Saving files to get large TIFFs

I am using Lightroom 2.0 on a Windows XP on a PC desktop. I'm shooting with a Nikon DSLR D80 in NEF (Nikon's RAW format). Each RAW files is about 7-9 megabytes. The D80 is 10 Megapixels.
When I import files and then save them as TIFFs, even if there has been no cropping and almost no color adjustments, the file is saved as 55 megabytes. In fact, even if there is cropping, Lightroom will export the TIFF at 55 megabytes.
I would like to save them as large as possible in order to print large files at high resolution.
Is there something I need to do with my import/export settings? If so, what should I do?
Basically my goal is to have largest possible file to work with and then to save as TIFF to get the most out my prints.
Thanks!!
Allen

RAW files are mosaiced, which means there is only one (typically 12-bit) greyscale value per pixel each representing a photosite with either a red, green or blue filter . The raw converter demosaics (a sort of interpolation process) this into full RGB values at each pixel location. So for the RAW, 10 Megapixel*12bit/8bit=15 MB. With compression that is about 8 MB as you observed. Demosaic this, and you get 30 MB for a 8-bit tiff (i.e. 10MP*3 bytes/pixel), or 60 MB for 16 bits, even if you do not also scale in the process as the others noted. Compression gets this down to 2/3 of that value typically. Of course, if you scale the image in the export panel, you will always get the same size file. This has nothing to do with the print quality BTW.

  • CS6- FW- When saving file, I get "Could not complete your request"

In great anticipation, I downloaded the trial version of Fireworks (CS6). I loaded all my custom Styles; Swatches; Symbols; Keyboard Shortcuts...
Spent a few minutes in my document. When I tried to save my document, I got the same/dreaded dialog (see attachment) I've endured from CS5:
    "Could not complete your request.
    An error occurred."
Ugh... this is the most frustrating dialog (it isn't very descriptive or prescriptive; and i can't save any of my work). this is a known issue (at least since 2009) and yet they haven't fixed it. this upgrade suddenly is useless to me. Same bug I experience for CS5.
    Any advice/suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sasha

Does anyone have any other ideas as this is very frustrating.

  • PS CS6 Won't open large TIFF it just saved

I just saved and closed a large TIFF with a couple of layers.  I thought that it was under 2Gb, but the finder says that it is 2.4Gb.  Now when I try to open it, I get an error message saying that the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.  I get a progress bar that shows it trying to open, then as it gets almost finished, the error dialogue pops up.
Do I have any recourse to recover this file, at this point?  I will certainly switch the format to PSB if I can get it open, but right now that is looking doubtful.
    Thanks,
    Ron

Photoshop will save and open TIFF files up to 4 Gig, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Another application should be able to recover the composite image (since that's always present in TIFF).
But I'm not sure why the layer data would be failing unless you had a disk corruption problem -- and we haven't had other people report this problem, so it is probably a localized incident.
You could try opening it in an older version of Photoshop and see if that works.

Mac Book Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

As said above, this behaviour is completely normal and a result of Excel (MS Office in general) being a PPC based program that is not optimized for the Intel structure yet. Therefore it runs under Rosetta and suffers from a crippling lag in responsiveness.
Office 2007 will be a universal binary and should net you normal speeds again. It is set to be released within the first quarter of 2007 for Windows and a Mac OS version will follow shortly thereafter.

  • Automatically Slicing Large TIFF Files with Photoshop 5.1

I am trying to automatically slice a very large TIFF file (800 MB) into 28 equally-sized rectangles using Actions (it is a scanned image of 28 scientific slides and reducing the resolution is not an option). My goal is to start with the TIFF file and end up with a folder that contains 28 separate files. I'll do this on many such TIFF files, so it needs to be coded into an action.
So far I have an action that creates guides in a grid pattern and then converts the guides to 28 individual rectangular user slices that together cover the entire screen. Unfortunately the file is far too large  to use with the "Save for Web & Devices" tool and I also can't export to TIFF from that tool. So I made an action that individually selects each slice (using the slice select tool), copies it, creates a new file, pastes the image, saves it as a flattened, non-compressed TIFF into a new folder, then closes the file. When I try to run this I get the following error:
The command "Select" is not currently available
              -- Continue --       -- Stop --
If I press Continue the action is not carried out. If I press Stop and select the slice manually there is no problem (but then my action will not be fully automated). The image is in 8-bit RGB mode, and I've also tried converting the locked Background layer into a standard layer. I don't see any reason why the select command shouldn't be available! There is only one layer and there are user slices available for selection. I tried separating the slicing and select/import jobs into 2 different actions but it still didn't work.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  • Large Tiff files

In our digital print department, all of our techs use PC's, we are seeing really large tiff file sizes. Our techs are opening pdf files in Photoshop, flattening them, and saving as tiff's. The file size of the tiffs are much, much larger than the pdf files before flattening. Our techs just started seeing this recently. Can someone tell me how they usually make tiffs (settings used) or if there is a hidden setting that might need to be changed?

