Saving Power on Linux Laptops/Desktops with Intel

Hi,
I have read a german news article on heise.de (http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/96314). It's about saving power on Linux systems using Intel cpu/chipsets.
The corresponding website is here (http://www.lesswatts.org/), it's from the former powertop.org people, but have much more general information than the old website (which still exists, because powertop is a tool for finding programs which have too much cpu calls).
There are interesting topics for laptop and desktop users there. So have fun while you are reading it.

  • Pc laptops Compatible with Intel Wireless Display (WiDi)

I am perplexed and am in need of information/understanding/a reality check.
I recently bought a Lenovo Z570 laptop that was explicitly advertised as supporting Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). I also bought a Belkin Screencast adaptor.
The computer arrived and there was the WiDi shortcut on the desktop. I plugged the Screencast adaptor to my tv through an HDMI cable and set the tv to the correct channel for the input. Great so far!
Per Intel's list of updates (http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wtech/iwd/sb/CS-033375.htm), I went through and updated the wireless driver and then the Graphics driver. When I tried to update the Intel Wireless Display software, the process was aborted. And my screencast said that the monitor display could not be sent to tv.
After a lot of searching, I realized that my i5-2450M processor does not appear on Intel's list of compatible processors. System requirements can be found at http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wtech/iwd/sb/CS-031059.htm which says that the processor must be:
    ONE of the following:
    Intel® Core™ i7: 640M; 660LM; 640LM; 620LM; 620M; 610E; 690UM; 680UM; 660UM; 640UM; 620UM; 660UE; 2710QE; 2820QM; 2720QM; 2635QM; 2630QM; 2657M; 2649M; 2629M; 2620M; 2617M; 2540M; 2520M; 2510E; 2640LM; 2620LM; 2630UM; 2610UM; 2530UM; 2920XM
    Intel® Core™ i5: 580M; 560M; 540M; 520M; 480M; 460M; 450M; 430M; 580UM; 560UM; 540UM; 520UM; 470UM; 430UM; 2540M; 2520M; 2410M; 2537M
    Intel® Core™ i3: 390M; 380M; 370M; 350M; 330M; 330E; 2310M
Strange, but at that point I was just angry that the store and/or Lenovo had made a whopping mistake. After all, the WiDi shortcut and program was on my laptop; there has to be a reason for that, right?
After a lot of searching, I haven't come up with any answers, only more questions. Here on Best Buy, I searched for pc laptops that support WiDi. A list of 36 or 37 machines came up as qualifying. However, in going through them one by one, only a handful have processors that appear on Intel's list for the System Requirements.
I am very confused. Is Intel's list out of date? But if that's so, why didn't my attempt to update and use the software work? Are bestbuy and costco and multiple laptop makers mistaken when they say a machine is capable of supporting Wireless Display? What the heck is going on? Can anyone help me figure this out?
The Lenovo is on it's way back, but I need a new laptop as my old one is literally falling apart. A new one with WiDi would be extremely useful for a disabled family member. I'm also stuck with the Screencast I bought now too. Beyond all that, I'm really curious what is going on. Am I just stupid or befuddled or . . .is there something I'm missing? Any help would be so, so appreciated. Thank you.

The notebook does fully support WiDi but for some unknown reason, yours simply did not work. The CPU specs from Intel list WiDi as a capability of the CPU and the notebook has the appropriate hardware. I couldn't say why it didn't work but Lenovo does not advertise WiDi as a function of that model on their website so something is obviously off.

  • Advice re LR2, laptop & desktop, with photos on ext drive

Please critique this setup.  I've been considering this b/c I have had images stored to both computers but would prefer that one storage drive be known to contain all of my work; as it is, I can't recall if certain photos are on one or the other computer and don't want to mirror the collections on two computers.
I have LR2 on a MBP & iMac and have some photos already imported to their respective drives but have been considering to change my arrangement such that all photos are imported to one external drive which would be shared between the two computers (small portable drive).  I also have a larger external drive always attached to the imac to be used as a backup copy location.
My idea was to have one, master repository of all my photos (the small port. drive) but work on them either on the MBP or iMac depending if I am home or not.  My understanding is that LR can allow you to work on the images (a preview really) even though the drive containing the images isn't attached but then 'apply' the changes when the drive is next connected.
Does this sound reasonable or not?  Please recommend variations, improvements etc or point me to other posts with similar arrangements.
    thanks

