Saving Guest account system preferences.

I recently moved over from Windows and am loving OSX so far. However there are a few simple things that are driving me crazy.
I have a Guest account setup on my MAC so that my parents can use the computer when they come over in order to get online and check some Web site and such.
I use a Razer mouse for games and the default mouse tracking speed setting is way too fast to be usable with that mouse and needs to be lowered a few notches.
From what I can tell, there is no way to change the default mouse tracking speed (even as Administrator) on Guest account access and I would need to give the Guest account access to System Preferences (which I definitely do NOT want to do) and have the guest change the setting each time.
Is there really no way to do this? I seems like something that should just be common sense and I cant believe that the option doesnt exist.
Am I missing something or is there really no way to do this ...

Can't say I know the answer to your questions but you might have some luck in the details section of preferences in workgroup manager. I think the mouse settings can be found in .GlobalPreferences (spotlight it) and network settings in com.apple.nat.plist you can then add this into your list of settings to always control in workgroup manager
Sorry for the lack of detail but hope this helps

  • User account seen in finder, but not in Accounts System Preferences!

I just had a weird crash using Quicktime. When my Mac rebooted, it booted into a brand new user account (empty docs folder, clean desktop, etc.), but under the same name as my previous main user account.
The old main user account folder can be seen in the Users folder, but not in the Accounts System Preferences.
How do I get back to my previous main user account?

This has happened to a few, not always their doing either...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854
    ChangeShortName 10.4 only...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16620
But may I suggest first of all doing these steps...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Can't unlock padlock in User Accounts System Preferences

I'm having all sorts of problems and suffering from sleep deprivation due to the fact that after some problems with the Rohos USB KeyLogin SW, lost password, reset using apple ID and change some things from single user mode per the Rohos website (http://www.rohos.com/products/rohos-logon-key-for-mac/troubleshooting/) and now I can't open the padlocks to change permissions, create accounts, etc.  (I also puttied around with MacPilot).  Had to create new keychain and many applications are responding with errors like: "failed to obtain the necessary authorization" or "failed to get permission."   I'm tech savvy, but a mere imbecile compared to many of you when it comes to Mac issues.  I could really use some help here (and my wife would likely give you money or other things of value to get me away from this god-forsaken machine), and seriously, I'm going crazy as I've had this MBP 17" for nearly a year  (and a late-2008 MB UniBody before that with very few issues) with no problems until now.....Your help would be more than greatly appreciated!  Here are some interesting log files:

    HELP!!!!!

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with a mirroring tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Preferably both.
Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume with the default options. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For details of how this works, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Transfer only "Users" and "Settings" – not "Applications" or "Other files." Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system. Test. If the problem is still there, you have a hardware fault. Take the machine to an Apple Store for diagnosis.
If the problem is resolved, reinstall your third-party software cautiously. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • Unable to open accounts system preference and share to windows accounts.

I have one intel iMac running 10.4.11 with AD integration. Everything works well except when I try to open the accounts preferences. I get a blank screen that allows me to go back to system preferences. All of the other system preferences seem to work. I have just recently reformatted the machine and do not want to do that again to the user.
Any help in this would be very appreciated.

    Get Pacifist...

then extract what you need from your Install Disk & Install it, search for accounts.
Or, If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

  • Accounts System Preference Blank

Problem surfaced while trying to install Retrospect Client on G4 Graphite Dual 450 running OS X (10.3.9). Retrospect itself, running on Dual 2.6 G5 (OS X - 10-4-8) can see the new client and tries to add it via TCP/IP, but requires password.
These are work machines and the users can never remember their passwords, so there are none, but Retrospect doesn't enable connection without a password. So, I go to the System Preferences - Accounts, and the window opens completely blank - no accounts, nothing.
The G4 is started in its Admin account.
I tried restarting from a system DVD and repairing permissions, but this does not seem to solve the problem. Is there a preference file I can throw away, or anything else that can be done to re-enable the Accounts Panel?

    macrobat,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Quit System Preferences, find the com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist file which is located in the Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Preferences Folder, drag it to the Desktop, log out/in or restart and check for functionality of the Accounts preference.
If that is not successful, Quit System Preferences (if it's running) and trash the following file: Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
Then launch System Preferences again and check for functionality.

  • Sent items not saved -- delete accounts/settings/preferences

I have mail accounts with AOL and Mobile Me. I understand that to save sent items on the server, I must use the setting "Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For."
For both AOL and Mobile Me accounts, I successfully set up the sent items folders. Under the paper airplane icon, both are reporting "Contents stored on server. Namer on server: Sent."
However, only the Mobile Me account is functioning properly. If I uncheck the mail preference "store sent messages on the server" for my AOL acconts, then Mail will store sent items locally in Mail.app, but this is not what i want.
It is possible this is a problem with AOL. I have two AOL accounts, and they behave a little differently, so I think I have an issue with my settings or preferences. I'd like to know how to completely remove all mail accounts/setting/preferences from Mail.app. All my accounts are IMAP accounts, so I don't need to save anything that is stored locally.
I thought I had removed all accounts/settings/preferences related to mail.app, but when I go to add an account, my AOL account info is already populated in the first screen, so I don't think I deleted everything.
Thanks for any help with deleting preferences/settings related to mail.app.