This is entirely normal. A TIFF will almost always be larger than a PDF, unless the PDF was raster; most are vector. However, if the files are larger than before, you probably have a different resolution than before.

  • Can Photoshop open large TIFF files?

    Hi,
Windows 32-bit OS cannot open TIFF files bigger than 4GB. I need to work on TIFF files that have a size up to 10GB. Does Photoshop support this?
    Thanks,

The scanned files come from a big Roche cells scanner. Computers which have the Roche utility software can open it and those computer are in 32-bit or 64bit. I have even downloaded a TIFF image, from the nasa site, of 25GB and i could open it on my 32bit Windows OS.
After doing some research, I found the following site http://www.remotesensing.org/libtiff/document.html . From there, I went to the following site : http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/tifftags/extension.html and it seems that some tags within the tiff files are not recognized by some viewers.
I also installed Microsoft KB2635500 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2635500, which solves issues when we try to display a large TIFF file that contains multiple pages, althought this is not the case as we speak of a single file. I also should have tried before installing this KB.
The tiff file (9GB) the user obtained when scanning with a Roche cell scanner is a TIFF file extension. The file I downloaded from the NASA website is also a TIFF file (25GB). I have a 32-bit OS and I could open the NASA tiff file without any problem but another user with a 32-bit OS cannot open any tiff file bigger than 4GB. That user gets the error message stating the file is corrupted or not supported.
I will check later on in the morning when this user arrives.

Travel and detours have kept me from following up sooner. If the problem that you wrote about still persists.....
Let us go back over that Adobe document regarding troubleshooting damaged projects.
    3. Delete the Application Preferences

    7. Test to see if individual media files are causing the problem.
That is an important one. How far did you get into following the instructions given in the document? If you could not complete the test, what was the major block that prevented you from doing so?
I want to make sure that we have gone through everything in that document and ruled all factors there in or out. If it was a matter of you not understanding the instructions, I am hoping that the above will channel you questions to me so that I can clarify anything that you did not understand in the Adobe document instructions.
I do not recall if I asked previously. Even if you cannot open all your saved/closed projects, can you still open a new project and save/close it? Maybe even reopen it?
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.

  • File not getting Saved on Application Server

    Hello All,
We created a file in "Automatic Payment Transactions (F110 Transaction)" and are able to save the text file on Local drive. But for our e-banking requirement we need to store this file on our application server. The configuration settings in OBPM4 are already done and now system is picking the default application server path while saving file in "Payment Medium - > DME Administration" transaction. The problem is - although the system is picking the required path of application server but file is not getting saved. The error coming is: File <path> could not be opened (Message Number: FZ231).
We have checked for 777 authorisations (OS authorisations) for the folder.
Please suggest that what can be done to resolve th issue.
    Regards,

What exactly we need to check in Payment program? We are not able to save the file on application server. There is no problem while saving the same in local drive.

  • Getting large file sizes in AppleScript...

For starters I am new to AppleScript. Please excuse my lack of knowledge.
I am trying to get file sizes for large files and kicking that out to a text file. Problem is that all these files are a gigabyte and up. When I use:
set fileSIZE to size of (info for chosenFile) as string
    --result is 1.709683486E+9
    I also tried using:
    tell application "Finder"
set theSize to physical size of chosenFile
    end tell
    --result is 1.724383232E+9
So, my question is there another way that shows me the bytes in this format "1,709,683,486" bytes.
The "size of (info for chosenFile)" shows the right numbers "1.709683486". I don't really need the commas. I had a larger file of 44GB and the result was 4.4380597717E+10.
How do I remove the ".", the "E+9" or "E+10"?

looks like hubionmac has found a winner.
    perhaps not:

how can i get my saved files from 4.1 to show up on 5.n?

The document saving portion of the app was moved to the printer control app for the 5.0 update. You can use file sharing to copy the files from your device with 4.1, and then copy them in to the printer control app after. This can either be done wirelessly, or by USB through itunes. The document below will show you how to do both options to get them copied off of the device. Then you simply do the same steps in the printer control app to copy files back in.

  • How does the icon get created for a saved file

In my program I allow saving files using JFileChooser and ActionListener.
In the constructor of the main class which extends JFrame I also set an icon by saying:
    this.setIconImage(new ImageIcon("image.jpg").getImage());
This does not only set an icon on the title bar and the minimized window, it also creates an icon on my saved files. However, the image quality for the icon on my saved files is bad, even though the image quality for the other icons is ok. The size of the icon image I am providing is close to the size of the icon image on my saved files.
How did the icon get created for my saved files? Is it possible to improve the image quality?
    Thanks for looking at this!

    I just realized that
    this.setIconImage(new ImageIcon("image.jpg").getImage())
did not create the icon for my saved files.
So what did create it? I did not program it!
However, I happen to have an icon file Ananya.ico where I have my java project. I use if for my installation file. Did Java use this icon?
