Saving Media in Safari vs saving in Windows

Hi Everyone,
I have a Mac question: when I go to a link that has a media file, such as an mp3, Safari opens a new page, and the file plays in the browser window. I want to download the file to my computer, so I click on the right down arrow, and I read the message that this is only available in Quicktime Pro. In the Activity Window, the file is present, but the size is 0 bytes. I'm assuming it hasn't downloaded. Is that a correct assumption?
In Windows, I right-click, choose "Save As..." and I'm good to go. Or, I grab the file from the Temp Internet directory. I'm thinking that there must be a similar way on the Mac, without spending $40 USD to upgrade to Quicktime Pro.
Any suggestions as to how?
Thanking everyone in advance...

  • JPG images smaller after saving out of Safari

Maybe I am missing some totally basic knowledge about how Mac OS X handles images or Safari on Mac OS X is very different in this regard as compared to other browsers/systems:
I open a picture in Safari and it says in the title that this image has a size of 1271x1526 pixels. Now I want to save that picture by right-clicking into it and then left-clicking on the option "save image to desktop". That it does, all is well so far, but when I later open that image with preview it's much smaller than it was before. So I used a third-party image browser (CocoViewX) and there I get the full details, the image in the jpg file now has a size of only 153x184 pixels.
If, instead, I click copy in the context menu in Safari and then paste in CocoViewX and export from there in the same format (jpg), the image is full-size, 1271x1526 pixels, again.
What is this? Am I doing something wrong? Is there some setting I have to change so I can save the picture in full size right out of Safari without having to copy and paste via another program?
Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.
MacMini and also a PC and an iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Dear scapesuiter,
thank you for your input, I wish it were that simple, but this problem occurs after I click the thumbnail and have the complete image in a new browser window. I see the whole image (even have to scroll because it's bigger than my screen) and right in that large image I right-click ...
It almost seems as if Mac OS X (or Safari) is automatically reducing the image size whilst saving it. But in Mac OS X this also doesn't seem to be a kind of thumbnail or so, I double-click the image in the Finder and then I see it in preview and when I click "original size" it's much smaller than my screen as opposed to before saving it from Safari (see above).
Again, thanks anyway, can you think of another reason why "it" might do this?

  • Images saved from Mobile Safari are significantly degraded

When I tried to use an image saved from Mobile Safari as my wallpaper I noticed that it looked horrible. It was blurry and more importantly the dynamic range of the image had been compressed, blowing out all the detail in the bright areas of the image and making it contrastier. This is especially bad on the type of photo I was trying to use, a high-key image, where most of the detail is in the light tones. Much of the image was simply displayed as blank white.
As a test I tried emailing the image I had saved into Photos to myself and compared it to the original I had saved from the web. Sure enough, the image was blurrier and had less dynamic range so it's not just an iPhone display issue. Also, the image was only 27% smaller in file size and the pixel dimensions were actually slightly increased. A quick re-save in Photoshop with JPEG quality set to low (4) reduced the file size by 53% while still not affecting the image anything like what the iPhone did. So it doesn't make sense that the poor quality is only due to resizing for faster transmission.
Can anyone else confirm this or replicate the issue? I've verified this with a 1st gen and 3G iPhone side by side, both running OS 2.1.

    No, it's not only you.
I noticed it too. As a matter of fact, I just posted a really long post in a thread about iPhone/iPod Touch's photo quality.

  • Windows Media within Safari

When trying to view Canucks highlights in Safari the videos do not play. They are wmv files but what I get is the Quicktime logo with a question mark over it. If I use Firefox to access the videos I have no problems (It knows to use WMP instead of QT).
Anyone know how to get this working in Safari? That is, is there a way to specify which plugin to use with specific media within Safari?
Here is the link to the Canucks videos: http://www.canucks.com/player/new/player.asp?bw=300
I have tried the suggestions here to no avail:

I was able to fix my own problem. In case others experience the same, here is what I did:
I had intalled flip4mac at some point and I guess had forgotten about it. I followed the instructions to uninstall found here: http://www.flip4mac.com/faqs_wmv.htm and it works now.

  • Can't delete my saved passwords from Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

When the bugs in 1Password initially disabled that application on Safari 5.1 I started saving manually entered passwords on Safari while 1Password was being fixed. Now that 1Password is working I want to remove the saved passwords on Safari as a secirity precaution.  But they won't delete; not individually, not as a group. When I click Remove All the passwords all turn blue as if about to be deleted en mass but don't disappear. Trying it by highlighting one and clicking Remove doesn;t work either.  Any suggestions?

You are much better off using the Mac OS X app Keychain Access which is pre installed on your Mac instead of a third party password manager.
This link shows the results of a Safari / 1Password forum search which reveals all the problems 1Password causes for Safari.

Your passwords are not stored in Safari per se, they are stored in Keychain Access.  /Applicatiions/Utilities. Trying to use both is causing a conflict.

  • Saving Media Kind, Position & Shuffling in ID3 Metadata for MP3 Audiobooks?

