Saving Small Clips & Memory

Great place for help...here goes again!
I am going through 15 years of tapes and making a backup DVD of each one for archive. Fine and dandy...and quite fun.
I am trying to save various 1-10 minute clips from these 50 tapes (now in iMovie ) to pull together something for grandmas.
So, when I save a 1 min clip (and sending to a new project that I'm building up), I guess the computer (in the new project) is saving the entire clip/segment it came from--not just the 1-2 minutes I had edited. In some cases, this is 1 hour (PS: When I import tape from older analog 8mm format it does not make automatic chapters....I could import 60 minutes with some 20 scenes, it adds it to iMovie as one 60 min clip...I have to then cut and splice and add chaptesr later).
So.....if I have a one hour iMovie, and wish to export one 2 min clip to another project, and takes a ton of memory, and my new proj. is approaching 60 GIG.
I REALIZE I could save the new clips in quick time. But is there a way to save these smaller clips in the highest of quality and export them to the newer project I am building up?

Select the clip in iMovie and Share it to a Full Quality movie. In the Share dialog, turn on the checkbox "Export selected clips only". That exports only the clip, not its entire source file.
Later, import that movie to your grandmas project.
Theoretically, you can export a single clip to tape that way too. Sometimes the export fails to stop at the selected clip, so you have to stop it manually.
That's a good way to use the method Bengt suggested which may be easiest, and it saves disk space. Start a new grandmas tape, and export all the grandmas clips to that tape as you encounter them. Later, import the grandmas tape to a new grandmas project.

  • Saving Individual Clips in Premiere Elements 11

    Hi all -
In Adobe Premiere Elements 11, after cutting a large video clip into many smaller clips and then renaming them, how do you go about saving each individual clip, so I can easily edit them?  I feel like I've looked everywhere and can't seem to figure it out.
    Thanks!!
    Jerry

My first impression is cannot do. But, let me think about this.
    Two major tasks...
    a. Even if we could get the "grouped" video/audio into Project Assets with a copy/paste insert with ClipMate
then the next challenge would be
    b. How do we get the Preview Window with the Set In and Set Out points to deal with a grouped rather than linked video audio. It will not do that when the grouped video and audio are on the Timeline....we could do non Preview Window trimming at the Timeline level
Think it worthwhile to download ClipMate to see how far we would get for this purpose of
    a. generating segments of grouped video and audio?
    b. pasting them into Project Assets where they would function as source media in or out of folders there?
I suspect this is going to go the old fashion way of exporting the segments to a file saved to the computer hard drive and then bringing those segments back into a grand project for the final export..
ClipMate, I believe, is a Windows only program. What computer operating system are you running your Premiere Elements 11 on?
    More later.

  • Breaking a quicktime movie into several smaller clips?

    Hi,
I want to edit my wedding movie but Imovie 3 says it is too large. I have it saved as a QT.div (approx 55 minutes) file but how can I edit it into several smaller clips to import to imovie?

Apple of course wants you to purchase QuickTime Pro to activate the editing features in QuickTime Player.
But to do it for free, try MPEG Streamclip. http://www.squared5.com/ .div isn't listed among the formats, but the list has an ellipsis at the end, so you never know.
The list they give on their site is "MPEG, VOB, PS, M2P, MOD, VRO, DAT, MOV, DV, AVI, MP4, TS, M2T, MMV, REC, VID, AVR, M2V, M1V, MPV, AIFF, M1A, MP2, MPA, AC3, ... "

  • CS 4 Cut one long clip in to smaller clips

How would I cut one long clip in to many smaller clips and then put those clips back in to the bin for later
I have a few long clips but only want peices of them

Bill gave me advice on this about 6 months ago, as I had the same question with CS3...I imagine in this instance CS4 is the same.
    Here's what he said:
    1) leave extra room on the in out points when the big clip is in the source monitor and you are deciding on the subciip length...so if you have to adjust later you have "handles" to expand a little bit ...
    2) if you dont have to make subclips "dont" ...just drag from source monitor to timeline...using the in out points...as it makes no real difference to the original video file...its just code in the program...  however, in my case I wanted to the subclips due to learning about "scripted" stuff and 3 cameras...
Then I discovered (tutorial)  that by choosing in out points in the source monitor and dragging that straight to the project panel it automatically creates the subclip and all you have to do is "name" it...or leave default timecode name...saved a lot of time cause I was using the mouse to choose "create subclip" etc  before I learned about that shortcut

  • In making a "highlights" movie, using clips from different imported iMovie events, can I delete the larger iMovie event file from the Events browser and still work w the smaller clips in the Projects browser w/o having the larger files still loaded?

