Saving iPhoto photos on a Flash Drive

Hi, I want to save all the photos that I have in iPhoto now on a Flash Drive. Because these photos are going to be straight from the camera, they are going to be very large. Do you recommend that I crop and size each one before saving? some are paintings, and I would want to save them on my computer as large files for printing on Giclees. Those specific photos I could save to Desktop, open in Photoshop and save them in a picture file on computer. But the rest of the photos don't have to be large as most are reference or snapshots. Question is, do I resize them and then drag them to the FlashDrive window? Thanks for any help available. I also need info on the entire lot of photos that are imported at this time in iPhoto, to know how much space they will take up in the Flash Drive.

  • How do I download photos onto a flash drive in the order they appear in my iPhoto folder?

How do I burn/copy photos onto a flash drive and keep the photos in the same order they appear in iPhoto folder?  I have iphoto'11  9.1.3

There are two ways. First put them in the order you want in an album.
    Method 1:
1 - rename the album the photos are in to something that will work as a file name for the photos.
2 - export photos to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export
menu option with File Name = Album Name with number.
    Method 2:
1 - select the photos in the album and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text
menu option to rename the photos and add a sequential number to the end of the file name.
2 - export photos to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export
menu option with the option File Name use Title

  • How do I move photo's from an IPhoto album to a flash drive stick?

I Need to know how to move photo's from a IPhoto album to a flash drive stick. Also how do I make sure the stick is formatted and blank

ALbums in iPhoto have manul sorting. When you export from iPhoto you send the files to the Finder and that doesn't. It can sort in many ways, but perhaps the most usual is by name. So, rename the photos and then export them using the title as filename or the album name and number or even Sequential.
When you go File -> Export note the option at the bottom of the Export dialogue:

  • Trouble exporting photos from iPhoto directly to a flash drive

    Hi,
When I exported 7 photos from my iPhoto library, all marked JPEG, directly to my 256MB Memorex flash drive (first time of usage), a strange thing happened. When I opened the flash drive on my computer, 5 photos showed up visually showing the image and two showed up as Generic JPEG icons.
The 5, (from info) were now marked Unix Executable File and the 2 Generics (from info) were marked JPEG.
In going to Target, then CVS Drugs and then Walgreens to have prints made, all their machines showed no images available.
All the images were taken on an HP photosmart 435, 3.1 MP digital camera.
Fortunately, all the images were still on the camera media and they then printed out very well when I returned to Target with the camera media
Many thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi captaindad,
I had a similar problem using a flash drive using iPhoto on a Mac and PS on a PC... when I first plugged in the Flash Drive in the PC, most images appeared but not all. I kept refreshing the window and all eventually appeared.
Now, I just drag and copy from iPhoto directly to my flash drive and all seems to be working smoother using this method rather than the export option, also doing it this way always ends up with an Image Thumbnail v. Generic JPEG icon... Rick

It sounds like your iPhoto Advanced preferences are set to not copy photos during import, i.e. a Referenced library:
Check your Advanced preferences to see if that's the case. If it is the best solution would be to select the checkbox to copy the photos and reimport the photos from the flash drive.  Then check the new import. It it was OK you can delete the previous event with the "missing" photos.

  • How to copy iphoto picture library to flash drive?

How can I copy all the pictures in iphoto to a flash drive?

    you ask two different questions
do you want to copy the iPHoto library to a flash drive? If so then format the flash drive Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library to it
    Or
do you want to copy all of your photos from the iPhoto library to a flash drive? If so select them all in iPhoto and export to a desktop folder (see the user tip on exporting for details on the available options), mount the Flash drive and drag that folder to it

  • The pictures of various trips on my iPhoto library to separate flash drives such that I could put on a slide show for each trip.  How can I do that?

I want to copy the pictures of various trips on my iPhoto library onto separate flash drives such as I could do slide show on each trip. How could I do that?

Now if there any way for me to put a caption on each slide?
    Your welcome.
You want the caption written directly into the photo?
Since you are exporting from iPhoto, you could download the BorderFX plug-in, if your mac is compatible with this plug-in.  It will allow you to write the titles or dates you are seeing in iPhoto directly onto the border.
You can download BorderFX here:  BorderFX - iBorderFX iPhoto
If BorderFX is not compatible, use any photo ditor, that suports graphics, like Photoshop, Previews, to write into the photo.

  • IPhoto problem with external flash drive

I'm trying to transfer some pictures from IPhoto to my external flash drive but it won't allow me to.

