Saving file as "Save as"......in my external hard drive!

It seems I am either a novice or there is something wrong with my computer or external hard drive. I am trying to save a pages file that I created on pages on macbook pro 13' to my external portable hard drive and i can't, it says that the file canot be saved, then i used another computer and it did work just perfect. Then I tried the same thing but this time with a flash drive "pen drive" and it work just perfect. Is it because it is not compatible with it? or I am doing something wrong, can someone please show me hot to save files on pages to an external hard drive.
Thanks in advance.....

Make sure you have a backup of everything you want to keep on your External HD!
You will see a list of volumes on the left side of *Disk Utility.*
Select the external harddrive. The upper name is the actual Hard Drive, under it is the name of any partition/s on that HD. Choose the upper name.
Choose the Erase button at the top of the right hand side of the window.
+Volume Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) > give it a sensible name > Erase…+
If you want to install OSX on it and make it bootable, go to the Partition button:
+Volume Scheme > 1 Partition > Options… > check GUID Partition Table > OK > Apply+
NB This will format it to work on the Mac, but PCs will be unable to read it. If you want to move between Macs and PCs you will need to format it as FAT32 and possibly multiple partition it as FAT32 has limits on volume size.

  • I need to get a file out of my documents to a colleague but can't email or save it to an external hard drive....what do I do??

I saved a document on my MacBook Air and need to save it to an external hard drive. I've also tried emailing the document, but it was not successful. I need to get this document to a colleague ASAP but cannot get it out of my documents. Please help!!

I tried dragging and dropping but it won't do it (or to a USB thumb drive). I was finally able to email it, but I still need to get it to my external hard drive. Think I will be taking it to an apple store. Thanks for the help!

Format the external drive for your PC. Connect it to her computer after that but do not format it. It will appear on her desktop if you have selected that in preferences. Use Finder and drag the files you want to copy from her computer to the icon for the external drive.

  • File transfer from MacBook Pro into external hard drive

I can't copy files from the MacBook into an external hard drive.
In the 'Get Info' section, it says read-only. However, the hard drive have just been recently bought.
I had the same problem with our previous hard drive. Although the previous hard drive was 'read-only' I was able to copy and paste files in our old HP laptop.
What can I do in order to copy and paste files from the MacBook into the hard drive?
    Hard drive = Toshiba
    Capacity = 1TB

In my last paragraph, I said
"Note that Windows PCs cannot write natively to an HFS drive, so if you need to exchange files between Mac and PC, we need to talk about different options."
Windows cannot read Mac Extended (HFS) formatted drives; the Mac cannot write to Windows (NTFS) formatted drives.
The only formats fully compatible between Mac and PC are FAT32 (largely deprecated) and exFAT. If you need full read-write compatibility between Windows and Mac, and you can erase the drive (ie, it's a new drive or you have confirmed backups), reformat to exFAT using Disk Utility.
If you have a drive with files on it and you cannot erase them at the moment:
    - if the drive is formatted for the Mac, you can purchase MacDrive for the PC
    - if the drive is formatted for Windows (NTFS), you can purchase Paragon NTFS for the Mac.

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

  • Downloading files from PC to Mac via external hard drive

I have already downloaded the files from my PC to an external hard drive. I have connected that external hard drive to my iMac and am attempting to bring those files onto my iMac, but don't know how. Can anyone help? I have it connected, but it seems to be showing up at my Time Machine Backup and I can locate any of the files from my PC.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
here are several ways to migrate your PC files http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518
but it seems to be showing up at my Time Machine Backup and I can locate any of the files from my PC
I am not sure if I understand that one correctly.
Does your external harddisk comes up as a Time Machine backup in OSX ?
Or is Time Machine asking if you want to use that external harddisk for backup ?
    Regards

More information would help. How is the external connected? Does the external appear on your Desktop? Has the external been formatted for a Mac? What method do you use to transfer files? When you try to move a file to the external, what does happen?

i just saved my iphoto original library to my external hard drive, now how do i create new space on my hard drive and create a new iphoto library

Trash the copy of the library you just moved. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
But do you want to have two iPhoto Libraries? Why not just use the one on the External?

