Saving in Lightroom

What I want to do is export my finished, adjusted picture to a file in order that I can work on it using another product. I have tried to use the export facility but found it was saving the original unchanged document not my updated one. I am using a trial version of the 2.3 version at the moment and if all goes well will be buying the full version next month. Is this a restriction on the trial version or am I doing something wrong.
Regards
Dale

When you do an export LR does not change the original file but creates a new file with you edits and saves to a specified location.
Check the export dialog to see where the exported file has been saved. You should have two files the original one and the exported one.
Have a look at this site and you will find some very good tutorials (free) to get you started on a good footing with LR. Enjoy.

  • Multiple Edits in Photoshop not saving into Lightroom?

In Lightroom 3 I was able to edit in Photoshop, save the file, then make another edit in photoshop and save it under a different name, and that file would also show up in Lightroom.
    For example;
in Lightroom I select "Image 1" and select edit in photoshop,
I edit this in photoshop and save.
    Lightroom shows "Image 1-edit"
I make another edit and select "Save As" and save it as "Image 1 Alternate".
"Image 1 Alternate" shows up in Lightroom next to "Image 1-edit"
This does not appear to be happening with Lightroom 4. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
    Thanks for your replies

Additional "save as" edits are saved into Lightroom 3. It does not "break the link".
I'm assuming here that you are using Photoshop CS5.x and the current version of Camera Raw? If so, this is as expected...LR4 is using a pipeline that will match up to ACR 7 when it's released.
As it is now, LR4 must actually do the processing prior tp sending it to Photoshop. LR4 also has to save the file on disk prior to sending it to Photoshop.
If you were using ACR 7 in CS6 then ACR would actually be doing the processing and the behavior of this way of opening in Photoshop does NOT have to save the file prior to sending it to Photoshop. When ACR does the opening, you can do a Save or a Save As and Lightroom will know about those saves. Pretty LR4 doesn't know where the Save As file goes to and that's why it isn't showing up.
The two basic behaviors; LR synced with ACR and LR not synced with ACR goes back to version 2 (I think). It's a limitation in LR when LR and ACR aren't in sync.

  • Saving from Lightroom to elseware on PC

    Hi There-
I am a very new user to Lightroom and would like to know if you can save an edited or worked on photo from Lightroom to elseware on the computer. I looked for a "save" or "save as" option ion the "file" in the upper toolbar, but it did not have anything like that.
Thanks for looking and look forward to your reply.
    Sincerely- Doug

There's no save command because saving should not a normal part of your workflow in Lightroom. After you are done editing, LR remembers your edits automatically, so no save is needed. To display your edits, you fire up Lightroom, and it will display your edits.
Should you want to use a photo outside of LR (like for e-mail, or uploading) you could do a File->Export, and which creates a copy of your edited photo anywhere you want it to go.

  • Photoshop quit before saving to Lightroom...now I'm only getting an error message

I've been using Lightroom for 3 years. I usually have no problem editing between Lightroom and Photoshop, but yesterday a file crashed in Photoshop, as it was saving back to Lightroom. Now I cannot open files to edit in Photoshop. The error says "Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at /Volumes/2014 Photography Lightroom Back-Up/2014-08-22/DSC_1698.NEF for editing. It will not be opened." I have to get this sorted ASAP, anybody got any ideas?

  • Images saving on Desktop only otherwise unreadable by lightroom

    Hi there
I went to upload my images into Lightroom and found they all stored on my desktop . If I move them into the file where all my other images are they are no longer readable/ no longer recoverable in Lightroom. I have never had this problem before having used Lightroom for 3 years.
The one thing I thought it could have something to do with is they have dropped into Lightroom as for example......untitled - 74.dng
I can see that my other images that have correctly saved in Lightroom room save as for example.......IMG_3217.dng
The last number for my uploads that did work correcly was IMG_8960.dng. I thought if it was close to 10000 then it may have clocked and gone back to zero but this doesn't seem to be the case.
If you can help me that would be great.
    Many thanks

When you create a site definition in DW, you give it a name.  e.g. yourSiteName or yourSiteName2.  It's just a name so you can easily identify it.
The Local Site Folder associated with that site name can be anything you selected.  eg. c:\ABCD or desktop\WXYZ.  The site name and the folder name may not necessarily be the same.  They could be if you set it up that way, but they don't need to be.  See screenshot.
If your Files Panel shows SiteName with no associated files, click on the plus sign to expand the list.
If you still see no files, you can delete that site definition by going to Site > Manage Sites.  And then create a new Site Definition that correctly points to your local Site folder.

