Saving/Importing iPhoto PDF Books

I worked out in iPhoto 6 that you can save any Books you make out as a PDF file. This is great because you have a PDF file that is safe forever, and anyone can view it whether they're on a Mac or PC.
HOWEVER, there doesn't seem to be a way to import PDF books made with iPhoto, back into iPhoto. Why is that? It's a shame, because it would be nice to be able to re-import any book you've made, and have the option of sending it off for printing again.

I hadn't though of trying to use the pdf files of each page to order a new book but you can if you use a theme that has a a full bleed, one photo per page layout and then use each page photo on such a page. Just tired it and did not get the low resolution warning. However, it may not be as sharp as the original.
If you want to preserve a book for future orders here's one way you can:
1 - duplicate the library and name the copy "Book Library" or something identifying the book's content.
2 - open the book library and delete all the photos that are not in the book. You can do that by opening the book, typing Command-I to bring up the Info/keyword pane and give each photo in the book a unique keyword.
Create a Smart Album with the criteria Keyword is not xxxx. Select all of those photos in the Smart Album and type Command-D. That will move the photos to the Trash where you can delete them. Since some users have reported problems with deleting large numbers of photos at one time, if you have similar problems you can select a smaller number and do it in batches.
3 - now burn that book library folder to a CD with the Finder.
4 - when another copy of the book is desired, copy that folder to the Desktop from the CD and open it with iPhoto (launch with Option key depressed), order the book and then delete the folder.
This also provides a good archive of the book.

  • How can I import iphoto projects (books) into Iphoto?

My un-backupped Mac crashed, and I had the files recreated professionally. Now I want to import my books back into iPhoto, but either I am trying with the wrong files, or I am doing it wrong. Anyway I cannot import the "project.db" files, which the Mac tries to open i Word by default!
Any ideas how to do it?

Simply putting files in to specific places is enough to recreate the Library. An iPhoto Library is not just a gathering of files but a complex ecosystem of interlinked files, caches and database files. It's more than the sum of its parts, and those parts are not always what you think. For instance, those project.db files have nothing to do with books

  • Saving & moving iPhoto 8 book

I created a book in iPhoto 8 earlier this year and had several copies printed.  I have since created another iPhoto library because of the thousands of photos in my original iPhoto library.  I would like to move my original iPhoto library (which contains the book) to an external hard drive to free up space.  Is there a way to keep the book project intact when the old library is moved?

Just move the Library - that will move everything.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • HT5557 importing pdf book to ibooks

Does anyone know how to import books that are
    PDF files into iBooks?

    Hello SandieR,
The following article would be a good place to start in the quest to get your PDFs into the iBooks application.

  • Re-importing a lost book from pdf

    Hello.
About 2 years ago the mover dropped my iMac and pooched my drive. After a new drive was installed I was able to recover all my photo's but never any of the projects (Calendars, Books etc.) Now I wish to reprint a book I made, but no longer have it. I do however have the PDF. Is it possible to import the pdf, as or into a book, and still have the text editable. Or am I making a new book, and typing everything out again?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you can't find someone who can print the pdf into a book you might try the following:
1 - open the pdf file file and start a print job. I
2 - n the Print window click on the PDF button.
3 - select Save PDF to iPhoto option.
This will make a 200 dpi jpg image of each page in the pdf file and import it into an iPhoto album. Immediately rename the pages by the Batch Change menu option to Page -1, Page -2, etc. so in case they get rearranged you can easily reorder them.
Now create a new book and for each page select the layout that has a photo for the page background.
Adding a jpg to each page will completely fill the page. It might work well enough.
If you want to obtain 300 dpi jpgs of each pdf page download this Automator workflow, Save PDF to iPhoto 300 DPI.workflow, from Toad's Cellar and place it in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder. That will show up in the PDF menu I mentioned above. This might offer a littler better resolution for the printing. Then you can reorder from Apple. To avoid this in the future see Old Toad's Tutorial #9a - Archiving an iPhoto 7/8 Book for Editing and/or Ordering at a Later Date.
If you have someone print the PDF file, like FedEx Kinkos, they may not be able to bind the book with hard covers. You'll just need to shop around.