I have sucessfully imported 150 Sony digital 8mm movies (each one hour in length) into iMovie as 150 iMovie events. I have since successfully converted them from their original 13 Gb (.dv) file to an exported smaller 1.3 Gb (.4mv "large file") movie that I am happy with, using the iMovie projects browser. So now I have 150 " .4mv" movies on my internal HD as well as about half of my original raw data " .dv " movies on my internal hard drive.
Due to their large size (over 2 Tb), I do not have all the larger raw data (.dv) files on my 2Tb internal drive, just about half of them. What I want to do now is to create a new project in the Projects browser for each of my kids, and reload, starting with Tape #1, each of these larger files and do a highlights movie for each of my kids, wherein I pick out smaller clips from each 1 hour .dv iMovie event and paste them into the appropriate kid's Highlights project in the Projects browser.
Here's my question: If I load the first 5 large files back onto my internal HD, and paste in various shorter clips into each of my kids' Highlights project, and then if I delete those first 5 large files (they are backed up on 2 other 3Tb external HDs), can I keep doing this (reloading the next 5 large .dv files to work with), and ultimately take each of my kid's Highlights project and export as a .4mv movie EVEN THOUGH the earlier large .dv files are no longer on my internal HD, OR does my iMac need to have all these larger files loaded on my internal HD for me to eventually export each of my kid's Highlights project to a .4mv movie?
I have a 2011 era 27" iMac desktop w 2Tb HD internal and 250 Gb flash drive, and Lion OSX and iMovie 11.

Thanks. I tested it out and you were correct. I loaded 2 .dv movies from my external HD back onto my internal HD, and got them re-imported into iMovie, took a few short clips from each of the 2 iMovie events and pasted them into a new project in the Project Browser. Then I deleted these 2  "source clips" from my internal HD, closed iMovie and then re-opened it and found that iMovie would NOT export the smaller clips for a "highlights" .4mv movie without the "source clips" being available.
I read your link on Quicktime. It talks about mostly trimming, which is what I did with each iMovie event before I took each one as a project to export as a smaller .4mv file. But if I use Quicktime (do I need QT Pro or basic), what advantage is it to me to use QT over iMovie (I must admit I am a novice at iMovie and have never used QT or QT Pro as a tool)? Will it then convert any edits I make to a .m4v movie or do I need iMovie to do that?
Does QT allow trimming multiple segments out of a movie during one edit session, or can you only do 1 at a time? By that I mean that, for example, when I use Sonys Picture Motion Browser for my .mts movies, you can only set one Start and one End point for each edit/trim you do: it does not allow you to set multiple Start Stop points like iMovie allows in its Event or Project browser. You can only do one "trim" at a time, save it and then reopen to do another trim. not very useful.

  • IMovie HD 6.0.3: After making 10 movies where I clipped portions from a larger clip (and exported the smaller clips), suddenly iMovie clips are much shorter after I export them.

    Hi there,
I am using iMovie HD 6.0.3 on an older MacBookPro (OS X, 10.4.11).
I took an AVI video and imported that into iMovie HD.
I then created smaller clips out of that - like editing a 20 minute video into small, 30 second clips.
I made about 10 of these smaller clips, exported them using "expert settings," and burned the results to DVD. These all worked fine.
Suddenly, the final product that I export is much shorter than the clip I created. For example, I'll create a 30 second smaller clip from the original. When I review this 30 second clip, it is what I wanted.
When I export this 30 second clip, it makes a QuickTime movie that is only 23 seconds. (The first 10 I made did not do this).
I tried extending my clip by 7 seconds, hoping to end up with a 30 second clip after exporting. The result was even shorter - like 15 seconds.
I have checked disk space - it has at least 500 GB free space. I have tried exporting the clip to both my laptop and to an external hard drive. The results are the same.
I just tried using the "crop" feature to see if my end product was better - but it was the same.
Does anyone know what is going on? Why did this start after making 10 successful exports? What can I do to get it working right again, as I have 3 more clips to make and am running up against a deadline.
    Thanks so much!
    Heidi

Since I can't edit this post... (Why?) I'd add: fast forwarding and fast reverse (shift key and arrow left or right) the HA files is also not smooth. They play alright. I'm surprised iMovie can't handle them either. I didn't have a problem with the earlier camcorder's HA files... (All were converted MTS files using Movie Converter.)

FCP 7.0.3, Canon XF100, saved some clips to a portable hard drive and now they won't import?  Tried moving them back to the CompactFlash but still won't import?  iMac, 10.6.8

Well, for FCP to see this file structure and recognize it, you need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin...
    http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
    >I don't have the original clips on the card.
Meaning that they didn't back up the full card structure?  Lordy...very few shooters do this and it is maddening.  If you don't have the full card structure, even with the plugin, FCP cannot log and transfer.
As for ClipWrap2...that should work.  Do you have the right files?

