Saving Smart Collections

Hello all,
I've recently upgraded from CS4 to CS6, when I uninstalled my cs4 package I realsed I'd just lost all my smart collections in Bridge. However a colleuge of mine has these same smart collections set up in his Bridge CS6, so I was wondering if theres any way of exporting or saving the samrt collections so I can import them to my bridge? Or any saved preference cache that I can copy?
It'll take a couple of hours to set up all the collections so any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Collections are just a bunch of address to your photos.  So no, you can not transfer them.  Now smart collections are a little better, but they are still just address locations for the photos, and not the photos themselves.
You can go into the location of your CS4 and copy the collection and paste into CS6 and see if it works.  That location is C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS4.  Note that appdata is a hidden file.

  • Cannot any longer save new smart collections

Hi, after reinstalling Photoshop CS6 I cannot any longer save smart collections in Bridge. Always I want to create a smart collection by entering criteria, but when I click on SAVE, it is not saved. After some time of waiting, I always have to cancel, to close the pop-up window that should allow me to save the new smart collection. In my old installation (before I had to install a new hard disk), setting up and saving smart collections never was a problem.
ALL updates of CS6 have been installed. And I am under WINDOWS 7. Version of CS6 is: 13.01 x64
Before, I used a regular hard disk for the system, now I have a SSD, plus several hard disks for data storage.
Can anybody help me with advice what the problem is?
    That whould be great. Thanx,
    Jochen

Lightroom is not saving metadata. I have done several things to save and I still get the tag that states is is not saved. I have also created 2 smart collections. One showing metadata has been changed and one showing metadata is not up to date. No matter what I do it is not showing in LR that it is saved. I spent 2 days with Seth Resnick trying to correct this and we re created my catalog. It was ok, until I imported new images and same problem. Now I have a new problem, when I bring image to PS it saves it but does not bring back to LR. Am I the only one out there who has this problem?

  • When editing an image in ps from a lr 4.2 smart collections image not shown back in smart collection

    Hi all,
I have noticed at LR 4.2, that if you edit an image of a smart collection using PS (edit in PS function threw LR) and then save, the image is not appearing in the specific smart collection. Instead  image appears in the parent folder from where the smart collections retrieves images.
Has anyone notice that as well??
Forgot to mention that my parent folder with files is a collection created with virtual copies of seleveted files. If i edit in Photoshop directly threw this virtual copies collection then the files appears in smart collections as well. but if i edit in PS directly from smart collections then files dont appear into smart collections neither at the virtual copies collection!!

"obviously you use virtual copies when creating those collections" - why? It seems to me that this just increases the number of images in your Library for no benefit, unless you want to independently edit  the two image versions, one inside the Event collection and one outside the collection. If you ever wanted to see an unedited version of a particular image, LR retains the history (and before/after view) needed to show that, within the single thumbnail.
It is not necessary to make a Smart Collection in order to show only picked images from a particular event. You can use a Filter to show just the picked images and hide the rest. That means you can work inside the collection, and that means that when you edit an image to PS, the new LR version WILL inherit the collection membership as well as the Pick status, and therefore will immediately show next to the image it is based on.
I think this is going to be simpler and easier - BTW you don't have to go back to Library Grid view in order to apply filters, only in order to configure them in the first place. By saving Filter presets with a name, you can then select between these directly [from the menu at the right end of the Filmstrip] while you work, even in Develop- for example, "no filter", "picked", "unpicked", "rated two or more", whatever you want. Also you can switch between the recently-viewed collections and folders [from a menu when you click on the image details text toward the left end of the Filmstrip], to change the underlying content of the Filmstrip, to which you are applying these filters.
By "using selection criteria other than membership in a manual collection", I just meant: a special keyword, or a particular folder, or some combination of such things. But if you prefer to put images into a Collection, you can just use that directly and IMO you don't need the SC.
I personally like to have some kind of sufficiently identifying keywords on the image anyway, so that Exported copies will also show this information automatically... since an exported image will not reveal what collection its master image belonged to, that classification alone is not enough IMO.

  • Reading Advanced Metadata in Smart Collections, not working in Bridge CS6

In Bridge CS5 you could make an Smart collection that were looking for: All metadata > contains > "here we add a value from a metadata only visible from the Advanced tab in File info"
But this nolonger works in CS6.
Although I can go to File info and see the metadata value that are visible from Advanced. But the option All metadata, clearly doesn't support the advanced metadata in the file in CS6.
Could this be a bug in CS6?

