Saving multiple Midi takes

Is it possible to record a midi part, do it again and compare the two? Similar to what can be done with audio in LP8? I want to record a part several times, alternate riffs, etc and choose the best.

I appreciate your comments but my issue was in editing the already recorded tracks. If you can find in those pages where it shows how to view all the data from the already recorded multiple MIDI tracks at the same time in the piano roll window and be able to edit them I'd be much obliged if you would point those out to me. I double checked your recommendation after reading your first reply, the answer I needed was not there.
Evidently you can only select and view one region at a time no matter how many there are in the same track. I have searched the LE 8 pdf manual and also searched thru an Apple Logic Pro Training series book for version 7 JIC it had some additional insight into this particular issue and came up empty, that's why I was asking for additional insight on this panel. I always go to the documentation first - RTFM is first call for me.
I've already figured the workaround and I'll know better next time to allow Logic to create its own multiple take folders so as far as I'm concerned this case is closed. Thank you again for your input.

  • Multiple MIDI takes on the same track - can only find one in the editor?

    After making several passes on an instrument track w/drum sampler on it I opened the piano roll editor to edit the data only to find only one of the passes represented there. I could only find the other passes when I moved the current one out of the track temporarily. There must be a better way to do this, can anyone hip me to the right way to edit all the data in the multiple passes at the same time? I can hear all the data, I just can't see all of it.
    I'm doing this so I only have to instantiate the Virtual Instrument once in the session, CPU is always at a premium these days. I have done the bulk of my work in recent years in ProTools but I have found Logic Express 8 to be far more efficient with CPU load on my core 2 duo Macbook. I suspect I'm just missing something but I cannot seem to figure it out. Help?

  • Why can't I mute or solo multiple midi takes separately?

    This just seems like such a major bug, I wonder why there are not more complaints? On any other DAW I've used (which is many) you can create multiple takes from one midi instrument, then mute or solo each take and edit as desired. Not so with Logic Pro X? Creating multiple tracks will play all regions simultaneously (totally useless unless drum programming?). Why on earth can't you create a number of midi takes and edit however you wish? Is there a way to mute each track separately?
    Here is an ideal workflow that I would like to accomplish with Logic:
    Play Keyboard vsti -> record multiple takes via cycle -> edit takes, comp and mute others. Is there no way to do this?

    Hi, thanks for posting the link. It's helpful but a pretty convoluted way of working. And, his method creates a new track with a new vsti, not great if you want to limit unnecessary cpu drain, especially for big vsti's.
    I am finding some other workarounds which include turning tracks on/off--which can be done easily with a keyboard command: option M. The on/off buttons then appear on the tracks as well.
    You can also make a keyboard command for "Mute Notes/Regions/Folders on/off" so you can select specific regions and mute while leaving the other regions and tracks from a vsti on.

  • Using multiple MIDI-in sources - can you now select the incoming MIDI port?

