  • Final images in a saved .pdf from Illustrator don't look correct

    Illustrator Newb:
I'm making a design for a new product that comes in 3 different flavors. So I have 1 design, in 3 different colors.
I created all of my different parts for the design in Photoshop CS4 as .pdfs and placed them all in an Illustrator file (except for the text and a few shadows, strokes and such). I'm having problems with 1 of my placed images. It's placed 4 different times, and all 4 are either not showing up or are cropped in odd irregular ways. I have no paths or other hidden parts in the file that would cover them and it only shows up wrong when the Illustrator file is saved as a .pdf.
I went back to the original .psd thinking there was a problem w/ it, and resaved it under a new name and it still saves in AI all broken up.
Because I have 3 different flavors, I've done this in the other files, from that same orignal .psd and they turned out fine. And because this design is confidential I can't post pictures of the error to help describe my problem... The problem started yesterday and we're already behind production schedule.
But any help would be nice. Please and thank you!

    Also:
The first design I made in AI I saved the .ai file under a different name and changed the minor things I needed to make it the other flavor. I can't go back to that original file because I keep getting a Runtime Error when I open it. Not every file has this error, just the original.. THE ONE I REALLY NEED.

  • Problem Saving PDF with Opacity Masks in Illustrator CS3

I'm having trouble exporting an Illlustrator CS3 file to PDF. I have two layers in the the .ai file that have opacity masks applied. When I save the file as a PDF, the two layers with opacity masks seem to disappear (or they are flattened down to white/100% transparency.) They do not show on screen nor when printing. I've tried opening the saved PDF in Illustrator to investigate, and the layers are still there, but with no opacity mask. Where am I going wrong? I've tried a new file with a simple shape and a simple opacity mask, and it exports fine to PDF. So something is wrong with my file set up, but I can't pinpoint what! I have also tried exporting to various versions of PDF, and nothing works. Help!
    Screen cap from Illustrator:
    Screen cap of PDF:
Correct (Illustrator) with subtle starburst effect:
    Wrong (Acrobat PDf), no starburst!
    Thanks for looking!

Not sure what's going on in your file, but it's definately having a problem with the Steaks layer. Trying to release the clipping mask and ungrouping all the layers is having a problem so it might have something to do with the way the streaks layer was built.
Using your file I replaced the streaks layer and put a starburst that's clipped to the icon shape. I've attached two files. One is for Illustrator CC so you can retain the gradient fill on the stroke which is only available in newer versions of Illustrator. The other has the starburst I created expanded so that you can open the file and retain the startburst look.

  • Saved PDF files in Illustrator not showing when opened in Reader

I'm having a problem with files saved as PDFs in Illustrator, which, when opened in Reader
reveal only a blank page. Any solutions?

Thanks for your response.  It doesn't seem to matter which layer is higher in the stack.  I also checked that each layer was set to "print".  I think the problem is on the Mathematica side --- the problem I have arises with pdf graphics generated in Mathematica 8, but not in 9.  Hmm.

  • Saving PDF files from illustrator

    Hi
Can anybody help we are having an issue with illustrator cs3 and cs4 when saving pdf files
as you can see this is the file in illustrator and the images butt togeather with a black line down the middle when we then save the pdf and we have tried different options it moves the image, the images are placed eps images. This is not file specific as we have tried other files/images.
    Can anybody help

Yes I think I understand the problem and I believe it is expected behavior and I will explain.
You must convert the images to cmyk in photoshop first before placing them in Illustrator or convert them after but since they are linked the conversion has to take place in photoshop by using the link panel to edit the original.
Now it should work as expected but I did this without the using a black key line on the rectangle I used for my clipping so once you have the rectangles position if you still find you have this problem then go bak and redo the clipping mask without the black stroke.
This is my result in Acrobat with the images converted to cmyk so I am positive you stated with RGB and did not convert before placing.
As you can at 6400% magnification it is fine. This is the top edge of the two butted images when saved as pdf after converting the files to cmyk in Photoshop. PDX 1a supports CMYK.
This is what it looks like when using the inked files when they are rgb

  • How to create multi page PDF in illustrator CC?

