Saving photos in compressed files

My DLSR camera creates photos with file sizes in the 4.0 to 9.0 MB range. At these sizes, even a single photo is sometimes too large to send via email. Now I am trying to post some of them on a website, and they are too large to be included on a website. Is there a way I can save these photos in a format that takes less computer space, so I can post them on a website?

to e-mail select a smaller size when you e-mail
for web sites select the photo(s) and export using the size options - upload the exported photos

• When I am saving photos from a file, I cannot get the save path to go back to the default folder I want them in. Each save has to be done by going through the path to find the folder I'm saving to.

I am saving photo files from my camera, a drop box etc. I used to be able to click "save as" and the folder I saved in before came up for saving the new image. Now, I have to start way back to the "Barb" folder - to "documents" "images, etc" back up to the folder I save these particular pictures in.
How do I get the "save" to go to the last folder I used - in this particular session?
Everytime you route me back to "educated guesses" I cannot find this particular problem

Firefox 11+ versions have support via browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref to disable to disable the feature to remember the download directory based upon the URL.
The browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref doesn't exist by default (it is hidden).
Create a new Boolean pref with the name browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite and set the value to false.
You may have the clear the "Site Preferences" via Clear Recent History to remove already stored data.

Yes, you do this when you export the images from the Library.
File -> Export
in the Size section, you don't need images larger than the frame size, so you can specify that and in the Jpeg Quality you can select the amount of compression used.

• A few of the photos will not transfer as they are saved as jpeg.rem files

Hi,
I'm new to this board and trying to transfer pictures and videos from my Blackberry Bold (work one with T-mobile) to
my PC. I tried to do it by using media card reader and was sucessfully able to most of the files
but for some reason a few of the photos will not transfer as they are saved as jpeg.rem files
on my media card. Any ideas why would some of the pictures would be save in a different format
and any suggestions how to transfer them?
I have the same issue with the videos..out of 20+ that I have on the device memory i was only
able to copy about 5 that are in .gp format...rest of them will not open as it appears to be encrypted.
I also have a blackberry curve (with AT&T) as my personal phone...would it read my media card from the
Blackberry Bold?
Thanks!

Hi guruli
The .rem files indicate these files are encrypted. This article should help.
KB11454 - Encrypted files stored on the microSD media card appear as .rem files

• When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"?

When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"? IE always saved photos in the "Photos" file and documents in the "Documents" file. Firefox makes me choose every time. Very annoying.

How about if Firefox is programmed like IE in this ONE thing...
When saving files from internet sources, if the file ends in a typical photo extension such as .jpg, .bmp, .tif etc. it defaults to save it in your PHOTOS folder.
When saving anything like a .doc, .pdf etc. it defaults to save it to your DOCUMENTS.
You could still change it to 'desktop' if that if really where you want all your photos and documents... or some other folder that you decide, but DEFAULTS to the LOGICAL folder.
I have carpal tunnel SO bad that even typing this suggestion is painful and having to make the extra click along with moving the mouse EVERY time I want to save something is painful.
ALSO, I shouldn't need a bunch of ADDONS to accomplish this. I tried downloading one and it did nothing. The problem still exists.

• Where are my compressed files saved? or how do I export them?

once the compressing is completed, what is the next step? The export button is greyed out. Are the compressed files automatically saved to my computer somewhere?

What version?

• Can't view photos in zip file

A friend has sent me some photos that are in a zip file. Can anyone tell me how to open and view them? I have saved the file to the desktop and doubleclicked it. Then I control click and open it with appleworks but I only get the captions that go along with the photos.

If the files have a name ending in .zip, they are compressed. Zip files need to be expanded using Stuffit Expander. After using Stuffit, the file names should end with a graphic identifier, like .jpg. Then open Preview & select the file.

Sorry for the late reply. My email firewall has become a little over zealous & sent a lot of my emails straight to my junk email folder, so I have only just now discovered your reply in my junk mail folder.
The only "don't open files exceeding xxx megabytes" instruction I can find in my Prefs, is in the Bridge Prefs for Thumbnails, & mine is set at 1000mb. The biggest files I handle are bigger than 200mb so I should be able to open a few, not just one.
However, this doesn't explain why I can open a psd format file of 180mb, close it, but then can't open a RAW format file of only 26mb immediately after.
I can open the RAW file only if I restart my computer - very annoying!
However, thanks for the advice about the video card & memory.
So, I'm still stuck as to what the issue is.

• Does anyone know how I can copy photo and video files from the Photo's app on my Macbook, to a USB stick or other external back-up?