Your proposal will work just fine. I use a Windows desktop and a Mac laptop and much the same set up as you. If you propose on using the images off line and also want the speed benefits of having the actual catlog and preview files on an internal drive, then it does mean maintaining two catalogs. One on the desktop and one on the laptop, both linked to the images on the external drive. In order to keep the two catalogs in sync in relation to the development settings you need to connect the external drive and write the data to file and then sync this when connecting to the other computer...which is how I do it usually. This means that each catalog can have different collections but the same process settings for all the files. If you use smart collections (as I do) these can be exported and then loaded so these remain in sync, but for ordinary collections you have to create these on both catalogs.
Alternatively you can have a single catalog on the external drive. This can slow things down a bit and means you must always have the external drive connected.
You can also export as catlog to the external drive from the desktop.

    Single Core celeron at 2.2ghz?
Not even 3GB of ram is going to save you from this situation with the way the Intel HD graphics card is stealing your memory.
The first thing I would do if you have the time for it is get a nice drink and set it next to your computer, you are going to need it.
And remove all the try me and buy me stuff. Its going to take you at least 20 to 25 minutes to do.
After this, your computer should be speedier.
Some more things to consider. If you run MSCONFIG you can control on your computer the things that load up in the system tray. Be only sure to mess with the Start Up Try and not the other options.
A through explanation of how to use MSCONFIG can be seen on this page: http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/index.html

  • G5 tower, dual 1.8 power pc (can I replace with "INTEL" processors)

Is it possible or worth it to replace my G5 towers "POWER PC" processor with new "INTEL" processor ???

Hi Tellastrat, and a warm welcome to the forums!
AS Niel says no, you'd need all the other parts including Logic Board, RAM, Power Supply, Graphics Card, & een a new case, or a lot of machining on the G5's case to fit everything... they only look similar outside... sorry.

    Hi:
Only if you replace the entire motherboard, which would cost as much as buying a new notebook with the graphics solution you want.

  • Lowering fan speed on laptop with Intel chipset

I have a laptop running with Intel i7-2630QM. I know my laptop had worse-than-expected battery life, but I never realized how bad until I installed powertop. Turns out I'm idling at 29W(!). This is even after enabling pcie_aspm=force and the related boot arguments that supposedly improve battery life in Intel laptops.
I think a big part of the problem is my fan, as my laptop has always been particularly noisy. However, I can't figure out which chipset I should be modifying in sensors.conf.
    Output of sensors:
    acpitz-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +57.0°C (crit = +120.0°C)
    temp2: +55.0°C (crit = +127.0°C)
    radeon-pci-0100
    Adapter: PCI adapter
    temp1: +55.0°C
    coretemp-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Physical id 0: +58.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
    Core 0: +53.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
    Core 1: +52.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
    Core 2: +55.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
    Core 3: +54.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Compared with my friends' laptops, I expected to see a line that corresponds to my chipset, but I don't - what line(s) should I expect to modify?

Okay, I've half-solved the issue - I turned off the radeon card, and my idle temperature dropped by about 10 degrees. I'm idling at about 18 W now, so I get about an extra hour of battery life (~3 hours). That said, since I could get about 5 in Windows on this computer, I think there's still some room for improvement, especially since the fan is still a bit noisy. (I can't measure it exactly, but to my ear, it sounds like it's running too high given my low temperature of ~45 degrees).
I'm assuming the fan is the number one power draw at this point, so is there any other way that I can get it down without pwm?

  • Dual monitor for M Series ThinkCentre with Intel hd graphics + i5 650 processor?

I have a  M Series (My guess it is M90) ThinkCentre desktop with Intel hd graphics + i5 650 processor (detailed info in pictures below), one vga port on the central unit, I would like to upgrade dual monitors to extend desk.
I checked online, someone said a Intel hd graphics doesn't support dual monitor, but some said yes. My questions are:
1, could I upgrade to dual monitors with the Intel hd Graphics+i5 650 processor instead of upgrading a ATI video card?
2, if 1 is yes, can I attach a vga 15-pin splitter to connect dual monitors? Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That model does support 2 monitors, the 2nd using the DisplayPort (DP.)   Not many monitors support DP as yet, if needed, a DP to DVI, HDMI or VGA can be bought.   Lenovo sells them, or I also recommend an AMD approved adapter :
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/recommended/eyefinity-adapters
you need a single-link (if DVI), passive adapter.   And not mini-DP.
Search on "M90, monitor" in the search engine above right for more information.

