Saving/Installing Older Versions of Apps?

Hey gang-
As my app collection grows both in size and dollar value, I've started to become concerned about retaining earlier versions of some of my favorite or most work-critical apps. I say this because some recent updates to some of my apps have not been for the better- i.e. features removed, or broken, or the interface "improved" (i.e. ruined), or bloating creeping feature-itis, or you name it. And in many cases, it isn't apparent until you've installed or tried the new version that it is a step backward.
So, is there any way in iTunes to save multiple versions of apps? And if you discover that a newer version is a clunker, is there a way to re-install the earlier version?
Thanks!
Dave

No.

No.
Interesting. And surprising. Certainly in Desktop computing, we can always delete and re-install an earlier version of an app assuming we've saved its installer .dmg, or CD or whatever (which the wise user always does.)
Now, in a world of free or 99 cent iPhone apps, I guess this isn't that big a deal. But as the number of more costly professional and enterprise apps grows, I think we will find that workflows cannot come to a halt just because a developer released a clunker update. Again, in Desktop computing, we'd simply re-install the previous version.
Perhaps some enterprising developer can come up with an "iTunes App Manager" or something like that.

  • How to install older version of app to ipod touch 2g (os 4.1)??

I have an ipod touch 2nd generation, and as I can see that updating it beyond os 4.1 isn't an option, I would like to get back some of the older versions of apps that now are updated on my itunes and cannot be put on my ipod. Please help me access older versions of apps or find some other way of putting these apps on my ipod touch 2ng generation.

There isn't an Apple-supported way of downgrading app versions for use on an old iPod touch.  You'll have to get an iPod touch 5th gen.

  • How do i install older versions of apps on an older iPhone that has been updated to latest version it supports?

how do i install an older compatible version of pandora?  I have an older 3G iphone i want to stream music from. OS is 4.2.1 and basically nothing installs and the OS will not upgrade past that OS version.

    You could try this.
On your PC - download the latest version of the App.
Once downloaded, select the App for syncing to your Phone.
You will get a message saying it is not compatible.
If you are lucky it may offer a previous version as an alternative.
Worth a try.  It has worked on several apps on my old version 2 iPod.

Only if you can restore those apps from an PC backup of your iTunes. If you did not include the iTunes library in your PC backup routine, you can't install older versions of apps again.

  • Install older versions of my purchased Apps on iPhone 4

Will I be always able to install older versions of my purchased Apps on iPhone 4, forever, even if I do not ever upgrade the IOS? I am using iPhone 4 with IOS 5.1 at present. I want to install my purchases from App Store and not have to worry about saving previous vesions of my apps in iTunes. It is important for me to fully understand the rescrictions imposed by Apple platforms, before I invest.

On your device, check Settings>General>Software Update. Since you are still on iOS 6.x.x, you should have a software update available to you (iOS 7.x.x). Normally, you will see a "Download and Install button with the size of the download being displayed. However, if you see a "Downloaded" with an "Install" button, you have graciously been given a gift by Apple. They have downloaded the iOS 7 update for you automatically which is now using up to 3.1 GB of your memory to sit on the device, even if you DO NOT want to install it. There is also no way to delete it (aside from pressing the Install button).

    Hey Nathan,
I know it can be a bit frustrating to try to get a version of an application that will work on an older iOS version. This article explains how to do it -

  • Install an older version of app into iPhone

Hi, I have an older version of an app installed in my iTunes.
How do I install that into my iphone without messing up the organization of the apps, or syncing every app with the settings in the iTunes? This issue is driving me nuts. All I want to do is, add the older version of app into my iPhone without changing any other thing.
Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.
    I'm using iPhone 4, with the latest iOS 5. (i think it's iOS 5.1)

and by clicking "syncing", 64 of my apps got deleted from my iphone. Most of them are paid apps, and I don't even know what are gone. Why is Apple making syncing stuff so difficult and user unfriendly?

  • My app store won't let me download none of the older versions of apps for my ipod touch 2g.

My app store won't let me download any of the older versions of an app, but in my sisters case she can and she has an ipod touch 2g just like me. She was able to download kik, twitter, instagram, and some more apps that told me I had to have ios 4.3.1 or higher to download. and theres only one app I want and its kik, can someone help me figure out whats wrong with my app store, it would be a great help.

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • I have an older iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1 which can no longer be updated. Is there a way to download older versions of apps that will run on this device? I am particularly interested in an older version of Minecraft PE. Thanks!

Is there some way to download older versions of games that will run in an iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1? I want to give my old device to a child who recently went through a hard time and his device was damaged. It is no use if it only has music on it. Thanks!

To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.

  • Install old version of apps

    Hi
I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch, and as such, I can only update it to 4.2.1. The problem is that now most of the apps in the AppStore tell me to get newr versions of the iOS, wich I can't. Is there any way to install older versions of the apps, compatible with my iPod?
    Thanks

Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

  • Installing older versions (4&6) of firefox for compatability testing

I need to install older versions of FF in order to do compatibility testing against a web app.
When I look at the index of versions available at http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/ I see nothing for version 4 of firefox. What gives? Where can I find the files to install that version. Ditto for version 6

releases.mozilla.org generally just has the most recent updates to each major release; ftp.mozilla.org has every version ever released:

  • Older version of apps under iCloud?

As I understand iCloud does not physically stores apps from my iOS device, but is able to get them for me if I need them to restore.
What happens if iCloud won't have an app version compatible with my iOS (e.g. when my iOS will be outdated)?
Is iCloud obtaining apps from AppStore? Does it have a separate database where it keeps all older versions of apps??

    Anyone?
