Saving png images at 72 pixels resolution
Hi,
I have been creating images for our Flash designer, saving them in Fireworks as png images. We recently discovered that they are being saved at 71.89 pixles resolution, while in the Flash they need to be 72 pixels. To solve this problem the designer has to open the pngs in Photoshop and resave them as a png, which is a problem.
Is this difference in resolution due to both PhotoShop and Fireworks being different products and originally from different companys, or due to me working on a PC and our Flash designer working on a Mac.
Can I set Fireworks to save pngs by default at 72 pixles resolution so any further images I create work in our Flash movie?
Stephen
Hi,
I've just found out that the Flash designer is using Virtual Desktop on their mac, and doing their development in the virtual pc enviroment. Not sure if the Mac way of interpreting image resolutions is 'passed' to the virtual PC? My Fireworks is set up as 72 pixels/inches as the resolution so I think the mac/pc differences is still the cause of the problems.
Thanks
Stephen

Saving an image to a higher resolution from a lower one
I have photoshop cs6 on my MacBook Pro and downloaded images I'm working on for a friend who needs them for professional use. They're all in 72 dpi so I managed to save them at a higher resolution of 300 dpi, and in Tiff format but when I try to email them the images revert back to 72 dpi. How can I keep the resolution at 300 or higher for email
ThanksI know you haven't asked for advice about the actual re-sampling process, but I can't help myself .
If the images are for print reproduction or a similar high quality requirement the results are likely to be very poor even if up-sampled to 300dpi. It's OK to down-sample images if the pixel data is there in the first place. If it's only 72dpi and then up-sampled, and even if it looks good on screen, it'll be rubbish in commercial print.
The exception might be if the actual dimensions of the 72dpi image is large and it is up-sampled to 300dpi but at the same time the dimensions are reduced considerably that should help preserve some quality.
All that said, if you are using Mail, try selecting Actual Size, as shown in the image (if you haven't already). The option only appears when you add an attachment to an email. -
Saving .png images from Photoshop for FCP
Is it best to save them as Interlaced or Progressive?
They are for import into Final Cut Pro, then exported as part of a motion menu for use in DVD Studio Pro.
Will one option give better quality over another?
The project is SD PAL.Marc Morris wrote:
One thing that's confusing me is some button boxes I've made up for DVDSP.
They don't look the same thickness in FCP yet they are identical in Photoshop. It's very annoying!
Might be because they are not sitting exactly on a scan line, so a top or bottom edge is getting cut off.
Try moving the suspects up or down slightly.
Do you have a thin, surrounding edge on them? Make it a little bit thicker. -

PNG images revive deleted images in the form of a thumbnail, potential risk
Saving a PNG image will revive deleted photos. To replicate this, save a PNG image, such as the ones on XKCD's "What If?", and deleted images get revived in the form of a thumbnail overlapping the image.
This has been here since IOS 5, according to http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/11/14/bug-resurrects-deleted-image-thumbnail s-in-ios-7-photos-app-dates-back-to-ios-5
Knowledge of this could be abused. If I get free acess to someone else's Ipad, I can just spam saving PNG images over and over to see their sensitive images saved as a thumbnail overlapping the PNG image's thumbnail.
How do I delete the thumbnails? It seems that when you delete a photo, it saves the thumbnail. This is supported by the PNG images reviving deleted photos in the form of thumbnails.Send feedback/suggestions to Apple.

Problem with CFimage / PNG images
I have a problem saving PNG images from another server, for example itunes, some work, some don't
The following image will open fine in my browser ->

This is the error I am receiving:
An exception occurred while trying to read the image.

