Saving to SMB or AFP Server

When using the save function on some documents (not all) from pages to a network server (either SMB or AFP) I get the error: "The document (document name) could not be saved." I can hit "save as" and save it in the same directory with no issue. This "save as"'d document then cannot be saved, but can be "save as"'d yet again. Thus I end up with version 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ad infinitum... Alternatively, I can bounce back & forth: 'version 1', then 'version 2', then 'version 1' again, then 'version 2' again.
This behavior only happens when going to the network server, saving locally always works fine. I've also found that I only get the error on certain documents, a document from the template "personal photo letter" works fine, but a document from "Modern photographer Letter" exhibits this behavior. With the good templates it always works, and with the bad templates it always doesn't work. I have tried using both the default save type and the "save new documents as packages" option with no apparent difference.
This behavior also exhibits itself across multiple mac clients on our network (all running iWork '09/Pages 4.0.2 (751), and Leopard 10.5.7). The behavior was also there for iWork '09/Pages 4.0.1 (746) and previous releases although I don't know all the previous iterations. The behavior was also there for Leopard 10.5.6 and previous releases although I don't know all the previous iterations.
When the error displays in pages, I get the following 2 messages on the console.app/all messages screen:
7/23/09 3:36:05 PM Pages[8521] NSDocument called FSPathReplaceObject() and -47 was returned.
7/23/09 3:36:05 PM /Applications/iWork '09/Pages.app/Contents/MacOS/Pages[8521] Had to sleep for 200 milliseconds to clear transactions race for -110/(.TemporaryItems/folders.501/TemporaryItems/(A Document Being Saved By Pages),(null))
Anyone out there have a clue?

Hi,
I wish I could offer a solution, but I have the same problem: both Pages and Keynote 09 will not save changes to a file that has been opened from a network server.
More details: the problem only occurs with iWork 09 files. If I open a Pages 06 file in Pages 09 and make an edit, I can save the file as part of the conversion of the file to the Pages 09 format. However, the file is not savable from then on. So, the conversion process creates a saveable file, but subsequent "saves" are not possible.

  • Why saving documents on an AFP server sometimes results in damaged Pages docs?

We used to work with some AFP shares on a Mac OS X server, to open, edit and save Pages, Keynote and Numbers documents flawless.
Since the new generation of this OS X  Apps appeared with Mavericks, all goes "bonk": Many documents appear as folders after saying on the AFP share and cannot be reconstructed in any way.
Copying documents from the AFP share to the user's desktop and replacing them later after edit is a no-go, because users forget to perform this step and it's extremely inconvenient.
Is there any solution for this open/edit/save problem on remote shares?

    Thanks Peter,
we use a generic Mac OS X server running under Mavericks. Pages 09 is no alternative because our users are highly mobile and use docs via WebDAV in iOS Apps too.
What we want: opening and saving iWork docs like in earlier versions directly from the AFP share. It does work, but you never know if the doc will survive the latest edit or appear as a bunch of useless data on the share.
The download/upload is a solution that simply doesn't work in a modern workflow.

  • Problem saving a Photoshop file from an AFP server

    Hi All,
Just want to know if some of you guys are experiencing this and how you solved it.
Basically we have an AFP server and OD services. All mac clients are bound to OD and are using the OD account for logging in. Most of the user are using photoshop. However when one edits a file and wanted to save/replace it, photoshop generates an error saying its locked forcing phothsop users to do file SaveAs and rename the file. We have been doing the AFP server and editing photoshop directly through the network for almost 1 and 1/2 years but not experienced this issues until later that we added more users/employees in our network and this issue came up
    The error is
Could not save "Photoshop File.psd" because the file is locked. Use the 'Get Info' command in the finder to unlock the file.
We are able to create folders/files to where the photoshop is saving and other applications seems to save/replace files fine except for photoshop.
Has anyone encounter this and how did you solve it?

I found the solution here, http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4644850#4644850 and the steps are as follows,
In Workgroup Manager (OS X Server) select the group you want to apply the setting to, the choose Preferences.
Choose the "Details" tab and add .GlobalPreferences.plist
Clear all the settings, and add a new key called NSUmask, then choose "integer" with a value of 2
Next time your users for that group log in and they save a file it will be rw-rw-r
The default umask for Macs is 022 (rw-r--r--), this changes it to 002.  I didn't try manually changing the default umask on the individual workstations, but I assume that would work also.

