Saving InDesign files as HTML

URGENT!
Hi,
I need to set up and save documents in ID and save them as HTML to be used in email so that all elements - text boxes, text, pics, positions, styles etc - are retained and not lost.
Surely this must be easy?
I can't get it to work when I EXPORT as HTML. what am I missing?
I appreciate your swift help
Matt B

As the others have mentioned, this will never produce the desired result for email marketing. I think John covered this but HTML email is a unique animal all by itself - it can challenge even the most seasoned web developer because you have to deal with different email clients and not browsers - email clients are far tricker to code for. You need to use tables, inline CSS and ensure the code is as clean as can be. Dreamweaver (or other HTML coder) is definitely the way to go - forget InDesign and instead use Photoshop for the images.
Peter's suggestion of Mail Chimp is a good one as they have a huge amount of ready made templates that have been tested in all these email clients - you just add the images and content. If you want to go it your own way, this would be a good place to start: http://htmlemailboilerplate.com/
For reference you can also check out: http://24ways.org/2009/rock-solid-html-emails/. If you do decide to do this, I would then travel over to the Dreamweaver forum and ask any further questions there.
Sorry. I'm sure this is not the answer you wanted.

How can convert 140 pages indesign file to HTML ?

What is the purpose of this exercise? If all you want is raw html just export for Dreamweaver. Good luck with the mess you'll wind up with.
With a document that large you should exporting small pieces.

  • Does the DPS publishes only for tablets? can I publish my indesign file to html only using DPS?

Does the Digital Publishing Suite publishes only for tablets?  can I publish my indesign file to html only using DPS?

DPS will not do what you want and neither with anything else without at
    least some work.
HTML out of InDesign is for content only, not layout. There is a new
product out there you can try, however:

  • Saving InDesign files with embedded preview on server

When I save my InDesign files on my internal hard drive, the preview shows up just fine.
But when I save on my work´s server, the preview dissapears.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I could have sworn that explorer generated its own thumbnail from a tiff image. If I am right then I would say that either the file is actually another format that your program is capable of reading but explorer is not but was renamed to the tiff extention.
Or something happened to the association of the tiff extention.
Something else to check, when exporting the tiff image try an uncompressed version and make sure the byte order is for IBM PC.
I also think image pyramid is not supported (though I am not totally sure what that is, lol.)
One other thing to check, your folder make sure it is not read only and you have enough drive space. These you probably already know, but explorer needs to create a file in that folder that holds the thumbnails.
    Hopefully something above will help...

  • Saved InDesign files have blank thumbnails

Ever since I updated to InDesign CC 14, and uninstalled CS6 and CC, the thumbnails of all my saved files are now blank. Also when I click on file in Folder to open it, a dialogue box with the following message pops up:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Sounds like you are running under Windows.
InDesign has had a bug for over 10 years (if not longer) wherein if you install a new version and then delete any previous version, you lose file associations. A fix is supposed in the works.
To repair your file associations you must total uninstall InDesign 10 (CC 2014) and then reinstall it.
Yes, this is a royal pain in the tuchas!

  • Help!  InDesign file to HTML for email

Yes, I know, I do everything with InDesign and have successfully for years.  When I had to design an email blast, I designed it in InDesign, and sent it to a company to convert it to html for me, and then they sent it out with our list as a blast.
My new company, does everything internally, and wants me to do a email blast, and they're real cheap on sending anything to a vendor for help.  I don't work at all in DreamWeaver, and know nothing about html.
Is there any 'easy' way to take a document in Indesign and get it into html, or something suitable for an email blast?????  Or save it in such a way, it can be brought into Constant Contact?????  Arghhhhhhh......

The best advice I can give you is to use Constant Contacts free HTML email templates: http://www.constantcontact.com/email-marketing/html-email-templates/index.jsp
These templates are easy enough to edit and have a foundation already set for email clients. Typically they will be constructed in tables with inline CSS. Constant Contact also have basic templates without any design: http://www.constantcontact.com/email-marketing/html-email-templates/basic.jsp
Using InDesign for this job is really not the way to go. In fact, using any graphic application other than an HTML editor is only going to give you a headache. If this is going to become a regular thing in your job, start learning HTML and make your life that little bit easier. There are a vast amount of resources available online to help you get the basics down.
@2. timm.hughes, don't even go down that road!

I am in the middle of a job using CS 6, but at the same time opening the Creative Suite apps.  I created an InDesign file in CS 6, saved it, and now I can't open it. I'm getting this message: Cannot open file because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC (10.1). You must use that version or later to open the file." AARRGGHH! So how do I access the file?