  • I cannot get files from my desktop to my external hard drive

Does anyone have any information on why my external hard drive would not be allowing me to move files from my computer to my external hard drive?  I have a Seagate Free Agent external hard drive.  It has 1TB of space that is no where near being used.  It will show up on the desktop when I plug it in, but i cannot move anything to it.  Also, I have a few movies on the external hard drive that I cannot view for some reason.  Does anyone have any input on why that could be?  It gives me the pop up window that says "a required codec isn't available."  Any onformation will be very helpful.  Thank you in advance for your help.

  • How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?

How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?  Each time I try, the video will not play from the external hard drive.

Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original.  That should get the original video file exported.  Try to export one to the Desktop first and open it with Quicktime Player.  If all goes well export the rest to a folder on the EHD. How is the EHD formatted?  It should be OS X Extended (journaled).

  • How do i save files from my macbook to an external hard drive

Ive always been a PC user until recently when i purchased a macbook pro. I have an external hard drive that i used to back up all my files including word documents & mp3's etc. I now want to use the same hard drive to back up files from my macbook but i dont want to make a copy of the entire drive (like with time line) i just want to save individual files. When i go to do this, a light grey circle appears with a 'cross out' and i am unnable to copy/save the file. In the past (with PC) all i have had to do is drop and drag to perform this function. I have attempted to make an alias, copy and paste etc to overcome the problem but nothing thus far has worked.

Your external drive is formatted NTFS which OS X can read from but not write to. You can either install third-party software on the Mac to enable writing to the drive or repartition and reformat the drive for exclusive use with the Mac. If you don't need to move files between a Mac and a PC, then I would recommend the latter solution.
    Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.2
NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5.3
    To repartition:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • I recently had my Seagate External Hard Drive go bad.  I am trying to re-import my iMovie files from disk to save to the new external hard drive i was sent.  no luck

I need to back up my iMovie DVDs.  I recently had my Seagate External Hard Drive go bad.  Seagate replaced the drive but not all the iMovie projects i had backed up there.  Is there a way to do this from theDVDs i burned the iMovie projects to?  The DVDs are now the only copy i have of all my home movies

even when the hard drive is compatable with my MacBook Air.
What is the file system on that drive? Is it formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
And what is your iPhoto version? iPhoto 9.5.1?
Some how I have trouble trying to drag my photos to my drive and it is not letting me to do so
What exactly happens when you try to drag photos to your drive? Are you dragging from iPhoto's window to the drive?
Can you export your photos, when you select the photos on iPhoto and use the command "File > Export"?

  • How do I download files from websites directly into my external hard drive without them saving into my internal hard drive?

I am a DJ and I download a lot of music from websites. My internal hard drive's space is almost full which in turn makes my macbook really slow. I bought an external hard drive to download everything onto it instead but it still downloads onto my internal hard drive. Please help me

Assuming you're using Safari, the default download folder is specified in Safari>Preferences>General. Go there and you'll see where Downloads is currently selected. Click on that, select Other, navigate to the directory you want to use and click Select.

  • Wrt600n Deleting files or corrupting partion info on external hard drive

I have experienced this ordeal two different occasions and 2 different external hard drives. While in the web based utility setting up ftp access and networks shares and such the router has deleted or corrupted the partition table. My 1Tb WD external was nearly 75% full and after clicking save settings the files were gone. So I borrowed my buddies external to try to duplicate and I did however I'm not sure what exactly caused it to erase the drives. All i know is i plugged each drive in reset the router set up network shares the set up and turned on the ftp server and set ftp acces to couple accounts and wham info was lost.

It might be a firmware issue. Try reflashing its firmware. You can get it from www.linksys.com/download
