Saving iTunes Music Before Reinstall

I am unable to launch iTunes - receive same message others have reported . . . that iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close, sorry for the inconvenience. Window sometimes refers to iTunes Helper Module but message is the same - has to close iTunes Helper.
I want to remove iTunes and reinstall to see if that will fix the problem but I want to be able to save all my existing music first, and then make it usable after the reinstallation.
Not sure how to do this and didn't want to take the chance and end up losing all the music. I'm sure this problem is a common situation.
Appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks

Depending on how much hard drive space/music you've got you could copy the iTunes Music folder to another location, such as your desktop or you could copy it to an external usb drive or you could use Windows to burn the file to disk ( data disk ).
Backups are always a good idea, iTunes will not let you re-download your music if you lose purchased files, even if they're not strictly needed for re-installing iTunes.

  • I reset my computer to orig manufacturers speifications and lost all my purchased Itune music before this year.  I've been a member for ten years.  Itunes does not have a record.  Is there anything else I can do to get them back.

I had to reboot my desktop computer to original manufacturers specifications and all my purchased Itune music was deleted from my computer.  I didn't back up my itunes because they advertise they keep a record of your purchased music.  I contacted Itunes and they have stated they only have a record of purchases made this year.  I've been a member for ten years.  Any ideas on how to get back my purchased music?  Also, I have an old Ipod Nano that I haven't used for quite some time because the battery didn't hold its charge, and it has some of my older purchased music.  Itunes said I can't get the music on my old ipod downloaded back onto my computer, any ideas on this?

  • I am not able to retrieve my saved itunes music

I have tons of musicI have downloaded and purchased, I am not able to get to it.  my computer went down and was completely wiped out.  I lost every thing including all my music.  How do I get all these back?  I have about 4000 songs.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backiup copy ot put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, you can redownload itunes purchases:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Recovering my music ratings before reinstalling

It looks like I have to reinstall Itunes because of an (error 13003) that will not allow me to open Itunes. Before I reinstall itunes, is there a file that can be saved from my current Itunes that will save my music ratings in my library? I'd hate to have to go through all my music and re-rate them again!
Thanks in advance with any assistance on this.

Before I reinstall itunes, is there a file that can be saved from my current Itunes that will save my music ratings in my library?
Back up the entire library before proceeding. While the reinstallation process won't change the library in any way, you should still have a backup of it.

  • "The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved" - Error 1450

I get this error when I try to update my library:
"The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1450)."
I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTune for about 7 times but it keeps coming back.
    What can I do?

I wish I could say either the Reg changes or disabling McAfee anti-virus worked for me, but I am still stuck.
I am running 6 on a Win2K Server. My account is admin and I have confirmed it is not a permissions issue or a lock file issue.
I receive the -1450 error in the following conditions:
    1. iTunes attempts to save library
    2. iTunes attempts to download a purchase (actually, it appears to occur after the file is downloaded, but it does not save the file to disk, although it thinks it downloaded the file)
    3. iTunes attempts to rip a CD. This is a random occurrence whereby the rip stops at some random place mid-song. I may have it happen immediately, then work for a few songs, then happen again. I have been able to rip 2-3 CDs before seeing the error, whereas other times it seems to occur with the first song and I retry a few dozen times before it works again. I have used 2 different CD drives.
    4. iTunes attempts to sync with the iPod. In this case, I randomly receive the error that I need to reset my iPod to factory defaults. However, after a day of waiting, it works again. I actually tried to reset the iPod to factory defaults when I was first presented with this problem--it caused a write error and crashed the iPod to the point where it could not even be recovered by the Apple staff at the Apple store; they gave me a new replacement unit.
I have to think this is a programming issue on the iTunes side, specific to Win2K (and possibly NT). Has anyone had this problem on an XP box?
My next step is to move all my files and software over to my XP box and see if I receive the same errors. Should that fail, I'll use a non-iTunes product until a software update is released.
Anyone from Apple checking into the -1450 error issues?

  • Old FileVault crashed my MacBook Pro, had to delete, reinstall and Time Machine restore failed. Trying to manually rebuild. No iPhoto pics, no iTunes music and NO DOCUMENTS found! Any thoughts?

