Saving folder structure after having to rebuild iPhoto library?

After my iPhoto library crashed I recreated it (by creating a "new" iPhoto library) and managed to save all pictures. However, the previously created folder structure is gone. Is there a way to get it back? It looks like it still technically exists in the original library but I can't access it, because iPhoto crashes everytime I try to open that one.
Thanks!

Did you try repair the old library?
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto crashes even after trying to rebuild iPhoto library database.

iPhoto won't open after I synced new iPhone 5s to my Mac v10.6.8. I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again.  I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it. I have checked for latest software updates and it appears to be update. My iphoto is version 7.1.5
The log for my error is below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again.
What you have accessed here are iPhoto's own repair tools. iPhoto Library Manager is a 3rd party application.
I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it
By default your iPhoto Library is in your Pictures Folder.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Can I revert back to an older version of iphoto after having updated my iphoto?

can I revert back to an older version of iphoto after having updated my iphoto?

Not unless you saved a copy of the old iPhoto Library. Otherwise, you can't go back.

  • Rebuilding iphoto library - why, downside, pitfalls

It seems easy to rebuild iPhoto library.
    1. Will it fill iPhoto with duplicates of those already successfully viewed in my iPhoto?
    2. Is there a reason to NOT rebuild iPhoto library?
    3. Will I then see photos I thought were gone?
    4. Would the rebuild transfer the original, full-sized photos or just thumbnails?
    5. Would only a fool do this for the heck of it to see what happens?

1 - rebuilding has not effect on duplicates - it will neither create nor remove them - it simply fixes the database
2 - no reason to unless you have a problem - if you like the way iPhoto works dfor you then there is no reason to rebuild
3 - often - it depends on why you thought they were gone - if they are not showing due to problems with the database then it will - if they are not showing because they are gone then it will not - the only way to find out is to do it
4 - the rebuild transfers nothing - it simply rebuilds the database
5 - what ever you want - again if things are good then why
in any case since step one of all experianced users recomendation is to always have a good current backup and specifically to backup prior to rebuilding then there is no risk because you have a current backup

  • Rebuilding iPhoto library changes .mov files to raw

I rebuilt my iPhoto library and since then any .mov files (specifically MJPEG) were changed to RAW in the info panel. The files haven't been changed, but if you try to view them, they small thumbnails are intact, but expanded are a triangular icon with an exclamation point. If I locate the original file and reimport it, it fixes the problem for that individual problem, but this is a tedious solution. MP4 files and H264 files were not affected. I have not been able to locate any information for a solution. Is there a way to force iphoto to change the file format so that it properly recognize that it is a video file, not an image file?
    Snow Leopard, iPhoto 9.1.5

Why do you think they've become Raw?
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Problems after rebuilding iPhoto library

After an automatic rebuild of the iPhoto library, iPhoto shows only 950 out of 7000 picture that I originally had in iPhoto. When I click on a picture, iPhoto gives me the blown up of another picture.
I have actually been having problems with iPhoto since a while. My first problem was that iPhoto kept on crashing while I carried out the smallest kind of editing. After some time, iPhoto wouldn't start at all. I have therefore backed up the library in an external hard disk and started an automatic rebuild of the library. Now I can start iPhoto but I encounter the problems described in the first paragraph.
Do I have too many pictures for one library? Is it advisable to split the pictures in two libraries? How? Or should I rather get the latest version of iPhoto from iLife? Many thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No, you don’t have too many pics for one Library. V5 of iPhoto is good for 25k images. (Later versions are good for 250k images).

