Saving HD Project Back to Tape

I purchased a Canon HV20 a few weeks back and have had no troubles importing the videos to my iMac. Initially I wanted to keep all of the vids on the computer but when I saw that a 23 minute video is taking up 17 GB I decided saving to the hard drive was a baaaaaaaddd idea.
So now I'm editing my vids and trying to save them back to tape, however it's telling me that the video needs to be re-encoded first. Not only that but it's taking ridiculously long to re-encode (and I'm on a Dual Core Intel). I've read on the support pages that this is normal for HDV footage, but why?
Am I also going to lose quality with this re-encoding? The question was asked before but wasn't fully answered. If I'm going to lose quality with the re-encode when saving back to tape then I'm not going to use iMovie HD at all...

There are lossy and lossless compression schemes. Lossless compressions don't compress all that much, but you are assured that you never loose any quality during editing or conversions. Lossy algorithms loose a little bit of quality every time you have to re-encode. Sort of like a copy machine: if you just make a single copy, it looks almost as good as the original. But if you take the copy and make another copy, and repeat that process, it gets a little worse every time. Most video compression algorithms in use are lossy.
Mini-DV based HD camcorders record in MPEG-2. MPEG-2 is a little challenging to edit directly, so most video editing applications first convert it into a format that is better suited for editing. That format needs a lot more space. Your 23 minute clip is probably about 5 GB in MPEG-2 format on the tape, but 17 GB after decoding for editing. To save it back to tape, it has to be converted back to MPEG-2 format. MPEG-2 encoding is a pretty slow process. And yes, you will loose some quality along the way.

Maintain DV widescreen format when copying iMovie project back to tape

Using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and copying a project back to tape via the camcorder, but the 16:9 widescreen format gets squeezed into 4:3 ratio. Not sure if this is fixable. In the Preferences, I turned off the auto pillarboxing under Import, but did nothing as I suspected. In Playback checking Play DV project video through to DV camera also yielded no change.

Problem saving im project to dv tape

I need more help on this one that I posted earlier. I am saving an imovie project back to dv tape. When I go thru the share menu, the camcorder records the tape sporadically making the sound and video unmatched. I have deleted the imovie plists, downloaded OnyX and cleaned the caches, ran the disk utility clean up preferences. I have tested the procedure on other projects and it works. I do have a lot of 3rd party filters added to the project (chromakey effects). When its shares back to tape, it resembles what happens when you open an internet site and the movie jerks as it tries to load. I'm using a simple jvc mini dv camcorder and its worked before. Anyone have any suggestions?

It worked. Thanks again. I now have a good tape copy and a dv Quicktime file back up on my external harddrive. I deleted the original im project and the new one I created. Saves a lot of space. thanks again

How to transfer edited FCP project back to miniDV tape

Hi to all. I'm trying this for the 1st time, and it didn't work. I have a feeling I'm missin some connection between my Sony GV-D1000 miniDV deck and the G5 computer.
I'm trying to get back to tape my edited version (non-compressed).
From FCP I went to File - Print to Video. The software recognized the deck and it seemed to be recording, but when rewound the tape and played it back, nothing was there.
Any assistance of course is highly valued and appreciated. Currently, I'm connected to the computer via a firewire cable (to the back of the deck with a DV connection.

Make sure you can SEE it on the Deck first.

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

How do I get my project back? I closed it in the File window.

I closed my project in the file window, and I accidently saved and closed premire pro. When I opened it again, all my video clips and other stuff was there, but none of my edited work. How do I get it back?

Sequence will still be in the Project Window.
You just saved a Project with the sequence closed.

I would be very grateful of any help. I am trying to copy a movie back to tape however when i do so it results in the recording on the tape being completly black. it has gone through the process but just left a black screen.

... and it did work before...? not all European camcorders allow a DV-IN...

finally: iM handle both video standards, even allows to import PAL footage into a NTSC project.. but cameras are 'hardwired' to one standard.. make sure, your project has same standard as camera.. (besides: Apple lingo is a little 'cryptical': '25 frames per second' = PAL, '30fps' = NTSC)
it could have happen, that you incidently created a NTSC project with your PAL footage. and now, it is impossible to playout THAT into/onto (english??) tape ...

