Saving gradient swatches

I have been unable to save a gradient swatch. Is there a way to do this?
Of course I can copy a gradient from one document to another, but not save an individual swatch as a .ase file.
I have read, in a very reliable book on InDesign CS4,that this works but I can't make it happen. The Save Swatches option is grayed out until I add a regular swatch, and if I do this and select Save Swatches, only the non-gradients are saved.
I have tried radial, linear, different angles multiple colors. grayscale etc.
Thanks

John,
I hope it wasn't my book that indicated you could save gradients as ase files.
You can't.
The ase file format doesn't support gradient swatches.
If it was my book, please tell me what page the error is on and I'll fix it in the next version.

  • Gradient swatch

    Hello.
How is it I can make a gradient swatch with a 90º angle (for example) a saved swatch?
Whenever I have saved a gradient swatch it does not allow me to specify (or save) the angle I would like the gradient to run.
So whenever I create a shape and apply a gradient swatch, it defaults to horizontal, never angled or vertical.
    Am I missing something here?
    Cheers, Matt

It isn't much of an issue, really. Once you have the gradient swatch saved, select it and using the gradient tool to "draw" it out in the direction you need it on any partcular selected object.
    Take care, Mike

  • How to edit gradient swatch

I make a gradient and drag it to the swatches palette and name it.
If I want to edit it I select it and make a change in the gradient palette but the instant I touch anything the gradient is no longer selected and my edits can only be saved by creating a new swatch. I will have too many swatches this way.
So how does one edit an existing gradient swatch?
    Thanks for any help.

Yeah. Intuitive, isn't it? If you doubleClick a Grad Swatch, the Edit Swatch dialog opens, which does not provide Gradient sliders.
Edit the grad in the grad palette. Press and hold Alt while you drag it from the grad palette and drop it onto the existing Swatch.

  • Can  not get any color swatches into Gradient Swatch panel.

I've tried dragging, clicking dragging and only get the circle/line-thru-it.  And there is no New Gradient Swatch option anywhere that I can see.
Listen:  I've now spent over 4 hours online -- today alone! -- reading instructions that simply do not work. After 4 years of InDesign work and design changes made because I can't get two colors to simply gradient, its time for this function to work for me.

You have at least two possibilites to add gradients to your swatches:
    1. Select an Object with a gradient applied. (Take care to have the gradient part selcted in the stroke/fill part in the tool panel.) Got to the Swatch Panel and in the menu of the panel select "New Gradient Swatch…"
    or
    2. In the swatch panel menu got to "New gradient Swatch…", edit the color stoppers, add some ore remove some and click on the add or ok button.

  • Can I edit gradient swatches so it affects everywhere its used like normal swatches?

I have a gradient swatch made up of several single color swatches that are sent to global.  If I alter the color to those, it affects everywhere the gradients are used as intended.  Now I want to edit that gradient swatch by adding other colors and sections to it.  When I do this, it doesnt seem to affect anywhere that gradient is used.  Seems i have to create a 2nd gradient swatch instead and reapply it everywhere i had the original gradient swatch applied.  This just doesnt seem right, is there a better way of doing this?

