Saving files locally and in iCloud

Just today I tried to access a numbers file in iCloud. I got the message index.xml not found (or something similiar). Luckily I had an old version of the file in Time Machine. This got me thinking though about what if this happened again. I have now stored all my iCloud files locally as well as in the cloud. There is no way to backup iCloud is there? Anyway my question is as follows - when I edit a file locally and save it locally can it be automatically saved in iCloud as well or do I have to manually do this?

You can't do both in one operation. BTW, all iWork files stored on icloud are also stored locally, in
~/Library/Mobile Documents. So you should be able to perform a Time Machine restore for that folder.

What you want to do will be easiest with Yosemite and iOS 8 on your iPhone. Then you can store iWork documents on iCloud Drive and access them on your mobile devices, but also locally on your Mac. See this support document: iCloud Drive FAQ

When PE12 uploads to social media sites does it cache the file locally and, if so, where is it?

I've uploaded a few videos to Vimeo but I also want to keep the rendered file locally; however, I can't figure out where it might be if a copy is kept locally. I've looked in the "C:\Users\Rich\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\Media Cache Files" directory and do not see it there.
Somewhere that file must exist, at least until the upload is complete and then perhaps it is deleted by Premiere. I don't want to wait and download the file from Vimeo because they monkey with the video before they post it.

Thank you A.T. Romano. I guess I never got that far in the Vimeo documentation so thank you for pointing that out to me. I did not know that they kept the original for me to download along with the same movie in a few different formats, too. That's a nice feature that I was unaware of when I decided to buy the membership.
I just starting using Vimeo. I got a Plus account for $60(US) per year and am quite happy so far. The upload limits are interesting, but workable for me and they work well for my project.
My current Premiere project:
I have 42 AVI video files, each made from a 2 hr. VHS tape or a 1 hour 8MM digital tape and all of them contain family videos. The AVI files from the 2 hour VHS tapes are mostly about 27GB in size! I'm editing them and cleaning them up in Premiere and then uploading to Vimeo. When they are encoded and uploaded by Premiere they are generally just under Vimeo's 5GB per week limit for a Plus account Because of this per week limit I am using it to pace myself - I plan to edit and upload a video per week for 42 weeks. Already, after just one upload, my adult kids (the stars of the movies), wife and others are asking for the next one already.
I digitized these movies about 4 years ago and they have been sitting patiently, waiting and waiting and waiting for me to eventually edit and distribute them. Finally I am getting around to doing it and now have a workflow schedule to keep me organized so that I now have a finish date for the project!
I have all of my original AVI files backed up and stored off location at my dad's house, but it's nice to know that I have another backup in the cloud, too.

Errors when saving contacts locally and syncing them between MacBook and iCloud

Last night I detected that the synchronisation of contacts between my MacBookPro (Yosemite, 13" Retina, late 2013) and iCloud is no longer working. Sync between iCloud and iOS devices (with iOS 8.1) works fine.
The problem effects the exchange of information from MBP to iCloud as well as the other way around. However, the issues are slightly different.
No matter what changes (changing existing contacts, creating new ones or creating/changing groups) I do directly in iCloud (which I usually don't do – I was just testing), none of them get synced to my MBP (though they do sync to all iOS devices).
If I do work on my MBP the situation is a bit different:
If I change any existing contact, those changes are not synced.
If I create a new contact in the "all contacts" group, it syncs to iCloud. If I make changes to that newly created contact, they are again not synced.
If I create a new contact in any other group, the contact does not sync.
If I create a new group, that group is displayed in iCloud as "new group", i.e. the name I gave it is lost on the way... If I add contacts to this group (again on the MPB), they do not sync.
If I create a new group using the option "create group from selected contacts" those contacts are synced to iCloud but the name of the group is again only "new group". Contacts added later to that group also don't sync.
Worst of all, everything that does not sync to iCloud, is lost once I close the Contacts app, meaning this information is not even stored on my MPB. OS X does not display any error messages. However, looking into the console, I found this message repeatedly whenever I was making changes to contacts etc (not only upon closing the app):

I have tried the troubleshooting listed here: Get help using iCloud Contacts (i.e. disabled and reenabled the sycn through iCloud in Preferences > iCloud and checked the login information etc)
And I also do not exceed any of the limits for contacts listed here: iCloud: Limits for Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, and Bookmarks

I don't know if this is applicable for you, but this solved it for me.
My initial situation was the following, Ipad, Iphone and iMac where syncing well. But not my Macbook Pro. So I did this Get help using iCloud Contacts - Apple Support and this Sync Services: Advanced troubleshooting for contact and calendar syncing - Apple Support . As result all my contacts, even the view I had where gone on my macbook. I tried rebooting and restartting but nothing helped.
Then I did the following. I backuped all the cards from contacts on my imac (by moving them into a folder) and backuped them by export as archive.
Afterwards I disconnected from icloud on my imac, then reconected and deleted all contacts from the addressbook. I double checked if they where gone on icloud.com too. Afterwards I just moved them back from the folder to the address book. again double checked on icloud.com and the my macbook started syncing properly.
Which of the things I finally solved it, I don't know for sure. But I assume it was the one with deleting and restoring everything on another machine.