    Exciting to see that Logic Pro X has launched at last!
    I'm hoping someone who has already had a chance to download it can report back on a specific feature.
    In previous versions of Logic, the only way to record multiple MIDI sources (for example a V-Drums kit and a keyboard) at the same time has been to make sure they are on different MIDI channels, and then choose the "auto demix MIDI channels" option in preferences.
    In this way, the MIDI data is separated by channel and recorded to separate tracks.
    However, it only separates the channels when two or more tracks are armed for recording, and does not offer any option for selecting the specific MIDI port for incoming MIDI signals.
    DAWs such as Cubase and ProTools have always had a drop-down menu for MIDI channels, where the MIDI port can be chosen. This way, you can easily separate your MIDI controllers for either jamming or recording, and they will only play virtual instruments on tracks which are selected to their specific channel. This applies for recording as well as just jamming or trying parts prior to recording.
    I have several hardware synths in my studio and often record MIDI jams with multiple players, and on that basis moved back to Cubase last year. I have been hoping Logic would update this feature for a long, long time!
    Can anyone who is using Logic Pro X already confirm whether MIDI tracks now have a port select option, or whether the old channel-based system and the clumsy "auto demix MIDI channels" method remains...?
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Guys, this is really quite simple to accomplish in the midi environment, susprised you've been hunting for so long for the answers, here's a quick step by step:
    1. Go into Midi Environment
    2. Change the view in the Environment window to show Click & Ports
    3. To make things easier, click the 'Input Notes' label, and delete the object.  And also click the 'Input View' label, and delete that also, so you're left with a blank canvas.  (These are handy tools when testing, just deleting them to make things clearer).
    You should now be left with just the Sequencer Input  (And midi click, but ignore that) - Basically anything that connects into this input goes through as an input into logic... So, all we have to do now is to split each device into seperate channels.  This is simply done through the 'transform' objects.
    4. Add 2x Transformer objects via the 'new' menu (Or however many external inputs you need).
    5. Drag the connection from each device listed on the left, to it's own transformer as shown:
    6. Then plug each transformer into the Sequencer input
    7. Double click each Transformer object and simply FIX the midi channel to be whatever you desire, in this example i've picked channel 2 and channel 3
    8. Now, just make sure the 'Auto demix by channel if multitrack record' option is selected in project settings, and you're good to go!
    Now just simply select the channel number that corresponds to the devices you transformed, and when more than one track is armed for recording it will be split to how you would like.  *Please take note, that the demix only kicks in when multitracking, i.e. more than one track is armed*
    Now, this seems really long winded on a forum with screenshots etc. - But it's truly not, takes about 30 seconds, and once you've done it a few times makes sense.  Plus going through an environment like this opens up possibilites such as splitting one midi keyboard into different zones which can transmit to different channels, so you can have bass on your left hand, and lead on the right for example.  But the midi data will split to each track when recording.
    Reply back if you get stuck, more than happy to help!

    Hi all
    Hope to get some help with Elements Organizer.
    I have 12-15 years of digital photos that I now want to import into my newly aquirede Adobe Elements Organizer / Photoshop. Since my Nikon names the files with continous numbers from 0001 to 9999 I have multiple files with the same name although they are not alike at all. My previous software had no problems with that since I keep the photos in separate file folders based on import date. I generally import photos after each event and so name the folder with the date and some event info (e.g. 2014.12.24 - Christmas at grandparents).
    That is a common situation, I have the same limitation for files not going over 9999 on my Canons...
    Now - when I import my photos into Elements Organizer I get a lot of error messages with "same name exist .....) Hmmmmmmm
    Please sate the exact wording of the error message, I have never seen a message stating 'same name exist...' or equivalent; only messages about files already in the catalog. Files already in the catalog mean that some files have the same 'date taken' and file size in Kb.
    Any suggestions. I'm using a mac and tried to rename files based on date taken. The mac can do that but it takes ages to go into each folder and run the renaming script there.
    I also use a similar folder creation scheme (such a date naming is the default for the downloader). That way I never get a message about duplicates for the same file names.
    However - I can't be the first or only person with this problem so I figure that some workaround must be known out there. Maybe the import action can recognize date taken or - well. Thank you very much in advance if you can help me out here.
    You can alsways set the downloader to rename the imported files with a unique new name, there are many options in the 'advanced' dialog of the downloader. I don't know about Macs, but I don't thing there is a difference.

  • How do I create multiple midi tracks each with separate external synthesizer sound

    Mac Pro OS 10.10.2, Logic Pro 10.1.1, FireFace 800 (updated), Roland XP-30 synthesizer/keyboard, Mackie mixer.
    XP-30 analog output to Mackie, FireFace monitor to FireFace main inputs and FireFace out to Mackie.
    What I can't get to work: Sound output for monitoring as I record on each of several midi tracks, each with access to my banks/programs.
    Logic automatically set up the multi-instrument and created 16 tracks, visible in the mixer window. I have entered custom banks for the XP-30 and they are working.
    Mt problem is two parts. First, my last experience was with Logic Pro 7 way back.
    Problem two is that when I create midi tracks (except for the first one I created on channel 1) by control-clicking on one of the tracks in the mixer window I get no sound for monitoring. I can see the green monitor indicator for the track shows midi data incoming. I just can't hear it. It's as if there is no designated output. I have checked audio preferences and see the FireFace as input and output device. If i change the channel to channel 1, I get the sound, but then I have two tracks on channel 1 which doesn't work for designating unique sounds to each track.
    I can select "All" for channel and get monitored sound on several tracks; however, they then all play the same sound, of course.
    i can create midi tracks (either instrument or external) using the plus icon, but no matter how i set them up that way, they do not allow me access to my banks/programs.
    In logic Pro 7 it was no problem creating multiple midi tracks, each with a different sound assigned to it. In Logic Pro 10, I am baffled regarding how to accomplish this and get it all to work as simply and nicely as I was able to with #7.
    Make sense? Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    I have it set to Performance mode which according to the owners manual: "This mode makes the XP-30 function as a multitimbral sound
    source, and Performance settings can be modified. If you’re
    using an external MIDI device to control the XP-30 in this
    mode, it will function as a multitimbral sound source."