  • Rebuilding iphoto library after data recovery

Recently lost my HD with 500G of photos. Luckily, I had a few means of recovering these files.
Data was recovered via 3 sources:
    (1) Time Machine backup for most of it
    (2) Online backup service (CrashPlan)
    (3) CF cards
Good news is I recovered probably 99% of the photos and videos and just a very small amount that still being backed up through the online service could not be recovered.
The question is: what is the optimal way to re-integrate the CrashPlan files into iPhoto since they are primarily Master and Preview files of some of my most recent uploads? Also, there are many Preview files that do not have a corresponding matching Master file, probably because the HD crashed before CrashPlan could back up the Master counterpart.
(Recognizing a total library restore is an option, I opted not to fully restore the CrashPlan backup from the iPhoto library level in the file structure due to the extensive amount of time it would take and the fact that at least 90% of the underlying data is duplicative of the Time Machine backup.)
I am wary of just doing a bulk import of the thousands of Master and Preview files, many of which have identical file names, seemingly a product of the way iPhoto likely breaks down imported images into files under various folders for various reasons. I was considering importing the files by first bringing in the Master files and then only importing those non-duplicative files under Previews - but figured I'd check the board for better ideas or downsides to doing it this way.
On a separate note, my MOV files pretty much universally fail to upload as an unrecognized file format for whatever reason.
    15" MBP 2009, OS X 10.9.4, iPhoto 9.5.1, 8G RAM, 256G SSD, 1T HD,

the answer is to restore the latest TM backup and it will have everything in it - why are you messing with the other sources?
the only way to "reintegrate" any photos into iPhoto is to import them into a good, working iPhoto library using iphoto to import them - importing selecting ignore duplicates is pretty good but not perfect
And it it good to import in small batches - small depends on many things including available HD space and free RAM - generally batches to 500 or smaller is good
CrashPlan is not a good backup - it it (as you found) far too slow to restore and even then tests have shown that the iPhoto library does not restore well from any Cloud backup

  • Can't see my events anymore after having up graded iPhoto to iphoto11

I up graded iphoto app to iphoto11 and i cannot see my pictures anymore, i just see the events as black boxes. If i open them I see just black squares but not pictures. It is probably a problem with The library, what should I do? Thanks

It appears a yellow big exclamation point.
I think that the iphoto library indexation system got some problems during the up grading, and now also if I see the events with the right names, the events do not point to the right folder anymore.
I could probably solve the problem importing all my pictures in iphoto again, but I’m not able to reach the folders containing the originals photo files.
If I go to iphoto library file and I try to open it, iphoto get open.
One time only I was able to open it ( I do not how, I’m not able to do it again) and I could see a folder with all pictures I modified (originals) and another folder with the modified pictures ( modified), but I could not find a folder with all my pictures.
I need to understand: 1) how can I open Iphoto library again without opening Iphoto 2) where should I look for all my pictures If I do not find the right folder in there.
    Thanks you

  • Problem with rebuilding iPhoto library

    Hi,
I'm having problem to rebuild my iPhoto library. I have more than 11 000 photos / video clips and 70Gbs in my iPhoto library and everything has been ok until I started to import photos from my new iPhone 4. First issue was that when I imported photos from iPhone those new photos disappeared after restart of iPhoto. I read from somewhere that iPhoto library rebuild -functions might help and I rebuild the library and thumbnails. It actually worked for that problem. After that those photos which I imported from iPhone remained in iPhoto and I even got some disappeared photos back. But after that rebuilt I noticed that most of the video clips could not be opened inside iPhoto. When clicking thumbnail of a video clip just a big exclamation mark jumped up. I checked from iPhoto library originals -folder that those video clips still remain. From there I can open the clips in Quicktime Player. So, I tried to rebuild my library again. Rebuilding started ok, it went smoothly up to 65% but ceased there. Now it has been in that 65% -condition for 24 hours and I don't know what to do. I don't know if it's still actually doing something or not. "Force to quit" -function does not say that iPhoto is not answering and "System Monitoring" shows that there are still some messages going on in iPhoto -process. I don't know should I force iPhoto to quit or just wait another 24 hours...
Any advices what I should do and how I can get my video clip viewing back to iPhoto?
Computer is iMac 2006 with OS 10.6.8 and iPhoto is version 9.1.5. I have both Quicktime players (7 and 10) installed.
    BR,
    Osku from Finland

