Saving filenames in iPhoto strangeness

Ok, so i am new to Mac and have been using IPhoto for a few months. I am renaming my photos in a IPhoto so that I can search easily for them. However I have just realised that in FInder the file names are not changing. Well actually its not that simple...some of them have changed and reflect my amendments in IPhoto and some of them just have the original file name. Why is this? I am looking in the pictures section in Iphoto in either data, modified or original. I discovered this problem when I was uploading photos into www.snapfish.co.uk to print...when I browse the folder to look for my filenames I realised that they hadnt changed in pictures...sorry for the ramble but any suggestions would be great...

To use a file with web based email just export it to the desktop using the File->Export->File Export option, resizing as needed and using the "Use Title" option. Or you can Control-click on the thumbnail and in the Contextual menu select the "Show file". That will take you immediately to the file in its folder via the Finder. There you can copy to the desktop or upload to your email or web site as the case may be. But that will be using the full sized file.
Remember what PhillyPhan warned you about: Don't tamper (edit, rename or move) with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. That's the cardinal sin of iPhoto.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Changing the actual filename in iPhoto library?

I am now finally starting to sift through the largest of my iPhoto libraries - tagging them by company and town, etc.
When I was in the initial tagging phase (using a smart album showing me all those that had no tags), I noticed one picture with Greenbush in the filename seemed out of place in the date order and a check against the map showed that it should have been named Neche instead. I changed the title accordingly, added the proper tags, and went on to the next picture.
Now, with all the pictures tagged, I am going back through them all, using a smart album to show the tags one by one, so I can weed out duplicates, flag ones needing retakes, deleting those "why?" pictures, etc.
I typed in Green expecting to pull up Green Valley (and Greenbush in the process) and iPhoto pulled up the picture I expected to see AND the picture whose title I changed - there was nothing that I could see that would cause it to come up under Greenbush instead of Neche, but it still was. I had to export the picture to see that changing the title does NOT change the filename. ¿håå?
Is there a way to safely change the actual filename within iPhoto without having to export, change the filename, and reimport? (which is what I did to fix the picture)

That is correct - it is the way it works

No - the file names are immaterial while your photos are in the iPhoto database - you have no need to look at the files and should not be - only when you take them out (export does it matter or can you change them)

  • "Edited versions will be saved in the iPhoto library"

"When you edit these images in iPhoto, however, the edited versions will be saved in the iPhoto library, not your original files. Your original files remain untouched."
Is there any way for this not to happen? I love iPhoto for integration with other iLife apps, but managing folders may be a deal breaker for me. I tweak nearly every photo I have and I'm constantly running out of space on my hard drive. With iPhoto's hidden folders, makes managing photos horrendous.
I really, really wish iPhoto would adopt some of Picasa's user-friendly features.

iPhoto follows the mandate of good Digital Asset Management, always keeping a digital negative that is untouched and save for later use. All good DAM applications follow that mandate.
If you're running out of space you can get an external HD to run your full/primary library on and have a second, smaller library on the Macbook. It can contain the more recent or most needed photos. You can also use iPhoto Library Manager to easily switch between the two and copy events and/or albums between the two while keeping keywords, titles and descriptions intact.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Can't see iPhoto pics that are edited in PS and saved back to iPhoto

Photos that are edited in Photoshop and saved back into iPhoto don't show up in the iPhoto window. Only the originals show up. When I do a search, I see that they are saved in a "modified" folder inside iPhoto. How can I see them in the iPhoto window? I would like to "trash" some of them. Can I just drag them to the trash from the "modified" folder or will that foul up the iPhoto database?

    Maybe this will help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds.

Not while in the iPhoto database (where the file name is immaterial since you access the photos by other means -not by file name - click here for a discussion on how to properly access your iPhoto photos. for use outside of iPhoto simply export the photos (file menu ==> export) and set the option to use the title as the file name

  • From iPhoto. I simply took a PDF and saved it to iPhoto as a photo and then sent it as an embedded "photo" that was my document. Since changing to Lion, I cannot do it this way. Help!