Hello, can anyone help with this, used to be able to do it easily in CS but doesnt seem to be available when saving a PDF file in CC?..... really frustrating!

    Hi Monika,
When I open my old tiled illustrator file in CC, it asks if I want to open a legacy art board. I do this.
This then displays on screen correctly as the individually paged tiles.
This is all fine. However when I then want to save as PDF there is no option to save this PDF as a multipage document.
The saved PDF file just comes out as one long single drawing board page and isn’t split into individual pages when read back in by Acrobat

  • Unable to save a 'smallest size file' pdf from illustrator 5.5

We recently insalled Adobe Standard 5.5
I often save PDF files from Illustrator using the built in PDF options available from the PDF drop down menu bar when saving files. Usually I will save a visual as a 'smallest file size' or make use of the 'high quality print' option for other files etc.
Why cant I do this on CS5.5?
In addition, the colour is not acurate at all!
    Please help

Hi Scott - I found the following thread on the net. So I had a look on my time machine back-ups and copied the files from there, which I then pasted into my Settings folder as you suggested.
    Ta da!! All working again!
Any idea how I could restore these settings from a backup?
    Thanks!
The PDF presets reside in Root/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/
After I had installed 10.6.5, 6 preset files were removed from the Settings folder. The folder tree itself remained, it was just that some of the contents of "Settings" were deleted. I have fixed the problem by copying the deleted settings files from a backup.
These are the files which were deleted:
    Smallest File Size.joboptions
    Press Quality.joboptions
    PDFX4 2008.joboptions
    PDFX3 2002.joboptions
    PDFX1 2001.joboptions
    High Quality Print.joboptions
    These files were not deleted:
    Standard.joboptions
    PDFA1b 2005 RGB.joboptions
    PDFA1b 2005 CMYK.joboptions
    Oversized Pages.joboptions
Somebody at Adobe community support for Indesign directed me to restore these files from a backup, which solved the problem.

  • Problems with pdf in illustrator, my latest changes are gone!

I have an illustrator file with layers and I saved it as a pdf and now when I open it in illustrator, all my latest changes are gone! BUT its fine when I open the same file in acrobat!
    Help, what to do?

    Maria,
You may have only saved the latest changes as PDF.
But if you have saved with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities, you may get it all back by opening the PDF.
Otherwise, you will have to make whichever use is possible of the PDF.
A safe(r) way is to Save a Copy as PDF, and to save as AI frequently.

  • Error opening Adobe PDF in Illustrator

I'm getting the following message when I try to open a specific Adobe PDF file in Illustrator: "Could not open the file"
    The details:
    - I created the file yesterday in Illustrator and saved is as an Adobe PDF
    - I opened the PDF in Illustrator this morning and have been working on it all day.  The file started getting slow (i.e., objects moving slowly), so I saved the file and closed out.  When I tried opening the file again in Illustrator, I got the message above.
    - Other PDF files will open in Illustrator.  The file itself will open in Adobe PDF and in Photoshop - just not in Illustrator.  I also tried opening the file in Illustrator on a different computer, and that didn't work, either.
Is there any way to save this file (i.e., preserve all of the layers) and open it in Illustrator again?
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi Monika,
Thanks for getting back to me.  What do you mean by "save to networked or
removable media"?  I'm working off a networked computer, but I'm saving to
the desktop, so I don't think that should be an issue, right?
Any ideas about what could have damaged the file?  I can't think of anything
strange or different that I did.  Is there any way at all to salvage the
file and be able to open it in Illustrator?
Thanks so much for your help,
    Amanda

  • I can't select lines in a pdf ? illustrator has already selected a series of blue rectangles that prevent me from select?