If the rebuild doesn't help try Fix 101:  make a temporary, backup copy of the library if you don't already have a backup copy and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Cannot rebuild iPhoto library

My iPhoto database is damage (inconsistent). When I try to open iPhoto I just get told to select a library. When I click on the open button nothing happens.
The common advice is to: "hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto." I keep pressing the keys for a long time when I launch iPhoto. I should see the dialog box for i.e. repair the database. Nothing happens.
The database itself is about 200 Gb big. The pictures are definitely there.
    How can I repair/rebuild the library/database?

iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. What format is that Raid?
If the Library is showing as 60+ gigs then there is every possibility that the photos are still intact.
If the other rebulds haven't worked then what I would do is as follows:
Restore the back up from end 2011. At least all that will be intact.
Spend some time thinking about the fact that you always need an up-to-date back up.
Then recover the 2012 files from the damaged Library, and import them to the recovered Library. You will lose any editing that you have done, or keywording etc., but at least you'll have the shots.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Go into the damaged iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders  from 2012 to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.

  • Rebuilding iPhoto Library

I have a late 2007 iMac and over the years the file structure for my iPhoto has become corrupt where iPhoto is missing several thumbnail images.  I just bought a macbook, and was curious about the best way to transfer my pictures since the iMac iPhoto library doesn't appear to be complete.
Can I simply connect to my iMac through my network, do a search for all .jpg files, and simply drag them into iPhoto on the new Macbook?

iPhoto is missing several thumbnail images.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work
Can I simply connect to my iMac through my network, do a search for all .jpg files, and simply drag them into iPhoto on the new Macbook?
    No.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Can't rebuild iPhoto library now

I've had iPhoto problems but throught I had them licked when I broke the library into smaller ones (by year) and began using iPhoto Buddy (very nice). The libraries are about 2000 - 4000 photos in size.
I've noticed that after backing up the libraries using Intego Personal Backup, I am able to open some libraries but not others. I have one for each year since 2000. The application just crashes on open. I've tried using option-open to select a library manually as well as iPhoto Buddy.
I went to rebuild the library using option-apple-iPhoto and iPhoto doesn't even open. Any suggestions? Any thoughts around using backup software? Doesn't make sense that that would have anything to do with it since it presumably is just reading files and not doing anything to them.
I've fixed permissions, trashed preferences file, run the application off a cloned drive, etc.
    Thanks in advance.
    --David

    Hi David,
I don't think your problem is the backup software, but you never know.
    To go over your steps..
You used the Option key to switch to another library
The library did not open and iPhoto crashed. any error message?
You used Command Option to launch iPhoto to rebuild the last opened library and nothing happened.
Did iPhoto crash this time to?
-Check and make sure all the libraries are Read/Write for you
    iPhoto Library Info
    -Clean out all cache files
    OnyX
In case you want to create a new library for the ones that don't open...
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Impossibile to rebuild iphoto library

I was trying to copy my entire library to a network storage. It couldn't do because of the huge amount of faces files. I thought there was an error in my library so I tried to rebuild it.
Once rebuilding it stopped at 64%. I try to left the iphoto running for 2 days (180GB of photo...) but nothing happened. Reopening Iphoto after force shut down, it seemed to work properly, but the problem with copy remained (now worse, it stop after a few minutes).
So I tried rebuilt from the automatic backup, but everytime it goes very quickly till the 21727th element, then it stop.
If I open iphoto now it can't recognize le library and start with a new one located in the same file of the old one.
How can I do to rebuild it now?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
You know that iPhoto can't run from Network Storage, right?  iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • Needing to rebuild iPhoto library

In an attempt to move my photo collection to our external hard drive, my iphoto library (iPhoto 4.0.3) seems to have turned into unreadable files. I did the drag to the hard drive from pictures. From what I have read here I think it is time for the rebuild option. Problem is that I was trying to free up space on the internal and the rebuild instructions indicate I should have space equal to the current iPhoto library. What is the best and quickest way to empty out some internal hard drive space? Anything else I need to know about attempting this rebuild? I am using the information in apple support article #107947. Also, what is the exact method for storing my photos on the external where I have plenty of room? Thanks for your help!

