Saving placeholder shape in InDesign CS5

I have created an irregular placeholder shape for the images in a document I'm creating. I don't believe that the shape can be saved in object styles, but is there a sort of gallery or something that I can save this placeholder in so that it doesn't need to be recreated each time or must the frame be copied and pasted? Here's a sample of the shape.

Snippets are the way to go.

  • How to draw a proper spiral shape in InDesign CS5?

I am facing problem with drawing spiral shapes in InDesign! I cannot figure out how to make a perfect spiral!
Could you please figure a way out for it?
    Thank You,
    Ankit Tanna.

Indesign doesn't have a tool to directly do it...........
If you have Illustrator , Use spiral tool in Illustrtaor and then copy and paste the path in Indesign

  • InDesign CS5 - Text won't align with shape

I've created shapes in InDesign CS5 and then added text boxes (separate elements).  When I try to align the text and the shape, the text box acts as if the wrap function is on and the text is not visible.  I've checked and the settings for both the shape and the text box are set to "no wrap."
I've tried searching for a solution online, but the answers I get are mostly related to wrapping text around a shape or other non-related issues.

Yes - I did that first, thinking I was "hiding" the text.  But the text is in front...
The advice by Willi Adelberger helped - putting the text directly into the shape seems to be working, though I noticed that the text is still not quite aligned correctly...

  • InDesign CS5 7.0 Silent installation?

    Dear all,
in our Company we use the Altiris Deployment solution for packaging and automatic deployment.
We need to create a silent installation of Adobe InDesign CS5 (7.0).
Our machines are running Windows XP SP3.
The installation should be in language german, without an serial (trail). The serial will be inserted
after installation from our IT-Department. All components have to be installed with the automatic
    setup.
The folder structure from the setupfiles is the following:
    --deploy
    --packages
    --payloads
    --resources
    -Set-up.exe
Could someone tell me which commands I have to use to install the files? I think I will also need
an customized "install.xml", is that right?
I am looking forward to get some answers soon.

I've tried all the advice given to date, but the ID CS5 version 7.0.4.553 crash continues to occur on start up only on one user profile with error message EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS).
It looks like others have had a similar problem, but theyve been able to resolve it by copying over their preferences from an earlier version of ID, but I don't have earlier versions on this computer, so I'm out of luck.
I doubt copying over preferences is ever correct. There are no documented cases that I know of where copying preferences works and deleting them does not.
Essentially every crash gives an EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) error. You need to inspect the stack trace for anything that is specific to yours. In your case it references a ProtectiveShutdown, so consult the ProtectiveShutdownLog file in the InDesign Recovery folder for more information.
    You deleted all of these?:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe InDesign CS5
    ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
    ~/Library/Caches/com.adobe.InDesign
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign

  • InDesign CS5 file won't open

At my work, we are working on formatting a book in InDesign. We are using the same base template for each file. I created a front matter document with a table of contents (TOC), list of figures (LOF), list of tables (LOT), acronyms, and glossary using that base template. Everything worked fine; I was able to generate the TOC, LOF, and LOT, and could work with the file with no problem. Then I saved and closed the file. Later that day, I was unable to open the file.
The message I get includes the statement, "You may not have permission or the file may be open already."
No one else had opened it and there are no lock files. The other person using InDesign also cannot open it. I made a copy of the file and saved it in another location and still could not open it.
The files are all on our network. We are using InDesign CS5 and Windows7 (64-bit). The only difference between this file and the others are the modifications that I made to some TOC paragraph styles so two paragraphs could be displayed side-by-side in the TOC (i.e., Chapter 1 Introduction all on one line, where Chapter 1 comes from one paragraph and Introduction comes from another by having no leading on one paragraph style).
Can anyone suggest a solution for this? This is rather urgent as the client needs the book by the end of next week.
Thank you so much for your help.
    regards,
    Marina Michaels

Yes:  The message I get says, "Cannot open (file path and name). You may not have permission or the file may be open already."
    Thanks!

  • InDesign CS5.5 crashes when trying to open ANY CS5.5 document

I am using InDesign CS5.5 and can't open any of my InDesign CS5.5 documents. The message "InDesign has stopped working" appears.
Even when trying to create a new document, again the message "Adobe InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working" - close programme.
InDesign was working perfectly on Friday. Saved and exported a file to pdf, all okay.
    Are you able to help.

    Hi Peter
I uninstalled the whole CS5.5, downloaded and ran the cleaning thing, reinstalled the whole suite but it came up with the message that the install had errors … every other module worked except Indesign which still did the same thing .. it would open, but not an existing or new doc … below is the error log
    Did everything again.. same result
did it again but this time also deleted every folder with reference to 5.5 and cleaned the registry  .. same result
finally, I did it all again, but this time did NOT install Fireworks (because of the error log below), 32bit Photoshop, Flash or the Apple support thingy .. and it now works !!
so it seems there is a problem with one or more of the above … was there an update around 24-26 May ??
Interestingly there's no icon against the Indesign program menu listing (but it still works) but the icon is still shown against all the 'indd' files
We rang support about 4 hours ago, they couldn't help but were going to look into it and get back to us 'within the hour' … needless to say they didn’t .. hope this 'work around' goes onto the blog and helps others
    regards

  • How to make previous version documents(CS1 and CS3) without extension  readable in InDesign CS5

I have some previous version documents of CS1 and CS3  on Mac  which have been saved without any extension e.g 300, CS3doc etc.
When I open such documents in InDesign CS5 they appear to be unreadable .  Only on  selecting 'All documents' filter  I am able to open those documents.
I want to make all such documents (which are without extension) readable with 'All Readable Documents ' also .
How I can do that, please  help me !!!!!

