Saving metadata with PSE10

Hello - I am a relatively new user of PSE10. I have a large collection of photos that I want to scan and archive on my Win XP PC (to be replaced with a Win 7 machine in next few weeks).
I know how to add information to photos using the "properties" function in PSE10 organizer (followed by ctl-W to write the info to the file). *However*, this information does NOT get written to the file. I have tested this by examining the resulting file in several different programs, including PaintShop Pro, Zoner Photo Studio, Windows Image viewer, etc. It appears that the only information that gets saved is whatever has been entered in the "caption" field. Nothing else that I have entered shows up.
Has anyone else run across this problem? All of the documentation that I have seen for PSE 10 claims that PSE 10 saves metadata with image files, but this does not appear to be the case. Any help / suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for the reply. When I'm in organizer I can right-click on an image, select properties, and enter information in the "caption" and "notes" fields, and I can also set "ratings". The information is still there if I close and re-open PSE. Also, the EXIF data associated with my camera or scanner is there. However, when I try to look at the file properties outside of PSE10 (e.g., in Windows Explorer, Zoner Photo Studio, or PaintShop) the "notes" and "ratings" info does not appear. I want to make sure that whatever info I enter in PSE10 is present in any file that I view *outside* of PSE10 (e.g., if I send it to someone, or view it with different SW, or look at it on another system).

Problems with saving metadata

Hello,
I have a new NAS and have started moving photos across to it. I have noticed that I am having issues saving metadata.
e.g. i move 39 images to the new location, I then received messages saying that meta data is not in sync with file date. I can correct this but some files metadata cannot be saved. I get a "photos have read-only access", obviously it's not RO as I just uploaded them.
If I repeat the save metadata action over and over, the number of affected files decreases until eventually they have all saved. I can then wait a few minutes and repeate the metadata save and 10 files or so are read-only again. Sometimes more, sometimes less.
Can anybody offer some advice for me on what is happening here?

Import statement vanishes while saving metadata

I am facing a strange problem.When I am saving metadata the import statements are erased from the //begin import and // end section in the implementation section of a view.But all packages are present.
Pease help

Check if there are errors with the metadata of your project, see "Problems" view in Eclipse.
Another possibility may be an exception in the NWDS, open the "PDE runtime" -> "Error log" view.
Do you find anything that might cause the problem?

Photo "...changed in external application" when saving metadata in LR2

I am getting occasional error dialogs saying that one or more photos have been changed in an external application when saving metadata. I'm quite certain the photos have not been touched since the catalog was built--two days ago.
I built an entirely new catalog after installing LR2. I changed some keywords as I not all images were keyworded in the same way. When I save metadata, either for an entire folder or for all files, I get occasional error dialogs about the image being changed externally. I'm quite certain that I changed nothing.
Running Win XP Pro SP2 + all updates except SP3, LR2, on Xeon 3070 with 3GGB RAM and lots of hard drive space.

If I didn't think my humor and irony would be misinterpreted as being rude, I might say "Why are you such a troublemaker, by asking this question? Don't you know from reading the forum, that there are multiple opinions about how LR works with changes done outside itself?" Ooops, I actually said it.<G>
But, seriously, I've had many of the same questions, so I've been following the various threads, and still haven't got a clear and relatively simple answer to "how to work with LR images and catalogs using outside applications, and not mess stuff up?"
So, again, seriously, thanks for asking. Hoping, like you, to get clearer understanding.

I spent 2 days with Seth Resnick trying to correct this and we re created my catalog. It was ok, until I imported new images and same problem. Now I have a new problem, when I bring image to PS it saves it but does not bring back to LR. Am I the only one out there who has this problem?

Saving Metadata time

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out why saving Metadata is so long with huge PSD files. It takes some many time and sometimes I get the Windows error message "Delete Write Failed". I would like to know if there really is a link between the Metadata and the PSD size. Do you have answers according this ? Or any ideas/solutions for fixing this problem ?

I think you have it backwards. It is taking too much time to save the metadata because of a disk I/O problem. I don't know if it's because it's networked or because that drive is starting to fail. But I am willing to bet if you take X's advice and save to a local drive you will see that it doesn't take much time to wirte the metadata.
As X explained most of the time the size of the file does not matter. Only the metadata section is updated and the rest of the file is left unaltered. So it takes the same amout of time to update a 20mb file as a 200mb one.

We want to get the dropdown list custom field data of document, but the XML file cannot fully record all corresponding custom field data by using "getItemRequest".

