Printing from LinuxMint-17 to HP7525 cuts-off top and bottom of pages, enforced 15mm margins
I am printing a page from my bank (Fidelity), but there is an enforced margin of 15mm at the top and the bottom of the printed page.
This cuts-off most of the form name at the top of the page and the most of the barcode at the bottom of the page.
I find I have to "take screenshot" and import into "gimp". Then crop the page and then print directly from "gimp" to print the entire form. I have tried to teach this to my wife, to no avail. I wish HP would fix the drivers to allow Linux to print inside the margins. There is no problem printing from Windoz XP, but that is using an old hard drive and the computer runs dog slow and is ready to die.
Again, HP please update the linux drivers so my brand new printer will work as it is supposed to.Hi @Jimec ,
I have brought your issue to the appropriate team within HP. They will need to get information from you to look up your case details or serial number. Please look for a private message.

If I save an Illustrator file as PDF, isn't it still vector?
I was asked to send a logo to someone who wanted to wanted to forward it to someone else to use (possibly a printer or maybe even a newspaper or magazin)e, so I sent it to them in PDF format.
The person I sent it to just emailed me and asked me to provide it as vector.
So I sent the original Illustrator version as well as an EPS version.
Still, I thought this was odd. When I worked at a newspaper, we worked with PDF files that clients provided with no problem. The policy there was to open them in Acrobat Pro and re-save as TIFF. But I also often open them in Illustrator to make changes and it has never been a problem. When I open with Illustrator, they are indeed vectors.
Maybe they don't have Acrobat Pro or Illustrator, but even then, can't most DTP programs place PDF files now?
Sorry if these are stupid questions.When sending a logo after completion to a client, I give a wide range of files for the exact reasons you mentioned. I have no idea what programs they have, or will have in the future. giving them a "package" allows them to have a great set to send to all areas of their company without having to come back and requesting more files.
I found great articles as reference in case you are interested:
http://designinstruct.com/print-design/create-a-logo-design-from-start-to-finish/
http://www.thedesigncubicle.com/2009/01/what-should-you-get-from-your-logo-designer/
http://99designs.com/designer-blog/2011/05/18/file-types-logo-design/
They advise:
1 x original Illustrator file (.AI) – Containing flat colour, graded and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
3 x Illustrator 8 EPS files – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
3 x PDF files – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
3 x High resolution JPEG images – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Export…)
The following files are often used when saving print designs:
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format developed by Adobe Systems that can be universally downloaded and viewed by any computer that has the Adobe Acrobat plug-in. Today, PDFs are widely favored by most designers — it can be saved as an editable file which is great for clients.
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript file) is a vector format of your logo. It can be re-sized without losing image quality. Due to it’s high quality, it is commonly used with print elements such as business cards or brochures. If you ever question when to use it, ask yourself, “Will this be used for a high quality print?”
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is widely supported and works in almost any program. It produces a higher quality image than a JPG or PNG, but is not a vector format like EPS. It is widely used among publishing industries and photographers. It is best used in common things like invoices, page layouts or letterheads.
I hope that helps, Please post back with any other questions