Error occured while Saving The Project

I have a project that is giving me a 'unknown error occurred while saving the project. Select 'Save As' from the file menu and save the project to a new location'.
It would seem that maybe it's saying that it's out of room but I'm saving on a harddisk that has over 1T of space left. I tried to do as they said and create another folder and save in a new location but it gives me the same error.
Has anyone dealt with this.? I have a wedding project that I can't make any changes to. It was doing this before and after I updated to Adobe 4.2.

Going back some time, another user (do not recall Matrox on the system) had a similar issue. The workaround in that case was to use Save_As and just increment the file name. Now, I do not recall any real "fix," and for another user, the Save_As resulted in the same behavior, so it was not a universal workaround.

Print back to tape FCP & Z1...how?

I need to print back to tape from my edited footage using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 and my Sony Z1...cant work out how to do it can anyone tell me there workflow to do this?
Should the camera be in VCR mode??? and how do you record?

I recently tried this (with Sony Z1) and it wouldn't work - until I trashed my preferences:
FCP gets it’s knickers in a twist from time to time and if you trash your preferences it will often sort things out (with no harm done to your project etc etc) . . .
Download FCP Rescue :

Once it’s downloaded, hit Backup first, then hit Trash. If the Trash does no good, hit Restore and everything's as it was. (Easy-Peasy)

No audio on saved motion project

I'm sure I will be embarassed by the answer... it will be so painfully simple.
I have created a motion project, checked to make sure that all of the audio is connected and playing.
When I saved then imported back to fcp, there is NO audio.
I found that I could save the project as a quicktime movie and the audio is there.
Something needs to be checked or unchecked....no doubt.

U guys saved my butt. Here is the short version of what happened. When I previously worked on this project (DNA of relationships) I had exported the clips from FCP into motion and then back to FCP.
When I wanted to edit the clips, I went to the saved clips in motion, edited and then tried to import into fcp, and of course, NO AUDIO.
BTW, I did a no audio from exported clips in motion search on the board and in help, no avail.

Why does SAVING a project cause a delay/freeze in Premiere Pro CC?

EASY steps to re-create the issue:
1) Enable GPU Accleration in your Project Settings.
2) Create TWO sequences and add a bunch of clips to your timeline in EACH sequence.
3) Apply an effect like "Warp Stabilizer" to all those clips (or, if you have like 30 short clips add it to say half of them) on each of the two sequences.
4) Wait for the effect to finish working/stabilizing and you'll notice the render bar where the effect was added gradually turns from RED back to YELLOW for smooth playback.
5) You can now toggle back and forth between the two sequences easily and play, edit, etc. All is well at this point...
6) BUT!!!!...once you save the project (or if the project AUTO-SAVES) then now when you toggle back to the other sequence the render bar has returned to RED and you have to WAIT for it to turn YELLOW again which sometimes can take anywhere from a several seconds to 1/2 a minute or even more (depending on how many effects (warp stabilizers in my case) you've added). During this delay, you cannot work or even play the video on BOTH timelines. Once it switches back to YELLOW you can work like normal...until it's saved again.
NOTE#1: If you toggle OFF GPU Acceleration for the project and set it to "Software ONLY" then this issue/delay does NOT occur.
NOTE #2: Another pain is that to save the project above takes upwards of 45 seconds!!!! When I turn off GPU Accleration, saving takes only up to a few seconds. Imagine have to stop work and wait 45 seconds every time your project auto-saves!
This delay above is a real pain when I have multiple sequences with effects and after every time I save the project (or after it's auto-saved) I have to initially sit and wait 30 seconds or more sometimes when I go between sequences.
Why does simply saving a project trigger this issue/delay?
Is this a bug that I should report?
I've tested this on 2 different Mac computers (2011 iMac w/ AMD6970M (1GB VRAM) GPU as well as the supported 2012 Macbook Pro with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650M GPU w/ 1GB VRAM) with the same results.

Premiere pro 5.5 stops working when playing a sequence, saving a project or closing,any ideas why?