I've updated the software on my Macbook to the most recent version; regretting it now; and iPhoto has now become the Photo's app.
The problem is I can no longer back up my photo and video files taken on my phone, saved to my mac, by copying them and saving them on a USB stick or other external hard drive.
I could easily do this with iPhoto, but now Photos app does not let me copy the files when I select them.
Does anyone know if there's a way to save, copy or back-up my photo's and video files: prefreably one that doesn't involve iCloud, as I don't feel like paying for more storage; there must be some way to access those photos/videos from my iPhone to save on another source?

Select the photos and videos in Photos and use the command "File > Export" and select a folder on your USB stick to save the photos to.

• Could not be saved because the source file could not be read.

I tried to download and after a while, this error message: ''[filename] could not be saved because the source file could not be read.'' I've been on google searching but I could not find the answer can someone PLEASE help me. it happened when downloading a game and I've already seen a few times before but it was less important.
sorry for the bad english I used a translator.

This problem isn't only happening with Firefox 4, for windows, as the System Details, and Tags indicate.
I'm using a Mac laptop (OS X 10.5.8 -- Leopard), using Firefox 6, and have been having this problem with large files for quite a while ... possibly since FF 4, but definitely with FF 5. The large files I've had the problem with are in the 500 - 900 MB range, and from commercial sites as well as most recently with a zip file containing photos from a friend which he uploaded to dl.dropbox.com ... attempted it numerous times, after trying the various suggested "fixes", and each time at around 255 MB, the download quits, with the error that file cannot be read from the server.
The various proposed solutions I've found on the web -- resetting the user configured options connected to downloads in FF config (about:config); deleting the compreg.dat file in the FF profile folder, don't pause the download (never have done this) etc.
Others have opined that the problem is flaky intermittent WiFi, or Security/Anti Virus software interfering with FF's accessibility to the file during the download; or a caching problem at one's ISP -- HOWEVER Safari doesn't experience this problem at all. Each time that I've experienced it in FF, I launch Safari, and can download the file completely without any errors.
Would really like to see someone from Mozilla respond to this ... lots of us are experiencing it.
Whatever happened to Netscape's ability to recover from download interruptions and resume a download at the point where it had been interrupted (like when a dial up modem dropped the line in the middle of the download) -- sure would be useful to see that feature come back in FF.
Thanks,
Muiz

• On saving mail as .rtfd file does not save the attachments.

For a few updates to Leopard now I have had a problem with Mail. If I opt to save with attachments the file is saved as a .rtfd file but when I open the said file in Text Edit there are no photos or whatever the attachment was. I have been saving this way for years and only in the last year or so has this problem arisen. I don't want to save the files as .eml files (which DO save the attachments). Anyone else noticed this problem?

Dear Glyn
you posted this bug Oct 19; it still has not been fixed, Is there any way to push Apple people to stop behaving like windows people ?
I much regret I installed the new systemsoftware ...
What can we do to FIX it - i need the feature and it has a button to include the attachment, so it should work

• Saved photos from e-mail to desktop. Now can't get them off.

I saved photos from an e-mail to my desktop as well as I-photos. Now I can't get them off the desktop. How can i do that?

Hello Sungal15,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To remove items from your computer, all you need to do is simply click and drag them to the Trash on your dock.
Delete an item from your Mac
Drag the item to the Trash. Or select the item, then press Command (⌘)–Delete.
Click the Trash, then click Empty. You can also choose Finder > Empty Trash.
When you see a warning message, click OK.
OS X Yosemite: Delete files and folders
Take care,
Alex H.

• Editing a compressed file

So say I have a project in 1080i60 and i compress it down to an MP4 or just a smaller .mov at H.264. Then I delete the original 1080i60 but I need to change the volume level or cut out a small part of the movie. If I put the compressed file in FCP and export it...will it have the same compressed quality? I know obviously it wont be better quality....what is the best way to export it to maintain the quality...knowing that since it is already compressed?
Or the basic question...should you even edit a compressed file or just take your loss and re-edit the original 1080i60?

If all you are doing is cutting, then you probably will not be recompressing. An easy way to tell is how long it takes to export. It it looks like it will take a long time, then it is probably conforming and recompressing the video. That is bad. But it might be possible to cut out a portion, and save as a self-contained movie rather quickly.
You could try doing that with QT Pro, as it is sometimes clearer than FCP about saving video versus compressing video. Some codecs require conforming in FCP if you look at them funny.
As far as audio, I'm guessing you would be able to extract the audio and video tracks, modify the audio, and add the tracks back together. Again, I personally would feel better about this kind of track manipulation in QT Pro.

• How do I scan a photo to a file and then send the file as an attachment via email.

How do I scan a photo to a file and then send the file as an attachment via email.

All of this depends largely on what printer /software you have, which Email client you use and to some extent which OS you are running.
Most HP printers have HP Solution Center which is used to set up scanning, choosing where to save, etc. Once a file/photo is scanned and saved to the folder, open the folder.Select the file and at the top of the window should be the option to 'Email'.