  • Unreliable reading from AFP server (NAS)

Following on from some earlier problems, I've started encountering a new, and much worse, problem. After I successfully connect to the AFP share, I can look at the contents of various remote folders in Finder. But, some of the folders are just showing as empty, even though I know they aren't. I tried waiting several minutes, nothing showing up (and there doesn't seem to be any way to tell if Finder is waiting for a response or not - with other folders you may get the same result, but the files usually show up after a few seconds).
There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern to it. Certain folders show all their contents, others just appear to be empty. Also, if I try to list the contents of these folders from the command line (ls -la /Volumes/Share/Folder) then once again it works for the same ones that work in Finder, but it otherwise it just hangs. I am getting similar problems sometimes trying to unmount certain shares from the command line with diskutil: again, it just hangs.
This wasn't happening when I tried it recently (as suggested in the thread referenced at the top of this post) and the only thing to have changed about my system since then is this update:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6207
I'm not sure if that's likely to have anything to do with it, or if it's just because I've not been using the NAS from the Mac so much lately (mostly been working on Windows stuff the last couple of weeks). Maybe it's just coincidence that this is the first time I've noticed it.
I've tried restarting the Mac and the NAS and the same thing is happening even from that completely clean state (so no chance anything has gone into sleep mode or similar). I can access the same folders with no problems from a Windows PC over SMB. For some reason when I try to connect to the SMB share from Mavericks it completely fails to read the contents of any shared volume, so I have to use AFP (or possibly figure out what's wrong with SMB, but that could be a much harder problem to solve).
I couldn't find much about this issue by googling, although I did find a recommendation to clear the Finder cache. However, on my system, ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.finder doesn't exist. Has this been removed from Mavericks?
There's always a chance this could be a problem with the AFP implementation on the NAS, whch is an Asustor AS-202T, running the latest software (ADM 2.1.1.R3B2). Is anyone else on here using an Asustor NAS?

    hi,
    any luck resolving this?
I am investigating the slow large directory reading problem between macbook OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 and NAS Asustor 202TE ADM 2.2.1.R863
Basically, reading a large directory (c. 2,000 files) is very slow.
Then, deleting a file is fast the first time, then any subsequent delete, in same session, seems to cause a file list refresh, and slow again.
This is very painful to review sets of files created daily from my garden cam, where most need to be deleted.
I really don't want to boot up a windows machine for this task.
Potential solutions / areas to investigate:
    1. mac tcp parameters: delayed_ack, packet size, frames etc
found a good resource here for this, but I haven't found any combination that makes a difference for me
    2. turning off icon previews etc
         done this, no change
    3. directory list cache: client side vs server side
cannot find any info relating to the Asustor or mac implementation
    4. finder replacement
not sure this has any benefit
    5. smb vs afp
I haven't noticed any performance difference, so doubt this is significant
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • CS6 & OSX 10.6.8 - saving files directly to the server does not work (most of the time)

    Hi there,
we just switched from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6.8
OSX was installed on a new partition of the harddisk
    Then installed CS 5
Then installed CS 6 via (adobe creative cloud)
With CS6 we got also the problem with saving files to the server (program error)
It happens mostly with photoshop, sometimes with Illustrator.
I read a lot of posting regarding the same problem but didn´t found a real solution yet.
I am also wondering that there seems to be no solution for this now, because most of the posting i read are 1 year old.
Working locally is not really an acceptable workaround for us or anyone who needs to work with Creative Suite in a professional way.