  • Multiple MIDI Command Playlists

    I'm looking to control my guitar effects, audio back tracks, and eventually lights with logic pro. I've seen how to write midi data and automate it, but that is just for one song. How would I have access to multiple files/songs of midi automation in a live setup. On triggering end, I would have a midi foot switch with about 3 buttons and program them 1: previous song 2: play song 3: next song. But how would I set that up in Logic to be able to use a midi controller to scroll through multiple Midi automation files? Is there a way to make a playlist of midi/audio tracks in one logic file?
    Message was edited by: Nick727

    well, ive done that already.. But you see, Im setting up a internet radio station using automator to change playlists automaticly.. So I want a few different party shuffle playlists already set up so i can just trigger those at a sheduled time.
    Maybe there is a way to switch the party shuffle input playlist within automator??

  • Multiple MIDI tracks to one instrument?

    The plugin is Ultrabeat.
    I like putting the kick onto one MIDI track
    the snare into another MIDI track,
    hats on another, etc....
    Problem is, all of the MIDI tracks that route to the Ultrabeat
    are the actual instrument track that has the plugin inserted onto it.
    So MUTING one track mutes all the audio coming out of
    the Ultrabeat Instrument track.
    An attempt at a workaround is: create a Multi-instrument
    in the Environment, and connect it to the Ultrabeat.
    But then MUTING the MIDI tracks doesn't do anything.
    The MIDI tracks play even when MUTED.
    So I'm guessing Region Muting is the way we do it?
    Selecting individual regions for muting and solo-ing
    instead of muting and soloing the track ?
    So..the MUTE button on a MIDI track is there for...NO REASON.
    It's just a button that doesn't do anything.
    Well.. this MIDI track has muted and non-muted regions on it.
    I guess I'll need to remember which ones are muted and which
    are not ?
    This couldn't possibly have been something that was thought over
    and planned.
    Nobody in their right mind would design it this way on purpose.
    A solution would be to allow MIDI tracks to be MUTED using the 'M' button

    Are you talking about MIDI track on external MIDI?
    your question seems to be related with Instrument tracks...
    there many Muting possibilities in Logic...
    I suggest to read the manual serch for "mute track"
    As you can see in the manual there are tons of pages and paragraphs about MUTE function in Logic Pro... so I cannot explain all the way to MUTE a Midi or Audio
    I can only say that Instruments tracks are not the same as External MIDI track device... *but Muting Instrument track is very similar as Audio and Midi mixed together functions*
    'cause the Instruments channels strips are AUDIO CHANNELs STRIPs!
    Maybe the following pictures can help
    Try to change setting with the one shown below
    CPU-savings is not the correct therm and maybe this is caused of misunderstanding...
    this set allow you to individually mute the duplicate tracks...
    _+The "M" button that you are metioned in your post will works as you need.+_
    I'm trying to replay to the O.P question
    multiple MIDI tracks to one instrument?
    if you need to mute individually tracks of a single instrument the last pictures shows the best setting to achieve the result that you are looking for.

  • Simple question - multiple midi tracks in matrix editor

    call me stupid but i am finding the matrix editor window quirky as!
    I want to bring up multiple midi tracks simultaneously in the matrix editor but for some reason most of the time it will only show one, then sometimes mysteriously multiple appear - woo hoo! I have tried clicking and unclicking every combination of link window button to no avail. As I understand it one should have the purple link button selected (or no link, but not the yellow one) and then shift select or marquee the multiple midi tracks for them to show simultaneously....why does this not work it is so basic??!! all the tracks are different audio instruments on different channels so what's the problem?
    thanks for the help

    You have to read the manual really carefully.
    The trick is double clicking: when you double-click in the background of matrix editor, it will show all tracks, when you double-click a single note, you will only see the notes of the track it belongs to.
    There is a menu item that says something like "Show only selected regions". If you select that and double click in the matrix editor's background, you won't see all regions, but only the ones you selected.

