Saving mail and address book to use in Snow Leopard

Is it possible to save/migrate these files to snow leopard without losing previous emails?  I'm having trouble with lion and think I will have to erase/format and reinstall the osx.  Thanks.
Computer is a mac pro, 2010 vintage. Latest upgrades for snow leopard and lion already completed.

Under Windows in the Menu bar select Connection doctor. You will see green to indicate a connection and red to show there is a problem.  Except for iCloud account you'll see two entries for each account 1) Receiving and 2) SMTP for sending.
EDIT SMTP SETTINGS
In Accounts window > Outgoing Mail Server SMTP:  select to Edit SMTP Server list... from popup.
Select account in the list.(It's not uncommon to find extra SMTP servers listed. When you remove account, Mail does not delete the smtp info. You might need to do some clean up in the list to remove the extras.)
Under Advanced Tab:
Apple defaults to the default ports (25,465, 587) but some servers prefer a custom port. Check to see what port they recommend. Gmail for example likes 465, Outlook.com 587, Yahoo 465 or 587
Verify if your server require SSL. (Yahoo does require SSL)
User Name. Enter full email address  eg.  [email protected]
Add password if it is blank.(If you have two step authentication setup, you'll need to get an app specific password)
Open Connection Doctor under Window in the Menu bar.
Do you see green light now for your account SMTP?

  • Mail and Address book playing up

Hello. I am having problems with my Mail and Address book. For some reason, sent mails sometimes do not end up in the Sent folder, received emails sometimes go to the Trash without me sending them there, and I often have to resort to "Search" in the top right hand corner of the screen to find the mail I am looking for. What's more, my address book has stopped working properly: I can create groups but each group shows the general contact list by its side, even upon creation! I cannot add or delete from the group list. Basically, it seems like the two programes have gone all wonky tonky. This may or may not have to do with the recent Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta problems. I posted here in that regard but since the problems I noticed disappeared of their own accord, I did not bother reinstalling all as suggested. Reinstalling everything is simply too much hassle for me ... I use address book a lot and need things to work. Does anyone have a quick fix for this? Could this be caused by the faulty Apple January update? thank you in advance!

You should back up what you have.
Then, restart from your Mac OS X Installation Disk (insert disk and hold down C key during startup). At the first Installer screen, run Disk Utility from the menu. Use both the Repair and Repair Permissions routines on the hard drive. Do Repair first, because you problem sounds like a disk directory issue. If Disk Utility cannot make the repair, you may need a tool like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.

  • Mail and address book data file location

Does anyone know where mail and address book saves its data?
My old mac died but I was able to remove the hard drive and mount it in a external firewire case. The drive mounts and appears in good shape. I tried using the migration utility to transfer my data into my new iMac. While a lot of data and applications did make the move, my mail files and folders did not show up on my new iMac. I'm hoping I can transfer the mail files manually. The problem is I can't find where they are located on my old computer. I was using Max os 10.4.11 on my old computer.
The same problem with my address book data. It did not transfer over with migration app. and I can't locate this data either.

The majority of Mail is in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    AB...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

  • Mail and Address Book corrupted?

When I open my Applications folder, the two icons for Mail and Address Book have changed to an unfamiliar icon (it's a picture of blank pages with an overlaid "A" similar to the ruler-and-pencil application icon). Moreover, neither application will open. I've tried restarting and I haven't connected and USB devices to swap the icons (a known issue)...what's happened?
    Thanks!
    Matt

Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using (which you haven’t provided), unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
You may also have to reinstall the following Security Update, which includes most of the security updates released after Mac OS X 10.3.9:
Security Update 2007-007 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • 'Mail' and 'Address Book' not communicating

I have recently started using 'Mail' and 'Address Book'.
There is a problem: These programs don't seem to communicate. When I address an e-mail, the addressee is not auto-filled from 'Address Book'. Likewise, I can't select a name in 'Address Book' and e-mail to that person.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

In Address Book, what happens if you click the label (home, work ...) beside a contact's email address?
In Mail's Preferences/Composing have you selected "Automatically Complete Addresses"?