It sounds like you've run into issues from the upgrade. I've found a Support article that helps with issues of not being able to connect after an upgrade:

  • Can connect via VPN, but can't access AFP server on same Xserve

    Hi:
I've set up our XServe with MacOS X Server 10.5.2 to do AFP and VPN (L2TP only; PPTP is disabled). The XServe is a standalone server, not connected to any other direstory server.
I can connect to the XServe's AFP server from my Mac over our wired and wireless network. The AFP server shows up in the sidebar of Finder windows. So far, so good.
I am able to successfully connect to our network via the VPN with Mac OS X 10.5.2 client (on two different machines) using L2TP through our network's firewall (on a Netopia T1 router; UDF ports 500 and 4500 and IP Protocol 50 and 51 are open) using a shared secret.
But I cannot connect to the XServe itself to use Server Admin or AFP (using afp://server.company.com or afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx via the Go > Connect to Server command).
The error I get while connecting to the 10.5.2 AFP server is Some data in apf://server.mycompany.com could not be read or written (Error Code -36 ). I saw this error associated with a SMB problem in 10.4.x, but SMB is not running.
Other iChat users in my office also do not automatically show up in the Bonjour list when I connect to the network. Other computers on our network do not appear in the sidebar of a Finder window. (I'm told these are to be expected, as Bonjour isn't supported (in the "local area Bonjour" over a WAN link - it's purely a multicast feature on the network in the office, and won't be routed across the VPN link. True?)
Now, here's the odd part. There is a second server (v10.4.11) on our network running AFP. I can connect to it (using afp://server.company.com via the Go > Connect to Server command) and mount its various sharepoints via the VPN.
The only thing I see in the VPN log that seems amiss is this (but I have no idea what it means):
    Tue Mar 11 23:09:27 2008 : Unsupported protocol 0x8057 received
--Both the 10.5.2 and the 10.4.11 servers have DNS properly configured (though our ISP; we're not running our own DNS).
--Both servers and the client have public IP addresses and have the same subnet mask. Network Utility confirms this while connected to the VPN.
--NAT is not running. The ISP is responding with public IPs for the servers.
--The firewall for the 10.5.2 server is not running (but will be once I get this all working).
--The IP address range for the VPN server doesn't overlap our DHCP pool (which also currently uses public IP addresses).
--Any user can access any service.
--No network routing definitions have been set up.
--In essence, I've followed the steps on Pages 141-142 of the Network Services Admin Guide.
One other note: After I connect, the Network Preferences > VPN > Advanced > TCP/IP window shows the IP address for the client just fine (assigned from the VPN pool), but lists the router as having the IP address of the XServe (rather than the router on the network). Is that normal?
I'm hoping I don't need to have the XServe run DNS as an internal LAN DNS server.... And I'm not sure why I would have to if I can already successfully connect to the 10.4.11 AFP server .
What simple step am I missing?
    TIA,
    mm

"I am able to successfully connect to our network via the VPN with Mac OS X 10.5.2 client (on two different machines) using L2TP through our network's firewall (on a Netopia T1 router; UDF ports 500 and 4500 and IP Protocol 50 and 51 are open) using a shared secret."
I suspect you mean UDP ports and you might need UDP port 1701 open too.
You only need IP protocol 50 (ESP), protocol 51 (AH) isn't used. And ESP is only used when client and server isn't behind NAT (when NAT is used only the UDP ports are used).
    "Unsupported protocol 0x8057 received"
This is usually seen when you can't get GRE through but since you don't use PPTP I can't be sure why this is registered in the logs. Sometimes when connecting using PPTP you have to disconnect and then reconnect for everything to work - you might try this for L2TP too.
But if you already can reach services on any LAN nodes through the VPN I wouldn't bother with it.
As you have a firewall in front of the server you need a second alias IP on the server that you can use to get at the services running on the server through the VPN. The firewall blocks all ports protocols not opened - that's why you can't use the server main IP even if the VPN is up.
The netmask is used by all nodes to determine how big your subnet is: what part of the IP number is the network number and what range the node number is in => really: should traffic be directed to a node on the same LAN or sent directly to the gw/router for forwarding.
What you can't do is connect from a NATed network to another NATed network that both are using the same network number. (That's why people should stay away from using the "default" 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 networks for VPN server LANs).
Try your settings at http://www.jodies.de/ipcalc to see what I mean.
"...lists the router as having the IP address of the XServe (rather than the router on the network). Is that normal?"
Yes. The VPN server is the VPN gw/router.
"The firewall for the 10.5.2 server is not running (but will be once I get this all working)."
If you already have a firewall in front of your servers that is a bit redundant.
"--No network routing definitions have been set up."
"I'm hoping I don't need to have the XServe run DNS as an internal LAN DNS server"
You need routing definitions if you want to setup a split tunnel VPN or all traffic is routed through the VPN when connected. The VPN becomes the default gw.
Without ipforwarding ON in the server you can only reach nodes on the server LAN - not Internet.
DNS is needed for your servers forward and reverse names/IPs for advanced services but doesn't need to run in any of your own servers.
If you decide to do a split tunnel VPN config (adding public and private routing definitions) a reachable DNS IP for VPN clients (in VPN config on server) is needed for VPN clients or they can't use names to find anything. To reach this DNS IP if public/not on your server LAN, you need your server to forward IP DNS lookups and have a routing definition for it.
A split tunnel VPN only send traffic for your server LAN through the VPN and all other traffic directly to the local gw/router (Internet).