I believe some images have malformed/incorrect headers. I'm guessing this is a CF issue (I use CF8), because it loads fine in a browser.
Anybody have a solution to this? Maybe an alternative way to retrieve the image? Custom tag?
Thanks
MarkI found the issue and solution. The problem was with the Java, the JVM had issues reading SOME PNG's from servers, but not all, there must be a newer way of encoding them that was not around when the version of java I had was created, or it's just a bug. I had an earlier version of 1.6 which is downloaded as version SE 6 from Oracle.
As per some instructions by Ben Forta I tried an update of the JVM to version 7 (1.7.x),
http://forta.com/blog/index.cfm/2013/3/3/Upgrading-ColdFusion-To-Java-7
The update worked on my local dev machine which was CF8 with Win 7 64bit, and it actually fixed the CFIMAGE issue!
However, when I did the same update, with the same java file on the same version of CF8, CF would no longer restart throwing an error that it could not find a file.
Luckily I had a backup of the config file because I could not switch settings back any other way if CF would not start the administrator (Java also makes a .BAK anyway)
I tried the first build of version 7, same problem, so I went to the very last version 6, build 45, it installed, and it also fixed the CFIMAGE crash!
A couple of points for anybody else trying this
Make sure you have a back up the config, in CF8 it's located here (different to the location in Bens instructions)
Coldfusion8\runtime\bin\jvm.config
Also note that the forward and backward slashes are different for the built in JVM that ships with CF and is set in the administrator, and the location you will specify
Original location: C:/ColdFusion8/runtime/jre
New location: C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\
Here is the location to the Java file (
Java SE Runtime Environment 6u45)
Java Archive Downloads - Java SE 6
Took me days to get to the bottom of this, but the fix actually takes just a few simple steps and a few minutes, of course

I was asked to create an image for an app at 128x128. Its to be a 24bit png. I created the Ai file at the specified size, but when I tried to save as png, it was horribly pixelated. I tried to veiw it on several devices (phone and tablet), but the image is still the same. Can anyone pleeeeease help me. Anti ailised is on, using cs6.
shannasays,
It is crucial to have the exact paixel x pixel size.
Did you use Save for Web so you could see that the image size was right in the Image Size window?
Or did you Export, and in that case did you set the resolution to 72? If you set it to 300 or whatever else than 72, you wil get pixelation/blurriness because of resampling.
It is important to have Art Optimized ticked. in Save for Web it is hidden away in the Image Size window. -
Captivate 5 - Inserted PNG images from Fireworks are pixelated
The PNG images I inserted from Fireworks are showing up pixelated when I play the file in a browser, but look fine while I'm working in Captivate. Any thoughts?
THANKS!
BirgitHello,
Did you try changing the publish quality? Because of the fact that CP when converting to SWF will still be doing some compression, I really would give that first of all a try.
PNG allows even partial transparency, and certainly its 24-bit version. That is one of the reasons that it is superior to JPEG (no transparency) and GIF (only 100% transparency). But I'm not really used to Fireworks, always using Photoshop for graphical assets.

