Saving Indesign book as a preview image

Hey everyone,
Can anyone help me recreate what is going on in this image.. I have a book that I layed out in indesign and I want to save it to look like this image for my portfolio site but I dont no how to execute this. I am not sure if it is something you can do in indesign or if it is a pdf thing.
I have search everywhere..
Thanks!!
Wesley

There ar exisitng several CMS and Plugins which can perform this automatically. But a workaround would be to set up a document where you place a complete exported pdf page by page side by side once and design this page as you want to.
For every other issue of the magazine you need only to relink the pdf.
If this would not be a book but a single file you could also place the indd directly without creating a pdf before, also possible to do it with the indd of the book file, but I suppose that it would cost more work to relink it with every issue.

  • Saving InDesign files with embedded preview on server

When I save my InDesign files on my internal hard drive, the preview shows up just fine.
But when I save on my work´s server, the preview dissapears.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I could have sworn that explorer generated its own thumbnail from a tiff image. If I am right then I would say that either the file is actually another format that your program is capable of reading but explorer is not but was renamed to the tiff extention.
Or something happened to the association of the tiff extention.
Something else to check, when exporting the tiff image try an uncompressed version and make sure the byte order is for IBM PC.
I also think image pyramid is not supported (though I am not totally sure what that is, lol.)
One other thing to check, your folder make sure it is not read only and you have enough drive space. These you probably already know, but explorer needs to create a file in that folder that holds the thumbnails.
    Hopefully something above will help...

  • Saving InDesign Book

I have a book file that is using InDesign 4. It has 19 chapters (380 pages). I kept it in ID4 because it was a revision for a second printing, 16 months after the original book was created. I was apprehensive about opening it in a newer version ID 5 which I have on another computer (have 5.5 to install) because of any possible formatting problems.
Okay revision complete, pdf off to publisher.  Now I want to save it on another hard drive for back up and on another hard drive to open it in a newer version of ID.  The problem is it will not save the current book with the revised chapters anywhere.  The chapters don't register the date for current modifications! But the changes are there as long as i don't try to copy or move them to another drive. They revert to a very early version of the book, not even the last one for the first printing, when ever i move them and open on another computer.  Each chapter shows old dates when moved and doesn't have the latest modifications.  The old dates are there on the Chapters in ID4 but the files are current when I open them in ID4.
This means that the only current version i can open is on a hard drive, on one computer with ID 4. I cannot make a back up, save as, or copy and paste.
I wonder if I could "save as" each chapter individually? Then create a new book?
I want to work on an interactive version in 5.5 without touching the print version but I can't seem to make an updated copy.
    JR

Thanks Peter. Amazing, updated all the chapter  files in the process. Plus this appears to bring everything along, fonts and graphics. Now that the ID 4 book chapters have been updated I can move them around as well.  I have opened the packaged files in ID 5 and I now have a back up I can copy.
    Great!

  • I am unable to get same preview image colors in Bridge and Lightroom

I am unable to get same file preview in Bridge and Lightroom. The Lightroom preview image (in both the Library and Develop) is more de-saturated. But the exported/saved jpegs match. If I try to match the Lightroom preview image to the Bridge preview image, the resulting Lightroom  export colors are off. I have tried this with images with no changes and with changes and the result is the same. I have Lightroom 5.6 and CR 8.6. I am using the latest version of Bridge.
I contacted Adobe support and followed all instructions to try to fix but the problem remains. This comment was made after several solutions were tried, including updating Lightroom. :
Adobe: there would be little difference in case of preview of Bridge CC and Lightroom 5. However, after exporting it would be same. Both use different technology at the background and work in a different way. The preview which you see in lightroom is not the actual image but incase of Bridge you see the actual image ( original ). That's the reason there is a color variation between previews.
Me: But how can I then use the Lightroom preview to get accurate colors when processing a RAW file? If I do adjustments to the RAW file in Lightroom it looks different when exported. That doesn't seem to make sense when Lightroom is designed for photograhy
Adobe: Please check in develop module of lightroom.
Me: Nothing changes in the develop mode. The image looks the same as in the preview/Library mode.
This screenshot shows the unmodified images in Develop (Lightroom) and ACR (Bridge). The color differences are significant.
Lightroom exported jpeg file, unmodified from preview image in Develop (which looks like Bridge preview image not the Lightroom preview)
Bridge saved jpeg file, unmodified from preview image in ACR
Any suggestions on what I need to do to Lightroom to make it show accurate colors. If not, I don't see any point in using it to process files.
    Thanks, Marie

Bridge is just a browser. It displays according to the embedded color profile but assumes sRGB for all untagged images.
In Lightroom library previews use Adobe RGB and in Develop the working space is Pro Photo RGB.
The real question is why use both Bridge and Lightroom. Stick to one, not both.

