Saving ipod library to reformat my computer? - need help

Hi,
I need to reformat my computer because of a virus, How can I save my itunes library so that the songs arent deleted, I have thousands on there and would not like to start from scratch.
I tried copying and pasting them into my external hard drive but it only copies a small portion of the library.
Can anyone help???

The easiest way is to just drag the entire iTunes folder (in My Documents -> My Music) to your external hard drive.

    Hey Babetta94,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After reviewing your post, the iPod is not recognized in iTunes. A frustrating situation to be sure. You haven't mentioned what OS the computer you are using uses. You can choose what article to use either OS X or Windows from this quoted section.

Have you failed to maintain a backup copy?
You should never update without making sure your backup copy of your computer is up to date.

  • How can I install my husbands iPod/library on the same computer that I have my iPod/library on? Can someone send me the step by step instructions? I was a windows computer. Thanks!

So we just got a new computer and I was able to successfully add my iPod/library to it. However when I tried to add my husbands iPod/library to the computer his library didn't show up. He is ony able to charge his iPod but cannot see his library. I tried adding another account/admin to my computer and download itunes with his ipod that way but it said there was another library and it couldn't access his library song list. His ipod is showing up on the left side however when I click on it there is nothing displaying. So my question to you or what I am trying to figure out is how can I get his ipod to show up with his library if he plugs in his ipod? Do I need to create a new account and if so how do I do it? I have a windows computer. Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to do this? He is going crazy not being able to access anything.
    Thanks!

  • How do I move my Ipod Library to a new computer?

So I have a new computer and my husband and I both have Ipod's. The new computer will reconize my ipod but it does not recognize my ipod library it keeps wanting me to switch my library to my husbands. Help!!

"The new computer will reconize my ipod but it does not recognize my ipod library it keeps wanting me to switch my library to my husbands"
I presume here that your husband currently has his music on the new computer and you are now trying to connect your iPod. If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. If you want to keep your existing songs on your iPod go to Edit>Preferences>iPod>Music tab and change the update setting to "manually manage songs and playlists"
There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update as described above: Managing Your Songs Manually
If you have no music on the computer then there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • Two ipods - one computer - Need help

I have had an ipod for a few months and my girlfriend just got one for Christmas. Neither have been registered. Now that she is trying to put songs on her ipod it is uploading all of the songs from mine onto hers. I don't know how to make it so that she has her own library without deleting all of my songs. Can two ipods be used on one computer? What should we do so that we can have two different libraries that won't interfere with the other? Is there a way to login to different itunes accounts on one computer instead of the same account opening through default when accessing itunes/library?

I have a Nano 2nd gen and recently purchased a 1GB shuffle. Using the link above I tried "method 3" to create a separate library. My problem is that when I clicked the advance button there was no general tab. Do I a newer version of itunes or something?

Some of the tools linked to will only work if the iPod has a valid library. Others can scan the drive independently and some may even be able to rebuild a damaged library. The manual method towards the end should be able to recover your media regardless of the state of the library.

  • How do i move my ipod library to a different computer?

I Recieved a laptop for christmas and i wish to move my ipod library to this computer. can somebody please help me?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can follow the instructions here...
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Or use something like YamiPod to move music directly from iPod to computer.
If most of your music is purchased (or all of it), you can use iTunes to transfer that purchased music to your new computer (iTunes will ask you).
Don't let iTunes erase what is on your iPod until all of the music in your iTunes library works (and test it without your iPod connected).

I have the exact same problem. Can't restore the shuffle because it doesn't show up in Finder or iTunes.
I have an iPod mini that is working just fine. I have the latest version of everything on a G5. Shuffle is off when I plug it in to computer and I've tried every port on the computer. Are there lemon shuffle 2nd generations out there? I've been giving them as gifts.

  • Ipod not working!!! NEED HELP!!!

my ipod keeps displaying the message "www.apple/support/ipod.com", it wont load up, my computer cant detect it and just before this happened, it started skipping through every song without playing anything. Windows XP

You Might want to try the FIVE R's and call Ipod Support...anyways goodluck!! and try frocing the ipod into disk mode to restore it back to normal! good luck and post back if this works
Open the iPod Software Updater application. It can be found by clicking on the Start menu, pointing to All Programs (Windows XP) or Programs (Windows 2000), and then point to iPod.
Select the iPod Updater showing the most recent date in the filename.
Connect your iPod to your Windows PC.
When it becomes available, click Restore. An alert box appears to confirm you want to restore iPod.
A progress bar appears on the computer screen.
When the restore process on the computer has finished, close the iPod Updater and look at the screen on the iPod.
If you see an image of a wall power plug, connect your iPod to the AC adapter that came with it and plug it into a wall outlet and wait for the restore to complete.
If you see a progress bar underneath the Apple logo, leave the iPod connected to the computer.
If you had to put iPod into Disk Mode before restoring, the iPod screen may display "OK to Disconnect" and you may need to reset iPod.
After the restore is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.
Before manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode you should verify that it has a charge, if not you need to either charge iPod before continuing or connect it to power. You can either connect it to a high-powered USB port, or plug the iPod Power Adapter into an electrical outlet and connect iPod to the power adapter.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"
If you are having difficulty putting an iPod model with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.
