Saving FCP projects externally

I have several finished projects that I'd like to save to an external drive to free up space on my internal  drive. Do I just "move" the projects to an external drive?  And if so, when they are moved, can I bring them back to make further edits if necessary?  Thank you in advance!

Tom, please help - like you have before - sorry for piggy-backing on this thread but I have a similar situation. I installed Mavericks before dealing with the File Management issues  I have fcpx 10.1.3.
How do I move these files to an external HD.  I am out of room on my main drive.  Can I just drag and drop to Ext drive?  What should I label the folder of the ext dr?

Is this problem only occurring with the project you copied from an external drive, or with any FCP project?
For example, if you were to create a new project, do you still have this problem?
In FCP, if you go to the menu FInal Cut Pro > System Settings and look at the Scratch Disks Tab, is it set where you expect it to be? Have you tried switching the scratch disk to a different disk?

  • I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook.  I had just finalized a project, went to work on another one and files couldn't be found, were not deleted how do I find them?

I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook.  The other day I had just finalized a project and went to work on another one and when I opened the project I could see what should have been there, but scrolling over the entire clip I would only see black and that the file was missing.  I did not drag anything on the hard drive to the trash or move anything.  How can I get those files?  These are videos of my kids and I am devastated and willing to try anything!

Control click does not work - no option to find files.  I have no idea what to do.  When I look at the usage of the external drive the space is being used, but I cannot find the files.  I am going to try MacKeeper's Undelete and see if I can make any progress with it.

  • Help! my project is not automatically saving to my external drive!

In the past, Final Cut Pro automatically saved my projects on my external disk. A test project saved as well. Now I'm working on a bigger project and for hours editing and so forth... When I went back to work on it, i could not find it anywhere on the disk! Any suggestions?

I found my project and backed it up while talking to a support rep on the phone. She sent me this link for back-up information:

  • Project will not open when saved to an external hard-drive

    Hi,
Well, as the title says, I cannot reopen a project when saved to an external hard-drive, it will however do so when I save to a local drive... Not good if you wanna work around several workstations, any ideas as to why?
    Thanks,
    Phil.

Are you using Final Cut Pro?
You should be asking on that forum. It would be beneficial if you provided some concrete information, what computer, what drives, how are they formatted, how are they connected, what exactly happens when you try to open it?

  • Multiple FCP projects presets saving in original settings

I have multiple FCP projects running on seperate hard disks. Each disk is 2TB for video content. For example Project X is on 1st disk & Project Y is on 2nd disk.
Issue I'm having is when setting the capture presets, etc for X, they are on disk 1. However when I go to disk 2 to work on Y, the presets are now set to disk 1! I can't have the presets for Y landing in X cause when I store X on a back up drive, the Y project spends forever trying to find all the "off line" info.
I need all the presets for each project to stay with that project and drive. So no matter when I open a project, no matter what drive it's on, all the info stays with that project and not another project. I've had this problem for years and it's a pain in the *** trying to keep my projects seperated since more & more are running at the same time.
I actually have (3) 2TB drives for individual projects and a 500GB Main drive for my applications.
Is there a way to have mutiple FCP projects on seperate drives, without having to constantly keep changing the presets so one project doesn't overlap to the another project.

My experience is that you have to change your presets and where your scrach drive is going. So when working on project X save to drive 1. and on project Y save to drive 2. Then reset your presets when switching projects. I agree this is a pain but it is the only way I have found. Just keep doing what you have been doing. Let me know if you find a solution for this.

  • CF data file missing on FCP project files

Every time I open a saved project file on Final Cut Pro, it says CF data file missing on my FCP project files. Files seem to be in constant frames folder but all black and not highlighting. suggestions?
I was saving things on a MyBook studio external HD. I think earlier as I was working or saving on the external HD it disconnected.
But shouldn't it have all my files still?
I still see all my project files and capture scratches.
    Any help or suggestions please?

