Saving or opening a download to the desktop

How do you save a downloaded file to open or save directly to the desktop and not in the download folder???

This is dangerous in the fact that a driveby download can appear on your Desktop and be more tempting to click to see what it is.
Preferably it's best to keep downloads in the Downloads folder, then to keep it empty at all times unless in active use.
This way you know and remember that what's in the Downloads folder is potentially hazardous to your machine.

IPhoto auto-starts when I try to open an attachment on the desktop

A friend has a MacBook (12/07) and is using iPhoto 7.1.5 (just updated). They use Yahoo mail and all of the attachments they receive download to the desktop.
When they try to open these attachments, iPhoto opens, tries to import the attachments, then leaves an error message. I'm guessing that it's "pilot error" on their part (new Mac users and not computer proficient). They probably made a choice, when prompted, that led to this problem, but I can't find how to get out of it.
I've spent several hours searching for the answer to this problem, but have had no luck. We've tried various things suggested for troubleshooting in iPhoto, but nothing's worked.
I'd appreciate any help this great site has to offer. Thanks.

Have then select one of the photos and type Command+i. In the Info window that comes up check to see which application is set as the default application. If it's iPhoto therein lies the problem. Regardless of what is set for the default select Preview and click on the Apply to All... button. See if that will fix the problem.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I had been having a similar problem on Lion with Safari pdf files despite downloading the latest Adobe Reader XI.
I would constantly get the same messages - There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired. And I would get a blank page when I tried to print the pdf if I tried printing from the Safari web page using File - Print from the top toolbar on my laptop.
Then I came across the grey Safari lozenge with action icons.
This allowed me, without downloading the pdf, to print the pdf file direct from the Safari page by using the Print icon on the grey lozenge that appears centrally three quarters down the screen.
Then I discovered that if I save the pdf using the Save icon from this same grey lozenge on the Safari page I can open and print this pdf version from my desktop.
I've tested it with a couple of different pdf files and these methods work using the grey lozenge icons but the same pdfs files don't work using File - Save As on the Tool Bar.

My system preferences won't load. It opens straight up to the desktop folder and pictures won't load, leaving me with a color wheel. I've tried restarting my computer and that doesn't help. System preferences just won't open/load at all. Any ideas?

Have you researched the site you mentioned? I went to it and WOT gave me a red flag.

How do I deselect the box "open internet files on the desktop", to allow me to open tiles only in METRO view?

At some point or another I clicked "allow" for my firefox to cease opening windows in the app view of my Microsoft Surface Pro. They currently are only opening on the desktop view. How do i switch this back to the app view?

Let me rephrase my problem: even from the tiled start screen, if i click on the app icon, it brings me back to my desktop. I much prefer the app version of fire fox. The desktop view is hard to read because everything is tiny and i cant swipe to change between firefox screens.
Does this make sense at all?
With internet explorer it was as simple as Settings>internet options>programs> uncheck the box titled "open internet explorer tiles on desktop".

Problem opening Office documents from the desktop

Hi all,
I'm a new Mac user who just installed the Student/Teacher edition of Office for Mac 2004 (yes, i removed the trial version first), and I'm having trouble opening my documents when I double click the icons on the desktop. I get an error message that says "Unexpected error occured (error code -10660)". I can only open the docs if I open the appropriate program first.
Is this normal for a Mac? My PowerBook is only 1 month old, and I don't want my unfamiliarity w/Macs to cloud a serious problem if there is one.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I learned something new:
I hit Control+Click and selected Open With and clicked Word, and I got a new error message telling me that I couldn't use that application b/c it was in the trash. The only thing in my Trash is my Test Drive version, which just expired. When I dragged the Test Drive folder to my desktop, I was able to double click any Office doc and open it directly.
I've clearly made a mistake in uninstalling the Test Drive version. How can I fix this, and do I need to remove (and re-install) my complete version of Office to do so?

I can not open up itunes using the desktop icon

I have installed, uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version if itunes. I cannot get itunes to open up by clicking on the desktop icon. I keep getting the message"Do you want to allow this program to make changes?" The program is Apple Inc. I click on yes but nothing happens. I have set itunes to run as the adminstrator. Can anyone help me?

We'd better check to see if it's a compatibility mode issue.

Stray jnlp files gets downloaded onto the desktop when using Safari on MAC.

We are using jdk 1.4 webstart and safari browser on a mac machine.
Once the web start begins a jnlp file gets downloaded on to the desktop but does not get deleted. This happens each time the webstart begins thus the desktop is cluttered with stray .jnlp files each time web start is used.
Is there any workaround such that these files don't get downloaded at all or gets deleted once the web start closes?

There was a change in my desktop drag and drop post Lion update! Cannot drag or download to the desktop per se. It has to go into the desktop window in the finder now?

It is odd: pre update (the latest) I could download to my literal desktop, or drag and drop a photo from iPhoto, an mp3 to mail later from iTunes.....Now I can only do that from within the finder in the "desktop" window. In other words: If I download (I prefer to download onto my desktop rather than the download folder-window. What do you mean by loaded onto the Desktop? Are you referring to a changing desktop picture?
Or do you mean stop iPhoto from playing the slideshow full screen? Use the Escape key.

Some notes do not open or download from the cloud

Hi, does anyone know why the PAGES APP does not let me share or download all of my notes from the cloud. Or a way to download all the notes in one go. I updated my ipad recently, and the notes just disappeared off the devide, but remain in the cloud.