Hi there, I'm new to illustrator I have been using it to change line weights in pdf's. however the last time i imported a pdf it opens with a series of blue selection boxes which prevent me from selecting individual lines. any ideas? any advice would be much appreciated. Rowan

^^Larry could be on to something there...
    Or...
It's likely you're trying to deconstruct a PDF that wasn't saved by/for Illustrator, so its contents are nested within clipping masks.
With one or more of those blue boxes selected, choose Object > Clipping Mask > Release

  • Opening Photoshop PDF in Illustrator problem

    Hi,
I've got a problem with opening pdf file from photoshop in illustrator. I've got a psd file with a rasterized background (photo) and about 100 shape layers over it. I'm trying to save it as a photoshop pdf to keep the vector elements unflattened for use in illustrator. The saved pdf is about three times larger than the original psd file. Then I'm trying to open the pdf in illustrator but I get a message that illustrator can't preview it. It only shows the outline of the shapes. Do you know how can I save this pdf to be able to work on it in illustrator? or maybe some trick to copy all of the shapes at once from photoshop to illustrator with correct placement? Thank you in advance:)
    Mark

Thanks a lot for your help guys. The option with opening psd file in illustrator works best:)
I've tried opening pdf before but it seems to work fine when there are just a few simple shapes.
@Mylenium: I didn't have different blending modes, only normal. One rasterized layer as background and about 100 shapes layers above. Most of them being text layers converted to shapes. Nothing too fancy:)
I've also thought that different opacities might be the problem but I've saved one pdf with different opacities and the other one with every layer at 100% opacity and both pdf files had exactly the same size and both couldn't be opened.
Thanks again and have a nice day,
    Mark

  • Saved files in illustrator turn into all black when viewing

    Hi All,
I've searched through the forums + google but haven't been able to get an answer on why this is happening.  Sometimes when I save files as a pdf in Illustrator, or receive files from other people the image loses it's colour.
All colour is just black.  I'm attaching a screen shot so you can see what I mean, the colours here are supposed to be a shades of a PMS colour, but instead they're all black.
    Hopefully someone can help!
    Thanks in advance.
    Jo

You should never view any PDF in any other program than Acrobat or Reader. All other viewers support only a subset of PDF standards, so they are not reliable viewer program.
The Word thing has nothing to do with Illustrator or PDF. You need to know,
in which program the Word embedded graphic was created.
how the graphic was saved as. Not every file type, which can be imported on Word in Windows is supported completely on the Mac, like EMF, WMF, but also other file types. (The other way round is also true.)
How the graphic was imported. Some people copy an image or a graphic from a source and paste it via clipboard. Which is not a good way, because it needs several system ressources from the local computer to show up in the host application, in that case in Word. If such a document is opened on a different computer, often even on the same Operating System, those images show up black. The only correct and robust way to import images in Word is via the Insert-Command or button with a compatible file selected.
Another problem might be, that an image or graphic was inserted in a version which creates docx files, like 2007 or 2010.Those versions support more graphic file types than older versions do. But because some people think, it is better to save files as DOC than as DOCX (smae with PowerPoint or Excel) for compability those images get lost and are only represented as black boxes. In my experience it happens often with PNG-24 files. It is never a good idea to save DOCX back to DOC. I inerit only problems with that workflow. (Also when I import files into InDesign I get always messed up with footnotes with this method, several get lost, several change their reference with each other, I have got DOCs where not even 1 of 400 footnotes was on its original place after import to InDesign. But this is another topic, but it is also an argument to avoid this workflow!)