Adobe bridge crashes when saving illustrator files
Hi there,
We are developing custom connector using Adobe Drive SDK for our DAM system, the integration with CS was working fine, we recently updated Adobe Drive to 4.2, and we are encountering bridge crashes when saving illustrator file. It didn't happen with older version(4.0.2) of Adobe Drive, not sure why. I pin point the part that causing the issue: in our custom connector, we have READ_XMP_METADATA capability which we need to display the thumbnails and previews, and in the ftp sample connector, this capablity is not included originally, so the issue does not happen, but if I add this capabilty, the crash issue happens as well. If we exclude this capablity from our connector, this crash issue doesn't happen.
We noticed this only happens when saving illustrator file, not photoshop or indesign, and it seems that only in illustrator, when save, and the bridge has the current file folder showing, we are seeing there are twice folder refreshes, and usually it will crash after the second time. In photoshop and indesign, we don't see folder refreshes. If switch to other folder, the crash won't happen. We tested on both windows and Mac, on Mac, this seems happen less often. Another thing we noticed is in debug mode, or we have many debug logging turned on, the crash happens less often, if it is deployed with no debug logging, the crash happens almost everytime. So we are guessing it might be some synchronization problem.
Could you please advice what's the cause of this issue?
Thanks,
KatherineHas it ever worked?
What kind of files are they and where do you save them?
Is a printer connected, set up and turned ON?
Have you already tried resetting the preferences?
Generally it's not a good idea to just save old files, because then some artwork may be automatically flattened. Illustrator will save the file to the old version file-format and if you used new features in-between, those cannot stay live in the old version file format. -
Content of illustrator file is different when opening in and old cs version.
Hi all!
I have a very awful and urgent problem in my job right now, i design some advertisings that goes regularly from month to month, so some advertisings are just like the last month used but with some data changed.
My problem:
I have an illustrator file (.ai) saved and created in CS3 with pdf compability, outlines, and files linked and included on the same cd,
but when opening the same .ai file in another machine but with CS2 (the client's PC).. it shows a very old version of the file with ALL linked files embebbed (and those are different that are on the cd!!)., in the CS3 file i saved and recorded on cd i replaced all things of course and re-save it. I don't know what is wrong, but when i open it in another machine (i.e. a Mac) it shows the correct version of advertising. But not with the client's machine...
In my illustrator file, there is only text outlines and 2 psd. Each PSD have only 1 layer, 'cause they were flattened (thet are actually letters scanned).
So basically: My .ai file, created in CS3 in a Mac, seems totally different and embebbed when opening in CS2 in a PC.
I hope someone can help me with this urgent matter Thanks a lot everyone!!In regards to the illustrator file link not matching, there is nothing wrong with the .ai file., your problem is with the filenames on the linked images. Your linked images have the SAME EXACT FILENAME AS THE OLD ones connected to the clients machine. You need to break the link to the old bad files and re-establish them to your good files.
Use links palete Flyout menu >> link information to find the location of the images. Change the name of an enclosing folder, or some other method to break the link to old images. Relink to new images, by placing them next to the .ai file in the same folder, and open the .ai file. -
Preview pdf shows different borders/ top and bottom
in iphoto, made a book, the preview pdf is not matching the book created, in a way that some top and bottom borders are NOT bleeding off the page, however in the iphoto book layout the entire photo is bleeding off the page. any ideas on pdf? I'm wondering if the pdf is showing the trim and bleed crops.
Hi,
Thanks for the advice. Here's the latest with my 'black borders top and bottom in iMovies' problem:
I found out that if I converted the .VOB files into .DV files (using MPEG Streamclip) instead of converting them to Quicktime files, then when I import these .DV files into iMovies the black borders are no longer there. So it seems like the problem was something to do with Quicktime files in iMovies.
But then there was another problem:
After waiting quite a while for MPEG Streamclip to finish it's work of converting the .VOB files into .DV files, and then waiting a bit longer to import the .DV files into iMovies, I was ready to work on editing the clips. But whenever I added either a fade in or fade out to a clip, I saw that during the time of the fade in or out, the picture was all distorted with thin vertical lines running through the entire picture.
So I had to do more trouble shooting:
I went back to MPEG Streamclip to have a little play around in there. When I made the .DV files before I used the compressor setting DVC Pro 50, so I changed this to the DVC Pro 25. I made a short .DV clip using this compressor and tried it out in iMovies and there was no problem with the vertical line distortion. Just to make sure I made another small .DV clip using DVC Pro 50 as before, imported that into iMovies and again, during the fade in/out effects this distortion came back again. So it seems like I sorted that problem out too.

Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas
I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
Please help.
Thank you very muchJohn,
I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
Thank you John and Monika for your help.
why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas
created by John Mensinger in Illustrator - View the full discussion
I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
but i seem to be lost.
It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.

Get rid of the white space at the top and bottom of the report when Printing as PDF document
Hello All,
I have a wider tablix report which is 29 inches wide. I have given the paper size as custom and width as 29 and height as 11 in report properties.I have deployed it and saved it as PDF document. When I print preview the report I am using the paper size as
tabloid (17 by 11) and selected the orientation as Landscape. I am getting the full report without any stripping but I am getting some extra space at the top and bottom when I print the report. Can anyone help me how to get rid of this space? . I checked the
margins for the report and it was 0in. Please help.
Thank YouHi There
In Reporting Services (SSRS 2008), there are white spaces preserved in the report body by default. When the white space extends the body size beyond the width of the report, blank pages will be generated. To avoid the issue, you can set the “ConsumeContainerWhiteSpace”
property of the report to “True”.
Please try to adjust your margins (top + side) and hopefully this problem will get resolved
Body Width <= Page Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin)
Horizontal usable area:
X = Page.Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin + Column Spacing)
Vertical usable area:
Y = Page.Height - (Top Margin + Bottom Margin + Header Height + Footer Height)
Body Width <= Page Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin)
Horizontal usable area:
X = Page.Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin + Column Spacing)
Vertical usable area:
Y = Page.Height - (Top Margin + Bottom Margin + Header Height + Footer Height)
If you have any questions please ask.
Many Thanks