  • Issue with AFP server dropping connections on 10.8.5 server 2.2.2

We are having issues with users getting dropped from their AFP server shares.
These issues did not start happening until we upgraded to 10.8.5 and server 2.2.2
the first symptoms were an occasional user would lose his / her active connection while copying files. They were unable to disconnect from the network shares without physically disconnecting the LAN or disabling the network on their system. Once the connection was removed they could reconnect to the network and establish their AFP shares again.
However this his escalated to every user losing connections to their AFP shares at the same time.
The server has no AFP error in the AFP error log however we are getting diskutil crash reports at around the same time. (See Below)
    The server has
smalltree 1x6 8254 with latest drivers supporting a LACP bonded 6 pair connecting to an edgecore (LACP configured)switch.
small tree 10Gb card directly connected to an edit station.
onboard ethernet connected to switch in support of DHCP & DNS. (previous version of server would not see the bonded pair)
    Two Accusys A12S2's
(we did not have this dropping connection issue before the upgrade to server 2.2.2 and OSX 10.8.5)
Users connected to any network connection to the server appear to be affected when the AFP shares are disconnected. Direcet connect, onboard ethernet port and Bonded pair connections)
diskutil verifies all shared drives appear to be ok. (All Green)

init: smb(5) repository server not running
    Hello guys,
I'm new to Sun OS and would very much appreciate if someone could identify what is the issue here and its possible solution
Background: I was booting up SunOS 10 on my vmware to carry out some tests and suddenly the electicity tripped and my server crashed (along with the just booting SunOS in vmware)
After i restored the electricity, i was trying to boot up the SUN OS again, but it just dosent start the GUI! It asks me for the root password and then just sits about! When i try to start the GUI with a init 6 it displays the error message
    Any Help Appreciated

    Guys
    Sorry for being a DODO!
I've managed to read all the help messages, the helpful Sun OS presented and understood that i could run the command below, which guides me to run further commands and i've managed to resolve the issue! I can see my GUI now! I'm saved!
    /lib/svc/bin/restore/repository
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

how do I set the HOME env variable for the launchd.peruser (com.apple.netauth.user.gui) to the correct value ?
we have a few user configured in workgroup manager (all standard). It is possible to connect via smb.
The server has been running 10.9.2 so far in suitable and stable way prior to the upgrade to 10.9.3.

I found a temp. fix. Since
    launchctl getenv HOME
did not return anything for user root I manually set
    launchctl setenv HOME "/var/root"
    and reloaded the AppleFileService with
    launchctl unload/load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist
it was then possible to connect via afp from a remote host. But still on the server afp://localhost e.g. does not accept incoming requests (same error as above).

  • 10.5.2 totally broke SMB and AFP shares (and kerberos) on my network

    Hey Folks,
I'm really kicking myself for not testing 10.5.2 first... this is a disaster for me.
After installing, I can no longer access any SMB or AFP shares (regardless of host OS) using my kerberos ticket (granted from Tiger Server).
If I use the GO menu and Connect To Server it also fails, almost instantly. The server logs suggest its not even trying.
I have totally lost access to all of my shares, ssh with kerberos is broken...
    Anyone else seeing problems?
Leopard in general introduced some issues with the local KDC on each machine trusting mdns...its a way to make back to my mac work ... and it broke SMB for me and a lot of people, but it wasn't the end of the world since I was sharing everything via AFP as well. Now that AFP is broken too I'm at a loss...100% down.