Problem saving attachments with longish filenames

We're having a problem saving attachments from Mail that are 25+ characters in length. ie. If we click on the "Save" attachment button in Mail, we get an alert that the file can't be saved because it's too long. We can drag the file to the desktop, but then can't move it without getting the "name is too long" alert. We have to change the name, deleting a bunch of characters. Using HFS+. Anyone have a solution?

When you drag the attachment to the desktop you should be able to click on the file's name then edit it so it's less then 25 characters. Try saving it again after deleting some characters.
We just switched from OS 9.4 to OS 10.4 (Intel) and found that Photoshop did not recognize any of the pics in our folders because we haven't been saving them with the file extension (i.e. jpeg, eps, etc.) We had to open all our pic files then add the extension. Apparently our old Macs could recognize a photo file but our new ones need the extension to be able to read the file. So if your file name is too long it's probably cutting off the extension - your computer won't let you save it until you make room for the file extension at the end.

Layer styles let you quickly apply effects to an entire layer. In the Effects panel, you can view a variety of predefined layer styles and apply a style with just a click of the mouse.
Three different layer styles applied to text
The boundaries of the effect are automatically updated when you edit that layer. For example, if you apply a drop shadow style to a text layer, the shadow changes automatically when you edit the text.
Layer styles are cumulative, which means that you can create a complex effect by applying multiple styles to a layer. You can apply one style from each style library per layer. You can also change a layer’s style settings to adjust the final result.
When you apply a style to a layer, a style icon appears to the right of the layer’s name in the Layers panel. Layer styles are linked to the layer contents. When you move or edit the contents of the layer, the effects are modified correspondingly.
Once you choose Layer > Layer Style > Style Settings, you can edit the settings of a layer’s style or apply other style settings or attributes available in the dialog box.
Lighting Angle Specifies the lighting angle at which the effect is applied to the layer.
Drop Shadow
Specifies the distance of a drop shadow from the layer’s content. You can also set the size and opacity with the sliders.
Outer Glow Size Specifies the size of a glow that emanates from the outside edges of the layer’s content. You can also set the opacity with the slider.
Inner Glow Size Specifies the size of a glow that emanates from the inside edges of the layer’s content. You can also set the opacity with the slider.
Bevel Size Specifies the size of beveling along the inside edges of the layer’s content.
Bevel Direction Specifies the direction of the bevel, either up or down.
Stroke Size Specifies the size of the stroke.
Stroke Opacity Specifies the opacity of the stroke.

Script for saving GIF with Animation Loop Endless

I am searching for a way to use "save for web" in a Photoshop CC Script.
I already found how to use the "save for web" using Script, but now i am stuck, because i cannot find any information on how to set
that the animation, i want to save as a Animated GIF File, can be set to loop endless.
I already tried to search in all the docs i found about scripting, but there is not a single information about saving gif with animation loop endless...

When you do use "save for web" and select GIF, on the bottom right, the loop mode can be selected. But i think i wouldn't matter to me if it's being set before saving the image.
I already tried to run the script, but somehow
"charIDToTID('Ordn')" for example won't run. Is this the same as charIDToTypeID? because i found charIDToTypeID is a function, but charIDToTID is not...
also the third line from the end, one of the functions seem not to work, i think....
But already you given me a real good answer to what i may try to search for, since i did not actually know that this is set within the timeline, i always used the option within the "save for web" dialog on the bottom-right.
I Solved my own problem ...
I just made Photoshop CC with a script log everything, then gotten to this:

Saving PDF with different option

Does anyone have a VBscript that opens a PDF and saving it with the option of "Reduce file size"

Adobe Reader does not allow saving filled-in forms, either with Save, or Print to PDF. Some forms don't fill properly with Preview (at least they didn't in Tiger), and Preview doesn't have many features (such as field descriptors), so Adobe Reader is sometimes the only option. The virtual printer lets you save filled-in form with Adobe Reader. If the form works with Preview, then the built-in Print to PDF can be used.

Are you able to furnish information about which files metadata is being saved - RAW files (XMP sidecar files in reality), JPEG, TIFF, PSD etc?

Properties metadata with dependecies in XML Forms

Hello!
I've created two properties metadata with dependencies, like product and subproduct, so these two properties are related to each other.
I tried to add these properties to a XML Forms, but when I add the product, the list is empty, doesn't show any of the predefined values. What can it be ?
And how do I add these two properties related in the XML Forms ? Do I need to do any other configuration to the properties ??

I suggest you try a simpilier direct approach as follows and verifiy it works. Often, the JDBC driver does not support getting meta data.
This example uses DatabaseMetaData to get data from an Oracle database. You will have to find an equivalent object to work with the database you are using.
