Saving Location Bar Suggestion Prefs - Options/Privacy Tab

I am having an issue with the Firefox --> Options --> Privacy Tab --> Location Bar --> When using suggest (x) command sequence. Namely, that it doesn't save my options.
It seems to default to suggesting from Bookmarks, even though I continually tell it to simply suggest "nothing." During a FF session, I can tell it "nothing" and it functions correctly. But if I exit/restart, it resets to "bookmarks."
I have been through all of https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Preferences%20are%20not%20saved?s=privacy+tab&r=6&as=s and none of it works (or seems to apply in the first place). The only option that I have left to attempt is the final piece of that post, destroying the entire prefs file and starting from scratch. Obviously, I'd prefer to avoid that if at all possible.
I have tested it with other prefs, such as "remember my browsing history" and it saves/unsaves exactly as it should, which points to it being a Location Bar suggestion issue alone.
Any suggestions? Thank you.

Well, in the end what I had to do was an amalgamation of things. No 3rd party software, no extra prefs files, file was uncorrupted. I had to completely tear out the user.js file, restart Firefox, exit without changing anything, go into the prefs.js file and just completely remove the urlbar preference line (rather than editing it false/2/3 etc., which didn't work). Then restart Firefox again, make the change to the Location Bar in in Options-->Privacy, exit. Restart... and then it was fixed.
I'm sure this was the roundabout way to do it, but I certainly won't frown at success!
Hopefully it won't come back in the future. So, despite the fact that I still had to do a bunch of running around, I appreciate the various links, they gave me the ideas on what to do.

• Change location bar suggestions so it shows bookmarks first instead of most opened

Hello,
I would love to change the locations bar settings so it shows matched bookmarks first instead of history based hits. For example I want to quick access the web site "xxxx". I start typing in "xx" and the first suggestion is for the main site - that is why I bookmark "xxxx.com/forum". With the bookmark next time I start typing "xx" it always shows the "xxxx.com/forum" first, no matter that I've accessed the main sait "xxxx.com" more. The show only bookmarks option that is in Options -> Privacy doesn't suit me since I want to view history as well.
Note: An add-on for that is a perfectly valid option as well
Thanks in advance!

You can add a space and a * to search bookmarks.

• Why, when I requested that the location bar suggest 'nothing' does it continue to do so?

Went into Tools, then options, then Location Bar. Chose Suggest 'nothing'. Clicked OK. Done this several times but has been completely ignored!

Maybe there is a problem with the preferences.

• Why am I not able to type in new URLs in the location bar either in my current tab or any new tab in the middle of my session? I've never had this problem with any other version of Firefox.

For example, I had several tabs open in Firefox 4 just now. For no apparent reason, when I opened a fifth tab, I couldn't click on the location bar or type anything into it even with repeated attempts. I either have to start Firefox again or try going back to a tab that is already open with a page loaded and type into the location bar there. That worked for me to be able to get to this website. This is very frustrating and seriously hampering my ability to use Firefox--which I have previously always been impressed with. I have a 2 year old Dell Optiplex 755 running Windows Vista.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• I cannot access options privacy tab

In Tools - Options - Privacy....I cannot access the Privacy tab. I can open all the other Options tabs..just not Privacy.
Am I being hacked/tracked? thanks.

Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons. <br />
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)
# You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
# Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running. <br />
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

• "When using the location bar suggest..." Even set to "Nothing" I still get suggestions. Make it stop, please!

I have tried changing the field to 'Nothing" several times with no result. It still gives me suggestions. I've tried clearing recent history with no results either. As you can see below, my "browser.urlbar.autoFill", "browser.urlbar.autoFill.typed", and "browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled" are all set to 'false'
Any help with this is GREATLY appreciated.

I found it.

• Location bar under privacy tab not remembering settings

Ever since Firefox 16 and 17 versions came out I've always had this issue with the location bar not remembering my option. "When using the location bar, suggest: Nothing." Is what I prefer but if I ever reboot my computer or simply restart firefox over all, it always goes back to the option "History and Bookmarks." I find this very annoying. The reason I waited so long to report this is because I had hoped the next version of Firefox would take care of it. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem or will I have to simply wait till it's fixed by Firefox itself?

Unfortunately, that didn't help me. I went ahead and uninstalled Firefox completely without saving any customizations and reinstalled it. Seems to work fine now.

• In Firefox 4, how do I get back the context menu for the drop down list of the Location Bar so I can Open Link in New Tab, which I did often in FF 3?

Firefox 3 has a context menu for the drop down list of
the Location Bar. One option on this menu I used often
is "Open Link in New Tab" -- quite convenient.
This context menu has disappeared in Firefox 4.
Can I get it back?

• My location bar won't suggest sites, but my settings are telling it to. What's wrong?

You know, when you start typing a letter or two into the location bar and a list of sites you've visited appear in the dropdown. On the privacy settings page, I have History set to "Firefox will: Remember History" and Location Bar "When using location bar, suggest: History and Bookmarks." What other settings could be preventing it from working?