    Hi Michael,
When I opened the FCP project. It says " CF data file missing CF+ filename here"
So I looked in my Render Files> Constant Frames folder and the files are in there. I tried to open the movie files and play them. When played, they all play back a black screen/nothing in the file? And some have a blue screen that says" unrendered".
So I try to search for the file to connect it back to the project, but when I go to th folder and try to select it. It isn't highlighted, so I can't select it. So they aren't missing.
So I have to press cancel. It seems like I'm not able to edit or work on the FCP project until I have those files connected.
    Thanks for your reply,
    Ingrid

  • Sharing FCP projects between user accounts problem

    Hello!
I'm working on a project with several other colleagues. Each of us has his own User account on the computer (dual G5 / 10.4.7) because we have different preferecnes regarding keyboard layouts, desktop colour etc. We would like to have our FCP project files accessible to each of us.
I have tried different approaches to solve this task, but haven't fully succeded yet (I tried creating the project file within the /Users/Shared foler; putting it into a dedicated /Users/FCPProjects folder and applying chmod/chown commands; creating a Editors group with NetInfo and assigning those foders to this group; I even tried to work around this using ACLs).
The problem is that when we click "Save All" command in FCP, we get three or four OK-only dialog boxes in a row saying "Access denied". The project file is in fact saved (I can see it by checking the Modified time in Finder), but FCP seems not to be aware of this and doesn't want to quit. It's an unpleasent situation because it allways makes us worry about losing our work.
Could someone please give us instructions on the correct procedures for resolving the issue.
    Thank you
    Best regards
    Mato Ilijic

    matoid,
ACLs should work for you, and it seems that they are. You shouldn't have to deal with the error dialogue either, so let's see if we can't get rid of it.
First, let's talk about groups. I have looked at your "step by step," and I notice that you didn't bother to change the group ownership of the "shared" folder that you created. Fine, ACLs still work, but the group ownership of "wheel" might be the cause of your error messages. ACLs are a more advanced system of access controls than the older POSIX system, but POSIX still exists, and might affect your work.
Let's assume that you have your standard users that will be using FCP placed properly into a common group. For this discussion, I'll call that group "fcpusers." Under the POSIX paradigm, any "shared" folder can be owned by any one of the users in this group, but it must have a group ownership of "fcpusers" in order to work properly for everyone. When it does, every new file or folder created in it will "inherit" that group ownership.
Now, every user on a given machine will have read access to that shared folder. If a non-member of group "fcpusers" attempts to save a file there, however, an error message is likely to appear. One other possibility is that the file is saved, but with an "unknown" group ownership. This is because of a conflict between the groups the saving user is a member of and the attempted "inheritance" from the enclosing folder.
I want you to try the following. Please do this exactly as I outline it:
    1) Create a new group in Netinfo Manager. Duplicate the "admin" group. Change the name of the duplicate to "fcpusers," then delete the "realname," "generateduid," and "smb_sid" properties. Change the GID to "101." Select the "users" property, then choose Directory>Insert Value. Type the short name of one of your users. Repeat this procedure for every user of FCP. Select any admin users in this group who will not be using FCP, and click the "Delete" icon. Finally, choose Domain>Save Changes.
    2) Create a new folder in /Users/Shared. For this discussion we will assume that you will call it "FCP_Data." Further, we will assume that one of your FCP users is named "usera" (your terminology ;-)). Open Terminal. Since you seem to be well-versed in the use of Terminal, I will simply post the commands needed:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown usera:fcpusers /Users/Shared/FCP_Data
    sudo chmod g+w /Users/Shared/FCP_Data</pre>
    3) Before anyone begins saving files in this directory, make sure that their umask is changed using TinkerTool. Also, I recommend that all media gets saved here, too. I'm not sure how close FCP is to iMovie, if it doesn't save all data in a "package," but it is likely that media is being referenced using "placeholders." If this is the case, and media for a given project is scattered all over the file system, there could indeed be ownership issues. If media needs to be on externals, this same "shared" folder can be created there. Just make sure that #1, the volume has "ownership and permissions" in effect, and #2 all media is kept within the "shared" directory structure.
You must use TinkerTool to change the umask such that members of the group have read/write permission. TinkerTool doesn't specifically say this, but the corresponding umask is "002" (the OS X default is "022"). BTW, umask is subtracted from the "full permissions" value of "666" when saving non-executable files ("777" for folders and executables).
Once you have a properly configured "shared" folder and a proper umask in place, your users can begin to populate the shared directory. If any existing projects are to be added, they must be copied by a user into the shared directory, not simply moved. Only when a copy is made will the new copy inherit the proper group ownership. Just to be sure, I will include one more set of commands to use, once the shared directory has been populated:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown -R usera:fcpusers /Users/Shared/FCP_Data
    sudo chmod -R g+w /Users/Shared/FCP_Data</pre>
Please follow these instructions carefully, then report the results. This should work, and without using ACLs.