  • Why can't I see a preview image when opening files in InDesign?

I have "Always save preview images with documents" checked in File Handling, also with Save As. But I can only see the CS3 ID icon in my folders on the desktop, and when opening a file in InDesign. I'm running 10.4.11. Shouldn't I be able to see a preview image of the first page of an InDesign file?
    Thanks!

i think those preview images means that indesign saves a lowres image of every placed image inside indd. So you can open your indd in some other computer and see all placed images even if you don´t have all the original linked hires images transferred with indd.
If you want to see your documents first page as document icon, use Bridge to browse your files. It recognizes a content of indd files and show first page as icon. .

  • Can I extract an InDesign preview image?

Somehow one of my Tiff images that I use in InDesign has been corrupted. PS won't open it (it tells me that it is not a Tiff file), so the only record I have of the image is the preview that InDesign grabbed when I first imported the image. InDesign shows me the image when I go to that page, but when I try to export or print, InDesign tells me it can't find the file.
This image is not a very important one. It is a simple drawing I made in PS with a few fills and I'm quite happy with the quality that I see in InDesign. So I thought I'd try to export it to PDF and grab the image from within the PDF. Wouldn't export. OK, how about embedding the file and exporting? No go. Print? No.
That is my problem. Instead of me spending a few hours to redraw the image, given that I'm happy with what I see on screen, can I get the image out of InDesign?

Sandee, maybe I didn't do what you suggested. Let me use colours to explain what I did. I clicked on the white pointer, clicked on the image and it was surrounded by a brown rectangle, then I copied (or cut) and nothing got copied to the clipboard. I tried images that are OK, and still nothing happened. I am using CS, maybe that's why I can't copy a preview image.
Do you mean that when you copy an image with the direct selection tool, that you are copying InDesign's stored preview to the clipboard?
    I also tried these:
    1. Copying the image and pasting it back into InDesign CS. That worked, but I couldn't copy the second image to the clipboard.
    2. Cut the image and repasted into InDesign. Again, I wasn't able to copy or cut to the clipboard.
Maybe trying to paste into Photoshop CS is where the problem lies. I'm going to download a trial version of CS3 to see if that works.

  • Preview image in an InDesign doc

Is it possible to extract the preview images (as used by Bridge to preview the contents of an InDesign doc) from an InDesign doc?

@FergyMac – basically a good idea, but you are limited to the browers' pdf viewing capabilities.
So most (all?) of that kind of pdf viewer will not support live transparency (amongst other features like color management etc.pp.).

  • Exporting InDesign Book to Epub (general questions)

    Re: InDesign CC
    http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/article.asp?BaseFolder=prcgen&File=opfguides.htm
    http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/article.asp?BaseFolder=prcgen&File=cover.htm
I've created a 366 page book using about 32 individual .indd files and have some general exporting-to-epub questions.
    1. Images.
My images are placed .ai and .psd files that have names I can understand, such as picture-of-this.ai and picture-of-that.psd. When InDesign exports to epub, the images are renamed to something that a species whose native language is binary can understand. For example, this and that get renamed to 12345.jpg and 67890.jpg. And then there is also a funky naming convention that keeps the original name but adds _fmt.jpeg to it.
Is it possible for me to export to epub and keep original file names?
    2. content.opf metadata
Ultimately my epub needs to be converted into Kindle format. Amazon provides a Kindle Previewer that converts the file into their required .mobi format and that works, but some minor customization is required to get it to work right. The minor customizations include assigning the cover page, the table of contents (toc), and in my opinion, an even more important start page.
My cover page, toc, and start page exist as individual .indd files.
According to the mobipocket references (provided above), I need to add a few items to the content.opf file:
    For the cover:
    <metadata> <meta name="cover" content="my-cover-image" /> </metadata>
    <manifest> <item href="MyCoverImage.jpg" id="my-cover-image" media-type="image/jpeg" /> </manifest>
    For the table of contents:
    <guide> <reference type="toc" title="Table of Contents" href="mytoc.html"/> </guide>
    For the start page:
    <guide> <reference type="start" title="Start here" href="starthere.html"/> </guide>
So, I can use Dreamweaver easily enough to open the content.opf file and manually insert those codes, but is there a way I can pre-code their key values into the InDesign page so that they are automatically placed in the proper positions on export?

    Hi Michael.
That's a good suggestion about inserting jpg's into the InDesign document and then exporting to epub. I've done that before and it's worked quite well, especially with consideration to file size. However, this particular book has over 130 graphics and it's also going to the printing press... so I'm trying to keep my workload to be as efficient as possible. So you wouldn't have known that, and again, that's a great suggestion.
I have not been able to get that plugin to work, and it's also no longer necessary. Kindle has a previewer that automatically converts the file to .mobi format, and allows the user to view the .mobi file through viewing screens that represent the Kindle device:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000765261
Thanks for the info on the ALT text. I need to do that.... I've also looked through the File Info window tabs and did not find any area that seemed to allow me to enter that information.
I have previously created and published on Kindle one book that was one single InDesign file, and as you suggested, had the cover and TOC with everything else. Unfortunately, there too, I had to manually enter the cover, start, and toc code using Dreamweaver.
It looks like at this time there's no easy way to get around manually updating the .html files.
Thanks for making the time to reply.

