Saving Indy file to earlier version

Hi,
I have CS3 and would like to share Indesign files with soemone who has CS2 - can I save back to an earlier version, or can they do anything that would enable them to open the file?
Sally

Export your document as INX (InDesign Interchange) and provide that
along with all of your linked file.
The CS2 use MUST be fully patched to 4.0.5. The text if very likely to
reflow, any new features in CS3 will be lost (text variables) or badly
mangled (number/bullet lists).
Not recommended for collaborative workflow.

  • Saving FrameMaker files in earlier version

I created files using Unstructured FrameMaker 11. Our customer has FrameMaker 10. I saved the FrameMaker 11.0 files as Document 10 files (*.fm) and sent them to our customer. They are unable to open the Document 10 files. How do i resolve this issue?

Save them in MIF format to *.mif. That's the main purpose of MIF.
Use the highest version of MIF available to you (i.e. NOT FM 7).
If you are using any features added at FM11, your FM10 recipient will lose them, but they will be able to open the files.
if you ever need to send to someone on a version earlier than FM8, there is another potential issue with the text content of the document (Unicode). That won't arise in an FM11->10 situation.

I installed the InDesign CC Testversion and now i try to open INDD-Files from earlier Version. Always i get the error "This file is made by an earlier Version...." but it´s CC that is the latest Version. What is the problem ? Should i have to convert the files ?

Adobe has been using confusing version names for at least five years.
There are now two versions labeled CC, version 9 and version 10 (also known as CC 2014). Version 10 is the latest, and if you attempt to open a version 10 file in Version 9 that is not fully patched you will get an error message telling you that the file cannot be opened. The latest patch for version 9 should use a cloud-based service at Adobe to convert version 10 files to IDML and allow you to open that.
I suspect you may be using an older operating system. Version 10 requires that your system runs at least OS X 10.7 or Windows 7 SP1 and if you are not it will not even be offered to you.

  • Reverting SWF files to earlier versions

I created an animated logo for a customer and discovered that
they use IE 6 which seems to be a problem with the newest version
of Flash as I can load the SWF file on local test server and it
works fine. How do I save to an earlier version of Flash?
thanks in advance for your help,
    steve

You can adjust the Flash player version you publish for in
the Flash section of the Publish Settings.
To actually save the file to an earlier Flash version, you
are normally limited to saving to only the previous version, so if
you have CS4 you can only save as far back as CS3. You use Save As
to do this, and selected the version in the file save interface. If
you need to save further bacvk, you need the preceding version
installed so you can then save it one more version back.
While I may be wrong, the use of IE6 shouldn't be the cause
for a problem. I would suspect the Flash player version is
    old.

  • Error message when opening CS6 files in earlier versions

    PSCS6 with 12.0.4 update.  Mac OSX 10.8.2   16GB 1333 Mhz DDR3  543 GB Available
I've recently become aware that other people are getting an error message when opening many of my my psd files if they are on earlier versions of PS and also on PSE, (including the latest version).  The message is:
This document contains unknown data which will be discarded to keep layers editable.  To preserve the original appearance instead, choose flatten to load composite data as a flattened image.
Three options follow:  Flatten  Cancel  Keep Layers
When 'keep layers' is selected the file opens as normal.  However, people with much earlier version (CS version 8) don't get the option to keep layers, and the layers are flattened when the document is opened.
I still have CS5 on my mac, and I find that if I take my finished file into CS5 and save it there, the customer does not get the message above, and the file behaves as it should.  Those on very early version of PS can also open the files without any issues.
I've been using CS6 since it was released and have had to delve through all my files and save them in CS5.  Not every file is affected and I've been unable to find a common thread.
Hoping someone can throw some light on this.

This similar to the message one should get in an older version of photoshop such as photoshop 7.
If one presses ok instead of read composite that might preserve the layers with the original look.
But sometimes if a layer blending mode or some other feature is used an earlier versions of photoshop doesn't have, reading the composite is the only way to preserve the look of the image.
You said your using shape layers?
If they are shape layers you didn't use a stroke from the tool options bar?
Can you post an example of the image with the layers panel visible that you get that message with?
I guess your using photoshop cs6 with the 13.01 update?

  • FAQ: How do I migrate my saved presets from an earlier version of Photoshop or import/export them?