  • Restarting Lightroom - how to do it *and* have preferences saved (& start up with specified catalog)

I know one way to restart Lightroom (with specified catalog), however preferences are not saved:
    Win: lightroom.exe -restart {catalog}
    Mac: open {catalog}
However sometimes (usually) it would be better if preferences were saved on the way out.
PS - I can exit Lightroom with preferences saved by stuffing the keyboard (Alt/Cmd-FX), but how to get it to startup again (with specified catalog).
    Any ideas?
    Rob

Before invoking those commands to start LR on a catalog, politely terminate the application:
    Windows: taskkill /im lightroom.exe
Mac: osascript -e 'tell application "Adobe Photoshop LIghtroom 5" to quit'
These send a "quit" event to the application.  A quickie experiment indicates that LR does indeed save its preferences before terminating, but you should definitely test it more thoroughly.
(I knew the Windows solution immediately, but had to Google the Mac one after discovering the Unix "kill pid" isn't trapped by Mac apps.)
If you're invoking these as shell scripts from a plugin, I think you might have to do some more magic to ensure that the shell script doesn't terminate immediately after it kills its parent (the LR process).  On Windows, I think (but not positive) the following would work:
    start killandrestart.bat
On Unix, I think the magic is:
    nohup killandrestart.sh &
but I haven't tried it on Mac OS.

  • Help!! I have used an external hard drive on my Macbook Pro to save photos and edit.  Now I have purchased a desktop Apple machine, and new copy of lightroom, however, I cannot see the files on the desktop using the external hard drive.

Hi, I am wondering if someone knows if I can open/(how I see) the files I have saved in Lightroom on my Mac laptop, on my new desktop?

You want to transfer the catalog file to the new desktop using your operating system, and open that by double-clicking on it. Then reconnect the photos to Lightroom (if necessary) by these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

  • Edits in CS4 not showing in Lightroom 3.3

Since upgrading to Lightroom 3.3, edits using the tools in Photoshop CS4 do not appear after saving in Lightroom.  There is a note that says the version of Camera Raw may no longer be compatible with  LR 3.3 when opening for editing.  Do I need to reinstall and earlier version of LR?  jc

Thank you for your swift reply.  I have
rechecked my problem and need to be a li
ttle more specific.  When I use save from CS4
the file it is saving is a psd and not a tiff as it saved when
rendering in LR3.  Therefore, the actual edits are not being saved to the saved tiff file which appears in LS3.  I am having to go into the original folder and find the psd version of the saved file and import it.  I guess what I am saying is that using the save command no longer saves to LS3.  What am I doing wrong?  jc

  • Optimizing images / lightroom - photoshop workflow.

Is it better to save your files in photoshop cs5 (save for the web and other devices) or Lightroom 4.3. through the export function? Which method would result in better optimized images.
Is it possible to initially edit images in Lightroom 4.3; them export them to photoshop cs5 to use the save for the web and other devices feature and them retreive the files thus saved in Lightroom 4.3?
    Many thanks

I think one is as good as the other regarding quality if the quality settings are identical.
Exporting an image as JPG in Lr is more convenient because you can check the box <Add to catalog> in the Export Dialog. Thus you always have your JPGs visible in Lr.
    ToeTolle wrote:

Yes, it is possible but it's not as convenient. When you send an image to CS5 for editing, the direct way (right-click and select <Edit in Photoshop CS5) works only with PSDs or TIFFs, depending on your settings in Preferences. You can save the image in CS5 as JPG for web but it will not be automatically imported and visible in Lr. You would have to import it manually either via the Import Dialog or via <Synchronize Folder>.
On top of that you are left with the PSD (that is automatically re-imported in Lr) that you don't need and it would have to be deleted manually.
Therefore it's far more convenient to create the JPG via export from Lr.
You can select the quality in the Export Dialog and you can sharpen for screen in three different amounts.

  • Lightroom Versus Photoshop CS

I use Photoshop CS to enhance/correct my Nikon camera files shot in RAW format. During the process of printing through Photoshop, my workflow consists of making sure I have calibrated the monitor (using X-rite Eye-one Display 2), have updated printer profiles, turn off color management through the printer dialog box, and use soft proofing. How does Lightroom compare to this workflow? Is it easier to use and are the printed results better? Is there a soft proofing method to use in Lightroom? I have my color preferences setup in Photoshop CS to my liking. So, is there a comparable color settings screen to setup in Lightroom? How are files saved in Lightroom if I want to open them in my CS version or won't this older version read them?

One of the advantages you would realize with Lightroom is that you would have all of the raw editing capabilities that have been added to the later versions of Camera Raw.  You would have so much more available to you that you would wonder what you were thinking, trying to stay with Photoshop CS.  Camera Raw version 2 is hardly recognizable compared to what is available in the newer versions.
Lightroom will save a copy of your raw image as a PSD or TIF image, and will pass that image with all of the Lightroom adjustments to Photoshop CS.  Any adjustments you make in Photoshop will be part of the PSD or TIF image.  The raw image is never modified by Photoshop.  Of course, that is not unique to Lightroom.  But I just wanted to point that out.
I'm not sure how to answer your other questions.  Lightroom allows you to specify ProPhoto, Adobe RGB, or sRGB as the color space for PSD or TIF images.  Since you already have all of your soft proofing and preferences set up in Photoshop, you might want to consider still printing as you have been doing in the past.

  • When I export a photo from lightroom, the image is very pixelated.

When I export a photo from lightroom, the image is very pixelated. This pixelization occurs irrespective of whether I make adjustments in Lightroom.  It seems that just placeing the photo into he develope modual  without doing anything to it taints the image in such a manner that when it is exported from the develope modual the expot comes out pixelated.