    Hi jschmidt33,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Try following along with the article below, if you follow those steps you should be able to save photos to your external drive or any other folder on your computer's internal drive.
    iPhoto '11: Export a photo
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2438
When you email, print, publish, or export a photo from your iPhoto library, iPhoto asks you to choose the size, also known as resolution. The settings you choose depend on what you want to do with the photo.
To change a photo’s size or file format, you export the photo. You might want to export photos so that you can import them into another application.
    To export photos:
Select the photo or photos you want to export.
    Choose File > Export.
At the top of the Export Photos window, click the File Export button.
To specify the file type for the exported photo, choose an option from the Kind pop-up menu:Original: Exports the photo as it was originally imported into iPhoto, before editing.Current: Exports the photo in its current format. If you imported a RAW-format photo and then edited it in iPhoto, the photo is exported as a JPEG file.JPEG: If you choose this format, choose an option from the JPEG Quality pop-up menu. The higher the quality, the bigger the photo. For example, if the photo will be used on a website where optimal quality for printing isn’t required, you could choose Low to save storage space on the website.TIFF: A lossless file format that works well for transferring photos between computers and applications.PNG: Another lossless file format popular for web images.
To change the size (resolution), choose an option from the Size pop-up menu:
For photos to be emailed or mainly viewed onscreen, these settings compress the photos (making them smaller):
Small: Use for photos you email or publish to websites where you don’t expect anyone to download and print your photos.
Medium: Use when you or your recipients have a reasonably fast Internet connection, such as DSL. This setting is not suitable for making prints.
Large: Use this setting when you and your recipients have a very fast connection. This size can be used to print small to standard-size photos (2 by 3, 3 by 5, and 4 by 6 inches).
For photos to be printed or published for download, these settings provide maximum detail for final prints:
Optimized: Use for larger prints and for publishing photos to websites for others to download and print. With this setting, photos are slightly compressed to a smaller file size so that they download faster without compromising quality.
Actual Size/Full Size: Use to make high-quality prints in small to large sizes, or to upload photos to websites so that others can download and print them. This setting matches the actual size of your photo, so it may take longer to upload or download.
Specify your other options:Include checkboxes: If you choose JPEG or TIFF from the Kind pop-up menu, you can include titles, keywords, and location information with the exported photos by selecting the checkboxes.File Name: Choose whether to export photos in sequence, or by their filenames, iPhoto titles, or album name.Prefix for sequential: If you choose Sequential from the File Name pop-up menu, you can specify text to appear before each number (for example, Birthday01, Birthday02, and so on). This step is optional.
    Click Export.
Choose where to save the exported photo files, and then click OK.
iPhoto works best with JPEG files, the standard format for data compression of still pictures. If you experience problems working with a non-JPEG file in iPhoto, use a different image-editing application to convert the image to JPEG.
    Good luck!

  • Backing up  photos to a flash drive

How do I back up photos in i photo to a flash drive and still keep them in their various folders?
Can this indeed be done ? Or do I need an external hard drive for such a back up?
    Thanks.
    Indigo7

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If your library is small enough just drag the iPhoto Library package to the flash drive. That will backup your entire library and it's organizational structure.
If you just want the original files then open the iPhoto Library package and copy the Originals folder to the flash drive. That will give you your original files in folders representing each event in the library. However, you will not keep keywords, titles or descriptions.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

My assistant and I are using two Lightrooms (i.e. two serial numbers) and need to share between our two computers. I provide originals to her onto a flash drive. She tags them and returns them to me. I then copy the photos from her flash drive onto my computer and load them in my LR. The photos appear but witthout any editing or tagging. We need to be able to have her working on the photos on her computer with her copy of LR and me on my computer with my version of LR being able to access what is already tagged and given back to me. This seems hard. We need advice on if it is at all possible to have two computers simultaneously working on LR . I bought her her own version because I was told at the time of purchasing that that was the only way to share. Please advise urgently! Thanks.

Sounds like your assistant isn't instructing Lightroom to write the tagging and editing to the files themselves, so wehn the files return to you, they don't have editing and tagging information. She need to select the photos in Lightroom and then Ctrl-S (Cmd-S on Mac). Or alternatively turn on the option to autmoatically write this information to the files.
If you are using RAW photos, then this information will be written to a sidecar XMP file, and your assistant must provide you with the sidecar file. If these photos are not RAW photos, then the information is written directly into the photo file itself.
Lightroom wasn't designed to be a multi-user program, and so it is truly not possible to have two people working on the same catalog at once. The way you are doing things, as modified above, is probably the way to go.
As an alternative, you can transfer (portions of) catalogs as well as photos back and forth and then all of these issues disappear, but a catalog might be rather large for a flash drive (or maybe not, it depends)

  • How do I transfer photos from one flash drive to another?

I downloaded  original photos to several flash drives before I had enhanced them. I realized I needed to do that before I gave them to my family.
In Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 I fixed the photos and now I want to put them on the same flash drives without distroying the originals. I would appreciate knowing how to transfer the new photos to the flash drives without replacing the originals.

You should really have left them in My Pictures. If you use Explorer to drag files you corrupt the file paths in Organizer and end up with missing files.
It would be best to get the originals from your family and put them and the edits back into My Pictures.
You can then make duplicates for your family using my method above.
Edit - if dragging directly to the flash drive made duplicates then you should still have all the photos in My Pictures