  • Multiple MIDI Sequencers In Java Applet?

    Hi all,
    I'm working on a music applet and need to have multiple MIDI sequencers playing simultaneously. I have some test code and it works in my IDE (I'm using JGrasp) but when I try to open the applet in a web browser, it doesn't play the sequencers at the same time. It only plays one sequencer at a time and switches (seems to be random) back and forth between them instead of just letting them both play together. Is there any reason why two (or more) sequencers won't play together in an applet when they do in JGrasp? Is this just simply a limitation within applets or is there some kind of work around to fix this?
    I know you can do different tracks/channels in a single sequencer, but I really need it to be separate sequencers playing simultaneously... Without getting into too much music/drum theory, I'm making a polyrhythm metronome and need to have different sequencers playing at different tempos (which you can't do with a single sequencer). If anyone has any ideas on how to get multiple sequencers to play nicely together in an applet that would be greatly appreciated.

    I just tried implementing the sequencers in their own threads but unfortunately it gives exactly the same results, where it works in JGrasp but not in the web browser.
    Here's the threaded version:
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.sound.midi.*;
    public class MetronomeTestApplet extends JApplet
         MetronomeTest metronome1;
         MetronomeTest metronome2;
         public void init()
              metronome1 = new MetronomeTest(50, 115);          // (tempo, instrument)          115 = woodblock
              metronome2 = new MetronomeTest(100, 117);          // (tempo, instrument)          117 = melodic tom
              metronome1.start();
              metronome2.start();
         public void destroy()
              metronome1.close();
              metronome2.close();
    class MetronomeTest extends Thread
         Sequencer sequencer=null;
         Sequence sequence=null;
         Track track=null;
         MidiEvent newEvent=null;
         int volume = 90;
         int tempo = 100;
         public MetronomeTest(int tempo, int instrument)
              this.tempo = tempo;
              try
              {     sequencer = MidiSystem.getSequencer();
                   sequencer.open();
                   sequence = new Sequence(Sequence.PPQ, 16);
                   track = sequence.createTrack();
                   ShortMessage instrumentMsg = new ShortMessage();
                   instrumentMsg.setMessage(ShortMessage.PROGRAM_CHANGE, 0, instrument, 0);
                   track.add(new MidiEvent(instrumentMsg, 0));
              catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); }
         public void close()
              sequencer.stop();
              sequencer.close();
         public void run()

                        track.add(new MidiEvent(noteOffMsg, 16 + 16*i));

  • Multiple MIDI Inputs Yet???

    Can anyone tell me if LP8 offers multiple MIDI inputs? I use the step sequencer from my Elektron Monomachine for pattern creation and would like to be able to assign the external tracks from it to instrument tracks hosting either native or 3rd party plug-ins. Untill I can assign MIDI to Logic Instruments and third party AU Instruments from multiple channels, I am forced to use another app (Ableton Live at present) for song creation and only use logic for post production of said track. Would much rather keep it all in one app from creation to stage performance!!!

    I have found an answer to my problem. In the following link I found this post that allowed me to play multiple instruments from an external step sequencer. I have been trying to figure this one out for ever and just kept giving up with the environment. Now I can finally use logic the way I always wanted to!!!
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1078171&tstart=30
    Here is the post...replace "MIDI Keyboard" with "Sequencer Track" and you can see how this worked for me...
    This method assumes that One MIDI Keyboard is sending on MIDI channel 1 and the other is sending on MIDI channel 2.
    In the Environment, go to the "Clicks and Ports" Layer. My MIDI "signal" path is:
    Physical Input-->Input Note (a keyboard)-->Input View (Monitor Object)-->
    "to Recording and Thru"
    (See p. 207 of the LPReference for more on the "The MIDI Signal Path")
    What I would suggest is this:
    Create a "Channel Splitter" object from the "New" menu. Then cable the MIDI output of the Input Note (the Keyboard object) to the Channel Splitter. This is a second MIDI output cable from the Keyboard, make sure the keyboard object remains connected to the Input View (monitor object).
    Now create two "Alias" objects. In the Alias' Parameters box, set the "Reference" box to the Audio Instrument you want to hear when you play the MIDI channel 1 keyboard. (There are other ways to do this without alias objects as well.)
    Now cable the MIDI channel 1 output of the Channel Splitter (second from the top) to the Alias of Audio Instrument (the one to be heard when playing the Keyboard on MIDI channel 1).
    Create a second Alias, set its Reference to the second Audio Instrument and cable the Channel Splitter's MIDI channel 2 output to the Alias.
    Now go the Arrange. Create a new track and Assign its output (click-hold on the name of the track) and select the "Input Notes" object (mine was under the "Clicks and Ports" submenu). Now when you've got the Input Notes track selected in the Arrange, the MIDI notes will be sent to the Audio Instruments based on MIDI Channel. You can record the notes on the Input Notes track. Later, you can "Demix" the notes and put the Demixed regions onto the tracks of the appropriate Audio Instrument.
    End Post
    For now I am using only one port on my AMT8 for input, the next step will be to try multiple port / multiple sequencer input scheme and see how that setup works...
    Hope this is helpful to someone