    Brett,
The photo i was a panorama knitted in Photoshop from four photos which were approx 3.3 MB each. The knitted pic came out to be 1.10MB. The panorama pic I was trying to refine in Lightroom and export came out to be 70.9 KB and extremly pixilated. Whether I altered it  in Lightroom  or not didn't matter.
I can't imagine that bringing up the photo in the Develop modual would result in pixilization when it was exported regardless of whether it was altered or not altered.!!
Attached is  a copy of the Photoshop saved and Lightroom exported photos before and after. I appreciate your help and interest. The top pic 1.10MB is what was saved on Photoshop. The bottom pic 70.9KB is the unaltered pic exported out of the Develop modual exhiiting the pixelization.

  • Lightroom 2..2 Crashes (XP): Two things that seemed to help

Like a number of other users, I have experienced a record number of crashes since I upgraded to Lightroom 2.0. 2.2 only made it worse. I have tried most of the steps recommended in the FAQ, without much success. Here are a couple of fixes I have tried that seem to substantially reduce, though not eliminate, crashes for me. YMMV.
    1. I run AVG antivirus software. I disabled the "Resident Shield" option. This is the internal monitoring function that scans files as they are copied, opened and saved. Lightroom generates a huge number of files. Disabling this function seemed to help. I believe several other anti virus software programs like Norton have similar functions that monitor internal processes that can be defeated.(This is a relatively recent "innovation" in virus software.)
    2. When it was really getting buggy, rather than do a complete uninstall/reinstall of Lightroom 2.2, I left the current install on the machine, launched the 2.2 upgrade installer and selected "Repair" rather than "install." That went pretty quick and when I relaunced, performance was substantially better with greatly reduced crashes. I know this may seem ridiculously elementary, but it made a difference.
Having said that, as others have pointed out, using the brush function vigorously still just about guarantees a crash is in my near future, so when I am using the brush, I regularly exit and relaunch the application.
Adobe, why isn't there a "Save" command so I don't have to exit? That would make living with this buggy release a lot easier.
    Hope this helps.
    WW

My thoughts exactly. A good thing about Lightroom is that it does "save" your changes almost immediately, so you don't lose all of them in a crash. That is probably why Adobe does not have a "Save" command.
The problem is that Adobe did not count on an application that can freeze solid like Arctic Tundra every 20-minutes or so. Preemptively exiting and relaunching helps avoid that by (apparently) resetting resources. A "save" command that performs the same function would be faster & easier.

  • 32 bit TIFF from Lightroom

When I import a 32 bit TIFF sequence (which has been developed then saved in Lightroom) into After Effects it seems to ignore all the develop settings. The only way I can get this to work is to export the developed TIFF's from Lightroom as DNG files, then import those into AE.
Am I missing something? I would have expected AE to read the changes made to the TIFF's.
    Any help appreciated.

Yep, same issue here. You can Export using 16 bit depth and ProPhoto RGB to create a copy, which is what you are actually working with in LR anyhow. It would be nice if 'Edit In' would give you a warning that "LR can only create a 16bit copy with adjustments applied, do you want to proceed," instead of simply failing. Perhaps log this a 4.1 bug?

  • How is JPG metadata saved after edit?

99% of my Beta and Prerelease work has been with RAW files. Last night I was playing with importing some legacy JPEG files, applying keywording and ratings. Trying to get some sort of DAM practice going.
When I make metadata changes to imported JPG files, I see the changes are persistent. I had hoped the metadata would be updated in / written to the actual JPG files, (to maximize flexibility in future). But a dissection of the file shows that it's not there. I assume the data is maintained in the LR library.
Whoops, here's a menu entry for XMP -> Import/Export that I've never had to use before. (I always keep the XMP sidecar preference set to on. Any import of RAWs, autocreates the XMP files.) [as a former RSP user, I'm a little more accustomed to that paradigm]
So, I export the XMP data, and instead of getting an XMP sidecar file, I get a copy of the JPG file, which is about 20% smaller than the source file, that does in fact contain the updated metadata.
What's happening here? Is the metadata update not made in a lossless manner? Is the copy a way of adhering to the premise of not altering the source file? Am I not doing something correctly?
For me, this is only pertinent to legacy/inherited files; I try to work stricly in RAW. But I may to have to rethink my DAM strategy if I'm going to have to keep two copies of my legacy JPGs.
    thanks ....brad

Is there an option to write edit data to .xmp files for .jpg files, as there was in Beta 4.1? Most of my files are RAW, but occasionally I use a point and shoot camera that only saves files as .jpg. My workflow is to treat these .jpg files as master files (just like RAW files) and to never modify them. In Beta 4.1 I was able to do this with all of the edits stored in .xmp files. Now with V1.0, I see that all of my MASTER .jpg files have been re-saved by Lightroom, the existing .xmp files are not being updated, and it is unclear where the edits are being stored. I am VERY unhappy with this change as Lightroom has chosen to modify my master files without giving me an option!!!