  • Bridge CC / How to use all cores to generate preview images?

    Hi!
Is there anyway to tell Brdige, that it should use all my cores to generate the preview images?
Actually it uses only 25% of my CPU performance. I've a Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3,4 GHZ, with four cores and enabled hyperthreading, also eight virtual CPUs.
At least it could be FOUR times faster, if it would use all available cores, but so I get one preview per second (12 MP RAWs). So I've to wait in case of 1.000 RAWs round about 15 minutes. If would use all CPUs, which are available, it could increase speed up to 4 minutes. More then 10 minutes saved.
As there any chance, or does Adobe have no interest, like it has no interest to speed up LightRoom?
If there is any chance, I would be very pleased.
    Thanks

    It's really frustrating:
While Adobe Camera RAW is able to process different images in parallel and speeding up the process.
Other teams of Adobe are still telling me, that it's impossible to process several images in parallel and speeding up the Bridge thumbnail and preview generating process:

  • Export an alternate layout from a indesign book

    Hello,
I'm working on a big file, which has been, for size reasons, separated in multiple files that have then been assembled in an indesign book
Problem: This document is edited for print and also as an interactive pdf for ipad, which is why I have created an alternate layout for the ipad version, which contains a navigation based on hyperlinks, linking different pages and documents from the Book.
But here is the thing, when exporting the whole book to pdf (using the Indesign Book panel), I can't choose the layout I want to export, as I can do when I export from a single document with several alternate layouts
What I get when I export from a single file with two alternate layouts to interactive pdf
What I get when I export the Indesign Book with two alternate layouts to an interative pdf
Why is that? Is there a way I can export only one layout without having to RE-assemble the whole document into one file?
If I export the whole book as it is, my two alternate layouts are just following each other and it's a big mess, not to mention the hyperlinks don't work anymore.
Also, if the only way is to make one file, the file is then too heavy to be worked with, it's 280 pages long, with HD images on every page ( and the alternate layouts double the pages...)
    Does anyone have a solution?

You mean, breaking the document into two or three files and then exporting each of these and then assembling the pdf files?
But then the hyperlinks from one doc to another don't work. I tried it already.
The problem is that I need to export ALL of these documents into ONE pdf because of the interactivity of the hyperlinks.

  • Jpeg preview images -- how to check

Whenever I take my USB stick to a photolab to print images, if I don't save from Photoshop with "Image Previews" turned off (and most of the time I forget to turn it off), the dopy photolab machine recognises the previews as separate images and presents them as printable images (which they are not – they will print heavily pixellated).
Is there any way of checking in the Finder whether an image has a preview embedded – the kind that a photolab recognises – and be able to remove the preview if there is one? Or is this a Photoshop thing?
Note: this preview image I'm talking about does not appear to be the same preview as the Finder uses. Images saved from Photoshop with Image Previews turned on or off (Preferences > File Handling > File Saving Options > Image Previews > Never Save/Always Save), both have previews on the Desktop.

    Thanks for the responses.
    Kurt
"It's not clear what you're referring to when you say a Finder preview image; are you referring to QuickLook, which is a feature of Snow Leopard?"
I was not aware of QuickLook. The preview images are the ones that Finder shows you in "icon" format.
    Fane_J
    I'm using Photoshop CS4.
"…and another file containing the resource fork, with the same name and the prefix "._". This file is invisible…"
That's the one! I get two of every image and one of them has the underscore. The Fuji Lab warns you that it will not print properly, but it will allow you to print them. It has happened several times when friends want me to edit their images and I save them to their USB sticks – but forget to turn off preview. They get back to me complaining about the quality of the images when they choose the wrong one.
The Fuji Lab I am talking about is like this one: http://www.livingroom.org.au/photolog/images/fujifilm_DPC.jpg
The Fuji Lab also recognises every image in the trash. So if you have 500 images in the trash, and want to print only one image, you'll get 501 images to select from. What I mess.
I suspect it has something to do with the way PCs and the Fuji Lab interpret images, as a friend who uses a Mac to save Photoshop images onto a USB stick, and then takes them to the local camera club for projection, also complained to me (I was the one who suggested he use a USB stick) that the PC used for projection was picking up everything in the trash. He wanted to project half a dozen images, but several hundred came up.
Problem does not seem to occur if I burn to CD and use the CD to print or project images.
So the situation is: if I save images (preview on) from Photoshop onto a USB stick, the Fuji Labs recognise two images for each image, one of which has an underscore. All images in the trash are also recognised. Same seems to apply when read by a PC.
What does saving a preview image in Photoshop do anyway? Is it necessary? Maybe I should just turn off "Save Preview" and leave it off.
You mentioned FAT32. If I reformatted the USB stick to a different format, would that fix the problem?