Muse isn't saving changes locally and constant request to merge files

I have had this problem occur now several times and it getting to a point that MUSE is not saving me time but actually wasting hours of my time.

Now I need that online version to download back to my pc otherwise I will end up having to redo hours of work.
How do I do that?
Also, when I open this site Muse prompts to merge changes...'this site has been changed, do you want to merge the changes?' If I say yes it finds two or three very old changes (such as small text errors) and so I merge them, but again and again and it makes no differnce, Muse always comes up with these same errors.
However end all, it doesnt always save correctly so how can I clean up this mess?

You cannot make arbitrary edits to your online site and have them pulled back into Muse. The only edits that are supported are those enabled by the Business Catalyst In-Browser Editing UI (which enables simple text edits and image replacement, no formatting changes). All layout and formatting changes must be done in Muse.

I have to change computers, but my iPhone is synched to the one in my office. How do I synch it to a new computer and not lose all my previously saved files in iTunes or iCloud?

I heard that if you sych your iPhone from a new computer, it overwrites or throws out the things that you stored before. I don't want that to happen, so what do I do? I am changing jobs and the best computer I had before was the one at work, so I synched there. I found pictures I just took already on the computer, so it is actively synching.

Saving files locally using captive runtime?

Hi All,
I'm creating an app using Flash Builder 4.7 and trying to export as an Air-powered desktop executable (.exe / .app) using Captive Runtime. End users won't have permissions for an Air installer.
Part of the app uses a gallery where users can upload images. These are stored locally on their computer, and a local XML file with reference to the images is updated.
This works fine with an Air Installer, as an application directory is created. My question is - does this work using Captive Runtime? Is an application directory created on the end user's machine, and if so where is it (the applicationStorageDirectory)?
When I try to run from within FB 4.7 as an extendedDesktop I get the error below. Is this because it's not packaged up properly?
Error: Error #3003: File or directory does not exist. at flash.filesystem::File/copyTo()
Any advise would be great, I urgently need to get this project out.

Ok yeah, but...
Lets say the user runs the application from the jar file through JWS.
Its the first time he start the app. The app starts through the Main class inside the jar. Where on the local computer is the application running from? From which directory?
Since it is the first time he start it, we need to somehow check our /conf/ folder for the program to see if it contains a conf.ini file. So where is this folder? Where can we check for it? We need somewhere to know where it is... I don't even know from where the application is running, or where the jar files are stored when starting from JWS. Preferably, when starting the application it should check something like
/Programs/theapplication/conf/conf.ini for it.
But how do we know the "/Programs" is somewhere to be found...
Its kind of a real mess using the JWS compared to simply having the application running from its own folder somewhere on the computer. As in you simply compress your application into a .zip file and the user unzip it wherever he want it on the system and simply runs the application from inside it. Then you don't need to worry at all about anything outside of the application folder. You have your /application/conf/ directory and you run your jar file from the main folder so you can easilly access anything below it.
If someone could give an example on how to set it up i would be grateful.

Saving files, location and format

I just recently purchased a macbook pro, with the aperture software installed, and have a question reguarding the files used in the program.
I know that when you import photos, you must put them in a project, however i would like to know where this project is saved. Also, when i delete a project, if it deletes just the project and any modifications i have made to the master photos, and what happens to the master photos afterwards. Does the non destructive format follow to this as well? What about if i import from memory card to aperature, does it save a master image, and then put it in a project, or what happens?

When you launch Aperture, it will create a file in the Pictures folder called "Aperture Library. aplibrary"
This location can be changed from within Aperture/Preferences, but Aperture will not move this library file to the new location. If you need to move it, use Finder. If you don't move it, Aperture will create a new library in your newly chosen location when you next start Aperture. To prevent confusion, make sure you move or delete (so long as there are no required images in it) an unused library file.
I know that when you import photos, you must put them in a project, however i would like to know where this project is saved.
Aperture physically stores all images within a folder structure within this library. The library is a package, and can be navigated in Finder by right mouse clicking and choosing "Show Package Contents." When you do this, and you've imported some images, you will see some project files projectname.approject. These again are packages (groupings of file/folders). If you open one of these packages you will see a folder per image (image name)which contains the imported image, some index files and any version files for adjustment versions you may have created. Note the size of the version files are tiny, as only the rules/parameters are saved, not the image data itself ... which remains unaltered and pristine in the image name file).
Hence non-destructive editing is achieved without significant impact on disk space.