Saving a tiff image N preserviing its resolution
hi guys ,
I am facing a problem saving an existing tiff file to a tiff format.
My original image is of 600 dpi both horizontal and vertical resolution.
When i save using my patch of code the resulting image is 96dpi in resolution.
I need to make sure taht there is no loss when i am saving my image
public void saveImage()
File file3; // The file that the user wants to save.
JFileChooser fd; // File dialog that lets the user specify the file.
fd = new JFileChooser(".");
fd.setDialogTitle("Save Image As TIFF...");
int action = fd.showSaveDialog(this);
if (action != JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) {
return;
file3 = fd.getSelectedFile();
if (file3.exists()) {
// If file already exists, ask before replacing it.
action = JOptionPane.showConfirmDialog(this,
"Replace existing file?");
if (action != JOptionPane.YES_OPTION)
return;
try {
FileOutputStream os = new FileOutputStream(file3);
TIFFEncodeParam param1 = new TIFFEncodeParam();// USE WHEN CONVERTING TO TIFF FILE
if(factor.isBinary())
//param1.setCompression(TIFFEncodeParam.COMPRESSION_GROUP4); //USE IF BINARY IMAGE
param1.setCompression(TIFFEncodeParam.COMPRESSION_GROUP4);
//param1.setCompression(TIFFEncodeParam.COMPRESSION_NONE);//USE IF BINARY IMAGE
//param1.setCompression(TIFFEncodeParam.COMPRESSION_LZW); //USE IF BINARY IMAGE
else
param1.setCompression(TIFFEncodeParam.COMPRESSION_PACKBITS);
//param1.setCompression(TIFFEncodeParam.COMPRESSION_NONE);
ImageEncoder enc =ImageCodec.createImageEncoder("TIFF",os,param1);
//enc.encode(source);
enc.encode(backup);
os.flush();
os.close();
catch (IOException e)
// Some error has occurred while trying to write.
//Show an error message.
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this,
"Sorry, an error has occurred:\n" + e.getMessage());
Any suggestions ?
AadilHi,
Could you find any method to change the tiff image compression or even resolution.
When i try this,
String filename="c:\\sample1.tif";
File file = new File(filename);
SeekableStream s = new FileSeekableStream(file);
ImageDecoder dec = ImageCodec.createImageDecoder("TIFF", s, null);
//RenderedImage op = new NullOpImage(dec.decodeAsRenderedImage(), null,null, OpImage.OP_COMPUTE_BOUND);
RenderedImage op = new NullOpImage(dec.decodeAsRenderedImage(0),null,null,OpImage.OP_IO_BOUND);
ByteArrayOutputStream output = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
TIFFEncodeParam tp=new TIFFEncodeParam();
tp.setCompression(TIFFEncodeParam.COMPRESSION_GROUP4);
//tp.setCompression(TIFFEncodeParam.COMPRESSION_GROUP3_2D);
ImageEncoder encoder = ImageCodec.createImageEncoder("TIFF", output, tp);
encoder.encode(op);
encoder.setParam(tp);
System.out.println(tp.getCompression());
byte compressedData[] = output.toByteArray();
FileOutputStream fouts=new FileOutputStream("c:\\sample2.tif");
fouts.write(compressedData);
output.close();
fouts.close();
It's giving errro saying that "End of data reached before next EOL encountered" when i call encoder.encode(op);
method..
any suggestions????? -
Gettin Pixel data from png image
Hi,
Has anyone worked with the byte data returned my the getSnapshot() method of the VideoControl (MMAPI). I believe the default is png( i have tested this on Nokia 3650 and 6600 and on Siemens SX1).
In all the devices that support Nokia UI library i can get the pixel values from the byte data by using the com.nokia.mid.ui library, specifically the DirectGraphics.getPixels() method.
In MIDP 2.0 devices i can do this using the Image.getRGB method.
But what about MIDP 1.0.3 devices that do not have the Nokia library ? i believe that the byte data returned by the camera is of raw png format. I have never done this before and so far my search on the web has not been fruitful.
Can anyone point me to information abt the raw png Image (number of bytes of header ... etc) so that i can write my own code to extract the information or better yet point me to the code that does this.http://www.wotsit.org/

Just as the title said. iPod touch 4th generation, 4.3.5, not jailbroken. Different png images have different, but specific to each image, pictures that they overlap. Could this be automatic inaccessable-file storing on that confusing extra space? I don't know. I just want them off there.
...In the meantime...
If you can get one of these faulty pictures to display on your iPod Touch (that you don't mind sharing with us) take a screenshot of it. You may already know this, but to take a screenshot on your iPod Touch, press the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time. The screen should briefly flash white and a picture should be saved in the camera roll.
To post that picture on this thread, once you have saved the picture onto your computer, simply click the camera icon at the menu bar that displays when you write a post and follow the prompt:
and then perhaps someone may be able to throw some light on what's happening.
Do you delete the pictures directly from the Camera Roll, or by using the file manager on your computer? I wonder if it's possible that a delete-on-iPod may not be doing the job properly.
Usually, when I Sync my iPod, I delete the Camera Roll from the iPod using the computer.
I have not seen any other posts on this issue, so I don't know if that's the problem, but at this time, I think you simply have to narrow down when and under what circumstances, this happens. Only then could anyone work out what the cause is.
If I may offer you some advice of a personal nature for your future benefit:
You're correct, I don't know the exact circumstances surrounding this or the other factors in your life, but neither I, nor anyone else here needs to. But the fact that you're able to afford - and have access to - an iPod makes your life better than many in the world.
If you're seeking help or advice, in any sphere of your life, it's far more efficient to concentrate on the facts relevant to the issue than to attempt include into your narrative, any perceived slighting you may harbour or grievance you may have with other people. If you allow one person's effect on you to affect your judgemnent of other people, you will only make your own life more intolerable. -
Saving batch of images down to multiple resolutions?
Something I've been running into but have no idea how to actually have Photoshop do this. When I get high res images from a client, we save them down to medium res and low res. To do this currently, I have two actions, the medium saving the images down to 150 dpi and the low saving down to 72 dpi. Right now I've been running each separately through the image processor. This is all well and good, but ideally I would love to run one script that once I select the folder with the high res images, would run both actions, putting the downsized medium res images into a MEDRES folder and low res into a LOWRES. Seems silly, but it would save time and would be especially helpful for the other guys around who are not as photoshop savy.
Are you actually downsampling the image, or simply reassigning a resolution? It sounds like the latter, in which case using PS sounds like overkill. Resolution means nothing to a digital image, it's just a number assigned to an attribute (is it just in the metadata?) that can be read by a printer. I would think there would be all kinds of programs that could simply change the number without having to actually edit the photo.