  • Age Gate restricted Dailymotion preview images are not displayed - why?

No Dailymotion video preview image, which requires the Age Gate filter to be turned off, is displayed anymore in my Firefox 32.0.1 and 32.0.2, they are all black. It used to work a couple of weeks ago with an older version, and still works with IE.
Clearing caches and cookies and restarting the browser did not help, adblock is disabled, and all permissions are still on default, esp. to display images is allowed.
I can select "View image info" from the context menu and then the image is correctly displayed in the pop-up window.
For all other "nonclassified" videos, a preview image is displayed and mouse-over starts some kind of video preview. The context menu does not have a "View image info" entry here. This is the way it should be.

Canon PS 9, 10 Canon EOS 300D, 40D ... all my previous cameras, but not all images. As said, there seems to be no rule. Some pictures in the middle of a "roll". But sometimes several events in succession. All images can be opened in Preview. All images can be displayed in the Finder and iPhoto QuickView. If I want to show the images in the preview, are shows the unedited version. If I want to edit the pictures back into iPhoto, then the old edits will become visible again (for some pictures) but they can not be saved.
I have about 35,000 photos in the library, spread over about 1600 events.

  • APERTURE: Small preview images do not show the changes.

    excuse my lousy english...
    Problem with Aperture:
Small preview images do not show the changes.
I use Aperture 3 since August 2010. By November and 10 projects later it ran normally.
Since the project 11 are in the preview images shown (on the bottom bar in the shared representation) and in the pictures in the books no adjustments. I change for example a picture in b / w it remains in the small preview images bunt even though the great View Erbild s / w is. Even in the books then the famous picture colorful and even grobpixelig.
This is of course in the processing of multiple images per project huntert pretty annoying to have no overview of processed images ...:-(
I had a third installed for books and not as close a relationship.
Does anyone have similar experience or know someone how can I fix this?
    Thanks for reading!
    Lokoe

    Lokoe,
    To make sure we understand:
I change for example a picture in b / w it remains in the small preview images bunt even though the *great View Erbild s / w is*.
I am not sure what "s/w" is, but I think you mean:
"I change picture to black and white and the small preview images remain *in color* even though the *big picture in the Viewer* is in B/W."
Even in the books then the famous picture colorful and even grobpixelig.
"In the books the selected picture is colorful and even ???"
"Grobpixelig" -> "grosspixelig" -> "Looks like big pixels???" Not quite sure of the translation. It's been 15 years since I spoke Deutsch!

  • Can I force Photoshop CC to regenerate preview images?

I have a photoshop file that seems to have corrupted preview images.  When I look at the file in bridge I only see a photoshop icon.  I have tried the following solutions, all unsuccessfully:
        clearing the bridge thumbnail cache
saving the file as a copy in photoshop.
         restarting my system
    Photoshop CC 64, Bridge CC 64, Windows 7 64bit
Preferences->File Saving Options-> Image Previews is Always Save
    Any other suggestions?

This doesn't seem to solve the problem as the new file also does not show a preview image.
    Puzzling indeed!
I did notice, however, that most metadata also appeared to be gone (bridge reported no color profile,
or pixel dimensions for example).  This suggested an alternative approach.  I opened the original .dng
file again and then copied the layers from the damaged .psd per this suggestion.  When saved, there was
a preview!  However, it was only a preview of the base conversion.  No matter what layers are visible when
the file is saved, the preview doesn't change.  Still not right.  I hesitate to continue to work with an obviously
    corrupted file.

  • Safari 5 doesn't saves webpage preview images

Safari doesn't saves webpage preview images. It only save images for my Top Sites pages.
When I look in my history cover flow I only see blank Safari symbols (except history from my Top Sites webpages)
Well I really want to see full cover flow.
    How can I fix this?
By the way, the Reader feature really cool and very useful.

By the way, I finally gets history to be saved. It fixed by Safari 5.
Yes, I saw your post on that one ... at least some incremental progress is being made ...
There's an area of Discussions (available only to the level 4 or 5 users) where we can post information about trouble we see out in the "public" forums ("Notable New Technical Issues"). I've been updating a thread on this issue with your progress so far with this. (I'm not sure if the Safari developers watch that though ... but just in case, I've been stashing info about this there.)
In the meantime, it's probably worth submitting a bug report via the "Help > Report Bugs to Apple" or the Apple Bug Reporter thing (if you've registered as an Apple Developer).
