  • Can't see iPhoto pics that are edited in PS and saved back to iPhoto

Photos that are edited in Photoshop and saved back into iPhoto don't show up in the iPhoto window. Only the originals show up. When I do a search, I see that they are saved in a "modified" folder inside iPhoto. How can I see them in the iPhoto window? I would like to "trash" some of them. Can I just drag them to the trash from the "modified" folder or will that foul up the iPhoto database?

    Maybe this will help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • Saving pictures edited in Elements 6 back to iPhoto

I am have started editing pictures in Elements 6 by choosing that as the default editor. When I try to save the picture back to iPhoto it does not show up in the folder it seems to be saved to. Am I having several senior moments here? I go File > SaveAs and choose the event file in iPhoto.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.