Sounds like you opened and saved it in CC, so now you need to go back to CC and either complete the project there, or export to IDML to take it back into CS6.

If you are using Mac, press Apple + I to get the information. It show a table. There is a section call Open with. Change the file with pdf icon to open with indesign. If using PC, just click on the second button on the mouse and open with Indesign.

  • InDesign file saving and exporting S-L-O-W.

I am a designer using the InDesign/InCopy layout workflow. After my last post things were working pretty good for awhile. But now it is taking more than an hour to save over the network. I tried putting everything in the same folder on the network (links and all) and it still took me more than an hour just to relink a placed InCopy story. I am going mad. A week overdue for my first draft and I can't do anything. So today I decided to just  use the package workflow to speed things up. However it still takes as long to create assignments even after I have saved the InDesign file and links to my desktop.
Is there any possibility this is caused by using the last document and saving as new name? Even if I have unlinked all assignments and stories first?
I've tried saving as an inx file but I lock up.
Thanks for your help in advance,
    Holly

It turns out that is the issue. AnneMarie, were you able to find the other thread? I thought my problem was solved by deleting the random 40,000+ lines of garbage using a text edit program. But the random lines are re-generated each time I save the file in indesign. My IT Manager thinks it has to do with the InCopy plugin. In analyzing the 'garbage lines', here is what we do know. Each time a body of text is saved using the InCopy plugin, it is generating 62 unique id's of random URLs, and multiplies those id's 657 times...thus creating 40,000+ lines of garbage that bogs down the file. The urls are not used anywhere in my Indesign file, so we can't figure how the plugin is gaining access to the URLs to generate them.
We tested it on a brand new block of text in the file that had never been exported as an Incopy file (working off the desktop the whole time) - and the resulting .icml file still had similar URLs generated (all 40,000+). The plugin version is 6.0.0.352. Indesign Application version is CS4 6.0.4.578. Here is one URL pulled from the file: <HyperlinkURLDestination Self="u54e9" Name="URL 275" DestinationURL="http://www.evanta.com/details_popup.php?cmd=speaker&id=6963" Hidden="false" DestinationUniqueKey="694"/>
Any ideas on how to stop the URLs from generating each time I have to save the file?

  • I saved web page as html file, but can't open saved file as web page

I did a FILE, SAVE PAGE AS, then chose 'WEB PAGE COMPLETE' - and a directory is created on my hard drive - with the directory name, for example - "c:\....\Ask a Question _ Mozilla Support.htm". (for this web page).
When I try to open the saved web page from Firefox, using FILE, OPEN, I see a new window that looks like a file manager window, I then select that saved .html file and click OPEN, and a new window opens that looks like file manager - displaying with all the files in that directory - "Ask a Question _ Mozilla Support.htm". That is, it does not open and dislpay the web page as I expect it should (that I saved earlier).
However, if I go to the file manager, I can see that directory is saved, and has the Windows Explorer icon associated with the directory "ask a question ....html", and also has a file type of HTML listed. If I double click that directory in file manager, Windows Explorer will open that directory and dis[play it as a web page, as I expected.
I would like to know why Firefox does not open the directory name as a web page from the FILE, OPEN command, but instead shows me the directory contents(all the files in that directory)?
BTW, if I try FILE, OPEN, using Windows Explorer the same thing happens - it opens a new window listing all the files in that directory.
Is this the way the FILE, OPEN is supposed to work?
It seems confusing, because if I am in any other program, for example WinWord, and do a FILE, OPEN command on a Word file, it opens the file as a Word Document - it does not just show the file in a "file manager window.
But when I click FILE, OPEN on an HTML file(directory using Firefox, it does not open that html directory as a web page?

I am in the Windows Explorer 'Details' view, and I see the folder with 'Type' of FILE FOLDER. In that folder are all the .js and .css and .png files - as cor-el said.
''But now I also see'' that there is also an htm file - ''with the exact same name ''as the folder, but it has a 'Type' of 'HTML Document'. When I have Firefox do a File, Open on the HTML Document - it does open the web page that I saved and does display it as a web page.
I did not realize that Firefox saves both:
    1) a Directory '''(Type 'File Folder') '''''', and,
    2) an html file''' (Type 'HTML Document')
... '''and that they are the exact same names! '''
I was clicking on the wrong one! Instead of clicking in the .html file, I was incorrectly clicking on the folder!
(The archive add on looks interesting, but shouldn't I be able to open the saved web page, from the browser, using File, Open File) ?

