Saving/moving photos to Desktop

Hi,
I went and moved some photos last night to my desktop so that I could use them in an email as file attachments, and now when I don't want the photos on my desktop any longer and toss them in the recycle bin, the photos turn up missing on my PE Organizer.  I've tried renaming the photos, moving them back into Organizer (says the photos are already in Organizer), and nothing works.  What is the proper way (other than using the share way in Organizer to send via email) to put photos on the desktop w/o losing them in Organizer once I no longer need them on the desktop?  Thanks for your help!

Hi,  Thanks for your input, but that didn't solve my problem with trying to get rid of the moved files on my desktop.
I've tried 'exporting' the 15 photos to my desktop- instead of 'moving' them to my desktop- and they came up with the added hyphen -1; -2 etc. to the photos, because of the other 15 photos I moved there.  Again, when I delete the photos that I 'moved' from my desktop to the Recycle Bin - I get the 'missing file' in my Organizer.  I've exported other photos the way you described to the desktop - no problem when I deleted them to the Recycle Bin- they still are in my Organizer.  It has something to do with the fact that I 'moved' those 15 photos instead of exporting them to the desktop.  I have renamed them on the desktop and in the export mode, and that doesn't help.  It still comes up wanting me to keep those moved files on my desktop.   Any other ideas?  I would just consider deleting the photos, but they are of my granddaughter eating strawberries- and are so cute.  Thanks.

  • Difficulty in moving photos to desktop

Since updating to the latest edition of iPhoto I am no longer able to drag and drop a photo from within iPhoto to the desktop or indeed a folder on the desktop? Has something been done to iPhoto to prevent this or am I missing something?

That was not a solution or workaround but only a method to see if the original file was there.
Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and rebuild the library with only the option to Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions checked. Then try dragging a photo to the Desktop again.

  • TS2972 I am using Apple TV to wirelessly access photos from a folder on my desktop computer, but when I view them on my TV, some of the photos are upside down and sideways, even though I have flipped, cropped them, and saved them on my desktop. Help!

But they sometimes show up sideways or uspided down when viewing them on my tv, even thogh I have flipped and saved them in my desktop folder.  How can I view them in the same format as I have them saved in my computer?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try editing them in a different photo program.

  • How can I avoid having to save edited photos to desktop?

I use iPhoto '09 for organizing my photos and Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac for editing my photos, most of which are JPEGs. My procedure is to make a duplicate of the photo I wish to edit and then hand it off to PSE 6 for editing via the Edit in External Editor option.
I notice a strange phenomenon when saving my photos after editing them. Sometimes the photos can be saved directly to the same folder in which the unedited duplicate version resides (my preference), but more often I have to save the edited version to my desktop and then import it into my iPhoto program. I have not been able to discern a reason why I need to save the edited images to my desktop. The system seems arbitrary in this regard. I don't recall having this issue to deal with when I used iPhoto '06 and PSE 4 for Mac. I would appreciate somebody explaining this phenomenon and indicate how I can consistently save an edited photo directly to the folder in which the unedited version resides instead of having to save it to my desktop and then import it into iPhoto.
For your information I use iPhoto Library Manager.

A simple rule of thumb is: if the file format of the edited photo does not change due to the editing the file is saved to the Modified folder and viewed by iPhoto as if iPhoto did the editing. If the editing requires a format change, i.e. from jpg to psd then the new file must be saved to the desktop and imported as a new photo. The following expands on that:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
• How can I download photos from desktop to ipad2

How can I download photos from desktop to iPad2?

Not sure what you mean by it seems to have not recognized photos already on iPad 2.
There are two types of photos on your iPad 2 which are stored and handled completely separate.
Photos captured by your iPad, photos saved from a received email or from a website, and photos imported from a digital camera or from a digital camera's SD card using the iPad Camera Connection Kit are stored completely separate from photos transferred from your computer to your iPad, which is selected under the Photos tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes.
Photos transferred from your computer are stored in the iPad's Photo Library. If you transfer a single album or folder of photos or multiple albums or folders or photos, all photos transferred from your computer will appear twice on your iPad - once in the Photo Library where all photos transferred from your computer are stored, and once in the photo album or folder selected to be transferred to your iPad. The photos are not duplicated. Photos in the albums or folders include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. This way you can view all photos transferred from your computer by selecting Photo Library, or you can view the photos in an album or folder only by selecting the album or folder.

  • Moving photos from one iPhoto library to another

Is there a way to move photos from one iPhoto library to another? I tried to use export, and that puts the photos in the other iPhoto library (I can see the photo if I open Hard drive>user>pictures>iPhoto Library but when I open iPhoto it is not in that Library's library.
If I have not made myself clear, please ask and I'll try again.

Is there really no other way than via third party software??
Yes there is, detailed above: export from one, import to another.
I love using iPhoto but this is a real drawback.
    Wow, really?
I have bought an external disk so i can free the space on my laptop by moving photos and now I have to buy some software in order to do that??
You don't have to buy it. What's more the free version of iPhoto Library Manager will move up to 20 pics at a time. And the paid version is only $20.
BTW: you can run an entire library from the external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Saving / Moving Libraries in iPhoto

I don't remember how, but when I first got my macbook (the latest white one) I managed to tell iphoto to save all my images to plug in external hard drive. I now have a portable external hard drive and I've been finding it a nightmare to tell iphoto to stop saving my photos to my external plug in hard drive, but to my portable one instead. It isn't working. I've tried the whole holding down Alt while opening iphoto after having dragged the iphoto library to my portable external hard drive, but that hasn't worked.
Can anyone please help as it's driving me crazy?!?!
Ooh, I should probably mention it's iphoto '09.
    Thanks,
    Taya

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You're going to need to explain things a little better.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.
    To choose between Libraries:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    What's not working about this?

