Saving from external editor

My wife is using iPhoto 8 on a Lion system and Adobe Elements for editing. The edits in Adobe are no longer being saved directly to her iPhoto library and updating the orginal photo like they used to.
Any idea why? Is there a way to get it working again?

1 - nothing has ever updated the original in iPhoto - iPhoto has from teh begining kept the original intact and unchanged
2 - typically you set PSE (Photoshop elements which I assume you speaking of) as teh external editor and do the edit and in PSE save (not save as) an it goes back to iPhoto as the modified version
Please describe more about your question

  • Back to iphoto from external editor?

I set PhotoShop Elements as my external editor so when I edit a pic in iphoto it opens up in the PhotoShop edit window. How do I save the file so it goes back to iphoto? When I hit save, I'm asked where - so where do I save to iphoto?
    Many thanks, M.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Are you seeing what's in these screenshots?
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Modified versions from external editor are not shown in browser, why?

After I modify an image in Silver Efex and save it , the image is not shown in it's modified form in the browser. When I open the image it shows as modified.

Remember when you return an image from an external editor/plugin the returned image is made into a new master. Are you sure you're looking at the correct image in Aperture?
If that's not it post back describing the exact steps you are taking from sending the image to the plugin until you're back in Aperture.

  • Deleting versions from external editor

I am sure this question has come up before, but I cannot seem to find it in a forum search.
I have my original RAW in Aperture. I use the "Open with external editor" command, make changes in PhotoShop and save. Aperture now has the "original" RAW and the "altered" PS file.
However, now I decide that I don't like the PS edits and want to delete that file. When I select is and choose "delete version" I get a dialog stating that a master will be deleted and there is no undo. If I allow the delete, the PS version and the original RAW are both trashed. I want to keep the RAW and delete the "altered" PS version.
What am I doing wrong and is there any way around this?

Yes, it should only delete the edited version if you have the edited version and only the edited version selected and not as just the main selection with the others in the stack selected. It should also delete any versions made from the edited master, but should leave the original master and it's versions intact.
I just tested this on my system and it did as expected.
Just take a sample image and import it with the sole intention of opening with the external editor and then selecting just the externally edited and deleting it. I know you're sure you had just the edited master selected, but are you sure sure?

  • Pictures not saving from external websites.

Since I updated my iPhone 4s software, ios6. My pictures are not saving from Facebook or alternitive websites. I have tryed to hold on the picture and press save picture and it is not saving to my camera roll, or any albums. I've rebooted twice. It was working prior to the update. Any solutions please?

Yes you can!  Go to Settings --> Privacy --> Photos and toggle on the apps that have asked for access.

  • Returning pics from external editor?

I am using elements 12 as an external editor and cannot seem to get the edited pic back in aperature.
I have seen it work for others but I must be missing a setting>
    Help?

What are your settings for the external editor? You need to point the external editor to the Elements application, not the folder containing the application.
    Point the editor to:
Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements 12>Support Files>Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor
And in Elements use "Save" not "Save as".

  • IPhoto 7.1 Issues with colour from external editor

    Further to my previous post.
When i saved a document edited in Photoshop CS3 to iPhoto 6 the process would be:
File>Save As, which in turn required three dialogue boxes to be checked, the last one being "Replace existing document with the edited version". This option no longer exists.
Any suggestions please as am totally confused.

When I edit a photo with PS CS3 and it remains a jpg file, I only get the window with the option to pick the compression/quality level of iPhoto. But if the edit I make requires a format change to psd then I get window shown below and have to pic one of the two options presented depending on if I want to keep it as a psd file or not.
If it stays a jpg then you will just get the quality level selection window.
    Do you Twango?

  • External Editor in Sun Studio 8 IDE

When I invoke any external editor (Gvim or Xemacs) via File->Open File, a note dialog comes up which says:
Waiting for connection from external editor...... If you want to cancel external editor support and use the built-in editor instead, click Cancel
The external editor never comes up and the dialog box stays there until I click "Cancel".
While this might occur for a number of common reasons, which hopefully I've considered, while trying to troubleshoot, the solution was very strange. When my unix prompt contained a carriage return as in the following:
    "413:sc:/home/server_k55/rbuckwa
    as defined by:
    PS1='!:$Hostname $PWD
    the above described behavior occurred.
However, when the unix prompt did not contain a carriage return as in:
    "sc{413}$"
    defined by:
    PS1="$Hostname{!}$ "
the IDE opened the file and the external editor successfully.
Does anyone have any explanation or experience with this strange behavior. BTW I'm running Solaris 8.
    thanks,
    rick

This sounds like a bug. We probably don't test with a prompt
containing a carriage return. You can file this bug using
http://bugs.sun.com if you like. Look for the "Sun Studio" categories.

  • Saving PS CS3 files when used as an external editor

When I open an image through aperature with PS as the external editor it makes a copy of my image and saves it in my library when Im done in PS which is great, but when I take that same PS edited file, open it back up in PS and attempt to save another PS version of it in the aperature library with the "Save as" command it does not show up in my library anywhere. If I go to the aperature library folder I can find my additional saved PS images in the correct library folder, but they do not show up in aperature.
Does anyone know a way to be able to save additional PS files in the aperature library?
    Thanks!!

