Saving Framemaker file as PDF

I saved a FrameMaker 8 file as PDF using File>Save as > PDF. When double-clicked on the PDF, it showed a message "A number was out of range". I ignored the warning and clicked on OK, and the PDF opened.
I was not getting this error till now. Why does it occur now? How can I fix it? (I have a feeling that an Adobe update I installed may be behind this).

I encountered this problem in a PDF produced using the combination of FM8 + "Save as PDF".
The "number is out of range" message is displayed upon opening the PDF in Acrobat/Reader.
Upon inspecting the Initial View settings in Acrobat (under Initial View), an excessively large number was displayed to the right of the Open to Page box (1234567890).
It turned out that the "Fit Width" setting for the "At Zoom" option in FrameMaker's PDF Settings dialog box (+"Save as PDF") was consistently responsible for the strange value and the related error. When choosing a value of "Default" or "Fit Page", the PDF was produced correctly.
This problem was not encountered when printing to a .PS file and distilling.

  • When saving photoshop file in PDF, my document changes, how do I solve this?

    Hello everybody,
Im trying to save my CS6 files as PDF documents. When I save my files as PDF some texts or images disappear or deform.
Is there anything i'm doing wrong?
Is there a setting I need to change for saving my files so they don't change?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi,
Which operating system and version of photoshop cs6 are you using?
You can find out the exact photoshop cs6 version by going to Help>System Info from within photoshop and looking at the very first line that says Photoshop Version.

  • Saving a file as PDF from CC Illustrator

Just updated from CS3 to CC Illustrator. In the old CS3 if I saved a file as a PDF. Adobe acrobat would open and I would then see the file on the screen as a PDF. Now in CC the file just save as a PDF in illustrator and doesn't reopen so I can see the document large and clear with the trim marks and bleeds. Is there a setting I need to change?
Thanks in advance. Self trained illustrator user here with little experience:) Any help is appreciated.

In the PDF Save Options (second dialog), make sure this box is checked.

  • Converting Framemaker files into PDF progaramatically using publishing server

    Hi All
    Background:
We are going for upgrade of  Frame maker 8 which is on unix system  to FM 10 or 11. We are using Framemaker mainly for renditions, i.e to convert the fm documents to PDF. To convert fm document to PDF we are using the below mentioned command line utility available in FM 8.(on unix). /opt/app/frame8.0/bin/fmprint -i -p Sample.fm.fmtpl Sample.fm Currently the the fm file which need to converted to PDF and the FM 8(installed) are available on the same unix system ,so we were able to initiate/use the command line utility of FM 8. The rendition of the FM to PDF is On -Demand.( We are not running any batch activities/ bulk renditions). We are rendering the document as soon as the document  is available.
    Requirement:
As we are going to  upgrade the FM to newer versions which would be installed on the Windows machine as Frame maker 10 or 11 will not support unix plat form, so can you please let us know which option is better to use i.e we want to convert fm file to PDF using java program without any manual intevention using publishing server/client version.
can any one help us as it is very urgent for us.
please let us know the ways to do and links for helpful documents .
thank you very much for your help in advance!!\

    Hi Ramesh...
Another alternative (if you need more control over the doument creation) is to use Leximation's AutoFM ..

  • Can you edit text after saving your file as pdf

I have recently created a letterhead in Illustrator.
Is there a way to change a person name and title after saving it as a pdf file? I heard something about creating a form in Acrobat professsional.
I need to print out a letterhead with different peoples name and title. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Can you edit the text in Acrobat Reader?
Yes, if you use Acrobat Pro to save the PDF as a Reader-enabled form.
    1. Create your letterhead in Illustrator (or whatever). Leave design space for, but do not create text objects that you want to be editable.
    2. Save as PDF.
    3. Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro. Use Acrobat's Form tools to add text fields whereever you want the end users to be able to key text.
    4. Select the Enable Reader Usage Rights command in Acrobat to make the form fields edtiable in Reader. Save the file.
Recipients of the PDF can now open it in Reader, edit the content of the fields, and save the file with their edits.

  • Re: Saving Greyscale File to PDF

This is a dumb question, but.....if I create a greyscale document in PS, and save it as a PDF, it stays greyscale, right???
    Thank you!!

Noel, pfaffenbichler, and Gernot -- thank you very much for your posts!!!!!  I appreciate your help !
I need the greyscale files to be placed in an InDesign publication, which I am creating.   Some of the greyscale files I create, some are sent to me in various formats (PDF, JPEG, Word, and Publisher files, mostly -- some are professionally created, some are not).  I create files in PS and/or ID (I know, I know, I should use AI, just never got the hang of it).  I prefer to save PS files as PDF's, because PSD's appear to be rasterized in ID (the text is no longer text).  When I receive PDF's from others, and convert them to greyscale in Acrobat, they become very dark, but at least retain the text as text.  If converted in PS, they mostly retain their original look -- BUT, then the text is no longer text!  What is the correct way of converting these files??
I will give more background.....Once a year, I use InDesign to create a booklet which is printed in CMYK, of course.  Last year, many of the black/white pages of the proof booklet had a color tinge to them.  I mentioned this to the printer, and he said he would fix it, which he did.  However, we had to print a handful more booklets, which the printer used my files, not the FIXED files, and the result was icky black & white pages.  This year, I asked the printer what I needed to do to fix this, and he said convert the files to greyscale in Photoshop.  Most of the pages which should be in greyscale, are ads which are sent to me, and I do not have the original; and a few are ads which I have created, therefore have the original files.
Long story short, I am trying to figure out the best way to be certain my black/white pages do NOT print with a color tinge, and are crisp/clear.
If you are still reading......everyone, thanks again for the help!!