  • How do I free up space on my C drive by moving photos to a separate hard drive on the same pc?

    I need to free up space on my C Drive by moving photos to Seagate expansion (H) drive. Currently use Windows Vista and elements 11 where I have organiser containing folders and albums which I want to keep intact after the move. Photos are currently held in C:users, valued customer, pictures. I’m pretty ignorant on how to do this but have tried to read and follow the FAQs and previous advice and think I have some understanding(!) I have made a catalog back up onto a separate Seagate expansion drive (F) and although the files appear to have been renamed as ‘B0000001’ for example, I believe this is normal and I can also see a backup.tly and a catalog.buc file so I’m assuming the backup was successful. I think I need to take the following steps;
    1. drag and drop the folders containing my photos from the C drive into the (H) drive. (Does this have to be completed one folder at a time or can they all be highlighted and dragged and dropped in the same action)?
    2. As I’m not changing computer then I’m assuming I don’t need to restore the catalog?
    3. At this point I won’t have deleted anything off the C drive so how do I ensure the catalog establishes links with the photos that are now on the (H) drive if they’re still on the C drive?
    4. Once I know the photos are safely on the (H) drive and all links to the catalog have been established I’ll take a new backup of the catalog onto the separate Seagate expansion drive (F)
    5. Do I need to take a separate backup of the photos which are now on the (H) drive?
    6. I’ll then delete the photos on the C drive.
    7. In future any new photos I take and import into Element 11 organiser, I’ll save on the (H) drive.
Have I got the steps right? Any help would be appreciated as I don’t want to lose anything.
    Thanks.

    It's much simpler:

Yes, the renaming is normal and the fact you can see a backup.tly file is good. However, even if you are 99% sure that the backup is ok, the only way to be 100% sure would be to restore somewhere else... (being somewhat paranoid!)
    I think I need to take the following steps;
    1. drag and drop the folders containing my photos from the C drive into the (H) drive. (Does this have to be completed one folder at a time or can they all be highlighted and dragged and dropped in the same action)?
Dragging a master folder also drags its subfolders, no problem.
    2. As I’m not changing computer then I’m assuming I don’t need to restore the catalog?
No, no need to do that. When you move (by drag and drop or the move menu) the organizer automatically updates the catalog.
    3. At this point I won’t have deleted anything off the C drive so how do I ensure the catalog establishes links with the photos that are now on the (H) drive if they’re still on the C drive?
The drag and drop procedure really moves, that is to say : copies the files to the new location AND deletes the files in the old location. Note that if there is a problem in the file transfer, the original files won't be deleted. The transfer of big libraries can require several hours. That happened to me with a power outage at 95% of the process. The files already copied stayed on the new computer, the original files were not deleted and the database of the catalog rolled back to the initial situation as if I had done nothing. So dragging and dropping is safe, at least on recent PSE versions.

    Thanks.
If you take a new backup, it will include all the files recorded in the catalog. If you still have pictures on your C: drive, and possibly others on other external drives, everything will be backed up. You can't specify a backup for images in a given disk, only for all images in a catalog. For instance, you can move only a part of your images on your C: drive. You can add pictures in the drive you want, C: or H:

  • Using iPad 2 photos and have not found key to organizing or moving photos  from one album to another existing album

With ipad2 I have been almost successful in moving photos from the stream or roll to separate albums. It takes the commands but does not allow last step. What am I missing?

If you are wanting to copy photos from your computer to the iPad then you need to select all the folders that you want to copy together in one go - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are removed by not including them in the next photo sync, so on each photo sync you need to select all the photos that you want to remain on the iPad. So you will only do one photo sync to copy them.
So when you connect the iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes, on the right-hand side on the Photos tab you need to select the parent folder under each those 100 folders are directly under - each of those 100 folders will then get their own album on the iPad. The folder to album relationship only works to 1 level i.e. if those folders have sub-folders in them then their photos will go into the parent's album on the iPad

  • Moving photos between projects

I'm having a problem - erratically - moving photos from one project to another. When I select one photo & drag it to a different project - the entire project gets moved instead of just the one selected photo. (I've double checked that there are no photos selected before I select the photo that I want to move.)
If I cancel the move, I end up with missing thumbnails & sometimes missing photos.
This is erratic because sometimes dragging one photo to another project works.

It is really hard to tell what might be happening - we need more details:
What is your Aperture version? The most recent Aperture 3.4.1?
Are your images referenced or managed? Raw or jpegs?
How did you edit them? With Aperture or an external editor?
Do you create new versions when editing and stack them, or edit the current version?
And after moving to a new project, the preview of the version shows the original master, but the thumbnail shows the original edits? Is that correct?
I Suspect, when you moved the images, they lost their previews. As a test, duplicate an image version (Photo > Duplicate Version) and force the generation of a new preview (Ctrl-click, hold down the options key ⌥, select "Generate Preview"). Does that bring back the edits? Also you could try to export the image version ans see, if the edits are still there.

The confusing part is that Mail is doing this inconsistently.
Take a look at this article and see if it helps eventhough it is written for Mac OS X 10.5 it should be true for other versions.
Look at the point about directing Mail to a location for Sent mail and see if that helps.