Why does the top and bottom of my clips get cut off?
Hi, I'm new to iMovie and I've encountered an annoying problem. I imported all my movie files from my flash drive without any issues. I dragged a clip from the section with all the clips to the play reel. I previewed the clip, both normal screen and full screen, and both times the top and bottom of the clip was cut off. I tried it again with different clips but the same thing kept happening? Can anyone tell me why this happens because my head keeps getting cut off and I don't like it one bit.
First, you can go into File/Project Preferences and adjust the aspect ratio of your project to either widescreen (16:9) or standard (4:3), to match your footage.
You can combine footage that is widescreen and standard in the same project. In this case, you have to tell imovie how to handle the clips that do not fit the overall project aspect ratio. To do this, you can select a clip in your project and use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool. If you select FIT, it will preserve the whole frame by inserting black bars (letterboxing). If you select CROP it will cut off the top and bottom. You can select the default for this in Project Properties. -
How can I print the top and bottom halves of 11x17 PDF on 8.5x11?
I have a multi-page 11x17 PDF of quiz cards designed to be printed double-sided so that a question appears on one side and the answer on the other side. (Page 1 has the questions; page 2 has the answers.) My printer is 8.5x11 so I would like to print the top half of 11x17 page 1 onto 8.5x11 page 1 and the bottom half of 11x17 page 1 onto 8.5x11 page 2. Then I will flip the 8.5x11 pages over and repeat the process, this time printing 11x17 page 2.
Is there a way to print the top and bottom halves of an 11x17 PDF onto two 8.5x11 pages?
Thanks!The easiest solution I know of requires you to have a copy of Adobe InDesign. You can easily layout PDFs within InDesign in the configuration you want and create a new PDF.
I don't know any way to print it directly in that layout, unfortunately. -

Set top and bottom inset spacing values in Text Frame Options via jsx script
I am looking for a way to set the top and bottom inset spacing values only to 2 points in Text Frame Options via a .jsx scrpt.
For years, I have used a script that sets Preferences, such as:
with(app.storyPreferences){
opticalMarginAlignment = false;
opticalMarginSize = 12; // pts
I would like to add the code to this same script that would make Top = 0p2 and Bottom 0p2 but leave Left and Right as 0p0.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Here is the full .jsx file that we now use to set preferences.
Ideally, this could be modified to include setting any text frame created to have 0p2 inset Top and Bottom, but 0p0 Left and Right:

//An InDesign CS2 JavaScript
//Sets the application text defaults, which will become the text defaults for all
//new documents. Existing documents will remain unchanged.

Ghosting from top and bottom of the workspace edges when moving around workspace?
When I move around the workspace dark grey slightly transparent bars appear to be ghosting from the top and bottom of the workspace. If I move so they go off screen they disappear but more are made as I move around. Tried restarting Illustrator and my laptop, I have the newest version of Illustrator CC.
*Update - It appears to only happen in my one file, when an image I'm drawing over is put on a lower opacity. If I have it opaque there's no weird line ghosting, but as soon as I make it more transparent the lines start appearing.All I am doing is the following:
import my mov file that is 1024 x 820
create a sequence that is 1024 x 768
export the sequence
I made a video showing the steps (very boring, sorry).
I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing. i'm 99% sure my result is wrong from the looks of it in the movie player.

I was using Firefox for a few years with great enjoyment. Recently I opened it and within a second or so, it enlarged to the point that the top and bottom of the screen expanded off the screen. No other windows in any other program are doing this. The only way to close it is by using the task manager. Very frustrated. What other info do you need?
Hi ConnieHampton,
FIrefox will remember the last window size you had, which is why it keeps opening too large each time you open and close it. To fix this, try resetting Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/changes-toolbars-and-window-sizes-are-not-saved?esab=a&s=resize+window&r=7&as=s
If you don't see your menu bar, you may be in full screen mode, and can turn it off by following these instructions: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-make-firefox-and-websites-go-full-screen?esab=a&s=full+screen&r=0&as=s
If this doesn't work, please let us know and we'll figure out another way to fix it. -
Black Borders Top and Bottom in iMovies
Hi,
I'm editing Quicktime files in iMovies 5.0.2. with a view to putting them on line as streaming film clips. Before I imported these files into iMovies, there were no black borders around the films, non at either the sides of the screen and non at the top or bottom (I cropped them off in MPEG streamclip when I was convering the files from .VOB files to Quicktime files).
After editing these Quicktime files I am compressing them via the 'File -share' function in iMovies. I am compressing them as Quicktime files using the 'Expert settings.' (I'll spare you all the details of exactly what setting I'm using)
My problem is, that although there are no black borders when I import these files into iMovies, as soon as they appear in iMovies there are black borders on the clips, both at the top and the bottom (though not at the sides).
I have tried different things during compression (such as checking and unchecking various boxes in 'expert settings - sizing options') but I still I cannot make a film that doesn't have these black borders both at the top and the bottom of the film (like what's called 'cine screen' I think)
I want to get rid of these black borders. Does anyone know how I can do this in iMovies?
Thanks.
iBookG4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
iBookG4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)Hi,
Thanks for the advice.
Ian.