    This just doesnt seem right...
No, it doesn't. Welcome to Illustrator.
Note that Gradient Swatches cannot be set to Global.
Note that each application of a given Gradient Swatch can have its own angle and spread. The angle and spread are not stored in the Swatch, but with each object.
Note that the Swatch Options dialog for a Gradient Swatch does not provide any Gradient editing. It's the same dialog as for ordinary solid Swatches, and everything is grayed out.
So you can use the eyedropper to copy a Grad fill, including its angle/spread, from one object to another. But you can't update a Gradient Swatch by AltDragging the object onto the Swatch, nor by AltDragging the object's Fill from the Appearance Palette onto the Swatch, but only by AltDragging the Swatch from the Color palette (where, by the way, it doesn't even belong; a Gradient is not a color) or from the Gradient palette, but in those cases the angle/spread is not stored.
You can, however, drag an object containing a Gradient into the Graphic Styles palette. Then you can apply that Graphic Style, including its angle/spread to other objects. Then you can edit the Grad stops, angle, or spread of one of those objects and AltDrag that object onto the stored Graphic Style, and other objects with that Style applied will update accordingly.
Doing that, however, stores/updates all of the modified object's Appearances in the Style. So if the modified path also has a Stroke, AltDragging the modified object also causes the Stroke to be added to all other objects with that Style applied.
You can workaround that  by applying the Gradient at a Group level, rather than at the object level, storing that as a Style, and only applying it to other Groups. That requires some careful planning. For example:
Draw three unfilled paths, each with a different Stroke.
Select each one individually and Group it, so you have three Groups, each containing one path.
Select one Group. Apply a Grad Fill to it.
Drag it to the Graphic Styles palette.
Select the other two Groups. Apply the Style.
WhitePointer: Select just the path inside one of the Groups. Give it a thick Stroke. Deselect.
Select the same Group. Gradient palette: alter the Grad.
AltDrag the modified Group and drop it onto the Style. The Grads of the other Groups update, but their (object-level) strokes are not wrecked.
Of course all that requires an awful lot of foresight and pre-planning.
Note that Illustrator is exceedingly confused, scattered, inconsistent, and utterly unintuitive.

  • My saved Kuler swatches will not show up in Illustrator CC.  In the Kuler tab within Illustrator, it says "a valid Adobe ID is required to use this feature" but I AM signed in with an Adobe ID...

How do I get my saved Kuler swatches to show up in Illustrator CC?

No, I am the licensed owner. Had lotta hassles getting it, but finally did, now Kuler Panel is in my illustrator. Thanks for your answer. Also had to download an update to the Creative Cloud application. That was a hassle too.  Beginning to get it now.  Didn't realize that chain link thing on my top menu bar was in fact Creative Cloud.  But something was wrong with it. Better now. Cheers!

  • Saved pattern swatches are not found on New Windows

    Hi guys,
I have created some pattern swatches in Illustrator CS6. But I cannot see the saved pattern swatches every time I open a new window, is this normal?
    Some help, please.
    Thank you.

In order to have them in all your files you need to save them into a custom new document profile.

  • Problem with InDesign color gradient swatches

I've recently upgraded to CS5 and I can't seem to create color gradient swatches in InDesign.  When I go to create a new gradient swatch in the swatches palette, it will only let me do black and white - as you can see in the pic, I can't select the stop color.
I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing, but any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Gradient Swatch Tool does NOT work in CS3

I made a gradient, named it, and filled a rectangle with it. I select the rectangle and fill it with the gradient. However, when I go to the gradient swatch tool, I'm unable to edit or change the gradient. The thing is, I can click on the gradient feather tool and make all kinds of changes to the gradient. HELP!!
I have Windows XP, SP2 and Creative Suite 3 Design Premium. Also, I'm new to Indesign and installed the CS3 software approximately a month ago.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the prompt replay! I guess I didn't explain myself well. I'm taking a class and the book specifies that after I fill my rectangle with the gradient I'm to select the rectangle, click on the gradient swatch tool, then place the mouse pointer on the top edge of the rectangle;click and hold shift, and then drag down to the bottom of the rectangle. When I release the mouse, the gradient is to change directions of the fill. The result should be kind of like going from a horizontal fill to a vertical fill.
When I do it with the gradient swatch tool, nothing happens. BUT if I do it with the gradient feather tool, I don't have a problem with changing the outcome of the gradient. I just can't figure out why I can change the outcome with the feather tool but not with the gradient swatch tool???
    Thanks!

  • [CS3][VBS] Delete Unused Swatches ALSO clears Gradient Swatches!

    Hi Folks!
Heres another weird one. This code deletes unused CMYK swatches properly but also sets the background of some gradient swatches to black.
    myUnusedSwatches = currentdoc.UnusedSwatches.Count
For myLoop = 1 To myUnusedSwatches
    On Error Resume Next
    Set myUnusedSwatches = currentdoc.UnusedSwatches.Item(1)
*** I even through this in as a last ditch solution, but it only works sometimes***
    if instr(lcase(currentdoc.unusedswatches.item(1).name), "gradient") = 0 then
    myUnusedSwatches.Delete
    else myUnusedSwatches.Save
    end if
    Next
    Any ideas?