Here's the ordeal. I'm running a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 inch with Lion OS. When I converted to Lion, I didn't have enough room on my harddrive to convert to the new FileVault, so I remained on the old system. Less than a week ago I reboot my computer because iPhoto seems to be stuck on "cataloging" my photos, though after days of letting it run, it doesn't do anything. After the reboot, my computer appears as if it had been reset to factory settings with all my programs gone, etc. I'm like, hey, I've got Time Machine, I'll restore it. After the restore is run, when I go to login, I get the dreadful error message, "You are unable to log into the FileVault user "John" at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred". I searched the internet via my iPhone for suggestions and followed everyone of them, all the way down to erasing my harddrive and reinstalling Lion. So I get back into my computer and think I'm golden. I go to restore my computer via Time Machine and wham....I'm right back to that error message. I think, ok, I'll do it again. This time it messes us even more, giving me two login screens, one for the new Lion like before I restored the computer and then a second, as if it were restored, but unable to login. On top of that, I couldn't get back to the Command-R page! I thought I was really screwed! Well, I finally figured a way back, or maybe it was just that it finally decided to cooperate, I don't know, but I erased my harddrive again, and reinstalled again and thought, well, I'll rebuild manually by selecting what I want to restore from the Time Machine drive. I was able to get all my applications back and running, but to my dismay, I seemingly have lost all my iTunes music (except that which Apple has graciously setup to redownload now "thank you!) plus all my iPhoto's and even worse, all my DOCUMENTS!!!! Here I thought Time Machine from backing all this stuff up, but with over a years worth of back-ups I cannot locate any photos, music, or my documents on my drive to extract! Needless to say, I will never be using Time Machine again to back up my computer, I'll find another program or at least do it all manually. But my question is: am I looking in the wrong places for this files? Are they hidden under some unknowning folder that doesn't list it as music, photos or files? I can manage with the music, I can live with the photos because my wife has many of them on her computer and I have many uploaded to Facebook, but my files! My documents, thousands of them, many with information I won't be able to compile again, seemingly gone unless someone out there has any ideas?!!!
I even had iPhoto search the drive for photos and after hours of the barber shop pole spinning I cancelled the command for I figured it wasn't going to find anything.
If anyone has any suggestions, or if Apple, you are reading this and can provide some direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also - my battery has been telling me "service battery" for a LONG time and then it switched to "replace soon" som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
... my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location.

  • HT1386 I had to reinstall Windows 7 on my PC, when I synced my iPhone to my PC only the iTunes music files moved back to PC, how do i get my non-iTunes music files back onto my PC?

So as i stated I reinstalled Windows 7 on my PC, wiping the harddrive in the process. I didn't copy my music files to a third device because I assumed I would be able to retrieve all my songs from my iPhone 4 when I resynced the devices. Unfortunately only my iTunes-purchased songs went back to my desktop. This leaves about 1400 songs that I ripped from CDs on my phone and I can't see how to get those songs from my iPhone to my desktop again. I would really like to not have to waste a day ripping CDs again. Can anyone help?

You need to restore them from the backup that you should have of your computer that you made before reinstalling Windows 7. The iPhone is not a backup device.

  • The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved

Ok, so without making any modifications (hardware or software) whatsoever- I come in from work, plop down to my computer, click on iTunes, and the music library has disappeared- I get the following error message:
The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved.
The disk could not be read from or written to.
So, in iTunes there is no songs and no playlists and no podcasts...
...the music is on my hard drive, it's just not in iTunes, the iTunes Library file has gone missing, but I'm not sure how...
I have like 5,000 songs so I keep them on an external drive to save room on my internal drive. I thought maybe the warning means that the disk is write protected, so I right clicked on the drive (and iTunes folder), said "Get Info," and I have read and write access.
I tried changing my iTunes Library location to a different hard drive and folder, and nothing works, what in the world do I do?

I'm having the exact same message, except in my case, nothing changed. I leave all 3,000 songs on my hard drive and suddenly nothing will copy. I still have the same songs as before, but nothing can be added from the store or from my cds. Have you worked out the problem? Can you share your strategy?

  • ITunes Music Library file cannot be saved.  An unknown error occurred (-54)

I just went through the problem of not being able to access my iTunes library and think I got that fixed. It is on an external drive because it is about 55gb's of HD space. I have it linked via an alias on my internal drive of my powerbook.
Now I get this message: The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-54).
First question: If Apple has tagged it with a -54 then it wouldn't be unknown would it?
Second question: I can still play music through iTunes, this dialogue just keeps coming up, with the option to not warn me again. Is it anything to worry about?
    Thanks for any help.

Please let me know what you decided to do with this problem. I am suddenly getting the same "error" message. Well, except that my "unknown error" is tagged as (-50). I'm searching through the discussions now.
I had some trouble with iTunes earlier in the week (after wiping out my iPod and other not-so-helpful "tips" on here) I wound up reinstalling Quicktime. But it worked fine until just now.
Now keep in mind, I subscribe to tons of podcasts and add new music both from iTunes Music Store and other sources all the time.

The music does not belong to you.  You have no legal right to it and there is no way to keep it.
    Sorry

  • My harddrive crashed but the Geek Squad said they saved my music.  All 1581 songs are still listed in my iTunes, but can

Geek Squad saved my music, but now when i try listening to a playlist, 19 out of 23 songs cannot be found.  the message states the song couldn't be used because the original file could not be found.  I;m then asked if i want to locate it.  WHen I choose Yes, it just takes me back to my iTunes.
Any ideas?  I don't want to lose all of my music.
    Thanks!

Depending on how the Geek Squad recovered your data the files may not be quite where iTunes expects to find them. The usual reason for missing files is that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.
When you get things fixed make a backup.

  • Need help saving music before reformatting ipod

My computer recently crashed and I lost all my itunes music. Now my ipod crashed and needs to be reformatted but I have no backup music files- is there anyway to save my music/transfer them before I erase them all by reformatting??

    Hi gher8ald!
You always have the option of creating a backup directly from your phone using iCloud, more information on which can be found here:
iCloud: iCloud storage and backup overview
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12519
Also, all music and app purchases made through the iTunes Store are always accessible and re-downloadable through your past purchases history on your iTunes Store account. More information about that can be found in this link:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