  • Need help in exporting my FCP project to work on my laptop

I'm taking a long trip and I'd like to export all that's needed to work on my FCP project from my PowerMac G5 to my Powerbook Pro. I could really use some advice on this.
    1. It's most likely that all of my files will not fit on the Powerbook hard drive (half is devoted to Windows). I know there are issues with importing footage to a firewire drive, but what if my footage is already imported? Can I get a tiny firewire external drive and move all my video files to work with? Or will I still be at a risk of dropped frames or other problems? Can I even get a USB drive for this? WD makes a great tiny one. I've got a huge Maxtor firewire drive, but I need one that is portable and doesn't need external power. Any recommendations? Is this just a stupid question and there's no way this is possible?
    2. Will I run into a problem of installing my Final Cut Studio on my Powerbook Pro since it's already installed on my PowerMac? I guess if I absolutely had to, I could uninstall FCP from my Powermac, then install it on my Powerbook, then uninstall it from my powerbook when i'm done with my trip, then reinstall it on my PowerMac. But it'd be much simpler if I could just install it on my Powerbook and leave the already installed version on my PowerMac alone.
I'd love some advice with this. Thanks!

I'm taking a long trip and I'd like to export all
that's needed to work on my FCP project from my
PowerMac G5 to my Powerbook Pro. I could really use
    some advice on this.
First, do you mean Macbook Pro? Also what version of FCP are you running? If you have a Macbook Pro then you must have FCP 5.1 in order for it to run on your notebook.
    1. It's most likely that all of my files will not fit

You are correct in assuming that you need not put your media files on your system drive. Get a small Firewire drive that is bus powered, I recommend on from G-Technologies, maker of the G-Raid.
    2. Will I run into a problem of installing my Final

This depends on what version you are using. I believe that you can have 5.1 installed on both a desktop and notebook with one license. However, be sure to check the license that came with your software just to be sure. If you do not have 5.1 (and you don't have a MBP but instead a Powerbook (not Pro) then you will have to uninstall and reinstall.
Once you have these issues worked out it is a matter of transferring your project files to your new FW drive.

  • FCP Project Import

FCP Project Files do not import at all! My scenario is as follows:
I create a Final Cut Pro Project file (.fcp) and try to upload it into FCSVR by dragging the file into the FCSVR window while logged in as admin.
This throws an error that says, “Unable to analyse project – invalid format.”
Then I export the project as an XML file and upload it the same way and receive no error.
All of the files are uploaded beautifully as well as the .xml file; however, when I check out the .xml file, it is copied to the folder of my choice as a .fcp file! At least that is the extension that shows up. I can tell it is really still an .xml file because when I open it with FCP it converts it to a .fcp file (FCP informs me of this on execution).
After I make changes to the file and save it (using Command+s), I go back to FCSVR and try to check in the file I checked out. The file checks in just fine.
However, when I try to check the file out again, I get a different error message that says, “Final Cut Pro Download failed (Project File not found).”
I have checked the device, which is on my Xsan volume, and the file is there. Actually, so is the .xml file.
The only work around I have found is instead of just saving my changes with Command+s, I can export another .xml with the same name as the original and upload that file into FCSVR, but that will overwrite the file already there, making version tracking unavailable.
I have seen this problem in a few places and I wonder if it is around the board, or if it is just on some installs. Any ideas or fixes would be awesome.