You now have the option to migrate presets from a previous version, export presets and to save to a directory as a zip file (great for instructors).
Preset Migration migrates your saved presets, not your preferences. The message says "Would you like to migrate presets from the following versions?"  It simply carries on the preset files you have already saved (things like Brush Tips, HDR Toning presets, Curve presets, Styles etc.)  to CS6.
HOW TO USE PHOTOSHOP CS6 AUTOMATED PRESET MIGRATION
Photoshop CS6 offers the great new functionality of automated preset migration for your custom presets from Photoshop versions as far back as CS3.
When Photoshop CS6 launches for the first time, it checks for previous installations of Photoshop on the computer to see if there are custom presets that need to be migrated. Photoshop looks in each of these presets folders for your saved custom preset files that it can migrate.
Preset migration script copies all the files in user preset folders of older versions. If there are more than one preset files with the same name, presets from the newer version will be given priority. These types of presets will be migrated by the script:
3DLUTs, Actions, Black and White, Brushes, Channel Mixer, Color Books, Color Swatches, Contours, Curves, Custom Shapes, Deco, Duotones, Exposure, Flash 3D, Gradients, HDR Toning, Hue and Saturation, Levels, Lighting Effects, Lights, Materials, Meshes, Optimized Colors, Optimized Output Settings, Optimized Settings, Patterns, Render Settings, Repousse, Scripts, Styles, Tools, Video, Volumes, Widgets, Zoomify, and Workspaces
If this is not your first launch and you would like Photoshop to look for presets,
Choose Edit > Presets > Migrate Presets
When Photoshop notices that you have custom presets saved in their appropriate folders it will give the message "Would you like to migrate presets from the following versions?"
Choose Yes. Photoshop will begin the preset migration script.
When the migration has completed Photoshop will pop up another message saying:
"Preset files from older versions successfully migrated"
In order to use your newly migrated presets, you must restart Photoshop.
If you had Photoshop CS6 beta installed and have saved custom presets, you will need to export those presets before uninstalling the previous version and installing the release version of Photoshop CS6.
    HOW TO SAVE PRESETS
For PS, check that you have saved all your presets using:
Edit>Preset Manager... (in previous versions) Edit>Presets>Preset Manager... (in CS6)
HOW TO IMPORT AND EXPORT PRESETS
    In the main PS menu,
    Choose Edit > Presets > Export/Import Presets
In this dialog you can export the presets and then import them when you load the new version using the same Export/Import dialog.
If you have gone through the automated preset migration and notice that some of your presets didn't get migrated with the rest, make sure you have exported your presets to their default folders.
    PRESET FILE LOCATIONS:
(Note that there are two different folder locations for presets, one for application provided default presets, and one for user created preset files)
These are the presets that are unique to each user on the computer. These can be migrated automatically: (this is the location that the user should save their personal presets in)
    Windows:  Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Presets
    Mac:  Users/[Username]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Presets
These are the default presets that ship with Photoshop.  These presets can be imported but will not copy over using the migrate feature because each version of Photoshop will install defaults for that version.

Do you have an  iPhoto Library from the old machine? If you have then simply open it - there's no importing involved.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
If you don't have an actual library there is no way to do what you want.

  • How do I save Acrobat X file as earlier version?

I'm using Acrobat 10 pro to collate a number of docs including video into 1 pdf.
I want to allow my site members to rebrand the pdf with their affiliate links - set up as http://site.com/xxxAFFIDxx
But, Acrobat 10 encrypts the link and therefore it cannot be rebranded using my normal rebrander.
If I create a pdf using the Microsoft Word link I have the option of saving as an earlier version - say pdf 1.3 onwards. These are rebrandable but I obviously cannot collate a number of pdfs using word.
I believe the issue is the encyption but as hard as I've looked I cannot find what I need to change to enable me to do what I want.
    Any guidance much appreciated

Thank you so much. I was trying to save the original as an older version rather than saving as a latest version and then making it compatible.

  • Opening textedit files in earlier versions of textedit . . . .

my son has a Mac Mini with 10.3. he took the project he has been working on at home to school, and worked on it on one of the macs there. the files that came back are now unopenable on his machine. i assume the machines at school are a later version of OSX.
what changed? how can he save them at school so he can read them on the machine at home? they are .rtfd format.
    thanx.

I'm surprised that Panther's textedit can't read .rtfd files.
oh,it did. in fact, it allowed him to embed images in the file. it was after he opened them, worked on them, and saved them on the mac's at school, where the issue surfaced.
i can open the files on my ibook running 10.5.X. is there a way i can save them in a format he can read?
    thanx.