I used to send embedded documents rather than as an attachmentfrom iPhoto. I simply took a PDF and saved it to iPhoto as a photo and then sent it as an embedded "photo" that was my document. Since changing to Lion, I cannot do it this way. Help!

I found the solution on another post by user rbii:
You can add this using Automator:
    - Run automator, select File->New, chose Print Plugin
    - From the PDFs part of the library drag "Render PDF Pages as Images" to the workflow on the right, set resolution to 200.
    - From the Photos part of the library drag "Import Files into iPhoto" to the workflow section.
    - Save the workflow
That should get you back this feature."
Save the workflow as "Save PDF to iPhoto" and you'll get that option back on the list. Hope this helps!

  • How to batch change filenames in iPhoto 09?

I have a dilema... The photos I've taken with my Leica have a certain filename convention (e.g. L0001, L0002, etc.) and the photos I've taken with my Canon have a different filename convention (e.g. IMG_0001, IMG_0002, etc.).
When I import these photos into iPhoto they are arranged my date and time, which is what I want. When I upload these photos (all one giant Event) to my MobileMe gallery they are uploaded and arranged chronologically but by filename, meaning all the Leica photos are first in their order, then all of the Canon photos in their order. The MobileMe gallery does not match my Event.
    How can I fix this?
    -Keith

you can not change file names in iPhoto - it is critical that you NEVER make any changes of any sort to the content or structure of the iPhoto library
YOu can export the files using the option to sequentially name them
You can change the file names prior to importing to iPhoto (use image capture to download your files and use a program like name mangler to batch rename them)

  • IPhoto: strange behaviour with preview thumbnails

Is there a simple way in iPhoto 8 to rebuild the thumbnail database?
I recently noticed a strange behaviour iPhoto 8 has with previews: In some of my event categories, iPhoto does not display the correct preview thumbnail of the picture, but a preview thumbnail of another event. When I click on the thumbnail, it reloads the appropriate preview and it does not happen again - with that picture. Also, if I double click an event to open it, the small thumbnail of the event's key photo that is to be displayed in the title bar (next to the All Events button) is not always correct.
    Thank you for your help!
    Stefan

I have similar problems (lately) with iPhoto 6.0.6 -- thumbnails do not equal the images they 'thumbnail' of.
Sometimes when it opens, it (recently) asked me to rebuild the thumbnails, but not always.
Can I force a thumbnail rebuild using the command you gave - Apple-option while opening iPhoto? In iPhoto 6.0.6 this primarily forces a new selection of a library.

  • Export from iPhoto 08 with sequential filenames retaining iPhoto order?

Is there some way to export photos from iPhoto 08 with filenames that will be seen by the Finder (or a PC) as having the same order as the photos in iPhoto? I used the Sequential Filenames option in the Export pane to export a 1790 image album, but the sequence numbers were assigned as 1,2, 3, .... , 1790. That is ordered in the Finder, or on a PC, as 1, 10, 100, 1000, 1001, etc., and when my son displayed them using his Play Station 3, that is the order in which they came up. If the sequence numbers were assigned as 0001, 0002, 0003, ... , 1790, I would expect the files to retain the desired order, but I can't find a way to accomplish this.

Is there some way to export photos from iPhoto 08 with filenames that will be seen by the Finder (or a PC) as having the same order as the photos in iPhoto
Yes there is. Put the photos in an album, sort them as desired, go to the Photos->Batch Change->Title to Text with the checkbox ticked to add a sequential number.
Next, export those sequentially retitled photos using the File->Export->File Export menu option with the format set to JPG and theFile Name set to Title. This will give you what you want.