  • Can't activate Guest Account: System freeze

New Mac Mini 2009, Apps, user and settings imported from a G4 Cube running Leopard perfectly. When I go to System Prefs - Accounts - Guest and I mark the checkbox "Allow Guests connect to this computer" System Prefs freezes with rainbow pizza. Then, no matter if I kill the application or not, the system is KO. If I launch new apps from the dock, they bounce a four five times and then stop but the applications don't launch. Not even I can restart. When the applications closes the system starts a loop of spinning clock wheel - blue screen - clock wheel - blue screen forever.
This is the second new Mac that has the same exact problem after importing all my data, and it's 100% reproducible. I returned the first one to Apple cause I thought it was a hardware failure. What can I do? Naturally I have done the usual permissions and disk repairs...

  • Creating Guest Account Crashes System Preferences

I recently replaced an old mac mini G4 with the newest low end mac mini, the 1.83ghz core 2 duo with combo drive model.
I restored everything to the new machine with my time machine backup. Unfortunately, the guest account didn't get restored, and when I try to enable the guest account, System preferences crashes, so in order to do anything I have to force quit system prefs. After force quitting system prefs, I am unable to open applications using the dock. I have to reboot the computer in order to get anything to work again, but somehow enabling the guest account just wont work, and always crashes.
What can I do to fix this?

It happened to me also, on my imac and my MacBook Air.
It seems that user account migration somehow confuses the "guest user" machinery, which totally trashes securityd which dies of sudden death and from then on nothing works on the computer.
The solution is to do the following in System Preferences:
    0. Your system guest account must be disabled (it already is if you have the described symptoms).
    1. Create new standard account with name "guest" and short name "guest".
IMPORTANT: short name must be "guest" - OS will suggest "guest1", but you must edit that into "guest".
    2. Enable system guest account in System Preferences (check the "Allow guests to log into this computer" switch). It will work now that "guest" name is taken.
This action will create user account with short name "guest1" with all the properties of guest (clean-up after logout etc.).
    3. Completely delete standard user "guest", which you created in step 1 (check "delete all data and folder now").
    4. Disable system guest account (uncheck the switch).
    5. Right-click on system guest account icon and choose "Advanced" or whatever (there is only one menu item anyway) and change short name from "guest1" to "guest".
    6. Enable system guest account.
Voila. You now have working guest account (well, I have it, and hopefully you will, too)...
P.S. I am not sure whether you need to log-in/out/restart between steps. I remember I did some of that dance, but probably it is not necessary...

  • System preference -- accounts

I go to system preferences and click on accounts (I want to change the applications that launch automatically at start-up).
But accounts never opens. The system hangs and, in a minute or so, system preferences crashes. There's a message that says it "quit unexpectedly."
I've restarted; I've repaired permissions; I've logged out and logged in "safe boot" mode.
    What's going on? Suggestions, please?
    Robert, Jacksonville, Fla.
    MacBook Pro,
    OSX 10.6.7

Just had this happen to me today...
Trying to launch the Accounts system preference pane produces the same error in the Console log (as Robert Blade listed):
    NSConcreteMutableAttributedString initWithString:: nil value
Apparently, I had three guest accounts:
    Guest
    Guest1
    Guest2
The first one is fine, but 2 and 3 should not be there and not sure how they were created - possibly related to what Cralos mentioned, since I recently done something simliar.
To determine if this is your issue, you can check your accounts by entering this in Terminal:
    dscl . -list /Users
To remove the additional guest accounts, this is what I had to do in Terminal:
    sudo dscl . -delete /Users/Guest1
    sudo dscl . -delete /Users/Guest2
If the above doesn't work, you could also try:
    sudo dscl localhost -delete /Local/Default/Users/Guest1
    sudo dscl localhost -delete /Local/Default/Users/Guest2
After deleting the additional guest accounts, I was able to successfully get into the Accounts system preference pane.

  • Mouse System Preferences not saved

I´m using a MacMini with the latest updtes and only apple harware, suddenly the mouse stoped puping up the dashboard, when I go to system preferences the scroll botton is not asigned to the dashboard, a click on it and then it works fine as long as i do not close system preferences, if I do close them then it stops working and if I reopen system preferences the button is again not asigned to the dashborad, the fact is that the preferences I define for the mouse regardless of the funcion i asign to them are not saved after closing system preferences.
    Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you might have a series of corrupt preference (.plist) files, or else more problems.
    likely a corrupt
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist  and a  com.apple.dockpreferences.plist files in your User/Library folder
However it might not be just that alone
Run through this list of repairs in the order given (1-16)

If you can't isolate the and solve problem by #16, then do #17 after backing up your data