The first thing I'd do is make sure the issue is really what I suspect it is - i.e. I suspect your extension-less documents don't have the proper type and creator.
If you fire up a Terminal window, you should be able to use the GetFileInfo command to check one of the files:
Assume 'sampleFile' is sitting on your desktop, you'd do
    GetFileInfo ~/Desktop/sampleFile
(not sure when/whether GetFileInfo is installed on a Mac - I think it used to be part of Apple's developer tools, but on my Snow Leopard it resides in /usr/bin)
Check what it says for 'type' and 'creator'.
If these are not correct, we've confirmed that that's the reason why they don't show up in your file dialog.
If the issue is type/creator related, I can think of the following options:
    a) Change your code to accept ANY file type/extension - I suspect this would work (not tested!):
    openFileDialog->AddType( '????' );
If memory serves right, '????' should be accepted as a wildcard.
    b) correct the file types BEFORE they are viewed in the File Dialog - for example, if these files are in a very specific folder somewhere, you might be able to scan the folder, and correct their type and creator (e.g. iterate through all extensionless files in folder 'xyz' and change their type and creator). A lot depends on how those files get there, and whether they are tied to a specific folder or not - are they 'old' files, or are they being generated in some workflow? If they're all over a user's system or all over a file server, such pre-scanning and cleaning up file types approach will be a no-go.
    Cheers,
    Kris

  • How do I save image and text as a single image in InDesign CS5.0?

How do I save an image and text as one image in InDesign CS5.0? NOT 5.5.
I need to save the image as a 72-dpi, jpg file for ePub purposes. I designed a book and am handing it off to someone for ePub.
    This is what I've tried:
    1) Copied from InDesign, pasted into a PhotoShop doc as a Smart Object. Saved it as 72 dpi jpg, then imported back into ID.
    2) Took a screenshot of ID page, placed it in PS, saved as 72 dpi, imported into ID
    3) Saved page as a PDF from InDesign, then saved PDF as 72 dpi jpg, then imported into ID.
    4) Save page as a PDF from InDesign, placed into Photoshop and saved
as 72 dpi, then imported into ID.
    5) Saved as an EPS from InDesign, placed in PS, then imported back to ID.
In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.
    HELP!!!

In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.
Naturally what you did will result in rasterized text. Did you preview with high quality settings?
Are you sure the people who will handle that downstream need pixel images and do you have the exact pixel dimensions needed?
Why did you place the image back in Indesign, by the way?

  • InDesign CS5 for Mac crashes on opening file. Have replaced References and all other suggestions.

I am having a problem with InDesign CS5 crashing when I try to open a file that formerly opened just fine. Even restored versions from Time Machine or that I had a backup saved on an external hard drive will not open. I recently had to reconstruct a 90 page magazine for the same reason. I heard that Extensis Suitcase might be causing the problem so I disabled the plug-in, but still can't get the file open. The file in question is full of tables and would be a nightmare to redo. I am running Snow Leopard. It will open briefly and tell me that fonts are missing, then crash.

I have already disabled the Extensis plug-in and am activating the fonts
manually from within Extensis. It's the very latest version, Suitcase
Fusion 3, and it warps my chops that it doesn't play nice with InDesign.
I got rid of the Mindsteam grammar plug-in also and sent a tersely
worded letter to the vendor. When you pay nearly $200 for a plug-in, you
expect it to work. I don't have time for this aggravation! I truly
appreciate the help I've gotten here. This has certainly discouraged me
from using any third-party plug-ins. I was ready to go back to Quark
Xpress. For the moment, everything is behaving.

