Saving podcasts as non-podcasts

I have collected numerous podcasts that are good enough to keep indefinitely. When I listen to them they reappear under the Podcast library heading, along with the Podcast title and a new "subscribe" button. What I want is for them to appear in a playlist to which I've assigned them.
How do I accomplish this?

There are tags that are sent with the RSS feed for every podcast, including ones to place podcasts in categories, provide descriptions, mark explicit, etc. There's even one (<itunes:block>) that can be used to keep the podcast from showing up under the Podcast listing! But the way to get access to these tags after the podcast has been downladed seems to be an impenetrable mystery, even though they clearly are retained within the file after download.
The best solution I have so far for mp3 podcasts is to select their files in iTunes and convert their id3 tags to version 1. You can do this using the Advanced menu or with a right-click (control-click). It seems id3v1 isn't compatible with the metadata that stores the 'Podcast' tag, and so it discards it. However, I'm not sure it won't discard or alter useful tag information in the process.
Alternatively, if you have Fission, you can open and save the files in that. Fission resaves them without re-encoding them, and regenerates the tags, not including the Podcast tag. But since Fission isn't Automator-friendly and I don't know AppleScript, I haven't been able to process more than one file at a time with Fission.
So the answer to your question is, "there are ways, just not really good ways." Not as far as we know, yet.

  • Saving podcasts as non-podcasts - Update

Last year I started a thread with the title +"Saving podcasts as non-podcasts".+ Although I subscribed to it, notifications somehow ceased to arrive and I forgot about the thread.
The problem the thread addressed boils down to the fact that podcasts set an uneditable tag that identifies the track as a podcast. If this tag is not edited or deleted, the track will, when loaded into iTunes, always appear in the Podcasts library. (I'm assuming people know how to choose to load, or not load, their multimedia files into iTunes here.) So if, for example, one had archived a series of language-learning podcasts that one wanted to keep in iTunes, they would always take up room in the Podcasts library and compete for space and attention with ever-changing, "current" podcasts. When one has lots of archived, "permanent" podcasts to keep in iTunes, this mixing of old podcasts with the new can create a hassle.
In the time since the original thread was archived I found a better solution to this problem than those proposed there. Unfortunately for Mac users, it involves delving into the Windows world, but that's what Boot Camp and virtualization software are for, right?
There's a free Windows batch tag processing program called mp3tag that has a menu command for "Extended tags...". This command allows for editing of normally uneditable file tags, including one it calls "IPODCAST" (which is not its "official" name).
    http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html
Since finding mp3tag I've been able to fire up Parallels, launch mp3tag, batch process folders full of archived podcast files, and import them into iTunes without their appearing in the Podcast library.
mp3tag edits the Podcast tag of mp3 and m4a files but not of AACs. About 95% of podcasts are in mp3 format and the rest are split between m45a and AAC, so if you use mp3tag, a small percentage of your podcast files won't convert, and you'll have to use another method or just...let them go.
I'd prefer a solution that allows for staying in the Mac realm, but short of that, this isn't a horrendous solution. As always, I'm open for suggestions.

Panglos, I need to do the exact opposite. I find myself finding podcasts that have ARCHIVED episodes that I download as .mp3. I'd like to take these .mp3 files and get them INTO the podcast category in iTunes. Can the software below do that, or can I do it manually? Changing the Genre, as you probably know, doesn't do it.
    Thanks!

I can download and listen to other podcasts but none from NPR.
I have tried downloading the podcasts on computers that run Windows 7 and Windows 8.  Other podcasts, music etc. download fine.
    iTunes version:  11.3.0.54
I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling iTunes and I have tried unsubscribing and resubscribing to the podcasts.
I don't have trouble getting NPR podcasts from the store. I just can't play them in iTunes.

For additional context and to verify if we are talking about the same behavior.  Here is what the download screen looks like on my iPod:

  • Is it possible to manually add podcasts to the podcast section of an iphone

    Hello everyone.
I've been trying to figure out a way to manually add podcasts to my iphone and have them show up in the podcast section. I can add podcasts fine to the music section, that works and they play fine but they can be hard to find amid the thousands of songs I have.
When I try to manually add podcasts to the podcasts section in itunes, I get the sad red circle with a line through it, instead of the happy blue plus sign that I get when I add podcasts to the music section.
Podcasts that I download are classified correctly, but the ones I want to add can't be downloaded anywhere anymore (licensing restrictions I believe).
Am doing something wrong or is this the way itunes is meant to work? Something misconfigured maybe?
I'm using itunes 7.6.2.9 on Vista.