I can open a project, import files or other projects, but when I want to play the sequence the program stops working and closes. When I try to save the project or close the program I get a "software not responding" message.
I hope someone can help me with this as I cannot work on any projects.

thanks for taking the time to help me. I have updated the software and rendered the files and now I am able to play them, but still neither the sequence nor the clip play/show on the corresponding screens, I can only hear the audio file. I also continue having problems when saving the project, the software stops working and I get the "non responding" error from microsoft.
As you suggested, and I have to say I am pretty much a dummy with the codecs and alike, I installed the mediainfo and run one of the files.
This is the info that appears on the screen
I am not getting any error messages from Premiere, so I am kind of stock. If you need other info let me know.

Flash Pro CC saved fla project - "Could not load scene into memory. Your document may be damaged."

Hi all, I've been working on a project in Flash Professional CC in windows 7 that was started in a previous version of Flash Pro and occasionally after I've saved the project and tried to open it the next day I get the "Could not load scene into memory. Your document may be damaged." message and only a blank Scene 2 in the project. I've previously been reverting back to the old saved project file and starting over. Its wasted a lot of time so far.
I can still open the same exact project in CS6 on another older computer but not in CC. I can also save the fla in CS6, transfer it to the other computer and then it will work again (for now). This isn't going to be an option in the future as CS6 was a trial version that is on its last use today.
I've tried to create a new flash pro cc project and just copied and pasted the library and scene layout from the old project into the new project. This worked for a couple of saves/ opens but the error has happened again. I'm scared that now that I've reached the point in the project were my work in the animation/ visual side will start to be more intensive that I will continuosly have to worry about losing all of my work. I'm using a document class so the AS3 code hasn't been an issue thankfully. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply Amy, that is essentially what I am doing already only I'm not using version control software I'm just managing it on my own since its a solo project, though I have been considerring using git anyway. It still doesn't explain why I can open and save the supposedly damaged project (according to CC) in CS6 and only then will it work again in CC. Also I'm not gettting a chance to save as a new version over and over for long. Its only a couple of days max, usually just over one day, and I've primarily been working on the code in Flash Builder with little functional change in the actual fla project. Its primarily changing movieclips instance names, which in this project is tedious and time consuming. Having to revert back to the older working version is exaclty what I'm trying to avoid. I shouldn't have to commit the project to a repository every little change that I make to the fla file.

Is there a way to export an HDV project out to tape (FX1) after Export?

I know I can import HDV footage from the FX1 into FCP5, perform edits and then "Print to Tape" (FX1), but is there a particular format I need to export to, to be able to created a file for import into a new Project for "Print to Tape"?
In other words how do I export an edited HDV File back to tape frm within FCP5?

I import footage from 2 diff tapes (Cam Angles) of a Cooking show taping.
I edited the clips together and added titling
I then exported the Project out (Current Settings) to a single file
I open that file in After Effects to add Motion Graphics
I export that back out in the HDV format
Now I want to export that file to tape by importing into FCP5 HDV project and doing a "Print to Tape" command. But when I do this I get serious frame drop outs.
I hope that made my situation a little clearer.

Problems recording back to tape from FCE

I can't figure this out. For some reason when I go to record my video back to tape, either throught print to video or directly recording off the timeline, the video breaks up, gets digitized, and sometimes the sound freezes.
My set up is a 15" iMac running FCE HD 3.0 with two daisy-chained external hard drives (one for video and one for music). I have a firewire connection to a Panasonic gs-500.
Everything is rendered, the audio is mixed down and I have even tried shutting everything down and then restarting fresh with camcorder on and plugged in.
Any ideas?

With my iMac G4 1 Go ram, I had this kind of problem, ruining my print to video operation.
So, I develop a simple"protocol" to avoid this:
Do a cold start of your mac, turn on your camcorder,plug it. Start FCE, open just one project, and just the sequence to be exported, select all clips in timeline, render it, do an audio mixdown and... (here's the magic) scroll the playhead from beginning to the end of the sequence, with some playing .(it's seem that this process load the cache memory, at least in my own experience)
This procedure always works for me...
If there is a song bought on iTune Music Store, you can't use this track.
Try a test version with just one minute of movie. (set in and out point in timeline and do the print to tape operation).
Does your hard drives are fragmented or full at more than 80% level?
As said earlier, Firewire ports on G4 iMac are connected together and the handling of two HDs plus a camcorder may drive you into problems.
Try a new project with just one drive, or simply the internal one.
