Saving podcasts as playlists + sync to iPod

Trouble moving podcasts to playlist. My attempts are thwarted by some internal logic I do not understand.
Also, I dragged and dropped several podcasts to a custom playlist. These display on my laptop but only 30% sync to the iPod.
What's that about?
Chris

Sorry, I have no answer for you either as I am just experiencing this myself. I've been having major issues with my (6 month old, btw) iPod lately and wonder if it's time to restore?
I keep having to reset it and every time I try to start it back up, it crashes. I'm guessing a restore will help this but was also wondering if it will help the podcast issue too?

  • ItunesU podcasts won't sync to ipod

    Hi,
I've tried to follow the instructions about how to sync podcasts from itunesU to your ipod. It says to select your device when it appears then click on the itunesU button and select the podcasts you want to sync and click "apaly". Well if I'm selecting the device then when I select the itunesU folder I have deselected the device. More to the point, there is no "apply" feature appearing. What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't it automatically sync the same way music does?

I think you may have misunderstood the instruction.
Connect the iPod to iTunes and then select the device (which will appear on the left hand side). You should now see the Summary screen which shows (among other things) an icon for the iPod with detail about it, along with a capacity bar at the bottom of the screen.
Look at the top of the screen (not the left hand side) and you will see *Summary, Music, Movies, TV programmes, Podcasts, iTunes U, Books, Photos, Info.* Select *iTunes U* from that list. On this "pane" or tab, you will see *Sync iTunes U* and some options listed beneath that. Make sure the *Sync iTunes U* has a tick in the box and that you have chosen the options suitable for you from the list below it. (If you choose *Automatically include/all/items of/all collections* that will put all the iTunes U on the iPod.) Once you make any changes to these options, there should be either an Apply button and a Revert button, or a Sync button at the bottom right of the screen. (It depends on what changes you have made!) Make sure you click on the Apply or Sync button in order for your choice to be implemented.
To actually find the iTunes U episodes on your iPod depends on which iPod you have! I'm not joking! I only know about the iPod Classic and the iPod Touch (therefore the iPhone as well), so if you have any other model, I suggest you use the search facility on the iPod to find the episodes.
On the _iPod Touch:_ they're hiddden under the Music menu. So navigate to *Music/More/iTunes U.*
On the _iPod Classic:_ for some reason, I can only find iTunes U programmes in the Playlists menu. The Playlists menu can be removed from the *Main Menu* and the *Music Menu,* but I will assume (unless you tell me otherwise) that you can see the Playlists menu on the *Main & Music* menus. So navigate to *Playlists/iTunes U* and you should see the episodes.
Actually - on the iPod Classic you will notice the iTunes U epsiodes appear under both Artist and the Songs menus - a bit weird I think. However, iTunes U programmes (like Podcasts) are set by default to *skip when shuffling,* so if you want to play music on shuffle, don't worry because the iTunes U programmes will not play.
    Has that helped?

  • Podcasts won't sync to ipod; podcast icon gone

I have been happily downloading podcasts to Itunes and syncing them to my ipod nano 4th generation for months. Suddenly, after syncing two podcasts (Itunes said successfully), there were no podcasts on the nano and when I connected it again, the podcast icon under the device menu for the nano on Itunes was gone.
I have reset and restored the nano, reloaded all the songs, unsubscribed to the podcasts and resubscribed. Now when I try and sync a podcast, I receive the message that the ipod could not be synced, because the required disk could not be found. What the heck happened?

I'm having a similar problem in that I cannot a way to keep podcasts on my iPod. Every time I sync my iPod, iTunes automatically removes all episodes that I've already listened to, even if I want to keep them and they are still present in my iTunes library on the computer.
I think this is a different problem!
I've already checked the option in "Settings" that says keep "all episodes." But the iPod doesn't keep all episodes, only iTunes.
I assume you mean the settings _in iTunes_ for iTunes. To control what stays on your iPod, connect the iPod to iTunes and click on the device when it shows up in iTunes. You should see the Summary pane. Just along from there is the Podcasts pane. Select that and on this pane you can select *Keep all epsiodes* (on the iPod). Make your choice and Sync again to activate the change. If you have problems with this, post again.

  • Podcasts won't sync to iPod

I have some podcasts that aren't syncing to my iPod.
I have tried resetting my iPod.
I have tried un-syncing, letting it complete, disconnecting my iPod then reconnecting it and choosing "sync all podcasts". When I do that, all the podcasts sync over except for those ones.
I have tried selecting specifically those podcasts only, and choosing sync. The little swirly sync icon shows up for a second, then disappears, and no podcasts are synced.

  • Podcast Smart Playlist Sync - Fix

If your iPhone and iPad can't sync Smart Playlists:
I figured it out after a few hours in the One-to-One classes where they told me it couldn't be done.
    1. Go to "Edit Smart Playlist".
    2. Turn off "Live Updating".
    3. Go to Device then Podcasts.
    4. Option should show up to "Include Episodes from Playlist".
If "Live Updating" is on then the option to sync the playlist disapears from the device setup.
You just need to manually update the smart playlist every time before you sync it.

