Saving OSX 10.3.9 Appleworks to ASIP 6.3 takes forever

Hi, I am asking this question for one of our elementary underpaid overworked 3.9 hour tech people. Any help would be appreciated. We are all Xserve at our school so my expertise has fallen by the wayside.
He has a G3 Tower, 350 Mhz, 340 MB RAM, running ASIP 6.3. Open transport 2.7.9, TCP 2.7.9, Appletalk 6.0.
When the emac client running 10.3.9 creates an Appleworks Wordprocessing with a sentence and one picture, it takes a couple of minutes to save. This happens from numberous machines, some even 10.4. So, we feel it is not a specific client. We have not ruled out the network, but it seems the connectivity between the client and server is where we are having problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

That looks a little light on RAM for a Server if there is any load on it. I found the compute power was not an issue -- a beige G3 works fine as long as it has a fast-ish disk drive. Note that the beige G3 models ALL support 3 * 256 MB DIMMs, despite what Apple says in it documentation, and the Blue & White G3 supports 4 * 256 MB.
Are they using a Blue & White rev 1 with IDE drives on the built-in Bus? There are some potential issues there, especially writing large amounts of data in a hurry.
Is there an Airport network involved? That will slow you down. Are they trying to use the built-in Ethernet (a Beige G3 Server should at least have a 10/100 card, Blue & White G3 comes with that). Is it running at its full speed? Sometimes they do not autospeed correctly and you are stuck running at 10 Mb/sec.
Remember the caches are all on the Server, and if you are logging out, the re-writing of all the preferences and stuff will be competing for that bandwidth to the Server.
Marginal cables or a Hub/Switch port that is going bad but not dead yet may be causing lots of retransmissions.

Would you provide more details about the problem?  A screenshot would be helpful.

Regarding printing PDF documents...It depends on the PDF document that you are trying to print.  In general, it will take longer to print more complex and larger PDF documents.
If you are willing to share your PDF document (that takes forever to print) with us at [email protected], we can test it with the same version (11.6.3) of Adobe Reader on different iOS versions (iOS 7.x vs. iOS 8.x).  Please include the link to this forum (https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1616231) in your email message for reference.
Actual printing is handled by iOS (not by Adobe Reader) via AirPrint over Wi-Fi connection.  We've heard from other users about iOS 8 Wi-Fi connectivity problems.

  • Saving edited photo takes forever

I updated to iPhoto 11 and it became very slow. I ned time to open program and saving edited picture take forever if application not quit... My Mac is bit older and has 1GB Ram and my library is about 50GB. Is it any sense to get rid of some picture to make iPhoto working faster?

That I was thinking about. Hard disk on this Mac is 320 Gigs and about 170 is free space. I can add up to 4 Gig of Ram. I didn't think about this before because I already runing two more Macs with Quad procesors. My old mashine is my first Mac ever (some happy tears in my eyes) and I just wanted make it healty like it was in old golden years. If it needs more Ram... let it be so.

  • Upgraded to OSX 10.9.1 and now Pages (iWork '08) takes much longer to launch.

Initial launch of Pages takes significantly longer to load after upgrading OSX.  I have used 'software update', but nothing out there to download.  Any ideas?  The other components of my iWork '08 bundle work as expected, it is only Pages that seems to have performance issues under OSX 10.9.1.

If I remember, I believe I thought I had to upgrade to Mavericks for a feature related to sharing or FaceTime or something.  I have an iMac, 2 MacBook Pro laptops (kids), an iPad (wife's) and Apple TV.  So on Mavericks, everyone in the house is happy now; I just don't like that it takes 'forever' to launch Pages.  Perhaps I will upgrade to iWork '09 to see if that takes care of the issue.

  • Saving Data back to DB Takes Forever

    Hi,
I've created a multithreaded application which reads in data from a Database A (on Sybase Server), performs number crunching on the data, and saves the data to Database B (on SQL Server). I'm using JTDS for the sql server and JConnect (Sybase Drivers) for the Sybase server. The problem is it takes forever to save the data. I think it's getting blocked somewhere but can't seem to figure out where. Here's is a stack dump of the thread which is saving the data:
    Thread [Thread-9] (Suspended)
SocketInputStream.socketRead0(FileDescriptor, byte[], int, int, int) line: not available [native method]

         Data_3G(Module).run() line: 61
         worker.run() line: 21
and here is a stack dump of a thread which is waiting on the save data (all other threads -- 10 threads in total -- are at this point:
    Thread [Thread-1] (Suspended)
         SaveData.saveToDB(PTConnection, CachedRowSet, String) line: 29
         CDMAVoice(Module).run() line: 61
         worker.run() line: 21
    Thanks for the help!