  • InDesign CS5 lag slow on Snow Leopard 10.6

I am reaching the end of patience with this one and starting to wish i'd not paid for a CS5 upgrade.
I installed under Mac OS 10.5 originally, did all updates and had font and other deathly slow issues in Photoshop.
In the end, I enacted a TOTAL system maintenance routine and upgraded to System 10.6 in order to try and get round probs with CS5.
I since have ditched all prefs, reset all caches, cleared all logs, done total font checks and removed a couple of corrupt ones, repaired disk permissions etc etc etc....  Photoshop 'appears' to work ok, although saving and saving to web can be sluggish (pizza wheel waiting for it....)
InDesign CS5 is now taxing my productivity. I thought it was my Wacom Intuous 3 tablet, but find the issue (at the mo as I've not noticed anything significant yet in Illustrator or Photoshop) only occurs with InDesign CS5.
The issue is the glitchy interface - stepped or delayed movements of objects across the page, selecting menu dialogue boxes can take a second when i click on a value, slightly steppy movements make selecting the tiny up and down arrows on some menus very tricky to be accurate.  PLUS saving and saving PDFs in particular as well as PLACE images CMD-D can be deathly slow.  It used to be almost instaneous, slowed only by the hard drive firing up. Now i try to do things and have to wait on many actions. It's doing my head in!  This is NOT PRODUCTIVE.
In InDesign i have tried turning off Live Redraw, dropping display quality to fast (makes working almost impossible as i need to see what i'm doing), and disabled the Preflight option that is on by default, and i'm sure other options too i've seen on forums.  But no better.
I have a Quad Core 3Ghz Intel Mac with 14Gb RAM, and an NIVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card.
IS this APPLE or ADOBE issue?  How on earth can i get my speedy productivity back so i can move around the screen smoothly, save and place quickly, and select menu dialogues without waiting for it to react..... HELP!

thanks for the heads-up Peter.  Id not have thought to deactivate Adobe stuff first.
I've ordered a new WD Caviar Black (larger cache than i have on current drive) so a slight upgrade of drive, and as you say, a preserved backup.  I dont have any spare bays in my Mac as i've filled them with other drives used for backups and other stuff, so i may need to buy an external case for the SATA i'm taking out.  No matter, it will be sorted this weekend.
thanks all for help. fingers crossed this rather drastic step works!
Glad I thought of it. However, if you're keeping the drive, and don't have other installations, you can keep the backup drive installations active if you'll have a use for them if you boot from that drive. With your slow performance issues, you'll probably not want to use InDesign on that drive, but perhaps you'd want to use some other rarely-used apps from that drive. Yes, space, the final frontier.
OWC has USB drive adapters that work with many types of drives, including SATA, for about $30. They're open gizmos - no enclosure, no power supply, no fan, etc. They also have notebook-sized (2.5") drives up to 1TB  with USB portable enclosures under $200, less for smaller.
Consider an extra empty drive for use with Time Machine, as an ongoing automatic backup. It's very comforting. An alternative or supplement is yet another drive that you use with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, inexpensive shareware, that make complete and/or incremental backups, on demand or on schedule. I use Time Machine to back up a Time Capsule drive - wired or wirelessly - and CarbonCopy Cloner to back up to a portable USB drive that's Velcro'd onto the top case of my MacBook Pro.
Oh, and for suspenders to go with my two belts, or maybe that's a belt to go with my two suspenders, I also use Carbonite online backup - wirelessly or wired, about $5/month for unlimited storage. Their gotcha is that data is kept while it's on your drive, and then they delete it from your storage 30 days after you delete it from your drive. I had tried other online storage - Mozy, and some others, but at that time, about a year ago, they didn't work reliably. Probably better now. Not sure if they keep data after you delete it from your drive, or for how long after you delete it. I think also that some online storers define "unlimited" differently.

When attempting to batch create PDFs from Indesign CS5 files using Acrobat Pro 9's File>Create PDF>Batch Create Multiple Files ... option the operation fails with the error 'Could not find the application that created this file: [path to file] Please select a file created by an application that resides on your computer.' as shown in the screenshot below:

  • InDesign CS5.5 v.7.5 won't open some files because it needs plug in updates, but it won't let me upgrade

I have InDesign CS5.5, v.7.5.  I'm trying to open a rather large file with lots of images, but it says "Please upgrade plugins/latest version", but when I tried to update it with download 7.5.1 through Adobe Patch Installer, it keeps saying "update is not applicable."  Or it will almost install and then give me an error code.
InDesign will let me open certain files, but not the one I really need.  It was working properly a few days ago.
This InDesign subscription I got was in Feb 2012 though my school.  Help!

If you are using CS5.5 it isn't part of a subscription to creative cloud (hard to tell if that's what you mean), so you may have a newer version of InDesign installed as well (they are not mutually exclusive). That said, the last patch for CS5.5 was 7.5.3, but it doesn't really matter in this case. That warning indicates the files were saved in a newer version of InDesign and cannot be opened in CS5.5.

  • How do I open a PageMaker document in InDesign CS5?

When I try to open a PageMaker document with InDesign CS5 (Mac OSX 10.7.5) I get an error message that it "Cannot Open file.... Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format might be missing, or the file may be open in another application."  It's certainly not open in another application anywhere, It is, indeed, a PageMaker document which is supposed to be supported.  Before updating to current Mac OS, I used to be able to easily open this file with an old copy of PageMaker, but that no longer works on this OS!
    Thank you!

    Hi, Mike,
I found another copy of this file on my laptop and I think it might not be broken.  When I try to open it in text edit or Mellel, I get a much larger document with much of the material I know is supposed to be there.  Would you be open to giving it one last shot?  The new dropbox link is https://www.dropbox.com/s/12eqa6hh6tlse89/New%20Kabbalat%20Shabbat%20CBH (which, I know, looks like the old one, but I deleted that file and just uploaded this one).
If you can open and save it (possible saving it in PM 6.5 or some other form I can than open with InDesign, or just sending me a pdf, I'd be very grateful.