I found a potential work around. I am still testing it. Works via usb or wifi sync.
In music, make sure "Entire music library" is not selected. If you want music to sync pick the playlist you want.
In podcast, make sure "automatically include all unplayed" is not selected. You will need to pick select podcast only playlist to sync over.
I am suspecting the music sync is screwing up the smart playlist for podcast when you choose "Entire music library" or "automatically inclue all unplayed" is screwing up the music. Sometimes all my podcast playlist are removed from itunes, other times only a few of them. So by separating the sync out by their individual playlist I haven't had any problems yet, but i am still testing. There could be other unknown variables causing it to happen I haven't discovered.
But if you do find yourself with missing playlist and don't want to painstakingly re make them. Go into your <Previous iTunes Libraries> folder. There should be some previous backups of your past library to restore from.

  • Video podcasts no longer sync with iPod Touch

I am using latest version of iTunes 10.1.1 (4) and latest os 10.6.5 on MacBook Pro with iPod Touch (gen 3). I subscribe to a video podcast and in beginning it worked, but for last 2 months though they download into iTunes and I can watch them, they are either not syncing to my iPod or I cannot find them. Before they were in Podcast list along with audio podcasts.

Yeah I noticed some videos we'rent syncing to my iPod 5th Gen now that I switched to Mac, and reformatted my iPod, and was reminded that some items wouldn't transfer. These were certain podcasts, as well as a HD TV Show Episode. (I thought HD TV show purchases came with a SD version for iPod, but maybe it got lost in the transfer or I deleted it sometime)....but WHATEVER:
If you want, you can convert any video file to a format that fits iPod/iPhone, or even iPad/Apple TV, here's how:
Select the video item(s) you wish to make a compressed version for, and click ADVANCED on the menu bar. Then select "Create iPod/iPhone Version" or "Create iPad/Apple TV Version" depending on what you are syncing too. If these options are greyed out, it means it is not necessary to do this as those devices already can support the file as is. iTunes will then convert, and presto, you have a copy which will go onto your device!

  • Podcasts No Longer Sync to iPod

    Greetings!
I've several video podcasts I'm subscribed to that no longer sync to the iPod no matter what I do. It seems to have started at the last OS update, but I'm not sure. I can drag and drop the things onto the iPod in iTunes and the sync settings are to sync the latest 5 of all podcasts, but they still won't go to the iPod.
    Anyone else run into this?

Since I got the last update of itunes, my 3rd gen will sync new pieces of music but it won't sync a new playlist I created and it has "lost" one I had before. Any ideas why and what I can do to cure the problem?

if you have done restores then possibly it is a firmware issue... i would take it to the apple store if you can to get it looked at...

  • Can't sync my podcast smart playlist(s) to my ipod

I created a smart playlist to hold my podcasts, which would sync to my ipod when I was using the previous version of itunes, but after installing itunes 9 I can no longer get that playlist to sync to my ipod. I have tried both unplugging and replugging back in my ipod as well as restore factory settings and reloading everything back onto the ipod, still no luck. Does anyone know how I can solve this or if there will be a patch for itunes 9 to resolve this as well as some of the problems experienced with syncing with devices like the apple tv.

Check out this article: http://www.gotknowhow.com/articles/how-to-get-podcast-playlists-to-sync-in-itune s-9.aspx
I was in the same boat and 20 minutes on the phone with an Apple Product Specialist and we figured it out.
Apple changed the sync behavior of iTunes, because what we all have been doing was a workaround for an old bug we didn't recognize as such. We abandoned syncing podcasts using the Podcasts tab because it didn't give us the control that Smart Playlists gave us. We discovered that iTunes would sync our podcast playlists under the music tab.
That was fixed, though I wish it had been covered during the iTunes demo in the Keynote.
Use the Music tab to sync songs and other files you find in your Music library. Use the Podcasts tab to sync podcast episodes you find in your Podcasts library. Both tabs have sections listing all of your playlists. On the Podcasts tab, you may have to scroll to the bottom.
Next, Turn OFF the "Automatically include" option. This is simple syncing. If you want more control, turn this off and select the Smart Playlists you've defined using the bottom section.
I found that all of the playlists I used to sync were still selected in this lower section. As soon as I turned of the "Automatically include" option, everything was back to normal.
FYI, I love having the "Automatically fill free space with songs" option on the music tab. Now as I listen to podcasts and they are removed from the Smart Playlists, I get more music and no wasted space on my device.

  • Podcast smart playlists no longer syncing to iPod nano?

I've been a long-time iPod podcast listener, despite the obvious intent to push this product into oblivion. I am no longer seeing smart podcast playlists on my iPod. This is a HUGE bummer to me, as I listen to podcasts while I run. And I hate running with my iPhone.
Anyone else not seeing smart podcast playlists syncing to their iPod anymore?

Here is the solution: After five hours of endless error messages and incomplete re-syncs, it all boiled down to this: Restore the iPod Touch via iTunes. Everything was first erased from the iPod but then everything- contents (photos, music and settings) were restored from iTunes perfectly. Finally now MobileMe is also on all my Apple products - including the heretofore frustrating iPod.
Hope someone can save themselves a lot of aggravation by trying this fix should the updates prove to be less the "seamless"!
    Cheers!

  • Although it is possible to insert podcasts into a playlist on the Mac, these are not in the playlist on the iPod after SYNC

    Sambino,
You should be fine. Just make sure that you download and install the P2 drivers for your PB. Also, if possible transfer directly to your external. P2 cards can eat up a lot of space very quickly and you don't want to overburden your system drive.

  • How do i sync my ipod to my new computer it tells me if i sync it will delete the songs and load playlist from computer what has no songs.

How do I sync my song from my ipod nano to my new computer?

I found this post from a long time ago:
iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