Welcome motherofthedome to the discussion group.
I'm not too sure about rebuilding the library, cuz I never have had to do it. I'll leave it to other to respond on this one.
<What is the best and quickest way to empty out some internal hard drive space?>
You did not tell us anything as to what computer you are running, how much internal HD space do you have etc etc...
How big is your iPhoto library? Do you have a very high quality camera 6-8Mpixel, that takes 4MB size per picture? If you tell me that you have a G5 with 120GB internal and it's full, then you must have some enormous files in there.....Do you edit video with iMovie? it could be videos, music iTunes library could be big etc etc.... To give you an example my iTunes library is 23GB big!!!!
< Also, what is the exact method for storing my photos on the external where I have plenty of room>
1-go to the Pictures folder level
2-create a new folder in the External HD and name it "pictures" as well (or yu can add the word "backup")
3-select the iPhotolibrary click and drag over the External HD into the "Pictures Backup"
    et voila!
Now if you want to use the iPlibrary that is on the external HD as your default one for iPhoto to use, then follow theses steps below.
iPhoto has to be "inactive" or off.
1-on the Internal HD, in Pictures>iPhotolibrary add a number (any number) to the name, such as "iPhotolibrary8"
2-launch iPhoto... and you will get a dialog box telling you that iP is not able to find the library, (because we changed the name of it with the "8"- computers are dumm sometimes) and it will give you 3 choices. click on "look for the library" or similar. Then search for the library located on the External HD and voila! iPhoto will always launch with that library on the externaHD!
    Side note
Keep in mind that if your iPlibrary is very big (3GB or more - mine are about 2GB each) and you are transferring your ONLY one library to the external, then you become vulnerable to loose all your pictures should the external HD crash on you. I'm sure you have heard that It's not a matter of "if" but rather "when" can this happen to you.
It happenend to me and had to spend $800 on a company called Drive Saver to transfert the data from my 2 week old HD that crashed to a newly replaced under warranty HD. Yes the HD was under warranty, but they are not responsible to transfer the info from one HD ot another. Learn from my painfull $$ mistake.
So if you only have one copy on the external HD.... that's it! you can loose everything! I personally left my original on my internal ( I have the space), and have 4 other External HD where I make at least 3 backups of all my iPlibraries. I can't imagine all 4 drives crashing all at once! So think of a location where you would make a copy every week or so! Do you have a laptop with 80GB drive?
Backup baby backing up to DVD is too much of a hassle.
I have 8different libraries that I manage separately with the help of Iphoto buddy. This way I can switch from one library to another without having to use the "primitive change the name/ add a number" technique.
    Hope this help!

  • Cannot Rebuild iphoto Library - empty xml file

I keep my photos on an external hard drive - and last night i accidentally disconnected the hard drive while i was using iPhoto. iPhoto quit automatically as the library it was using vanished.
When i tried to restart the library after reconnecting the hard drive iPhoto is showing that there are no photos and no events. I checked the package contents and the photos (7000+) are all still there.
So i tried to rebuild the library using iphoto library manager after reading some other similar posts. Unfortunately, iPhoto library manager tells me that the library cannot be rebuilt as the xml file is empty.
Please don't tell me that i have to recreate this library - i had 100+ albums, dozens of web galleries, multiple calendars, etc. and i just can't bear the thought of losing all those hours of work. Please tell me there is another solution!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Are you sure iPhoto is pointing at the right library?
hold down the option (or alt) key when launching iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the library on the disk.
If that fails, then you won't have to recreate all the library - just restore your back up.
You do have a back up, don't you?
    Otherwise:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