Hello, I have a problem saving "media kind" - audioboks as file metadata independent of iTunes.
I recently purchased an iPhone however I am pretty apathetic to iTunes - I use it as my only media player at the moment because of the iPhone, however I want my collection to work with whatever software I use now as well as whatever platform I use 10 years from now, hence my dependence on 3rd party tools to save metadata. iTunes has it's own nice little database but I do not want to be at the whim of this database everytime I want to transfer files to another computer, or in the event of a catastrophic data failure. I have already witnessed this with album art, where I add art in iTunes but it does not save the art in the actual mp3 file.
So I sorted my music collection using MB Picard, Tag&Rename, MediaMonkey and Evillyrics. It's all looking nice, with full ID3 metadata including genre and cover art. Now it's time to organise my collection of DRM-free Audiobooks which are currently in MP3 format.
Initially I looked into converting all the MP3s into AAC files, then into M4B, and I tried this method manually in iTunes as well as using various software, including one called MarkAble, which saves the chapter info, and does some other nice stuff. While this is one way of organising audiobooks, it is a time intensive method. In iTunes 8, with the new ability to select "Audiobook" as media kind, I can keep my files as MP3s and save some time and effort.
My problem lies in the fact that this new media kind field is not actually saved in the ID3 metadata. When I add an audiobook to iTunes and set the media kind to audiobook, if I then remove the files from my iTunes library, then add them in again, iTunes has forgotten that they were tagged as Audiobooks, and they are back in my main library with my music, and media kind is set back to music, with remember position and skip when shuffling also unticked.
Unfortunately, 3rd party tools are of little help here. Tag&Rename does have a music/video field where you can select Audiobook, however after tagging that, iTunes does not see these files as audiobook, so I assume "media kind" must be a non-standard field for iTunes, like how Apple used TPE2 band/orchestra as "Album Artist". Mediamonkey users have the same issue with no "media kind" field available, as described here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=41731
So can anyone help me - is there a way I can save the media kind, skip when shuffling and remember position information independent of iTunes?

With iTunes 8.x you have the option to tell iTunes to treat any audio file as an audiobook. Simply select the tracks, *Get Info.*, then on the options tab set *Media kind* to Audiobook. You can also set options to *Remember playback position* and *Skip when shuffling*.
Assuming, however, that the books consist of more than one file you may have problems if you plan to listen to them on an iPod. The Audiobooks feature was originally designed for books that have been stitched up into a single file and hasn't been updated to reflect the changes that now make multi-track audiobooks easy to work with in iTunes. The main issue is that the iPod lists all audiobook files by track title/chapter name so unless you rename every track using a scheme such as *Book Title, Chapter XX* the tracks will play out of sequence. There are tools for creating iPod-friendly audiobooks for which Aldo on Audiobooks is probably the best reference. Personally I don't bother with the extra effort and just have an "Audiobooks" playlist folder containing sub-folders for each author and within these playlists for each audiobook. Although I still mark the files as Audiobooks to keep them out of my main music section when it comes to the iPod I ignore it's Audiobooks feature and use my own playlists for access.
Note that I've used leading digits in the playlist names to arrange these in chronological rather than alphabetical order.
As Chris notes Media Kind, Remember Playback Position & Skip When Shuffling are not recorded in the tag and so forgotten if files are removed & reimported. Apple could have implemented these via custom fields as with their Compilation flag but have chosen not to do so. If you give all your audiobooks the genre "Audiobook" then it is fairly simple to create a smart playlist with the rules *Genre is "Audiobook"* AND *Playlist is not Audiobooks*. Any files that turn up in this playlist can then have their attributes adjusted.

  • Safari not saving my cookies!

I installed the very very latest iTunes, and this messed up my safari by saving cookies. Google instant search doesnt stay off, youtube doesnt auto-log in. I cant downgrade my iTunes. I have already uninstalled, reinstalled, even deleted and installed Apple Application support manually.
    If you could help, thanks.

same problem here, and even if safari 5.1 worked properly I couldn't use 5.1 due to the jerky scrolling
    (fully updated XP system)
Some cookies work for awhile, but eventually they stop working, quitting and re-opening safari stops them all from working. Some cookies show up in the show cookies list and some don't.

  • Disable Saved Searches in Safari?

    Hi
After the 4.2.1 update I have not been able to disable saved searches in safari.
I use Google and every time I hit the search bar on the upper right corner in Safari, I get a list of past searches..I cannot remember how to turn it off.
I tried the "do not save searches" in the google preferences/settings to no avail.
    Any info would be great.
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
That clears the history but it seems though after I do another search the search term stays in a new list for next time. I remember there was a way that Safari would not save your searches..I tried the Google preferences section but it's not sticking...I'm "saving" the changes also and restarting the iPhone but no luck. Thoughts?
    Thanks again!

  • I don't want Safari to re-open all windows from last session; can't make it stop. Set Safari preferences to new window and new tab open with blank page, but it won't.

P.S. Also cleared cache and History. Running OS 10.7.4 and Safari 5.1.7.

I hate this "feature", and it is another example of Apple taking functionality (and choice) away from the user. In this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4550
there is a description of it.
    Resume in OS X Lion
When you open Safari in Lion or restart the Mac, Safari automatically restores the open windows and tabs from your last browsing session, so you can continue right where you left off.
Tip: To open Safari without resume, hold down the shift key (⇧) as you open Safari. Safari will then open with the options you selected in the "General" tab of Safari preferences, options like your homepage.
In Mac OS X v10.6 and Microsoft Windows, you can choose to have Safari automatically restore your windows in the "General" tab of Safari preferences.
99 times out of 100, I DON'T want to restore all the windows from my last browser session. It makes zero sense for them to take the checkbox out of the General tab of the Safari Prefs.