For some reason known only to Apple, only files downloaded through iTunes can be in the podcast section of iPod. As far as I know there is still no supported way around this.
Occassionaly someone reports getting around issue by manually editing the file using a hex editor. This involves comparing iTunes downloaded file with non-iTunes downloaded file to find the difference. Once found, the equivalent setting in other files can be changed. I have never done it though.

    Greetings Heather,
After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error with the Podcasts app. You may want to consider restarting the device first, and then resetting if that does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities,

  • N96 Podcast problems - some podcasts have suddenly...

I've recently noticed that some podcasts on my 96 have vanished.  Music player cannot see/list them however they are clearly still on the phone as i can see them via file manager. I've refreshed the music library and it seem these podcasts are totally invisible to the music player now.
Anyone got anything similar or solved it already ??
Oh yes this was occured around the same time as my v20 firmware update.  Alongside another gallery problem i'm having and posted about i'm begining to wonder if version 20 firmware has got inherent bugs in it and messed up my phone.  Any offers ??

Is the music player finding any music at all?
Where are you looking for the podcasts in the Podcast library or as part of the All songs?
It could be that old podcasts may have lost the "podcast" tag when the firmware was updated. Are new podcasts also not being found?

  • Blank podcast logo in podcasts app

I need help. A long time ago, I had a similar issue on a podcast I eventually became uninterested in. I figured I'd just delete it, and all would be well. Since then, I've restored my iPad. Now the same darn thing is happening with my personal favorite podcast. Roosterteeth podcast, for any who care. Any help?

So, the actual Rooster Teeth logo is missing and it's replaced by a generic podcast logo, correct? It might be a problem on their end, perhaps they didn't include the logo for that episode?

  • Podcasts not in Podcast Selection

When I upgraded iTunes from 6 to 7, my podcasts in iPod moved from podcasts to albums and artists although they are under podcasts in iTunes. Nothing is under podcasts on my iPod until I go all the way from menu to music to genres to podcasts, where it says artists at top and has other music mixed in. Otherwise it is mixed up with my other music categories which is also in a state of disorder. Is there any way to get only the podcasts in the podcast category from music? How do I organize this mess? Thanks for any help.

It must be a setting in iTunes or on iPod. On my iPOd podcasts are stored in music/podcasts/podcast name.
The files on my hard drive are in iTunes/podcasts/podcst name.

Never mind.  After a few hours I either finally figured it out or my computer decided to show me all the icons I needed to click.

  • Problems with my podcast updating on Podcast App.

    Hi folks.
My podcast What It Is, updates on iTunes very quickly after we post it on our wordpress blog. However, we are having some major issues with the podcast on the podcast app.
-The episodes do not update on the podcast app. You need to go to the search function, search the show and then download the new episode. The auto download and updates DO NOT work for our subscribers.
-The names of the episodes do not appear on the Podcast app, as well. It just says 'whatitispodcast' for every epsiode when viewing the show in the podcast app. It is also showing the relase date of every episode as 2011-12-31
Should I send an email to iTunes support or is there a problem I can fix?
    Thanks folks.
    -Taylor

Oh man, I really love this question. It's so uncommon!
To avoid repeating myself, you can find some answers here, here, and here.

There should be two sparse bundles on the TC, one for each Mac.  If you click the TC in a Finder sidebar, you should see something like this (in Column View):
If you see the sparse bundle for the iMac there, but not on the window where you do a full system restore (after starting from your Recovery HD or OSX Install disc), they may be corrupted (especially if your iMac was failing at the time of the last backup).
Try repairing those backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Then try the full restore again, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.  Note that if you suspect problems on the most recent backup, you might want to select an earlier one.

  • Video podcast on non-video ipod

I wanna download ask a ninja podcast so I can listen to it on my 20 gig iPod, but its a video podcast. Will I be able to listen to it on my iPod without the video? Or will it just not work?

It doesn't work on mine, as is.
Many TV Shows, etc. purchased from the Music Store can be converted to sound only. Right Click>Convert Selection to [Audio Format]. This slightly defeats the purpose of spending an extra $1 for the video, though.
I don't think that trick works with Podcasts.

  • Podcast library non-functional since upgrade

    Hi,
Seven days ago, I updated iTunes. For two days(Sunday and Monday), iTunes would not start, saying it could not find my library (which is on an external hard drive). On Wednesday, it found my library, but not my podcasts. On Thursday, it found my podcasts, but they were no longer sorted the same way- they looked more like my music list. All the settings are set for podcast, but they do not sync as podcasts, nor do they update. I even tried re-subscribing to a couple, and the files look the same as the older ones. I have deleted all iTunes/Quicktime, et cetera, reinstalled, and the same thing happens. Apple care hasn't a clue. Does anyone else know about this issue?

    needed a quicktime update!!