I think i've gotten to the bottom of this - the designers have been using 'Paper' as a white background for gradients. When a colour swatch with CMYK 0 is used, the script works.
    If TypeName(currentdoc.UnusedSwatches.Item(1)) = "Gradient" Then
Doesn't work, unfortunately, because its not actually deleting the gradient, its setting its background colour to black; the unused swatch its deleting is actually a color swatch.
Since there will be a lot of files here set up this way, can you think of any way to work around this? Why does this not happen when you do the same action in the UI ('select all unsused'> 'Delete')?
    Thanks again Ole!

  • Gradient swatches

Im trying to make my gradient swatch a different color than black. Every time I add a gradient to my color block, instead of making it the color I want with a gradient it automatically makes the block black with a gradient, then when I try to go to my color swatch panel and change the color, it turns it back into a solid.
the purple block is my first block i lay and the black gradient block is what happens to my purple after i add gradient. what do i do?

  • Gradient Swatches Presets

    Hi!
Where do I find gradient swatches presets for Adobe Indesign CS5?
Is there a file with presets of this for free download?
And also can I convert swatches gradient from Photoshop (grd files) to Indesign gradient files?
    Thanks!

There are no swatch "presets" of any sort for InDesign other than the default swatches. You can add swatches with nothing open and the will become part of the default set for all new work. Swatches can be loaded from other InDesing files, so defining a gradient swatch in one document allows you to use it in another.
ID supports the import of .ase swatch sets, but not pattern or gradient swatches contained in them, so as far as I know there is no way to import a gradient from another application.

I am having trouble saving my swatches and brushes that I create. After I close Illustrator, and come back later my swatches and brushes are gone.

Once you have a document with the swatches, brushes, symbols that you want, save it as a new Document Profile.
Document profiles can be found (and saved) in Library > Application Support > Adobe > Adobe Illustrator 18 (if you have CC) > your language folder > New Document Profiles.
Next time you create a document you will find it in the list of profiles.

  • Creating Gradient Swatches

I am trying to create a gradient swatch to fill a rectangle on a brochure but it wont let me select a beginning stop color. Is there a process I am missing? I go to the swatches menu in the top right corner of my document, then select create new gradient swatch, and begin to set parameters for my gradient but it's only in grey-scale and wont let me choose colors. Is this even the best to accomplish this task?

The drop down box nect to Stop-color is greyed-out and wont let me drop down to select the color scale.

  • InDesign CS4 - saved gradient got corrupted, file becames unreadable.

    Hi all.
I've just got the new CS4 suite a couple of days ago.
All is well installed, been working like crazy for almost 2 days straight, over CS2 files that I had before.
Then I started a brand new document (not imported from older versions), designed it, and it crashed after I've applyed a simple gradient to a frame.
After restarting InDesign CS4, it recovered the file, but the frame with the gradient was Black, and a warning appeared saying the file appears to be corrupted.
"Saving as..." with a new name didn't helped either, seems like every file saved from that one were corrupted.
Scanned the hard drive for bad sectors, all is ok.
The only solution I've got was to:
    open the corrupted file
    select what I could
    "copy" to memory
    close the file
create a new document with similar settings
    paste and adjust
start all over again for every page and layer
Can someone help, so this doesn't happen again?
Oh, and it also crashed again after creating some colors. On Windows Task Manager, the executable was still there, "eating" about 49% CPU.
Could this have something to do with multi-core? This machine has a dual-core, but others have quads. This is being run over Windows XP Professional SP3, 3Gb Ram.
I couldn't replicate the error yet.
    Kind regards,
    Bruno Mateus

    Hi Peter,
Thanks for the response. I think you nailed it. I had actually updated all the cross references that generated errors, but a few crept through (no errors generated) that referenced a paragraph in the document I copied from. I replaced these with the references in the current document and this solved it. The old document was also on a remote disk, so I'm sure this made matters worse. In addition, I found links to illustrator files on the remote disk. I also copied these files to the local disk and updated all the links (actually I did this first and it made very little difference, it was really the cross references that were the issue).
    Thanks,
    Anthony