  • Mail and Address Book freezing on launch

Just recently, both Mail and Address Book have started freezing immediately after I launch them. I tried using DiskWarrior, repairing Permissions using Disk Utility, and repairing my Keychain, but the problem still persists. At first, Mail displays its window as expected, but it does not respond (although I can still move the window) and I get the spinning beachball cursor. Address book just brings up a blank window, with no expected contents. Like Mail, it does not respond, I get the spinning beachball cursor, and I can still move the window.
Any ideas as to what's going on and how to fix it?

Well, I don't see that option anywhere in Verizon's webmail service. But, it looks like your other suggestion is on the right track. With some minimal experimentation, I found that when I remove the "AddressBook" folder from "Application Support," the freeze disappears. But on the down side, only two contacts show up when I open Address Book. So for now, I've put the folder back where it was originally. Do you have any recommendations on how to narrow down the problem so that I can fix the freezes without having to lose the bulk of my contacts list (and have to piece it back together)?

  • Mail and Address Book Not Speaking to Each Other

I recently upgraded to 10.7.4 and at that time decided to drop Thunderbird and Mozilla as my default Email set up.  I embraced using iCal, Mail, and Address Book.  I manage two POP based email accounts and 2 Gmail accounts for work.  I have a very long tree of folders based upon customers in my On My Mac - Email Archive.
It was a pain to get files up and over to Mail from Thunderbird in the first place.  I have used this set up for a few months and am not trying to get the most out of it.  I am having issues with Address Book speaking with Mail.  Address Book has a bunch of contacts that have mostly been pulled our of my Gmail address book but none of my business POP account clients show up. I can not add them to the Address Book.  There is no error message.  Further more using Past Recipients shows nothing.  I am frustrated but can not afford to lose all the project information in previous emails.
    Any suggestions?

To reinstall the progams, who don't you use your computers CD drive?
This could help between the communcation between your Mac and your external Drive. I experienced this problem but with a external HD, and this link solved it.

  • How do we transfer contacts and mails from apple mail and address book to Microsoft outlook on my mac

How do we transfer contacts and mails from apple mail and address book to Microsoft outlook on my mac

From Contacts, anyway (the new version of Address Book) you can export to a .abbu file and import then into Outlook. I'm not sure about Mail as I only really use Outlook...

  • How to move Mail and Address book content from 10.3 emac to 10.5 iMac

How do I move Mail and Address book content from my old 10.3 emac to my new 10.5 Leopard iMac directly, or do I have to move the names etc, one by one?
    Richard

I cannot find a migration assistant. I have copied the Mail and Address Book applications over from 10.3 to 10.5 and tried using mailboxes import, but 10.5 Mail will not accept any of the options. The same for address book. Can you give more specific instructions?
The applications, Mail and Address Book, don't actually store your data in the application. So, moving the applications over to your new computer will have no useful effect and could be detrimental if you replaced the newer versions with the old.
Migration Assistant is in you Utilities folder and should have asked to be run during the installation.
Your Mail data is stored in yourUserName/Library/Mail. The Address Book data is stored in yourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. If your new installation is blank with no data, you can actually replace those directories on the 10.5 version with the old. For Mail, you also have to get the com.apple.mail.plist file from your old username/Library/Preferences/ folder and put it in the new 10.5 folder of the same name. Once that is done, when you open Mail and Address Book, they will update the data to the new format.
Migration Assistant will do all of this for you.
EDIT: Based on roam's comments, you may have to move the Mail manually. You can also just bring the Mail directory over to the 10.5 machine and use Mail's Import command to get all the mail out of the old Mail directory.

  • How to delink Mail and Address Book?

I do not want MAIL to use email addresses in my ADDRESS BOOK. Is there a way to "delink" MAIL and ADDRESS BOOK?

If you can tell us why, we might be able to provide workaround.
You could also take all of the emails out of Address Book, then there won't be any integration.