  • Kens Burns effects not saved in "original" saved slideshows in iphoto 11

i upgraded from iphoto 9 to iphoto 11. I have several saved slideshows. When I opened the saved slideshows in iphoto11 some of the Ken Burns effects were lost (some turned out to be Ken Burns effects on a landscape photos). I tried to add the Ken Burns effects to the landscape photo in the "original theme" and could not do so. The effect would operate until I closed iphoto11 and then would fail to operate when I reopened iphoto and ran the saved slideshow. This also occurred when I made a new saved slideshow. This issue only occurred in landscape photos and did not occur in portrait photos. The Ken Burns effects on a portait photo was updated when going from 9 to 11 and new Ken Burns effects could be added to a new and old saved slideshow.
Of the 12 Themes in saved slideshows only Ken Burns and Original have Ken Burns effects available. The Ken Burns effects are saved when Iphoto 11 is closed for both portrait and landscape photos in the Ken Burns theme and for portrait photos in the Original Theme. Landscape photos did not save in the "original theme"
I wondered if some how my library was corrupted so I went to a MAC store and made saved slideshows using their machine and their iphoto 11. I reproduced these results on an Apple store IMAC. Apple is aware

    SixPack:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As TD pointed out, making a QT movie file of a slideshow involves rendering which is then encoded once again in iDVD. IMO, the best image quality for a slideshow is obtained when you create the slideshow entirely within iDVD. Of course there's no KB effect.
If you create the show in iMovie you can get around the double encoding by closing iMovie once the slideshow is finished. Then open the iMovie project file/package (Option-click on the project file and select Show Package Contents option), find the iDVD folder and drag the .mov file in it into the open iDVD window. This will let iDVD do the rendering of the various transitions and special effects and provide a better final product.
You must remember that iDVD's final resolution is only 640 x 480.

  • Editing filenames/Organizing iphoto photos on HD

Hi, i am pretty new to using iphoto and i just got back from a trip and have imported about 500 photos in iphoto. ive noticed that you can change the title of each photo but the actual filename stays the same (i.e. dsnc0050.jpg). i find this really annoying because i send a lot of photos in emails and they are hard to find with these abstract filenames. also, in connection with this, is there a way to organize the photos for iphoto under one folder instead of having them split into modified and original folders with many "rolls" in each of those? i hope this is clear...thanks!
    macbook Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    freepaco
The philosophy of iPhoto is simple, leave the original file untouched. That's why adding a title in iPhoto doesn't change the filename.
    However all is not lost.
i find this really annoying because i send a lot of photos in emails and they are hard to find with these abstract filenames
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files using the title you've given it and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
is there a way to organize the photos for iphoto under one folder instead of having them split into modified and original folders with many "rolls" in each of those?
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
So, no, you cannot re-organise the iPhoto Library Folder - however the tips above might make that unnecessary. By all means, posts again if you need more clarification.

    TD

  • Saving attachments in iphoto

Ive received 6 emails containing around 10 jpgs in each email. How can I move these to iphoto, there must be an easier way than saving to desktop then draging to the iphoto library.

Not 100% sure but you might be able to drag the image from the email right to the iphoto icon (if it is in your dock).
Also, instead of dragging the files from where you save them, go to the file menu add to library, and select them all at once.
If you upgrade to 10.4 Tiger Mail has a great feature. You can view photos as a slide show and click an onscreen button and the picture gets sucked to iphoto, ot you can just save strait to iPhoto.

  • Filenames in iPhoto

Is it true that there is no method for safely editing a photo's filename once the photo has been imported into iPhoto? By "safely", I mean without corrupting the iPhoto library.
Also, if I delete a photo in iPhoto, is it completely deleted from the hard drive or just from the iPhoto library?
And, finally, I have been told that the photo titles in iPhoto are "Exif metadata". What is "Exif metadata"?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. To change the file name of a photo in iPhoto simply change the title under the thumbnail to what you want. Then when you're ready to use that file outside of iPhoto export it out of iPhoto using the option to use the Title as the new file name. In the meantime you can use the title while you're in iPhoto as if it were the file name.
EXIF stands for Exchangeable image file format. The format consists of camera data that is embedded into the file at the time it is created and read by applications which can read those fields in the file. It's all camera data.
See the lower section of this screenshot:
If you delete a photo from an iPhoto Event it will be completely deleted from the library AND the hard drive. You need to remember to empty iPhoto's Trash bin (many forget and just pile up a lot of photos).