If any one like to try this yourself and get same or other result, please let me know!
Otherwise this must be a bug to report to Adobe.
I don't have CS5 installed anymore but CS6 is still present while I use Bridge CC for my daily workflow (MacPro MacOSX 10.8.5).
I first copied 4 DNG files from my main folder to a subfolder. Those files I added a name to the IPTC extension persons name and saved.
Checked and this name shows in the IPTC extension persons name field in Metadata panel as well as in Advanced Tab in File Info IPTC Extended Properties / IPTC4xmpExt:PersonInImage(Bag container).
I closed the subfolder and used the smart collection icon to bring up the Find window.
I then selected All metadata and filled in the persons name, had subfolders and non indexed already included and put the source field to the main DNG folder.
The result was almost instant with the 4 files showing.
I then quitted Bridge CC and started Bridge CS6
Since I had not used this for a while and my main folder contained 4500 DNG I set the cache quality icon to embedded only. Selected the same folder and followed the same procedure as in CC.
Naturally it took a bit longer because the files needed to be indexed first, yet after this the result was still the same, the 4 DNG files with the persons name showed in the smart collection.
So on my behalf I can't reproduce your problem and for me it is not a bug also I'm afraid.

  • Can't create Smart Collection, Save-Button doesn't work

i have the Problem  that i can't create Smart Collection, the Save-Button doesn't work, the Smart-Collection Window stays open and nothing happens when i click the "save" button!
i use CC with a new installed W8 and all is up-to-date.
Its a strange thing. Please Help me.

Just to clarify, Photoshop CC has not been released yet.  It will come out on June 17.
What you have now is Photoshop 13.x as per the subscription model (»Abo«) and it's called Photoshop CS6.  When Photoshop 14.x is released on June 17, then it will be called "CC".
It's not clear—at least to me—which images, if any, you have selected in Bridge when you hit the »Speichern« (Save) button.
Remember that a Collection is nothing more than a saved search, i.e. a saved collection of selected search results (hits).
Could you elaborate on what it is you want to save as a collection?

  • Bridge Smart Collection Error

I am running Bridge on a Mac and am having an issue in creating smart collections. My image files keyworded in metadata. When I attempt to create a Smart Collection by searching in a folder by the keyword (for example) tree, the smart collection does not find all the images with the keyword tree. I am including all subfolders and non indexed files in the search. Any help would be appreciated.

I am having the same issue with the Find (Cmd+F) function.
Do you mean the find function in Bridge or using Finder?
To search for files with a certain keyword you best use the find command in Bridge. Besides having included subfolders and non indexed file make sure your source is the main folder where all the subfolders and files you are looking for are saved.
Also check the criteria settings.  For keywords best choose the keywords in the first field and 'contains ' in the second field, use the plus sign to add an other keyword to the list if you want to search for multiple keywords
Under results set Match to if any criteria are met. If you have set this to if all criteria are met it only shows the files containing all the searched keywords which also can narrow the search down.
And check if you have read and write permission for the disk the files are on.

  • Smart Collection Problem - LR 5.6

I have a smart collection for files where metadata has been changed. This helps me ensure that the changes can be saved to files on disk.
Recently I have noticed that this collection has started showing large numbers of files (800+), where the data needs to be saved to disk. If I select all of these files and then save to disk, they all disappear one by one, then when the collection is empty they all start reappearing again, until they are all back again.
I have tried optimizing my catalogue, closing and reopening, rebooting etc. The criteria for the collection is where "Metadata status has been changed". The collection works OK for new files imported, it is just that has started including a large number of false positives, which I can't get rid of.
Lightroom 5.6 on Windows 7 x64. Catalogue has 32,304 entries.
    Any suggestions anybody?
    Ian

    Thanks for the suggestion.
Do you mean writing the data to XMP sidecar files? I would love to have an option to automatically write my metadata to my DNG file, but would prefer to avoid sidecar files if at all possible, but if I can't fix the problem it is something I might have to consider.

  • Smart collection drop down does not include keywords

I must have gotten this right once, because I have a smart collection whose only condition is a keyword, which is at the top of the drop down for that collection.  Likewise there is a default smart collection that LR must have created, which is called "without keywords" and whose one condition is that keywords are empty.  However,  every time I try to create a new smart collection, the criteria drop down starts with rating, followed by pick flag, label color, label text, down to the final criteria, "any searchable text" which I understand to be different from keywords, because there is a criteria called keywords.  The same is true of attempts to edit existing smart collections.  Where did my criteria by keywords go?

That allows you to share the saved criteria to a different catalog or to a catalog on another machine.

  • Sorting compressed from uncompressed PSD/PSB files in Bridge/smart collections?

Is there any info (metadata or something) one could use to sort uncompressed from compressed PSD/PSB files in Bridge?
Something that could be used in filters for smart collections would be nice.
    Ty in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply, CP
FYI, the file is a photographic panorama based on several .CR2 photos taken in July, 2012 and processed in CS5's camera RAW/Photoshop.  Beyond the metadata, here are no fonts or text in the file.
    1.  I changed Maximize ...File Capability from "Never" to "Always" and the flattened file saved and loaded OK, though I can't figure why given Adobe's description of this option. "If you work with PSD and PSB files in older versions of Photoshop or applications that don’t support layers, you can add a flattened version of the image to the saved file...".  The file saved in this manner is ~8% larger and is not my preference as a routine since I've TB's of photo files.  By the way, out of thousands of .psd/.psb files, the one being discussed is the first to give me the error.
    2.  I've tried saving/reloading the file on another computer with Win XP Sp3/CS5...again with Maximize Capability OFF.  Same problem.  Turn ON Maximize Capability and it works.  As with the Win 8 machine, Bridge could neither create a thumbnail or read Metadata.
    3.  I've purged the Bridge Cache, made sure there were no old PS page files, reset PS preferences, and disabled my 2 plugins with no change in the problem.  Windows and Adobe progs are all updated.  Saving to a different HDD has no effect.
The problem occurs on 2 computers (Win XP/Win 8), two versioins of Photoshop (CS5/CS6), and "Maximize" On/Off togles the problem.  My guess it is a bug in PSD processing routines.
If I can't find a fix, will keep with Maximize ON and deal with the larger files that result...the cost of insurance, I suppose.
    Thanks again