  • Importing a library book from Iphoto 5

Please help anyone! My wife worked really hard on an iphoto book of our wedding on my old ibook G4. It has iphoto 5. When she tried to order the book, it said she had to update her iphoto. We don't have the money to put ilife on the old ibook, and are wondering if there is any way to get the book onto my macbook. I exported it as a PDF (though its only 48 mbs, and the book is 127 4-6 mb pics). Im afraid it lost quality in the pdf, and even if it didn't I can't figure out how to import the pdf as a new book in the iphoto on my macbook. Anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

  • Importing a finished book from iphoto to apeture

Can you import a finished book from the iphoto library to apeture?

As iPhoto has some funny pages layout (but with less control), I use iPhoto to do some pages for my Aperture books. Print the page to PDF then use Photoshop to convert the appropriate page to JPG then import to your Aperture book.
You can use the same steps with pages designed in any other apps (Pages, ...)

PDF files cannot be natively opened in InDesign. They can only be placed as graphics.

  • Why will IPhoto not import a PDF image now - it has previously?

Why will iphoto not import a PDF image now - it has previously?

This feature was removed with iPhoto 11. You'll need to ask Apple why:
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
In the meantime you can convert a pdf to jpeg or tiff using Preview.

  • Iphoto 09: downloads, game screencaps saving in iphoto help to stop

I have a new mac book pro with iphoto 09 up to date.
I am so used to the older iphoto without "events" so it is taking me time to actually use it.
Today I started to go through some photos I uploaded weeks ago and discovered somehow throughout the photos there are random photos, some seem to be screencaps I'd say of pages we have visited, some are photos of downloads whether they are photos or scans etc and some are off the desktop of different pdfs etc and some were photos taken with photobooth. These were in different 'events' named desktop, downloads etc. Then there were also photos of different text font types etc all the way through and little pictures of things like the Skype 'S'.
I have no idea how they got there or how to turn it off! I am not the only one using this computer but none of us know how this happened.
Googling didn't seem to bring the usual quick answer.
Just want to stop it so that not all things sitting on desktop etc end up saved in iphoto.
    Thanks

For some reason this seems to happen on the initial import sometimes
If you have not added a bunch of new photos to iphoto just quit, drag the iPhoto library to the desktop and launch iPhoto creating a new library and import your photos again - if that all works this time then trash the iPhoto library on the desktop

  • IPhoto 7 importing iPhoto 6 data: way too many images

In iPhoto 7 (aka iPhoto '08) on 10.4.10 MBP, I mounted a hard drive with data from another Mac (using iPhoto 6, 10.3.9); this library has about 32,000 items. On import, iPhoto 7 sees 47,000+ images! The pics it's importing look like deleted and un-rotated ones - aargh! (:-( Please tell me it's not importing deleted, recovered and otherwise unwanted or duplicate images.

    mactester:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As TD pointed out if you imported the V6 library either via the menu or by dragging the library into the open iPhoto 7 window you'll get every image file in the library.
iPhoto Library Manager will copy the rolls or albums from one to another library and keep the metadata intact. HOWEVER, both libraries must be at the save version. So you'll need to upgrade that other library by opening it with iPhoto 7 and doing the converting. Then iPLM can copy the photos to the primary library like this.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can a JPEG be 'saved as' a PDF (or other file type)?

Can a JPEG file be saved as a PDF file?
Also, can it be saved in a file format that will allow the image to be inserted into, e.g., a WORD document? (Or can a JPEG itself simply be inserted into a WORD doc 'as is'?)
    Thanks.

You can reformat a .jpg to PDF.
No, it doesn't reformat it. The .jpg is simply embedded into the PDF file. As BDAqua noted, if it's a high resolution image, OS X's built in PDF creation module will knock it down to screen resolution.
For some reason, I was sent a chart (with numbers) as a jpeg file. Converting it to, and then printing it as, a PDF leaves the data in too small a font size.
What size is the .jpg before you place it into a PDF? Open it in Preview and press Command+I. What is the image size in pixels and image DPI (resolution)?
Is there any way to enlarge the text (via iPhoto, Preview, or some other Mac utility)?
72 dpi is low, screen resolution. 300 dpi is standard high, print resolution. So if the original is already a low res file, then there's little to nothing you can do to improve the text on a printed piece.