  • White Lines on Live Traced Artwork in PDF from Illustrator CS3

Hi,<br /><br />I've recently been using the Live Trace feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3 on my artwork so that my artwork becomes a vector image instead of a raster (I'm told it's better for Web because it works better with varying resolutions - doesn't become pixelated).  For my live trace, I use a custom preset:<br /><br />ADJUSTMENTS-<br />Mode: Color<br />Threshold: 128 (grayed out)<br />Palette: Automatic<br />Max Colors: 256<br />Output to Swatches: OFF<br />Blur: 0 px<br />Resample: 600 px<br />Fills: ON <grayed out><br />Strokes: OFF (grayed out)<br /><br />TRACE SETTINGS-<br />Max Stroke Weight: 10 px (grayed out)<br />Min Stroke Length: 20 px (grayed out)<br />Path Fitting: 1 px<br />Minimum Area: 1 px<br />Corner Angle: 1<br />Ignore White: OFF<br /><br />VIEW-<br />Raster: No Image<br />Vector Tracing Result<br /><br />The preview info, located under the dialogue bubble with the i states:<br />Paths: 4894<br />Anchors: (no number)<br />Colors: 148<br />Areas: 4822<br />Image PPI: 200<br /><br />I don't know if that helps anyone, but that's just the preset I've used to get a sharper, almost fully preserved vector version of my raster image.<br /><br />When I want to convert it to a PDF file using the File > Save As... > Save as type: PDF with the following preset:<br /><br />Adobe PDF Preset: Illustrator Default<br />Standard: None<br />Compatibility: Acrobat 8 (PDF 1.7)<br /><br />Then, my image as viewed in the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional has several white lines, outlining areas of color.  You can see it here: <br /><br />http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y218/Mont-ImmortalSquirrel/Ai-PDF_whitelines.jpg<br /><br />The image connected to this link was captured with PrntScrn and copied into Photoshop, cropped, and saved as a jpeg.  The issue is perfectly preserved, as you can see the white lines outlining areas of color.  This problem is persistent despite the zoom level in Acrobat 8.  <br /><br />Just another little bit of information, the problem is most noticeable in the red area and not the cream/white and yellow areas.  When I was working on the original raster image in Photoshop CS3, the cream/white area was done with the Ellipse Tool, using Bevel and Emboss in the Blending Options.  The same goes for the yellow area, which was done with the Line Tool.  The red area was done manually, with the Brush Tool, Smudge, Blur, Burn, etc.<br /><br />I'm telling you guys just about everything I've done leading up to this issue.  But, if there's something you need to know more, I'll try to figure out what I could've possibly done wrong to get this result.

I too get this result when using LiveTrace. My simple solution to this problem was to just place a solid color shape behind that section of the trace where it occurs that is the same color as the trace. Simple...but it worked.

  • Saving PDF's in CS5 - Mac Intel

I'm on an Intel Mac, OS 10.6.8, with CS5.  I've been trying to save pdf files, and they seem to save just fine, but cannot be opened in other applications, such as the most current Adobe Reader or Preview. In both cases I get an error document that says repeatedly on it: "This is an Adobe® Illustrator® File that was
saved without PDF Content. To Place or open this  le in other applications, it should be re-saved from Adobe Illustrator with the "Create PDF Compatible File" option turned on. This option is in the Illustrator Native Format Options dialog box, which appears when saving an Adobe Illustrator  le using the Save As command."
I've looked everywhere and am not finding this option! My EPS files seem to be having problems going through also, as well as AI files that are supposed to be opened  on other machines.  I never had this issue with my old Illustrator (version 9!).  Is there something I can do to resolve it?

yeah, I've saved it numerous times at this point, using all kinds of options.  But it shouldn't be this hard! If you try saving the AI file on your computer as a pdf file, does it do the same thing? if so, then that tells me this is some sort of flaw in the program, as the pdf choice is, in part, to be able to show a file just as it appears on your own computer but on various other platforms. If it saves as a pdf just fine and can be accessed in other programs, then it's something to do with my computer or settings.

  • Saving PDF for Web?

    Hello!
I recently designed a 6-page annual report, meant to be disseminated as a PDF via web and e-mail.  I am having trouble getting the PDF small enough and streamlined enough for this purpose.  The file is under 4MB, but even on my system it is difficult to scroll through it, and graphics take a moment to appear or flash repeatedly on the screen.
The design is simple but includes many gradients and transparencies, which I assume is the root of the problem.  I have flattened transparency and converted text to outlines.  There are no images other than one vector logo.  When saving as a PDF, I choose "smallest file size," with all options unticked except "save for fast web review."  Lowering downsampling under "compression" made no difference.  Even external sites like smallpdf.com would not make the file smaller.  I'm not even sure changing the file size will ultimately solve the issue of the graphic elements flashing and taking time to properly appear.
Is there anything else I can do to make this file more accessible to a broad audience?
    Thanks!

Outlining is considered very bad practice for many reasons (and cannot be undone).
True, but not in all cases...
But that is for a different conversation.
    You could try using indesign.
I have found this will create a much more compact PDF then illustrator.
and is much better at dealing with text