  • InDesign CS6 can't read EPS files from earlier version of InDesign

I have a series of six violin method books (Kaleidoscopes for Violin) that I created in InDesign CS2.
Having now upgraded to InDesign CS6, all of the EPS files used in these books -- hundreds and hundreds of files -- are unreadable by the program.  I receive the error message, "Error encountered while reading TIFF image. Image may be damaged or incompatible. Resave the image with different settings and try again."
Another user, ratgui, reported this problem on February 2, 2013 (two months ago) and has received no response.  This user's files are also music files, imported from InDesign CS4 (more recent than mine).
Needless to say, there is nothing wrong with my EPS files, given that every single one of them was read correctly (and is still read correctly) by the older, supposedly less-advanced version of InDesign!  The only work-around currently is to save each image in PNG format (luckily Sibelius exports to PNG).  For 600-800 files, this represents three or four full days of unnecessary work, and will double the number of images on my hard drive.
The EPS issue is a remarkably serious flaw in a software package that costs many hundreds of dollars, especially given that I posted the same problem in response to the release of InDesign CS5.  A response (and, I daresay, a software update that fixes the problem) would be greatly appreciated.
As a side note to the developers -- it is super, duper cumbersome that this error arises in a separate pop-up box for EVERY affected image.  These pop-up boxes must be dismissed one at a time.  Worse yet, once you have dismissed the error message for a given image, the message appears AGAIN if you return to the same page!!  This unnecessary hassle makes it impossible to even work with the underlying document.  Placing the error message in the links palette would save a great deal of headache.  It is fairly obvious that the images aren't being read properly ... they all appears as gray boxes.
    Thanks!!

    Hi Peter
Many thanks for your advice; I re-defined the printer presets and now it works fine.

  • Importing edited/saved Garageband instruments from earlier version

I am wondering how to import the old instruments I created on a previous version of Garageband in GB '09, since it doesn't seem that the new version works from a Library. I have the .cst files in a library file that I named "GarageBand," (with the Master/Real/Software sub-folders) but no idea how to get GB to read these.

I don't know what you mean by "it doesn't seem that the new version works from a Library" - but GB sure uses the instruments in the Libary folders, both in your user Library and in the general Library folder. Your presets have to go into the proper subfolders in User/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library. Or in the HD/Library... folder, then they are available for all users.

  • With CS6, can I save down to earlier versions?

If i purchase a license to CS6, will i be able to save down to earlier versions of CS or even just be able to open the CS6 files with earlier versions of CS (indesign, photoshop, illustrator...)??

Great, thank you.  Do you know if i would be able to open CS6 files with earlier versions of the suite, specifically CS5 & CS2 (indesign, photoshop, illustrator...)?

  • Possible to access earlier versions of a saved PDF file?

Hi, I have a Macbook 10.6.8.  I was having some issues with Preview so I was using a trial version of Wondershare PDF Editor to make some edits on a PDF.  After saving my work, however, it stamped a big watermark onto each page of the PDF, making a part of each page difficult to read.  Opening up the PDF in another program does not make the watermark go away.  I only have one copy of the PDF and would like to revert back to an earlier version without the watermark.  According to Wondershare, the only way to remove the watermark is to purchase the program, which I don't want to do.  Does my Mac allow me to access earlier versions of a saved file?
    Thanks!

Hmm!!!  You know what, I do have an old version!!  However, the PDF I want already has edits from Preview on 100+ pages.  The version on Time Machine is completely blank without any edits.  I guess the blank is better than nothing so if I don't find any other answer, I'll do that.  Thanks!!

  • Cannot open CC, indd files saved in an earlier versions in CS6

When attempting to open CC files inside of version CS6 that have been saved by students in version CS4 and later, I get the following message" Cannot open "fileName.indd" because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe  InDesign (CS7.0) You must use tht version or later to open the file... How can I open these files? I also get plugin messages.

That's weird. But I guess they didn't properly Exported the file into an .idml file. Save As is different from File -> Export to idml
If your student did just File -> Save As, thinking that Save As works just like MS Word that saving it will work with backward compatibility to a lower version of InDesign then probably it won't work.
However, just ask them to Re-Export the file to .idml and see if you can open it in your InDesign CS6.

  • Saving a project as a file for an earlier version of Garageband

Is it possible to save a garageband file as a file for an earlier version of garageband in garageband '06, and if so, how would i do this?

You're in the GB 08 forum, but anyway, it's the same answer. once you save a file in a newer version, you can no longer open it in an older version.