    I know that while I'm composing an email the program automatically saves a copy of that message to the drafts folder. This copy is updated while I'm composing the message. But recently, as I'm composing a message, the same composition is saved multiple times in the Drafts folder. So, if it took me 10 or 15 minutes to compose an email I'll have at least 4 or 5 separate copies of the email in different stages saved to my Drafts folder. When I send the email it will save a copy in my Sent folder, but won't remove the same email from my Drafts folder.
    Has anyone else had a problem like that? Have suggestons on what's going on and how to fix it?
    Thanks...

    What type of account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)? If IMAP or .Mac, what are your settings in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors for Drafts and Sent?

  • Multiple midi ports....When will this happen?!

    So frustrating that there is still no multiple midi ports yet. I've been a long time user and am considering switching to Cubase because of this as I can not use Logic with VE Pro the way it is intended to be used. Will this ever be an option? Kind of defeats the whole purpose of VE Pro to have to open up multiple instances in Logic.

    I agree. Logic Physical Input supports Multiple Ports however the Sequencer does not. The Logic Sequencer is limited to record up to 16 MIDI Channels coming from Any Port. The alternative is to direct cable the Physical Input Ports to Channel Splitters in the Environment and wire them to different Channel Strips. In this scenario you can wire up to say 256 Instruments cabled from different Physical MIDI Ports. If you want to Mixdown the incoming MIDI Ports you have to bounce in real time.

  • Trouble receiving multiple MIDI channels

    Hi everyone.... I am trying to dump some sequences from my Roland MC-505 Groovebox into Logic Pro. I set up eight tracks in Logic and assigned them each to a different channel of my Digi002 (my MIDI port), but when I play the Groovebox into Logic, ALL channels are routed into only whatever track happens to be selected in the Arrange area.
    Does anybody know how I can receive the different channels on their respective tracks? Is there an easier way I can go about this all together?
    Thanks,
    scotty

  • Saving multiple images while in bridge after editing in CR

    I have a question involving saving multiple images while in Bridge after they were edited in camera raw PS CS4.  I usually view my images in Bridge and select the ones I want to edit in camera raw.  I then open the images in camera raw and make the edits which I want to the first image of the group.  I then click on the select all button on the top left corner.  I then click on the sychronize button and choose the edits from CR which I want to carry through the whole group of images.  I then click on the save images button on the bottom left of the CR page.  This now brings me back to bridge where I'm looking at the images in their edited version.
    This is where the question begins.  At this point, I thought the edited made in CR were saved to the images folder located on my computer.  But up to this point when Ive gone back to the image folder and looked at the images they were still in their original unedited state although the edited versions showed up in Bridge.
    At the point, where I am looking at the edited photos in bridge, do I have to go through another step to save the edited images in Bridge so they will transfer over to the image folder where the images are stored in my computer?

    I was looking for the metdata in another window.  Ok . I found it and HQ thumbs was checked already.  I can see the edits from CR in the Bridge window.
    After I check save image in CR, does the edited info get saved only to Bridge or should that be saved all the way to my image folder?
    The problem is that when I exist Bridge and look in the image folder the changes I made in CR are not there.  How do I get those changes from CR saved to my computer (my pictures)?