The Firefox location bar is the address bar, just another name for it.

• I want my privacy settings with using the location bar to stay at NOthing

Hi. I cannot stand how the location bar works with Mozilla. I have went to 'Privacy', clicked on "when using the location bar, suggest", and then clicked on NOTHING. It does not stay with this setting, but goes back to showing everything. I don't want everyone in my house seeing exactly what I have been doing, nor do "I" want to see the addresses and bookmarks listed here. If I want to view all of that, I will got to "bookmarks" or "history".

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
If you do not want that data to appear if the location bar history is enabled then use Clear Recent History to clear the history when you exit Firefox or use Private Browsing mode.

• When I set (on two different computers) the Location Bar to "Nothing" it resets to "History and bookmarks" as soon as I close and reopen Firefox.

When I set (on two different computers) the Location Bar option: When using the location bar suggest: to "Nothing" it resets to "History and bookmarks" as soon as I close and reopen Firefox. I am using the latest vesion on Win8 on both computers. One has Bitdefender the othe McKafee. I have no obvious Addware, I use Iobit Uninstaller Advanced Care and and Driver manager on both computers. Until now I have always used Firefox as I refuse to use Explorer and I do not want to have to use Opera or another browser instead.
Can you please help?

Have you seen this general article: How to fix preferences that won't save?
Also, this might be a glitch with using automatic private browsing mode. Some settings changes might not be saved in that mode.
If all else fails, do you want to try a manual hack?
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window (Windows Explorer window) showing your current settings files.
Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
* (menu bar) File > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then open prefs.js in a text editor by right-clicking it and choosing Edit or Open With. (Double-clicking leads to Windows attempting to execute it, so I do not recommend that.)
Paste this at the end of the file on its own line:
user_pref("browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled", false);
Then save the file and close your editor.
Start Firefox back up again. Did the manual change work?

• Why have my location bar dropdown history as well as bookmarks stopped working?

For some reason I can no longer use the drop down arrow on my location bar to see my history and quickly go to a site previously viewed.
Also I can no longer bookmark any pages. I have gone to the tools and options and privacy to make the recommended tech support changes. Still nothing!
Help please

Make sure that the Location Bar is not set to "Nothing":
* Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: History, Bookmarks, History and Bookmarks, Nothing
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Location+bar+autocomplete
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

• How do I get rid of the dropdown list history on the location bar? I have tried changing several settings and all I have done is mess up my ability to open ZIP downloads.

I wanted to clear the drop down suggestions/history list on the location bar so I went to Tools/Options and tried changing several settings. I could not get the results I wanted. Suggestions?
I did get one unwanted result -- or maybe just a coincidence. I received an email with attached pictures in a ZIP format and I could not get the download to open. Suggestions?

Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: Nothing

• Location bar is not working since new update?

With the recent firefox update I can no longer quickly go to websites by typing in the location bar. I used to be able to type a simple thing like "face" and it would give me options to select from such as: facebook.com.
now though I can't even click the dropdown arrow for a list of my most frequently visited websites. How do I reenable this most useful of features?

In the Tools menu select Options to open the options window. Select the Privacy panel and make sure the setting at the bottom of that dialog for the location bar "When using the location bar, suggest" is set to "History and Bookmarks".
Another possible cause for the location bar no longer working is a problem with the file that stores history and bookmarks. For details on fixing that see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite

• Bookmark Locator Bar Issues

I have written in about this before; I originally set the "Location Bar" inside the Firefox settings NOT to suggest my bookmarks, but after a while it was starting to ignore that command and it would set itself back up after restarting Firefox to suggest bookmarks when typing in a web address. This problem was solved by setting up a new profile within Firefox. After that, this problem no longer existed.
Now as of today, the problem is back. I wish there was a way to contact developers of Firefox and let them know of this issue. If there are no other solutions out there except for setting up a new profile, fine but it's starting to get annoying that I have to go through this process everytime this problem happens.

Just to clarify:
* Can you successfully change the "When using the location bar suggest" option in the Options dialog (Privacy panel)? By that I mean, after you OK the change, when you go back into the dialog, it kept your change?
* If Firefox is allowing the change, is it working at least for the rest of your session?
* If you can fix it for the current session, but the change gets reverted after you exit and start Firefox up again:
** Please see this article: How to fix preferences that won't save (Your More System Details does show you have a user.js file, which overrides your previous session settings at startup, so definitely check that out)
** If you have utility, privacy, or security software that has a feature to lock or roll back unwanted browser settings changes (Advanced SystemCare, for example), you may need to turn off this feature in order to be able to save changes.
I noticed you have an extension named "Updated Ad Blocker for Firefox 11+". That actually is quite old now and if you want to use an ad blocker, Adblock Plus is more up-to-date so I suggest removing the old one and getting ABP.