  • Mail and Address book crash

This problem started right after a made a smart group within address book and then deleted it. Address Book and Mail will not even load now. They open but have to force quit. Address book open with 0 contacts (I should have ~300).
After searching for some help I did the following but still no luck:
    Repaired Permissions via Disk Utility
Deleted com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist and com.apple.AddressBook.plist from Library \ preferences
Under Library \ application support \ renamed AddressBook file to AddressBook.old
At this point I cannot recall what order I was doing these things but eached looked like they worked for some.
Is there anything else I can do? or a trick to the order in which I need to do them? Appreciate any help I can get on this.
Both Mail and Address Book open - as soon as I click on one thing it crashed and have to force quit.
    Thanks

Try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and delete this file:
    com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings so be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.
If you can get Mail to open and not crash, the first thing to do is to use the 'Mailbox/Rebuild' menu.
If still no joy, do you have a backup of your mail folder(s) you can use as replacements?
Use it if you do, then perhaps use your SL DVD and do a custom install/applications.
I really think the problem is with your main inbox, tho - located in yourUsername/Library/Mail
If you don't have a backup, of your main inbox, copy it, rename it, temporarily abandon the original inbox and see if you can import the clone.

  • Mail and Address Book mess up

Hey guys, every time I do a search for an email address when filling in the recipient in Mail it messes with my Address Book. The problem usually occurs when the contact whose address I'm searching for has only their first name filled out in Address Book. For instance, Jane. I start typing Jane into the recipient bar and confirm the desired email address. Now when I do that, it automatically rewrites my Address Book entry and fills the contacts surname using their first name. So I'm left with a contact called Jane Jane in my Address Book. Any thoughts??

    Chris,
tried, but no results with both suggestions.
    Thanks anyhow.
I have a bakup of the disk and therefore I could restore it, but of course this will take very long. Do you any idea of which file/folder should I try to restore instead of the entire disk?
I tried to do this just for the 2 files of both applications (Mail and Address book), but I did not have any improvement.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Very Large Spacing Issue In Both Mail And Address Book!!

    Hello,
I need your help to resolve this problem. Initially I had a problem with garbled font in my Mail application. I used FontNuke in an attempt to resolve the problem. The result of using FontNuke was that the font was un-garbled but now I have very large spacing in the Mail and Address Book applications. Also the circles on the left side of the Mail application (that normally indicate the number of unread messages you have) are also very large!! the same thing is happens with the red star on the Mail icon that indicates the number of unread messages you have.
I would really appreciate any help that you can provide!
    Thanks,
    SydCam

Thanks for following up so quickly. I took your advice and checked my fonts. I opened Font book and got rid of all the "duplicate" fonts and made sure that I had all of the required fonts. I then rebooted and when I went back to Mail and the Address Book, I still had the same problem. There are still very large spaces in my email both in the header and body. The circle to the left that indicates how many un-read email you have is still very large. It is over sized. I wish there was a way I could show you a screen capture so you can see what exactly what I'm referring to.
Obviously there is something that I'm missing, but I just don't know what it is. I would greatly appreciate any help that you (or anyone else) can provide!
    Thanks in advance!
    SydCam

  • Both mail and address book very slow to launch on 10.6 and 10.6.1

Like unimaginably slow. After clicking on the applications, I was able to perform a google search, find this forum, and and start this thread before either application became active.
I am running 10.6.1 and have had this problem since 10.6. not before.
I upgraded my system, I did not install Snow Leopard fresh, and I really hope I dont have to to solve this problem. So much for the speed portion of the Snow Leopard improvements!
Has anybody else seen this issue? I certainly hope so because it's terrible to have to track down a problem like this alone.

Thank you for this link. Here is the process I used to fix it.
1 - I had one smart group in address book, with a NOT variable. (if contact is NOT in any group)
2 - click on the smart folder, wait a long time for it to be selected.
3 - delete the smart folder
    4 - close address book
    5 - reboot.
6 - both Mail and Address book now open very quickly. Problem solved
    Thanks again!
    EDIT:
re-creating the same smart group brings back the same problem!!! So we have broken address book functionality in 10.6? just awesome....