Off hand, I doubt anyone knows a solution to this unique problem, not without actually looking at your code and how your doing threading (but you never know). Why do you need a multithreaded application? Why not one thread, open the first datasource, read in a pile of data into memory (not just one record), close the first datasource , process it, , open the other database and write it out. close that dataSource. Loop until all data is transfered. If all works ok, see if you can change the code to keep both datasources open at the same time before closing them.
I assume your using connection pooling throughout.
Again, off hand, I dont see a multithread application really speeding up the application much, my guess is that the bulk of the waiting is read/writing to the database and not processing. This is just a guess.

  • Saving takes forever

    Guys,
saving files in Soundtrack takes forever. any idea why? sometimes it even seems unresponsive and crashes. help is much appreciated

If you are running Tiger 10.4.8 then that's the problem, you need to update your OS to 10.4.10 at least. 10.4.9 has a Pro app update and that will improve your save time.

  • Problem with Photoshop CS6 Freezing up when saving OSX Mavericks 10.9

I have a iMac we purchased last year (27inch, 32GB Ram, 512GB Flash Storage, OSX 10.9 Mavericks) with Adobe CS6 installed on it. About 2 months ago our Graphic Designer started having problems where when she went to save a Photoshop file the Mac would freeze up and just show the spinning pinwheel, after this happens we are unable to to even shut the system down and have to resort to holding the power button until it shuts off. Now this doesn't happen every time and we went almost a month with a problem but it has started back up and is happening multiple times a day. We have tried re installing CS6, creating a new profile for the user, deleting the library folder, saving to the desktop instead of a network location but nothing has seemed to do the trick. I'm a Windows Sysadmin so I'm out of my depths here and my poor Graphics Designer is getting really upset. Has anyone out there every had something like this happen??
Forever Grateful for any help that could be given -Giles Marsha

  • Help with saving OSX as a bootable back-up

    Hi,
I want to back up only my os as a bootable back-up. I have Super_Duper and a 250G HD. I just don't know which file(s) to tell SD to save for a back-up. Is is just the system folder? or are there other files that need to be saved as well. Apparently I can instruct the program to choose specific files.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    J Coletta:
It is difficult to make suggestions when you have not told us what you want to accomplish. Here are some suggestions that may or may not be appropriate to your needs:
    1. Format external HDD and create one partition approximately the size of your internal HDD for backup/cloning. (See Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery for suggestions). You can create whatever other partitions you need. For step-by-step directions for formatting and partitioning please post back.
    2. Use SuperDuper to clone the entire HDD to the backup partition (same size as HDD).
    3. If you have a registered copy of SuperDuper you can do SmartUpdates, which take a small fraction of the time it takes to make a full clone.
    4. Other partitions can be used for projects, archiving and stuff.
Your backup partition will be bootable, so you can use it as an emergency drive, or to run tests, diagnostics and repairs on the intenal HDD.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Mail program takes forever writing changes and saving index

Over the past couple of weeks, my G3 PowerBook (recently loaded with OSX), when I go to the Mail program, has taken to spending up to a minute at a time Writing Changes to Disk and then Saving Index. Tonight it did it every time I sent a message or accessed a message. It's now impossibly slow, and I can't find any way to stop it doing this every few minutes or with every message. How do I make it stop, or do this less frequently - say, once a day? I only have 400 messages in my Inbox, so I don't think it's overloaded.

    Hi again
Select the mailbox you're are having problems with - you can find the Rebuild option under "Mailbox" from the menu at the top of the screen.
You can download a fully functional trial of Cocktail from here

I should point out I don't work for Maintain or receive payment for recommending Cocktail to other users, it's just my favourite utility =0)

  • Opening saved iChats in Leopard takes FOREVER

Ever since I upgraded to 10.5 my saved iChat logs seem to take a very long time to open, depending on their size. The smaller ones open fairly quickly but a larger one, 75k+, gets hung up and can take from 30 seconds to much longer. If it is more than 15 seconds or so, the spinning wheel starts and iChat will pretty much be frozen up until the file is open. I just opened a 284k chat log and it took over 20 minutes, freezing up iChat with the spinning wheel the whole time.
Does anyone else have this problem, and possibly a solution? Obviously taking 20 minutes to open a 284k file isn't normal.