  • System Preferences Crash/iMac won't update

Noob here, so I apologize in advance for any protocol violations. I haven't been able to update any software on my iMac since 10/10/08. The list of software updates is present and current, with all downloads completed, and the "Install 5 Items" button present. Once that button is clicked, it goes gray, appearing to start the install, then immediately goes back to blue, ready to be clicked again. This goes in loop until I cancel the update.
I then went into System Preferences, curious if a permissions issue existed, however, whenever I try to open Accounts, System Preferences errors out and closes, giving me the option to Ignore, Report, or Relaunch. This also occurs on a variety of different System Preferences objects (Date & Time, Time Machine, Parental Control).
I have searched extensively online for any hint of help, but this seems to be a unique problem (or I have real poor skills on the Google).
Thanks in advance for ANY help,
    Nate

The most common cause of this type of behavior is a corrupted preference file. Try trashing the following files located in your home/library/preferences folder
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    and
    com.apple.finder.plist
just drag both files into the trash and then empty the trash
Then restart your computer. A new finder preference file will be created automatically upon restart. As soon as you open system preferences a new preference file for it will be created.
You will have to reset some of your finder preferences and a few other preferences after doing this but it should solve the problem. However, there are no guarantees.

  • Strange behavior with System Preferences involving Guest Account

I work for a company that primarily uses macs and I have recently been asked to enable the Guest Account on all of them (as well as a general staff login). In doing this, I have come across at least one computer (they all run 10.5.5 or 10.5.6) where it seems impossible to enable the Guest Account. Here is what happens:
    1. I open System Preferences, go to the Accounts pane, authenticate, and click on the Guest Account.
    2. I check the option to "Allow guests to log into this computer" and a little busy sign shows for a second.
    3. I click on another account in the list on the left.
    4. When I click back to the Guest Account, the checkbox is unchecked. Also, the Guest Account does not appear in the fast user switch menu.
After tinkering around a little bit, I found that there was a "Guest" home folder in the Users folder. I thought that this was strange because I thought that this folder is created when you actually log into the guest account (I checked on another computer and found that this was indeed the case). I then deleted this "Guest" home folder and emptied the trash.
I again went through the same steps I did above (with a Finder window on the Users folder displayed) and found that when I check the box to enable the Guest Account, a "Guest" home folder appears in the Users folder. I deleted and repeated this process a number of times, all with the same result. I then began looking around for other occurrences of this problem.
At some point, I came across this discussion, which seemed to pose a possible solution: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9176908#9176908
As suggested in that thread, I tried creating a standard user with a home folder by the name of "Guest" or "guest". I filled in all the fields but when I clicked on "Create Account", it seems to work and then goes back to the Accounts preference pane except that the account I just created +*is not there!*+ I then tried this while the "Guest" home folder existed in the Users folder and it brings up a window asking whether I want to use the current "Guest" home folder as the home folder for the new account. Even if I click OK, +*the account still does not appear.*+
Does anyone know what is going on here? The next thing I'll try is an archive and reinstall, but a quicker fix would be nice, since the former involves running all the updates again (we don't have current versions of the Leopard install disks).
I would be very grateful if anyone has an answer.
    -Nik

As it turns out, the Guest folder behavior is actually normal, but I still have not figured out why the guest account still doesn't work. My next step will be to try a disk repair. I've repaired the permissions, but that didn't seem to help as far as I know. I'll also try reinstalling the combo updater to 10.5.6 (as suggested by a co-worker) and see if that does anything. Last resort is the archive and reinstall.

  • After upgrading to Lion, and then running fire vault I've lost my guest account from log-in and can't edit it in system preferences!

    I upgraded successfully to Lion.
I then decrypted the legacy filevault and started the new firevault.
After this completed I noticed that I no longer have a guest account at log-in.
And I am unable to edit the guest account at system preferences even though I am admin.
(The guest account is unticked in system preferences - allow users to login).
    Thanks.

Same here. Looks file FileVault2 disables the possibility to use a Guest Account as it enforces all accounts to have a password. In addition Auto Login is no longer possible. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4790 for details.

  • I can't access Accounts under System Preferences.

This morning I decided to do some clean-up and delete extra user accounts. Big mistake.
I somehow caused a problem when I deleted a user account and saved the account info as a dmg file. Before that I deleted another account without backing it up and everything was fine. It was the act of making a back-up file that caused the issue. Now when I try to go to System Preferences, Accounts, it stays loading and then crashes. I get the following error message: "System Preferences quit unexpectedly." All other parts of System Preferences work fine, just not Accounts.
I called Apple support and the guy I spoke to said my only option is to re-image the hard drive. That seems like a pretty extreme measure to a simple problem. DO I have any other options?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

Just kidding. It's because I had an extra Guest account. Tried this and it worked:

  • ICloud mail settings not saved in System Preferences on Mountain Lion

I note that iCloud mail settings not saved in System Preferences on Mountain Lion even if I tick mail in Icloud then close system preferences then open system preferences and it is untiked again?
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Cheers
    Paul

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