Thanks for the help. Only problem still is that if I do it that way and import the edited saved Tif or PSD file back into aperature my PS layers and settings are erased when I try to reopen that PS file with the external editor through aperature. Unlike the original image duplicated in aperature when using PS as the external editor which I can continue to open and reopen from within aperature and be able to access all my saved PS layers, mask, adjustments, etc.
Sorry if this isnt making any sense

  • After editing a RAW photo in PE13 (my External Editor) sent from Apple's iPhoto, I can not reimport the edited photo bank into my iPhoto library. The "Import to Library" command is greyed out. This was not the case before the latest PE13 RAW update versio

After editing a RAW photo in PE13 (my External Editor) originally sent from Apple's iPhoto, I can not reimport the edited photo back into my iPhoto library. The
"Import to Library" command is greyed out. This was not the case until the latest PE13 update (Camera Raw Version 8.7.1.311). What needs to be done
to reimport edited photos back into my iPhoto library? Ideas?

Launch PSE Expert Mode and go to:
Photoshop Elements Editor >> Preferences >> Saving Files (tab)
    Set the drop-down dialog
On First Save : Save Over Current File
    Click OK.
When you have finished editing in PSE use Cmd+S to save (not Save As)

  • Changing External Editor from Photoshop CS to CS5

I've looked through the preferences pane but for the life of me can't figure out how to get iPhoto to switch its external editor from CS to CS5. Does anyone here have any idea? TIA!

In iPhoto's General Preferences use that menu to select CS again. That will let you navigate to the editor of your choice to select it. It's not very intuitive, is it?
This may be preaching to the choir but FWIW:

  • Saving to Aperture after using Photoshop as an External Editor

I'd be grateful for guidance please. I use Aperture but sometimes use the external editor (Photoshop in my case). When I have finished editing in Photoshop what is the best way to get the finished photograph back into Aperture? Do I have to do another import or is there a way to get the saved photo as another version next to the original but including the work I did in Photoshop. If it is possible I would expect this to be a flattened image (ie not preserving Photoshop layers). Thoughts and guidance would be much appreciated.

The following series of events occurs without fail in aperture 3 and CSPS4:
I place a single JPG image on desktop. Then, in aperture, I create a new project named TEST. I then import this single JPG into aperture, making the choice to store the master on the desktop, rather than in the aperture library.
The JPG image now is in aperture in the PROJECT "TEST". I then select this single image in aperture and send it to CSPS4 to edit.
I can see aperture write a new image to the project with the same name as the JPG but the suffix is now TIFF (note two "f" in this suffix). This happens as photoshop is opening and i can briefly see the TIFF file in the aperture browser before photoshop completes opening.
I then edit the "TIFF" image in photoshop (which is by now completely opened) and SAVE (not save as...) it. Since I have previously chosen 16bit TIFF in the preferences I expect to get this file with the photoshop edits in the aperture project TEST. HOWEVER, the file is written with the suffix "TIF". Note that there is only one "f" in this suffix.
Now, on my desktop I have THREE files, a JPG, a TIFF, and a TIF. Aperture shows only 2 images in the TEST project, the original JPG and the TIFF. This TIFF was written by aperture before i edited it in photoshop. Apparently my edits in photoshop are in the file IMAGE.TIF, which is not in my aperture TEST project.
This has to be a bug regarding the suffexes "TIFF" and "TIF" This would explain why my "edited" file in my aperture project TEST shows no evidence of having been edited.
This has been difficult to explain clearly but perhaps someone has noticed.

  • Just upgraded to PS CS5 from CS3 and LR will not recognize CS5 as external editor

I just upgraded from PS CS3 to CS5 then uninstalled CS3.  LR 2.7 is not recognizing PS (CS5) as the default external editor and I don't get the "edit as smart object in PS", "Open as layers in Photoshop", etc… options  when I right-click an image and select "edit in" as they are now greyed out.  I've tried to repair LR and reinstall but nothing makes it recognize PS CS5 as the default external editor.  Any ideas?  Thx in advance.

I ended up reinstalling CS5 and that solved the problem with one exception.  It is now the default external editor and I have the option to export to PS as a smart object - However, I do not have the options to export to PS in layers or export to PS as Photomerge or Export to PS as HDR.  I did have these options with CS3.

  • Am I correct that Photos does not support external editors? i.e., in Aperture, I click Photos Edit with.... and can open in Photoshop or various plug-ins. Changes are then automatically saved back to Aperture. Nonexistent in Photos?

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.

Office for Mac, http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products, can open/edit/create Office documents. If your external drive is formatted NTFS then you can copy the Office documents to your computer and work on them. You won't be able to save the files back to your NTFS formatted drive. But you will be able to save the documents to your internal drive. You can move all the external files to your internal drive then format the external drive for Apple. Then you can copy the files back to your external drive for ongoing use.