It gave me plenty of hits, but be a little careful. I would suggest using the free trial of one of the paid products. As I have never used one, I cnnot recommand any.
And remeber: every time you write something on that flash drive, you risk overwriting your lost file, thus decreasing your chances of recovering it.

  • How to only use a small clip of a song in imovie

how do I only use a small clip of a song in imovie?

there's two sorts of applying audio to an iMovie Project:
    • as general 'background'
    • or as 'clip'
    have a look here:
I dragged the audio ONTO some existing video-clip in my Project => the new audio appears as a green bar - which indicates an audio-clip. Such an audio-clip you can shorten, cut, move, stack, copy/paste as any other clip in iMovie ...

Could it be because the SIM card got damaged while I cut it to fit the IPhone?
Very likely. Hard to believe the carrier in Mexico doesn't have a micro-SIM card available.
Or somehow the Chinese carrier found out and locked it?
    No, which is not possible.
What can I do? Get a new SIM and see if it works again?
Get a micro-SIM from the carrier in Mexico that you don't have to manually cut down. If that carrier doesn't provide one, switch to another carrier that is not so low-budget.

  • Mashing small clips together to make one large one!?

i figured ou thow to do this once, but now i cant remember.
i need to mesh a bunch of small clips together to make a large one so i can do a longer transition.

.. if You had some short clips and applyed a text on them.
And the text just using some spaces (no letters) then it would merge the
    clips together...
never tried (.. never needed.. ), but a clever one!!

I have videos saved on my memory stick and I-photo however i want to import them into I-movie how do i convert them?

    Hi,
If you have the newest version of iPhoto and iMovie, you can access your iPhoto videos in iMovie directly.
On your iMovie, after creating a new project, on the bottom left hand corner, expand your Hard Drive (Macintosh HD), and then click on "iPhoto Videos."
You can use those clicps by dragging them right into your project on the upper left hand corner and use them.
However, if the videos you took on your camera are not supported by iPhoto, then you'll need some third-party software to help you convert them.

  • I want to read the settings (time/div,Volt/div,delay,etc...)from a waveform that is saved into a memory register of a FLUKE PM3394A Combiscope.

    Dear all,
I am writing a labview application for a Fluke PM3394A Combiscope. I want to read the settings (time/div,Volt/div,delay,etc...)from a waveform that is saved into a memory register. Can somebody help me on this? The Labview driver library I found on NI.com doesn't support this.
    Greetings
    Davy

Unless you've used some sort of "auto-setup" for the scope, all of the settings are what your program commands the scope to use. Once you've acquired a waveform, typically all that is contained is the raw data. If you need the settings later in the program, you'll have to save them by putting them into a shift register/local variable/plain old wire. If you do use an "auto-setup" (I don't remember if the scope has this feature) and the driver has no query functions, then you'll probably have to write your own. These are usually pretty simple to do and are usually similar to the settings commands with the addition of a "?" at the end. For example, if the command to set coupling of channel 1 is ":INP 1:COU AC", then to query it the command might be "INP 1:COU?"
and you would do a read and get "AC". The instrument programming manual should explain all of the command/query syntax.

  • How To Automatically Split A Large Clip Into Smaller Clips

I captured several one-hour tapes with an older version of Windows Movie Maker.
    They are AVI files.
I'd like to work with the footage when I purchase Premiere Pro CS5.5 or CS6.
Each tape is composed of several starts and stops of the record button, so lots of individual clips inside of the hour-long captured footage.
In Premiere Pro CS 5.5, is there a way to automatically split a large clip into smaller clips at the points where I started and stopped the camera?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Flyingfish,
    I cannot tell you that.
Historically, with "consumer" CODEC's, PrE often gets native support, before PrPro.
However, with "professional" CODEC's, such as RED, PrPro has those, but PrE will likely never get them. There are some pro CODEC's, that PrPro does have, that PrE is missing, but I do not have a list.
Good luck, and wish that I had more info for you.

    Hi Ladies, and Gents
This is webtool kit problem if you have a rather large library in my case a little over 250GB and you play music as you work Itunes goes out and tries use the Genious recomandations this is a great feature but the problem is after awile all of those requests and threads leaves Itunes in a less than stable state.
If you are running in Jukebox mode ie just listening to music hide the Geinus Recomandations it should improve your listening experince under Windows 7 64bit.
Good Luck to everyone I hope this helps ot.