  • Colour problems saving Ilustrator file to pdf and jpeg (blacks go brown + some quality is lost)

    Hi,
I was wandering id anybody could help me with a problem that has plagued me for a few projects now. I can't seem to find a solution.
When I have a file in Illustrator that I want to save as or export as a PDF or JPEG whenever I save it the colours shift and the quality drops.
Most noticiably black boxes goes to a muddy brown when saved to JPEGS, but I have also noticed tones in Photographs change quite a lot when saving as PDF.
I have tried to tweek every type of setting there is. higher resoulution, compression, sampling, down sampling, PDF preset, print quality etc.but nothing seems to sort it out. PDF's arent as much as a problem as the JPEG but the only way I have managed to get a PDF up to a reasonable standard is by wacking everything up so there is no compression or downsampling which makes ginat files I cant email....
Im sure the problem probably lies within the combination of each of these together but I cant seem to find out what that is.
Has anybody else had this problem or know how to fix it? I have been searching blogs for so long?
    Thanks
    Leo
    (Before saving to JPEG)
    (After)
Notice the black box with text in has turned a bit brown
Also brown in the seat base has gone more orange and the whole picture has generaly lost quality.

    Leo,
The file is CMYK Color Mode. Do you export to a CMYK JPEG or an RGB one?
It is conceivable that the colour conversion of photographs (which are originally RGB) may cause the PDF issue.
Obviously, you will have to choose a Color Mode. If (also) intended for print, the obvious choice is CMYK, but that often affects the appearance or artwork/images originally created in RGB.
Colour management/settings and calibration may also be significant.

  • Saving photoshop file as pdf but transparent background turns white

Am trying to save file created as photoshop file (which has transparent background) as pdf to send to printer but when I reopen the saved pdf file it appears to be on a white background? Can anybody help please?

What are you "reopening" it with?
"Photoshop PDF" is not enough information. The PDF options window has various settings for PDF versions - Acorbat 4, Acrobat 5, Acrobat 6, etc. Actobat 4 will not include transparency or layers. Acrobat 5 will include layers but not transparency, Acorbat 6 will include both layers and transparency.

  • Scanning and saving a file as pdf - 0kb Error

After a particular document is scanned and saved as .pdf file, the saved file does appear in its respective folder (Sharepoint 2013) but the size still appears as 0 KB (wherein the contents of the document are not saved).

    Michael,
Thanks for your response but I don't really understand your answer.  So you're saying that a PDF can't be saved to a server??  Regardless, I've narrowed down our problem to one particular source where we are getting PDF's from.  We've found an alternative method.

  • Saving FrameMaker files in earlier version

I created files using Unstructured FrameMaker 11. Our customer has FrameMaker 10. I saved the FrameMaker 11.0 files as Document 10 files (*.fm) and sent them to our customer. They are unable to open the Document 10 files. How do i resolve this issue?

Save them in MIF format to *.mif. That's the main purpose of MIF.
Use the highest version of MIF available to you (i.e. NOT FM 7).
If you are using any features added at FM11, your FM10 recipient will lose them, but they will be able to open the files.
if you ever need to send to someone on a version earlier than FM8, there is another potential issue with the text content of the document (Unicode). That won't arise in an FM11->10 situation.

  • Saving excel file to PDF

I can do this easily enough, but the pdf loses the lines within the document (its a prices sheet that has columns etc...and shows text only.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi biskit,
This could be a setting in the excel preferences "dont print table borders" or something along those lines, it will also apply that to exporting or saving to pdf.
Another thing you could try is file menu > print > in the print dialog that pops up at the bottom you will see an option to save as PDF, maybe that way it will show the lines.

  • Problem saving FrameMaker files

I have recently installed FrameMaker 11 (v11.0.0.380) and have created a book with several files and a TOC. I am working on a network (I've tried both wired and wireless connections) and have the same problem: When I try to save a file, most of the time I get an error message that FM cannot save the file to the disk. It lists the file name, but adds a 3-character file exension after ".fm" at the end of the file name. Each time I try to save, the file extra file extension changes somewhat randomly. I can do a "save as" and save to my laptop's hard drive (most of the time) and, very occasionally, I can actually save the file to the network drive if I work in another application and come back to FM and *immediately* try to save a file.
I am using Windows Professional with Service Pack 1 on a Dell laptop.

I'm assuming you're using simple files, and not storing the FM files in a CMS.
    > It lists the file name, but adds a 3-character file exension after ".fm" at the end of the file name.
The way Frame save appears to work is:
Create and write docname.fm.tmp, and only when successfully written ...
    Delete docname.backup
    Rename docname.fm to docname.backup
    Rename docname.fm.tmp to docname.fm
This is cautious practice. Consider what might happen if it really re-wrote docname.fm in-place, and failed partway through.
Due to creating the temp file, the only obvious scenario that leads to this result is insufficient free space on the logical drive. That's pretty unlikely.
A less likely scenario is that you have write permissions on the files, but not on the directory, so the create-docname.fm.tmp fails.
So this does not a first glance look like an FM problem. It looks like a network FS problem, usually Windows Server. I blame Bill Gates. Get I.T. involved.

  • Saving Photoshop File as PDF

I hope this isn't a stupid question. I have created a poster and want to save it as a PDF. The file is CMYK format, but when I save it as a pdf and reopen in Photoshop it shows up as RGB--why????

    >and reopen in Photoshop it shows up as RGB--why????
Most likely you are not paying attention when you reopen and you are converting it to RGB.