They will be imported into the above structure under a project you are pointing at during import with that project's name. The "master" will be copied into this project and 3 - 4 support files (all small), including one that is the template to become the first version you create as you make adjustments. NOTE: Each master, its support files (metadata, index, etc), version files are all stored in one folder per master within the project package. The master is not altered or stored in a proprietary structure and so can be copied out using Finder if necessary ... although Spotlight does not scan packages that I know of.
Also, when i delete a project, if it deletes just the project and any modifications i have made to the master photos, and what happens to the master photos afterwards.
If you delete a project, or a master image within a project, the deletion is NOT undo-able within Aperture. However, the deletions do go into Trash under a folder"Aperture" You can drag and drop images out of here and re-import, or drag the project out and re-import.

Saving files very slow, and sometimes crashes.

When saving files, it is extremely sluggish, regardless of what the file contains (tons of images, or a few shapes with text). When the "Progress" window pops up, the program will grey out, and display the Not Responding in the header, and appear completely unresponsive. Though it does eventually save the file. This is a work computer, so I don't do anything besides Photoshop and Illustrator. The system specs are:
Windows 7 64
12GB RAM
Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.80HZ
I don't see it as being a hardware issue, as I mentioned this delay happens regardless of the type I am working with. I experience this when saving files locally, and saving them on our network, both yield the same results.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that this hasn't always been like this. Few weeks ago it was all working flawlessly (even just saving to the network directly instead of copying), it's just been slowly getting worse.

Check your printers. this error is related to the default printer and print service. If you have an offline or unconnected printer, this is most likely your issue.
Remove any offline or old/duplicate references to networked printers. If the printer is timing out, you will experience lag in Photoshop and Illustrator even on fast systems.
If you did not have any old printers, then recreate and update your print driver, as you may have a corrupt .ppd file.

Yesterday I had a Drop Box folder on the Powerbook showing up properly on the Mini.
Never have gotten a DropBox folder on the Mini to be found from the Powerbook.
Today after some reboots for other reasons, no connection. I try the "Go" menu that used to work for 192.168.1.3 and get
"The server “192.168.1.3” is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally.
Okay.
Where is it and how do I find it to access it?

Apple Configurator to update IOS, store file locally

Hi
I've got a project to rollout 300 iPhone 5, these require the latest IOS.
Using Apple Configurator I plug in 4 phones then click prepare, so gets the latest update.
Can this process be speeded up by storing the IOS file locally and click other?
I have downloaded the 6.1 file, but this didn't work, said couldn't find the file.
Any help would be appreaciated.

Where is the .ipsw file saved? I can't locate it on the drive by searching...
It's a good thing I have that older 6.0.1.... The 6.1 update doesn't work on any of my iPad 2's via configurator. It just bricks them and I have to connect to iTunes in order to kick them out of recovery. Even trying to update via iTunes, it just says "The iPad "iPad" count not be restored. The device isn't elligible for the requested build."

Adding file name and file full path to a page

Hi all I'm new to scripting
What I want to do and don't know how to go about it is to run a script that collects the saved file name
and the full path where the file is saved on the network and displays it on my document
If any one has done something similar or if some one can help me create it it would be appreciated

Problem saving files across Mac network

Hi all, hoping someone has run into this and can help—
We're running into a problem working with trying to find a way to have multiple users modify the same indd file without having to change the Sharing and Permissions on an individual file basis?

Not a server per se (and maybe that's the problem), but it's just one Intel iMac running Leopard with the InDesign files on it, and one newer iMac running Snow Leopard trying to read/work with the files. The protocol is AFP. For the second user (newer Mac) it forces a "Save As" instead of "Save" and then denies permission to overwrite the original. If they save the file locally and replace the original, the same thing then happens to the first user.
We've checked permissions on the files, and everything should be accessible. I'm wondering if the differing versions of the OS might have something to do with it, though I don't know why it would. Will upgrade anyway, but in the meantime Adobe keeps saying it's a Mac issue, and Mac keeps blaming Adobe. Thanks for taking the time to respond, btw.

Saved file goes back to old version after crash

Hello everyone,
Has anybody had issues with Illustrator (5.5 or 6) with previously saved files crashing and going back to old versions? I've had it happen quite often. I start a new file, save it, close it. Next day or so I reopen, keep adding elements and saving in between. Next time, the same... Then it crashes and as I reopen the file it's back to day 1 or 2, rather than the latest times I've saved. Strangest thing ever!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies. I was starting to wonder if it was just me having this issue. I'm saving to my work PC laptop (Lenovo), but has has this also on my Mac.
I've read about the network and external drives issue, but I've always avoided working anywhere else but my internal HDs. Not using graph tool but it's hard to narrow it down as I work on so many different projects at the same time.The latest file has been saved as something new and modified a couple of times (complex vector icons, but no shading/3D nor links). I do NOT have the "save compatible pdf"nor compression options enabled.
Other designers at work don't seem to have this issue, but they don't work with AI as often as myself, and mostly stick to the standard features.I would really like to figure this out as it's slowing me down and surely getting other people to wonder what I'm doing with my time (besides spending it here ).
Is it possible Adobe is unaware of this problem???