  • Duplicate Published Smart Collection error

I have Lightroom 6.01.  The Duplicate Published Smart Collection feature does not work.  Whenever I right click on a Published Smart Collection to invoke the Duplicate... command, I get an error message each time I attempt to do this.  The error message says "An internal error has occurred.  Assertion failed."

Right - it computes filtered images on demand, instead of attempting to keep up-to-date. But, you can narrow down the search using "Keywords Contains Dogs", then use AnyFilter to refine the results (check "Visible photos only") - much faster that way.
Note: consider SpaceUrchin too - tricky to learn syntax, but allows you to refine Lr's searches by simply typing into Lr's search box, and searches can be saved as ordinary lib filters. For example, if you have SpaceUrchin installed, then typing:
    (Keywords Contain)
    Dogs | text=Dogs | stop=4
will narrow the keyword search from all those with "Dogs" to only those with "Dogs" in the first 4 characters. Save lib filter preset for next time...
    mrhoni wrote:
I would think it would only select the Smugmug Published Collection "Dogs" and not the Collection "Our Dogs" because while "Our Dogs" does end with "Dogs" it does not start with "Dogs".
You would think wrongly in this case. Lightroom divides the search target into tokens, governed by spaces, then does the same to the search term, then applies each search token to each target token, in turn.
Thus "Our Dogs" (when so tokenized) becomes
    1. Our
    2. Dogs
in the eyes of Lightroom's searcher.
Given that, "Our Dogs" does have a token that begins with "Dogs", thus it is considered a match.
PS - If it's any consolation, I don't like the way Lightroom treats spaces in metadata and search terms either. But, I realized this long ago, and converted all multi-word keywords to single-word, so the only problem I have is with non-keyword metadata, and for that I usually use SpaceUrchin, and sometimes AnyFilter.
Maybe one day I will create a plugin which replicates all metadata fields without spaces, so searching can be done the way many of us wants (using Lr native search facilities). Until then... - good luck.

  • Finding Virtual Copies in Smart Collections

Is there any way to find virtual copies in smart collections without using "copy name is not empty" ? Basically I am trying to use copy name as a version number for all images, include the base image which is the original. But this then makes it difficult to find the actual copies themselves. Any ideas?
    Thanks

I'll see whether a smart collection can work from a saved filter, which can identify the real VCs correctly.
Not sure what this means, but if you want "Is Virtual Copy" metadata available for (standard Lr native) smart collections, it is available via
    Metadata Extensions
The only caveat is that the metadata is not updated immediately, so you need to "manage" the metadata updating and/or your expectations.
Funny - I just ran into the need for this last night - I solved by making sure all virtual copy names were distinguishable from master copy names, still: because of Lightroom's text metadata processing shortcomings (e.g. space handling and "Big Mallard Ducks" bug), It really is best to have a yes/no rule.

  • Adobe Bridge CC Smart Collections are not displaying all images in the folder

I'm having an issue with Bridge CC were I setup a smart collection to monitor my new photos. The folder contains over 300 photos, but is only displaying 160. The only condition I set is to have a minium file size of 10kb, so it should bring in all files since most are over 4mb. At first I thought it was a problem with the files themselves (permissions or something) but if I open the folder in bridge it easily displays all of the images easily. Any ideas?

I'm having an issue with Bridge CC were I setup a smart collection to monitor my new photos.
You might want to describe this workflow a bit more. Do you create this from an existing folder or are you adding new photo's?
A Smart Collection does not refreshes it self automatically. You either have to use the edit icon top right of the content panel to save again or deselect and select the collection itself to let it refresh the content.

  • I would like to see a "user order" sort option for Smart Collections

I use LR to set up Collections to use for web output and typically use key wording to organize which photos will be included in any web gallery. Right now I have to make that into a regular collection so I can rearrange the collection to appear the way I want to present things. I would prefer to be able to utilize Smart Collections so any photos I want to add will be included automatically when I set up the proper keywords. New additions should be at the end of the current order and the user should be able to move that around in the presentation order as desired.

I absolutely agree. I used a similar function in Aperature all the time. It was the main reason I originally chose Aperature over LightRoom till Lightroom came out with the latest edition that included Smart Collections, and was I disappointed to find that it wasn't as powerful as Aperature's Smart Folders options.
Both programs have their strengths and their weaknesses... and this time around I think Lightroom has the advantage, but Aperature still wins on Smart Collections customization ability and power.
