Saving PDF in Preview results in unsearchable File

Hi
I found an archieved discussion (but without a single answer to the question), so I'm reproducing it here again because I have the exact same problem and am hoping for suggestions for a solution:
"If I take any PDF that is searchable (say from the internet or exported in ms-word) open it in Preview.app, and do a "Save as..." the resulting PDF is not searchable (and btw bigger in file size). I can properly cut and paste text from the original, but from the saved PDF the text is corrupted. Is this a known issue?"
Can anyone help with this one plz.? it's really annoying. thnx.

Open the first document in Preview.  Select View -> Thumbnails.  Drop the second document onto the thumbnail image of the first one, not in the blank space in the thumbnail panel.

  • Problem saving pdf from preview

Since upgrading to 10.4.3 I have noticed that preview behaves strangely when re-saving pdf files. If I preview a pdf document and the use the "save" function to make a copy, the copied file is about twice the size of the original, and the Table of Contents data seems to be lost. I've noticed this for files produced from the TeX package, such as are on the physics electronic archives (http://arxiv/org). Any explanation would be appreciated! I realise that I could just save a copy directly, but it is sometimes handy to preview first, and I am a little disturbed to discover that preview appears to be changing pdf files unnecessarily when saving them.
    12" powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I can't help you, but I'm having the same problem with version 9.4.1
I have been trying to "save as" some .pdf documents (monthly statements) from a financial institution, but it does not work when I right click on the file, or when I right click on the document.  Like you, I click on the "disc" icon, and nothing happens.  I was able to save these in August and prior, but not now.  It makes no sense.
When I open these documents, they appear in a web window, not in the Reader software, so there is no tool bar showing "file", "edit", "view", etc, like what appearsw in Acrobat.  I'm stumped.  I posted this several days before you, but no replies yet.  I'm not real eager to pay $39 for the adobe help desk just yet.

  • Can't search for words anymore after saving PDFs in Preview

    Hi everyone,
I would love to use Preview for my day-to-day use of previewing PDFs + highlighting + setting annotations. However, once I have saved the pdf with Preview I can not search for words anymore. If I search for one letter only, I would get cryptic hits like "7;%! 2%8%P%8!".
I am not sure, but I guess when preview saves the pdf using a Quartz PDF context, something happens with the index, or the underlying the font structuring.
Does anyone have had experience with these kinds of troubles?
    Thanks in advance,
    Heinrich

Hi, thanks for answering quickly, and the heads up on that other thread.
It undoubtedly has to do with the annotations or mark ups (the last, in my case).
In the linked-to thread they end by suggesting that it's because it's has "commenting not allowed" when you see it
using Adobe Reader, File > Properties > Security says Commenting: Not Allowed.
However, some documents with "commenting not allowed set in Adobe Reader I can highlight or annotate fine, without it messing up after saving.
Besides, any document I save as pdf even from Word, will say commenting not allowed in Adobe Reader. So if even my own documents are not highlight- or annotate-able without garbling the text, what documents would these functions be for, then?
I think what somebody mentioned in the other thread about character encodings hold some truth, I see it in documents in Danish with æ ø and å (however, not all!), but not in English-only docs (yet. Have any of you?).
    Thanks in advance,
    - Alexander

  • Copy and paste from PDF in Preview results in gibberish

When I copy and then paste text from a PDF in Preview into Pages, the resulting text is gibberish symbols. The odd thing is it only happens with some text in the PDF and other PDFs do the same thing.
I have a screen recording to demonstrate my problem. http://blip.tv/file/2823667 View it in full screen to see the text.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/86630/internet%20use%20decreases%20social%20interaction. pdf
It looks to me like that part of the text has been transcoded into the Unicode Private Use Area for some reason. I've seen in this various other pdf's, and I think it is a bug in the app which produced the pdf. PUA code points are undefined, so the OS displays the Last Resort Font symbol for that range.

  • Saving PDFs from Preview

When creating a PDF in Preview, that your non-Mac business associates will open in Adobe Reader, the resulting document is noted as an 8 1/2 x 11 page size (in Adobe's Document Properties), even when the original document is something else, creating print problems for those trying to print what was originally a large drawing.
Saving the PDF was done in the Print dialog box, not the "Save As" dialog box (where other problems are created...namely, no image shows when opened in Adobe Reader).
Any way to save a PDF in Preview and retain the original drawing size? There are several settings in Preview's Preferences affecting DPI and scale, and I have tried them all, in different combinations. None seem to affect the resulting page size, which somehow is a property known to Adobe Reader, but seems invisible to Preview.

Are you talking about saving a C or D size dwg?
In this case I had to create a custom size. However, I solved the problem by simply setting the correct paper size in the Preview Print dialog box, before saving as a PDF.
Saving out of the "Save As" dialog box is still a problem. I note on the Adobe web site that a fully Leopard compliant Reader is not available until "late January". Maybe that will solve it.
    Anyway, thanks for chiming in.