MacBook Pro 2gig with 2Gb RAM
120kb old iChat 3 file - essentially Instant.
    180kb iChat 3 file - same
    recent iChat 4 20kb file - same
This was done by navigating to the iChat folder and double Clicking.
The New filing system by date seems not to effect things.
Using Open recent in iChat itself was slightly longer for some reason but you can not see the size.

  • When I try to download OSX mavericks in the App Store, it takes forever then the downloading icon just disappears after a loooong time just to get half way

When I try to download osx mavericks, it takes and xtremely long time...like over 2 hours just to get to the half way mark...then the downloading icon on my dock for it just disappears after it has been half way finished.

I recently purchased a second hand new macbook air, although it was second hand to me the previous owner had never actually turned it on.

  • Rentals take forever to download EACH time? Aren't they saved in the AppleTV?

I downloaded a rental movie then started to see it, but had to leave so stopped it. When I came back it asked if I wanted to start from the beginning or where I left off, but as I press play it starts to load again. WHAT???? ANOTHER two hours? Don't they stay saved?

No, there is no storage in ATV2. The 8GB flash is simply for caching the stream, if you turn off the device or watch other content it will be flushed and require a download. The slow loading is because you have a slow connection, 6mbps is required for instant HD rentals. You can turn off HD in the settings if you want to view faster.
If you want to store the rental you can download to your computer and stream it to ATV.

  • Preview 'saving changes' takes forever and then crashes!!!!! What should I do?

I Have searched everywhere for answers to no avail. If there's no help to make this 'saving changes 'thing to stop when I'm working with pdf can someone suggest another pdf reader as good or better than preview for me? I need one that uses little memory. Adobe reader seems to be very choppy and sluggish for me. I've got 8gb RAM And I use Mac OSXlatest update 10.9 on a brand new MBP retina. Thanks. Other things I've done so far... I have unchecked the iCloud document and files so I don't save anything to iCloud. Somebody help with this. Thanks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Saving files takes forever

Why does it take so long for illustrator to save a file when InDesign seems so much quicker?

Illustrator can save files very quickly couple things to keep in mind when building fast files for Illustrator
Do a save as and trun off pdf compatible (you do not need this unless you are importing into InDesign). Your saves will now be much quicker as your files will be much smaller.
When placing bitmapped images, check the box to link, embeddeding will make your files larger and slower
Run the action delete unused panel items. This will clean up your unused swatches, symbols, brushes, graphic style. If you have 100s of any of these repeated, see bullet below.
Check the file size of you document, you may have a technical problem if abnormally large. You can search for a post deleted global colors
In comparison I find Illustraror files to be smaller and faster then InDesign when the same content is used. InDesign has a lot of header content. I was working on changing the workflwo for one of the major trade show exhibition companies. Wanted to switch them for InDesign for their work orders, since InDesign has a nice table feature they could have used for charting their signage placement on structures. Unfortunatley found out that InDesign file sizes got too large for 1000s of work ordfers per trade show that would have exhausted the space on their servers. I don't know InDesign as well, and do recognize that it is a better fit for books, catalogs, but would love to hear what others have experienced and if I may have missed something. I actually like working in InDesign or any other program more, because it is something different than my usual, though I do struggle sometimes with cleansing the InDesign pallete with stubborn unused coloros that do not want to delete and getting the over 27 spot colors error.

  • Running OSX 10.6.8 iTunes 10, rental movie will take 6 hours to download for what reason?

When renting from iTunes, I have to rent the movie early in the morning so it will be downloaded by the afternoon to watch in the evening. Why does it take so long to view a rented movie? I'm on Cox with extra bandwidth-high speed connection.

Thank you so much Paul_31 for your suggestions, HUGELY appreciate the effort
I have reset the printing system, a few times for good measure but nadda.
I have also looked at getting the software from the Apple site after seeing that with Snow Leopard you should let the operating system lead the install not the manufacteurers software as it is most likely out of date.  I too found it wasn't there so I uninstalled the software got up the CLX_3300 series stuff then went from there with the USB cable.  It apparently hasn't worked either
Unfortunately now after using the print utility to scan for a while that has now gone again on the last restart of the Mac.  I am so completely clueless
The box says the printer is compatible, the place of purchase said it was compatible, the Samsung site says it is compatible.
I think it's the set up of my Mac? Our maybe a glitch in the network settings?
    Thanks again