  • Capture laptop desktop

Is there a way to hook up a laptop to my G5 Mac Pro and capture what i see on the laptop desktop with final cut capture? I don't want to pay for any screen capture programs and the free ones don't look correct with the frame rates on playback. There's a mini-fire hookup with the laptop.
Is there a specific capture preset that i can create to make this work?

if its a one time thing, try and download the trial version of Ambrosia's Snap Pro Z.
i used it to record the onscreen playing of our ultrasound dvd. worked perfectly my use.

Greetings from a Photoshop Newbie. I need a computer, preferably a Mac laptop, with some serious processing power. I take photos with a Pentax 645Z; files are 50MB raw. I upload from Adobe Bridge and manipulate the photo, sometimes turning them into files in excess of 250MB. I cannot resize as the large files are needed for enlargements. Have all sorts of problems trying to manipulate, add effects and saving most large files. I need some serious processing power. Can anyone suggest what Mac i should purchase? I thank you in advance for your help :-)

It sounds as if you're having some system-related problems now, unrelated to processing power as such. In particular, a buggy video driver can cause everything to slow to a crawl.
Medium format files are big, true, but not so big as to cause significant slowdowns on a normally functioning and reasonably current computer. A laptop will always be slower than a well-equipped desktop system, though. Mac vs PC plays no part in this, performance is unrelated to platform.
Bottlenecks are different in ACR and Photoshop, so that should give you a clue. ACR is computing-intensive and mostly limited by CPU speed. Photoshop, however, is mostly bandwidth-intensive and mainly limited by memory and disk throughput. It's also sensitive to GPU issues.

  • Photosmart D7160 connected to desktop with Windows XP, issues with new laptop & network printing

We have a Photosmart D7160 connected to our desktop that runs Windows XP. I just got a new Acer laptop that runs Windows 7 (64bit). We set up a network to connect to the internet and so I can access documents that had been made on the desktop. I have not had issues using the printer off the desktop with any programs. I installed a creative program to create flyers, cards, etc onto the laptop. Same one as on the desktop. When trying to print off the laptop, I can not access the whole options on the printer. I forget the name of the options I want (maybe called printing preferences) but I would like to choose wether I am using the photo tray or presentation printing or economy printing, etc. I can only choose print.  That is not  good for printing cards, etc. I had made a recipe care template with that program and wanted to print one out.
What have I not done in setting up my laptop? I tried the to "add a printer" on a network and that did not fix my issue. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

    Hi Bayratlj
Dunno if you've sorted your problem out, but I had exactly the same problem with a HP Photosmart 3100. I found some advice on http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6201674 regarding the firewall on the Mac and yes that is the problem. But as you'll see with my last post in that topic I cant figure out how to keep my firewall on AND have printer sharing. Just allowing printer sharing in the firewall settings is no help.
    Cheers

  • If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?

I have several friends and family who are looking for a central place to access information from ( Pictures, home movies etc ).  So I am considering setting up an OSX Lion Server.  There are some other things I can use it for as well.
    Here is my question:
If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?  Or would I have to install the Admin software on each?  Do they intend it to be used strictly as one admin to access many clients?
I always could set up a network drive so they can log in and just see the folders they have created with space on the server I provide them.  But I want them to be able to log an and actually use it as a Remote Desktop.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Dave,
Thanks for the feedback.  I understand that ARD is meant for Remote Administration, but I was not sure if it could be used for my purpose as well.  The reason I was looking to do it this was was because I read several articles online about security and performance issues with setting up VNC and activating screen sharing.  Unless I am misunderstood.
As far as people's activities on the server, mostly it is going to be used as a place for them to store their media.  I will only allow own person ( Who I trust and I know wont botch the server ), to run applications.  Everyone else will be restricted to uploading and downloading content to their designated account on the server as well as a community share on the server.
    I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Eric