  • Problem with saving PDF in Preview

When I open PDF file in Preview in OS 10.5. (make changes) and save it as PDF again, this pdf file does not display corectly on PC. Fonts are missing. When I save in Acrobat, everything is correct. I looked on the information about saved pdf, and Prewiev inserts some fonts to PDF. Acrobat reader on PC tells me, that some fonts can be removed and pdf may be not dispayed correctly. This problem is only in Leopard, because in Tiger was everything fine. Does anybody know any solution? Thank you.

I see this same behavior, and it is a serious pain for us LaTeX writers.
I have found a rather annoying work-around: if you manually close the file before re-opening it (Cmd-W), it will honor this "Start on the last viewed page" option and behave like it used to.
Of course, then it starts off at the start zoom level... but, at least, with a large project, you're not having to opt-cmd-g ("go to page") and remember page numbers.

  • Font embedding problem when re-saving pdfs in Preview

I love the new features in Preview. Especially, being able to reshuffle pages and to be able to add and delete pages to documents, and the improved annotation features.
This is what I did and encountered this problem. I have a pdf that I annotated and added pages to.
I re-saved the document under a different name. On Leopard, and also on a Tiger computer, the document looks fine.
I sent it to a client on a PC and the PC complains with this re-saved document that it "Cannot extract the embedded font 'HEMGNF+Sabon Italic'. Some characters may display incorrectly." This cryptic 6-letter name of the font can change by the way, in these PC-messages.
This only happens when I re-save the document in Preview.
    Anybody else who's had this?

Update: Reader 8 on a PC displays everything fine, so it's a matter of updating

  • Chinese characters copying incorrectly when saving pdfs with Preview

So this is a very strange problem. When I save a .pdf that I have annotated in Preview, it saves fine and everything continues to display correctly. However, if I then try to copy Chinese characters from the pdf, it pastes gibberish. F'rex:
    灿烂辉煌 becomes "3456"
    and
    遇到的问题 becomes " !"
Does anyone know what is going on and how to deal with it?

The strange part is that initially the Chinese characters copy fine. It's only after I save the .pdf that copying goes all wonky.
I think there is a bug related to annotation.
Is there any way to control what encoding Preview uses when saving?
No. PDF is the worst possible format to use for any kind of editing.
Have you tried Adobe Reader? Or Skim?

Preview is not always the best option.

  • Saving PDF's across a network - problem files.

We have a local network of about 15 users.  Seemingly out of the blue, a user will run into an issue saving or moving a PDF across the network.  It takes much longer than normal for the save to complete (60 second or more) and the user's PC becomes unresponsive, with all network connections going down.  The pdf is created, but is a smaller than normal size.  The pdf cannot be moved, renamed or deleted by any user without locking up that user and eventually jamming the entire network.  So the pdf is apparently corrupt in some way, although it looks normal and become a virtual landmine - any user that clicks on it locks up.  This does not happen all of the time.  We can go for days without any issues and users performing the same basic actions of moving and saving files to difference network locations....then bam! a bad pdf save happens.
Any ideas?  Is there someone at Adobe who can take a look at one of these "bad" pdf's do some forensics?
    Thank you.

    Hi Mary ,
Is it happening with any specific user and specific PDF or is the process random?
Could be possible the PDF is corrupt. I wonder you are able to view the PDF ,if so kindly run and OCR and try optimizing the PDF and see if that helps.
You can try repairing the Acrobat.
Launch Acrobat>Navigate to Help>Repair Acrobat Installation
You can try updating the Acrobat in case you are using any of the older versions.
Launch Acrobat>Navigate to Help>Check for Updates.

  • Difference b/w scanning TEXT vs. IMAGES (or printing to pdf in PREVIEW)?

I have my scanner set to 300 dpi Color TIFF.
Is this giving me something different when I scan a text document or when I scan a series of images? Do these then get /converted/ in some way that I am not understanding when I print to pdf in PREVIEW? I run File > Print > Pulldown to pdf and SaveAs pdf. Does this do something to the images that it doesn't do to the text or vice-versa?
I have pdf's that are from 100 MB to 900 MB and I am trying to downsize them with this set of "quartz filters" (whatever that is).
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1292868?start=0&tstart=0
But doing this on a text pdf seems to work great and doing it on a pdf of scans of images (scanned with the same settings) doesn't reduce the file size?! I have a 33 page pdf of images and it is 66 GB in size and my email pipe is choking on it.
    TIA

    Hi Jason.
Interesting about the jpg's not degrading much upon compression. For some reason I have moved to TIFF due to recommendations on quality (?) and to png due to recommendations on bandwidth (?).
    Also thanks for 150 px.
For me it is a little hard to switch back and forth between image settings and b + w settings but I will start keeping an eye on line art settings for b + w. Thanks again.
Is it possible anyone knows of a way to downsample a color pdf of images that are TIFF and 300 dpi or to downsample a black and white pdf that is in the same settings but is in Color Currently?
I'm running some quartz filter reduction routines on my largest pdf's (500 MB?!) and in some cases dropping it down to the 150 Average Compression is totally trashing these files. I can't understand what is going on or whether it is only doing it to the images and /why/ it is doing this to the images.
I mean, I'm getting ready to move these off my mac hard drive and onto a windows hard drive just to downsize them so I can move along...
    Thanks.