Thanks for your reply. I apologize because I already received an answer and it worked! Here is Matt Geller's response from my post on Xsanity:
First - checking in the xml is confusing the process. Version 1.1 of FC Server expects to receive an actual .fcp binary during upload. It does the same when checking out: it delivers an .fcp binary.
I have a hunch that you are getting the invalid format error because your Final Cut Server itself is not logged in as the admin user. If this is the case, keep the machine logged in and see if you still have the issue with the original .fcp binary.
Sure enough, once I logged in as admin, it worked beautifully.

  • FCP Project import creates duplicates of existing assets

I posed another question similar to this in Sept but had to go into the field for a couple month.
I have set up my Media device as an edit in place device (device type is Filesystem). Mac URI file://localhost/Volumes/MyDisk/PRODUCTION MEDIA/Media/
I put directories and subdirectories in this device and scanned it to add the files into FCS as assets.
I now upload a FCP Project file from another computer (FCSTST.fcp).
I set my target device as the edit-in-place device.
This project file references two files that exist on the same disk as the original .fcp file.
These files also exist in the edit in place device.
When the Project file uploads, it adds files to the edit-in-place device and adds a new asset to the catalogue for each of the files.
My understanding is that FCS should recognize that these files exist as assets within the FCS catalogue and link to those files, not add the files to the edit-in-place device and a new asset to the catalogue that is a duplicate of the original asset.
Most other people seem to have problems getting linked files into the system. I'm having problems with too many.

also found this from the manual. Not an exact answer but hints at this:
    • Final Cut Pro project files include the file paths to the project’s media. Final Cut Server locates the project’s media using the file paths stored in the Final Cut Pro project file. An issue can occur if the Final Cut Pro project and its media have been moved from their original location to a device that has a scan or copy response configured to automatically upload new files to the Final Cut Server catalog. In this case, the file paths stored in the Final Cut Pro project no longer match where the media actually is located. You can correct this by opening the project in Final Cut Pro after it has been moved, reconnecting the media files (this may not be necessary; in some cases Final Cut Pro may be able to resolve the file paths on its own), and saving the project before using an automation to add the files to the Final Cut Server catalog.

  • FCP project file crashes before even opening

I am working for a client and using there system which is a G4 iMac running OS 10.4.11 and I am editing using FCP Studio 2, FCP 6.0.4
The quick is I am trying to open a project which recently has been taking forever to load and just recently crashes Final Cut Pro once it opens, which prevents me to work on it further, I was able to open it once long enough to copy the files into a new FCP project but after I saved and restarted FCP from the new Project folder I got the same result. I have tried going back into my auto save vault and open old files but I get the same result. I am able to open other FCP projects so I don't think it is a problem with FCP but more so with this particular file. ok so maybe that was the long version, please can any one offer any solutions or is all lost?
    thanks

It slow t load while “Reading Project” this is a photo based project actually its all photos. a time laps of over a month or more taking pictures everyday at approx 1 pic every hour or 30 mins. so I have alot of photos in the FCP project file. this i can understand for the slow loading time. but what is causing the FCP project to crash so often? i did try emptying the preference files but still no luck.

  • Backup MDC makes my fcp projects corrupt

When my MDC went down (someone turnet it OFF!!!), the backup mdc was in control. Everything played along nicely, except for one major problem. All fcp projects saved to the san were corrupt. They looked ok, had the correct filetype and size was ok, but I got "Cannot open project file" when I tried to open the saved files. Getting the MDC up and running AND doing a restart on the macs, solved the problem. Any idea why this happened ??
Xsan 1.4 and 10.4.7 on the servers.

I've seen similar behaviour from different G5s, when in charge of the SAN. Without wanting to anthropomorphize them, I think each one has its own personality. Isn't that helpful? How about your logs? Did anything show up on the backup MDC when it was in control?
