Saving music from iTunes library to an external drive so I can upload to my vehicle

I am trying to download my music from itunes and store on a flash drive or mp3 player. My car has a component that allows you to upload your music and it will be stored in the music collection. Lately, I've been burning CDs then uploading but this is very time consuming. Can you download your music from itunes to a flashdrive or mp3 player? If so, how is this done.

Hi Tosca,
Flash drives differ a bit in style and form factor, but the main thing to look for is storage capacity.  if you haven't shopped for a flash drive in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised in how many Gigs they can hold for not too much $$.
When you copy files from iTunes to a flash drive, it is a plain copy with no format conversion.  If your target system needs MP3, make sure they are in MP3 in iTunes before you start.  Some car players can handle other formats too.  If anything needs to be converted, see this document:

If you right mouse and select Get info it will show you the Apple ID used to purchase these songs.
Usually the name of an apple id is based on the email. So knowing that you may have forgotten the Apple ID password.

How to transfer iTunes library to an external drive (thats easy!) but keeping the playlists musics on the computer?
    Many thanks!

Select a single song with a broken link, press CTRL+I to Get Info, cancel when asked to locate the track and take a look at the Summary tab. Post back where iTunes is looking for the file. It begins file://localhost
    Where is it really?
Please post back both paths so that I can make suggestions. Full paths please, exact spellings, you can replace your user name with <User> if needed.

  • Updated iPhoto could no longer use the music from iTunes library for slideshow

Anybody checked if you can still use your music from iTunes library for slideshows?
After updating both iPhoto and iTunes to the latest version in Mavericks, all music links in the iPhoto's slideshows became invalid. Tried even to re-establish the music links, but it seems like the iPhoto would not play any music from the iTunes library. Only the sample music from iPhoto is usable. The iTunes works fine by the way.
    Thanks a lot!

I think I found a workaround that seemed to correct the problem. In iTunes, go to the File menu and choose Library. Then select Organize Library. Next choose Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media".  Click OK.

  • Moving iTunes library to an external drive.

My startup disk is full so I would like to move my iTunes library to an external drive to fee up space.  What is the best way to do this?

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

  • Moving iTunes library to an external drive converting to different format

I want to move entire iTunes library to an external drive. I've found several Mac 101's to help but those helps makes no sense. I should be able to move music to another drive and give iTunes the path to find it but that does not work.
All files are iTunes Plus including everything from Amazon but I want to convert everything to a mp3 or other format so all files are independent of iTunes. Lots of old music from CDs I imported and lots from iTunes as well as Amazon. I guess i could sit and burn everything to a physical cd but that would take months and hundreds and hundreds of cds. Can someone advise how I can convert these files and then move to an external drive?
I'm running mountain lion and version 10.7 of iTunes. Two external drives and 145 gigs of music. Any guidance will be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

    HI Limnos,
Thanks for the reply. Something I forgot (age) to mention, this quest to move the library is precipitated by the Mac drive is running out of space. While I still have about 50 gigs of room left, I was thinking I should just plan on opening up the space by moving the iTunes library.
The other reason is, I read an article about how upon ones death one can not bequeath ones digital music or book files to loved ones.  IE; If all of the music was on LP's, tapes, cd's then this physical format can be left in ones final will. But according to what I read and trying to read the user policy by Apple, Amazon etc when one downloads music or a book or whatever that use policy says we don't own the material we only can read it or listen to it. When we die it dies with us. Several people in the article as well as myself believe this is crap. At one time I was purchasing content and then burning it. I stopped because I thought how silly to burn it, I have back ups on an external drive. Man was I wrong. If I have to I'll sit here in my last days and burn hundreds of cd's.
So realizing this, I want to take all my music files and save them to another drive as though this drive was hundreds of cd's. That way all those files in some other format can be played independent of iTunes or transfered to one of my kids PC's or a Mac if they get with the program.  If the conversion process destroys the integrity of the file then I have no choice but to burn cd's.
In my estimation, I'm doing nothing wrong. I bought downloadable music just as if I'd bought cd's. I should be able to throw it away or give to my kids upon my death. The kids can decide what they want to do with it once I'm gone. I now no longer buy any music or books in a digital download. All content is purchased with a physical copy. That said, more content providers are moving towards downloads only or like Amazon and Apple towards the cloud and streaming. I realize all this gets into the fair use act but I think most people are unaware of this issue.

  • HT1373 How do I backup my itunes library to an external drive

My iTunes library is unstable.  I have two questions:
    1) How do I backup my iTunes library to an external drive?
    2) Why am I constatntly prompted to add my computer to iCloud when I have done so multiple times?
When opening iTunes, I receive he error message: "Please Sign In Again,  iTunes Match has encountered an error.  Please choose Sign Out and he Sign In from the iTunes Store menu and try again."
I tried downloading and installing/repairing the latest iTunes.  That did not correct the problem.
Also, I have sync'd to iCloud.  Every time I select iMatch from iTunes, I am prompted to Add This Computer to iCloud.  I have already done this multiple times.

    Hello cijackson,
You posted your question in the iTunes for Mac Forum. You may get better results on the iTunes for Windows forum. Best of luck > https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_for_windows?view=overview

  • Moving iTunes Library to an external drive.  My itunes cant connect to the library

I have tried to move my iTunes Library to an external drive.  When I open the iTunes app i can not get the app to read the library on the external drive.  I have gone into iTunes preferences and redirected the app to read the external file and I still look as though I have a "New iTunes program" with no music, apps, videos etc.
    Thanks all!

If you moved the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder, hold "Option" and launch iTunes.
Select "Choose library" then select the iTunes folder you moved.
You do not need to change the iTunes media folder location in iTunes prefs > Advanced.

  • Itunes Library on An External Drive

    Hi All,
I've been reading a few tutorials on how to setup an itunes library on an external drive and wish to ask a question that I haven't seen covered yet...
I have a desktop PC running win XP with which we connect 2 ipods to our library regularly to update (we both have laptops but are happy to let the home computer maintain our music collections). I have a few different external drives that I connect to this computer at different times. In addition I have a number of internal hard drives that I plug into my system when working on different projects or when I want to do backups. The end result is that the drive I wish to use for my music and (including itunes folders) is not always given the same designation (ie. M:drive) every time I plug it in due to other devices connected to the system.
Sooo my question is will I have to point itunes to the folder on the newly designated drive each time such a situation occurs? If so does that process take long or are there any alternatives I can setup in order to eliminate any problems.
I had considered manually designating the external drive myself using windows disk management snapin however this would be tedius and painful to teach others that want to use it.
    Thanks for any advice given
    Cheers
    Matt

Thanks for your replies guys. I have gone ahead and tried to assign a drive letter to the drive I wish to use. Following the instructions here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844 on how to assign I get to stage 6 and find the "Assign the following drive letter " to be ghosted out. I can however change (as opposed to add) the drive letter without problem. After experimenting a bit I've found this drive reassigns itself to the new changed letter(Z:) after I unplug and plug it back in as well as after rebooting.
Would I be correct in assuming that this has done the same job and now regardless of what other drives I have attached to the pc at any time this drive will always be assigned Z:?
    Thanks very much