  • File Size of PDFs in Preview

I scan a lot of documents for record keeping purposes. I set the scanner to 300 dpi, black and white. This keeps the file size down and the document is readable and printable (close to the original), and the scanning is quick. I scanned three sets of documents (about 15 pages each) this way and saved them as PDFs. The file sizes were 3.1 MB, 3.2 MB, and 1.8 MB. I used Preview to combine the three documents into one PDF. The resulting file was 19.3 MB. Why so large? 3.1 + 3.2 + 1.8 = 8.1 What is going on here? How do I keep the file size down when using Preview? I don't want to buy PDF Studio (or some tool like it) if I can avoid it (they all seem so mediocre).

    Try Combine PDFs
    <http://www.monkeybreadsoftware.info/Freeware/CombinePDFs.shtml>
I scan at 600 bpi into TIFF, then use Graphics Converter to save with the CCITT 4 compression. I get about 12:1 compression, with no loss of quality. The result is still TIFF, so you don't have to uncompress to use them.

  • Custom "Save as PDF" directly to a destination folder overwrites previously saved PDF files

Custom "Save as PDF" directly to a destination folder overwrites previously saved PDF files
As many of you will know, within Mac OSX it is possible to "print" any document off as a PDF.  You simply prepare your document then invoke the "Print" command and in the resulting print dialog box, click the "PDF" button in the bottom left corner which spills out a menu with various options including "Save as PDF..." as shown in the image below:
Selecting the last option "Edit Menu" permits users to add specific folders to which a PDF of the document will be saved.  As you will note from the image above, I have created a number of destinations such as "Bank Transfers" (for anything on screen in Safari I wish to preserve when using my on-line banking facility); "Bind" (which I use with an Automator workflow to consolidate many PDFs into one long document); "Officeworks" (for stuff I need to copy to a USB stick and have printed on on large plotters); "iPad" (for anything I need to put on my iPad through "iAnnotate" or "Documents") etc
The problem I have discovered is that with the introduction of Mountain Lion, PDFs that get saved directly to a destination folder get overwritten by later versions of PDFs that are produced from the same document.  This is fine when working on a single document that you may want to have the latest print of a document but not so when you produce many different PDFs from the same browser window in Safari as you surf through a number of websites etc.
Prior to Mountain Lion, pervious versions were never over-written but rather preserved them with new versions having version number suffixes added e.g., untitled.pdf, followed by untitled1.pdf, untitled2.pdf, untitled3.pdf etc.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? (other than a workaround like switching to Finder to rename or move files around)

The "Save to Web Receipts" bug existed for a long time - here's a MacOSXHints article offering a workaround in 2007.  Here's another reference to it in 2009.  Your contention that:
Prior to Mountain Lion, pervious [sic] versions were never over-written.
    is, I'm afraid, wrong.
Apple fixed (worked around) that bug by using a .pdfworkflow, as I indicated.  As I also indicated, this file can't be opened with Automator (or I just don't know how, which is no great surprise ).  But it's the answer to your problems.
You can either wait for Apple to fix what is, admittedly, a huge bug in their PDF Services feature, or you can find a way of implementing the same fix they did for your own folders.
I should be doing the same, as I use PDF Services regularly, but I'm too lazy and have had too little success with Automator in general to give it a shot.  You may have more success than I did.
    Good luck

  • Saved pdf forms empty in Reader, filled in Preview

Today I was informed that pdf forms I've filled and saved/emailed with Preview are empty when viewed with Reader 9 (Win or Mac). If the recipient sends the form back to me, Preview shows the form just as I've filled it. Reader 9 on my MBP also shows the form empty, emailed or not.
Seems to me, that Snow Leopards Preview has some bugs. I hope these are redemied in 10.6.2.

    HI,
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.Preview.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that did't help, try deleting this file as well.

  • Saving PDF files from illustrator

    Hi
Can anybody help we are having an issue with illustrator cs3 and cs4 when saving pdf files
as you can see this is the file in illustrator and the images butt togeather with a black line down the middle when we then save the pdf and we have tried different options it moves the image, the images are placed eps images. This is not file specific as we have tried other files/images.
    Can anybody help

Yes I think I understand the problem and I believe it is expected behavior and I will explain.
You must convert the images to cmyk in photoshop first before placing them in Illustrator or convert them after but since they are linked the conversion has to take place in photoshop by using the link panel to edit the original.
Now it should work as expected but I did this without the using a black key line on the rectangle I used for my clipping so once you have the rectangles position if you still find you have this problem then go bak and redo the clipping mask without the black stroke.
This is my result in Acrobat with the images converted to cmyk so I am positive you stated with RGB and did not convert before placing.
As you can at 6400% magnification it is fine. This is the top edge of the two butted images when saved as pdf after converting the files to cmyk in Photoshop. PDX 1a supports CMYK.
This is what it looks like when using the inked files when they are rgb