Something I have been messing with is my mit.edu.Kerberos file, located in System/Library/Preferences.
Take a Tiger machine, and use Text Editor to look at it's mit.edu.Kerberos file. Then, do the same with the Leopard machine. I've been trying to get Leopard to work with the Tiger kerberos settings, without luck so far. But it's a step in the right direction. Try this for starters:
On my system, when I try to use Connect to Server with the Finder, it gives me the vague "Volume Couldn't Mount" error.
Make a backup of mit.edu.Kerberos on your Leopard machine (use a test machine if possible, not a production machine). Then, delete the original file and reboot.
Try to COnnect TO server again. On my machine, I'm given a login prompt, which if I re-authenticate, I'm able to connect to the share. Your previously deleted mit.edu.Kerberos file has been recreated after this point. I'm not sure how permanent of a solution it is, however.
But it's something to tinker with if you're so inclined.

  • Tiger AFP Server "Error code -5000"

    Hi,
I've made yesterday the last security update for Tiger server and since yesterday I connot connect anymore to the AFP server.
I've tried to restart the server twice, deleted all shares, I can connect from PC with SMB but not from Mac with AFP.
    Error code -5000
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

OK, I finally found the problem, I had a folder instead of the real HD into /Volumes...
AFP is now working fine again...

  • Snow Leopard: can't connect to AFP server anymore

We are using the MacServerIP (9.0) AFP server on a windows 2003 server. After updating from 10.5 to 10.6 we can not connect to this server using AFP anymore (connection failed). Connecting via SMB works fine.
    Thank you very much!!

I have the same problem logging in to an old Snap Server via AFP. "you entered an invalid username or password." is the error message. All was well in OS9 through 1.4 but this broke on 10.6 upgrade fro 10.4.
Apple support has not solved the problem. One thing I noticed is in the login dialog box there is no longer a list of options like there was in all versions up through 10.4, like sending password in clear text.
It is clear, that the two computers see each other given that the request for name and password come up for the target server.

  • Finder download from afp server failed one file larger than 2Gb

I am using 10.5.1 on iMac.
    I guess this shouldn't be a problem.
I download a file from university's afp server, but fails when if has downloaded 2GB (the file is larger than 2GB) with error code 1309.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thank you.

    the disk format is:
    Mac OS Extended (Journal)

  • Can I merge or combine 2 "album artwork" folders? I have saved music onto an external server from 2 computers but the artwork that I have manually imported remains in the default folder in the music/itunes/album artwork folder on the respective PCs. Thx

Can I merge or combine 2 "album artwork" folders? I have saved music onto an external server from 2 computers but the artwork that I have manually imported remains in the default folder in the music/itunes/"album artwork" folder on their respective PCs.
i.e. artwork uploaded on one PC won't apppear on the other PC because it is saved locally...
I'm confident that i won't beable to just merge the 2 because thy'll have the same folder names.
On the same note: can I have iTunes create these files on the external server/Hard drive also so that either computer can use them at the same time?
(like I have my library- can the other files be saved remotely)
    Thx

    i'm using iTunes 10 BTW

  • External hard drive not showing up on AFP server

    hi
i have successfully connected a couple of times to a firewire external hard drive connected to my dad's iMac over the internet (AFP server) for the purpose of backing up some files, but now it doesn't show up at all as a volume when i connect to his iMac through finder/go/connect to server. i don't believe that any settings were changed, so don't understand why it isn't showing up. currently when i get info on the drive 'shared folder' is checked, everyone has permission to read and write and 'ignore ownership on this volume' is checked, and file sharing is enabled in system preferences/sharing.
does anyone have any ideas of what i can do to get the drive to show up again?
    thanks
    nick

OK, I figured it out (in case anyone else needs to know) with this information from the Western Digital site:
Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier will only recognize FAT32 partitions that are smaller than 128-gigabytes. Multiple FAT32 partitions smaller than 128-gigabytes will need to be created in order for Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier to recognize the partitions. You will need to use a Windows based computer to create FAT32 partitions, as Macintosh does not have the ability to create them.
Macintosh Operating System 10.4.x or later can recognize FAT32 partitions over 128-gigabytes.