Saving flash drawing as png image to database
Hey guys and girls,
i've seen a few good examples to save out a png of the current flash display area from a webbrowser from a flash, such as:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/saving_flash_graphics.html
http://activeden.net/item/logo-maker-image-editor/99565
http://www.flepstudio.org/forum/tutorials/507-swf-png-actionscript-3-0-bytearray-class.htm l
what they normally do is stream the image data through a png encoder to a web server somewhere and then decode the image data back to current webbrowser and then trigger the web browser SAVE function, by prompting user to select a path and file name to save, like a download.
What I’m trying to do is very similar, however, the difference is when you click that save button, you can save your png image directly to a certain location with a fixed file name, such as on your local computer:
D:\flashimage\001.png
or on a file server: 10.21.111.111\flash_image\001.png
so i cant find the syntax here. can anyone give me some hints on this? thanks ahead!the user.
Thanks for replying. -
Greetings all,
I've been a software developer for many years, but am not very savy in the design elements. So, much of what I'm going to say will probably sound "newbie", so please forgive me in advance.
So, I'm trying to get a transparent image to fly in from the side. So, I *thought* I was doing the correct thing by moving the "symbol" off of the visible portion of the stage, and creating a motion tween to move it onto the stage. The motion works, but the quality of the image in general (and the text in specific) looks pixelated.
Thus, I did a little bit of snooping, and everyone said that you should start with a bitmap. So I saved the image from Photoshop into .bmp format, and was able to set the properties to "allow smoothing" and with lossless compression. So far, so good. Now, as I expected, the transparency is no longer there...
So here's the question: how can I make this image retain its quality, still have transparency, and a motion tween?
It seems like this is some set of characteristics that don't play well together, even though I see this type of thing online ALL the time.
I tried "Trace Bitmap" to convert to a raster image, and tried to follow some suggestions online, but when I do "Trace Bitmap", it ends up looking like it has a bunch of grayish dots on the image... definitely NOT what I was expecting.
Thanks for your help!
JPBGo back to using the png, and set the smoothing allowance. That should take care of the quality. In Flash, a "bitmap" will often refer to any type of image element... .bmp's are probably dinosaurs (as in extinct) where Flash usage is concerned.

Photoshop CC 2014 Crashes When Opening or Saving PNG Files
I'm having an issue where opening or saving PNG files causes my copy of Photoshop CC 2014 to crash.
I've updated to the latest version, restarted my computer and have no plugins installed. I have also re-installed the program from the Creative Cloud application, although I haven't tried a full uninstall/reinstall sequence.
I'm running an x64 version of Windows and have tried both the 64 and 32 bit versions of Photoshop - neither works.
Other file formats don't appear to cause any issue - the problem is specific to PNG files (does Adobe Photoshop depend on any PNG library like LibPNG? Perhaps an older version has been installed by a different application?)
This issue seems to have occured in the past on the Adobe forums, but there is no clear resolution.Part of the information is missing but your running CC 14.1.2 not CC 2014, and14.1.2 needs to be updated to 14.2.1.