  • Newbie question: saving jpeg files in indesign document

    hi there,
i'm rather new to indesign and i can't get this thing to work:
whenever i place a jpeg image (or for that matter, any other image format) into an indesign document and later move
the jpeg file to a different location on my harddrive and then reopen the indesign file, the image is all pixeled. it seems like the image
isn't saved inside the .indesign file, but is more of a referal to the file on my hard disk.
is it possible to embed external files (like jpeg) into the actual indesign document and save them within this document?
i'd be gracious for any help.

Grant's answers are correct. You SHOULD use linked images and you should update them on the Links panel.
There are specialized reasons it might be necessary to embed an image, but in general it's not a good idea: (1) It makes the files unnecessarily large, (2) if you make changes in the image, it can be updated in the InDesign file.

  • Cannot open InDesign files on Mac that were saved on PC

I subscribe to Create Suite and have it installed on both my Mac and PC. So, they should both be the most current version, right? All updates are current.
A few (not all) InDesign files that were created/saved on a PC will not open up on my Mac. I get this message:
Cannot open [file name] because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC (10.0).
You must use that version or later to open the file. To then enable it to be opened in these version, choose Save As InDesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML.
"Save As InDesign CS4" actually has IDML in parenthesis, so it's all one option. When I bring the file over to my mac, it doesn't open properly (for example all the images are gone).
Could it be possible that there is a newer version of InDesign only for my PC and my Mac can't open those files? Seems ridiculous.

You would have no problem opening a file in version 10.0 if it was saved in 10.1, just as you would have no problem opening any other version dot release file in ay dot release of that version.
The problem here is the PC was updated to CC2014 and the Mac was not.
The OP also mentioned missing pictures when using IDML. IDML removes the previews, but you would need the linked images in any case for output, regardless of whether  you use .indd or IDML to move the file.

  • Saving InDesign CS4 files for InDesign CS2

I'm about to upgrade from CS3 to CS4 but have a client who needs to open documents I create InDesign CS2. I've been saving files for this clients in CS3's interchange (.inx) format, which has worked fine. But CS4 .inx files will only open in CS3. One work around I found was on TUAW (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/08/tuaw-tip-saving-indesign-cs4-files-for-indesign-cs2/), which suggests opening the .inx file in a text editor and changing the version number. The resulting file should then open in CS4. I was wondering if anyone has tried this (with or without success) or has any advice on saving CS4 docs for CS2? Thanks very much!

I'll go with option 3 since I no longer have CS2 on my machine and my
client won't be upgrading anytime soon. Thanks for the help and great
    advice.
I'd never use this workflow if I couldn't test it on CS2 before sending it off to the client. Don't know what to tell you here... good luck?
Me, harsh? Is that my rep?
Oh, come on. I can say it another way:
"Peter's going to be way too nice about this... DON'T DO IT."

  • Embedding HTML file in folio causes other indesign files to be embedded into article

For our upcoming issue we have the following files:
    COVER_Apr.indd
    COVER_horz.indd
    Calendar_Apr.indd
    Chef_Tournedos.indd
    Home_hybrid.indd
    Kristen_Campo.indd
    List_April.indd
    Look_Back.indd
    Masthead_Apr.indd
    Pam_Sherman_Touch.indd
    Review_Lucano.indd
    Shop_talk_ChicFeet.indd
    Short_festival.indd
    Showtime.indd
    SotH_Fondue.indd
    TOC_Apr.indd
    Taste_Test_Caesar.indd
    editors_letter.indd
    editors_letter_embed.html
When adding editors_letter.indd to a folio, (which uses a web content overlay of editors_letter_embed.html) inside of it, it seems that the other indesign files are added inside the article causing it to be nearly 40Mb. (I can tell this is happening because when updating the article it says
    Adding File ...TOC_Apr.indd
    Adding File... Shop_talk_ChicFeed.indd
    ..etc
If I remove the web content overlay, it is much smaller. (The total folio size)

Made a subfolder inside current folder and it seems to NOT add the other files now.

  • How to import a PSD file into Indesign WITH layers so it can be edited/saved as an InDesign file?

How to import a Photoshop file into Indesign CS6 so that it's layers show in InDesign and it can then be edited/saved as an InDesign file?

    MyTienN wrote:
Someone had mentioned the possibility of saving each individual layer in Photoshop as a png file and importing into Indesign and adjusting it in there
What do you mean by "adjust"? Editing of Photoshop images should be done in Photoshop.
Sure, it's possible to save individual layers from an image in Photoshop as inidvidual files in a variety of formats, but what's the point? You could just as easily import the layered file, then copy/paste it into a new layer for each layer in the image and use layer visibility to control which ones show. I don't think that will do you a lot of good, though, if you use adjustment layers or opacity controls on the layer in Photoshop.
