Saving tv shows to a hard drive

I have 2 apple tv's they run out of memory since they aren't connected to a computer. I usually delete my shows when I run out of space. but now I have too many shows downloading and my kids want to keep their shows. I bought an external hard drive is there a way I can save the shows to that. I have an old thinkpad that i can use for transfer but it doesn't have enough memory to save all the shows without transferring them to an external hard drive. Can someone tell me how to do it in simple terms. i'm not a techie.

The original Apple TV was able to sync and stream but it was not meant to be a primary source. You would have to sync to iTunes and then backup.

Time Machine creates a back up of the entire Hard Drive, with the exception of Boot Camp or exceptions you have created. So in other words after you create the profile run Time Machine, and a backup of the other user profile will be added to your Time Machine backups.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • Can't get Solaris 8 to show my second hard drive.

I installed Sol8 on a 1 hard drive intel machine (as the only OS, no windows). Later, I added a second hard drive, and after running the device config assistant (DCA) still doesn't show it in the list of drives under the 'format' command.
Physically, the new hard drive is using middle IDE plug on my IDE 0, original drive is plugged in on the end of IDE 0. The new hard drive is jumperred to slave, original was orignially set for single, that didn't work so I tried jumperring that one to master, no change in results. On IDE 1 I have a cd-rom on the end plug, originally with no jumper, then added jumper for master (middle plug is empty).
In the BIOS, the second drive was detected with the right number of heads, cyl, etc. It calls it my D drive.
I can get to certain screens in DCA to show me the second drive (only in respect to which drive should boot the kernal - I don't want to install the OS on the second drive, I just want it for extra storage).
Am I missing a step, or am I not installing the hard drive correctly? After DCA and reboot, it still only gives me a choice of my origial drive for 'format', and only shows one drive in the SMC.
I don't know what is on the new drive (it was pulled from another PC).

I have the same problem on x86 Solaris 10 that the format command cannot show my second hard drive, the master and slave hard disk are attached through one single cable and Solaris 10 is intalled in the master disk. I tried devfsadm -v but it still doesn't work, do you have any other way to do that? Thank you for any help.

how come my mac isnt showing my external hard drive after installing os x maverick? and how to i fix that??

How do you mean it isn't showing the external drive?  If you mean on the desktop, click Finder on the menu bar, Preferences, General and check the boxes for Show these items on the desktop - make sure hard drives is checked.
If you mean it is not showing in Finder or Disk Utility, make sure it is turned on, reboot and see if that mounts it so it shows up.

  • How can i make apple tv 3 store all my purchased movies and tv shows onto a hard drive somewhere in my house

Currently my apple tv 3 downloads movies/shows when I want to watch them.  I'd prefer if it downloaded everything already and it is all available locally without having to download gigabytes from the internet.
Q: How can i make apple tv 3 store all my purchased movies and tv shows onto a hard drive somewhere in my house?
    a) Impossible
    b) Link my apple tv 3 to a computer running itunes
    c) Link my apple tv 3 to my Apple Time Machine
    d) purchase an external USB drive and plug it directly to the apple tv 3
    e) purchase a NAS drive and configure the apple tv 3 to use it
    f) [your answer here]

    Hi! Dwagner, once again ...
I've just got my Mac last friday ... i'm still getting amazed with this new world to me ... eehe .. quite different ... but
... "i can do it, i can do it" eheeh
i'm in that period that a new question appears at almost every mouse click ... lol
so ... can you help me (once again) ..
you said you had your hard drive with this settings...
"You can partition for OSX (extended Journal) - read/write by only OSX or read only by Windows via BootCamp
You can partition for Windows (NTFS) - readable by only Windows
OR - you can format with ex-FAT and this is read/write capable for both operating systems."
how did you formated the partition in NTFS ? ... on the mac? using the "disk utility" ? or did you use another program to do so ...?
i hope i'm not "bugging" you ... this might be a silly question for most of people ... but right now ... it's a major question for me ... ehehe
    once again Obrigado (Thank You)

  • Saving photos to an external hard drive

My mac keeps telling me the start up disk is nearly full 'make space by deleting files' so i bought an external hard drive and saved all word documents to it and deleted them from the mac and all seems fine (although the start up disk is apparently still nearly full). iphoto is another matter. I transferred the photos and all seemed well and good, then i trialed deleting one or two from the mac and they deleted from the external hard drive too. I've tried it with the drive off and when i restart the drive its the same: the photo i've deleted from the mac is missing from the drive too. Also I cannot access iphoto backups on time machine, the most recent shows up but all others are blacked out and unresponsive. can someone please help? i'm on iphoto 08 and want to be able to make sure everything is saved anad backed up so i can upgrade the operating system and also have some space on my computer!!

    To move an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I cannot access iTunes songs showing in external hard drive

I recently closed my dropbox account and moved its content to an external hard drive. This included iTunes songs  and now the songs and related albums no longer show in iTunes when I open it up, although I can see the individual songs (but not in albums)  in the external hard drive.  There are a limited number of albums still showing when I open up iTunes but they are albums I have recently added to iTunes.
However I can see the albums and tracks in the iTunes media folder on my Mac internal hard drive, but they do not show up when I actually open up Itunes.I have followed advice found on this website and have tried to move my iTunes folder to the external drive so all the music is in one place, but i keep getting an 'error code 50' message appearing.  I have also tried to select the individual songs on the hard drive and move them to the media folder but there are no 'albums' to move them into and they just sit there as individual songs.  I have a macbook air which is one year old and a WD My Passport ultra 1TB external hard drive.  I am using OSX version 10.9.5 with 8GB of memory.  As you can tell from my endeavours, I do not really understand the way iTunes works and it may be that the various songs and albums in the media folder need to be organised in a different way perhaps, so that they are visible when I open up iTunes?
As I have lots of space on my external hard drive and am running out of space on my Mac hard drive, ideally I would like all my iTunes folders to be held on my external drive, as it is always plugged in to my Mac, and for iTunes to be 'pointed' to the hard drive.   Any advice please?
    Thanks
    Elizabeth

All kinds of things going on.
About the error code.  Do you men "50" or do you mean "-50"?  It is critical things get reported exactly here.  Error -50 is a very unhelpful generic communications error with a number of possible causes.  Something between the drive to which you are downloading and the drive from which it is all coming is not working correctly, with probably dozens of possibilities.  I guess one simple possibility is if this is a brand new drive it likely came formatted for Windows use and needs reformatting for Mac.

Basic workings of iTunes.  When you add a file to iTunes it puts the file in a specific location designated in you Media Folder preferences setting and makes a note in a database file (library.itl) of where it put it.  When you want to play the track iTunes looks up where the file should be, goes there and plays that file.  iTunes does not inventory its media folder for new additions.  For iTunes to recognize tracks they have to be added to iTunes either by importing, dragging to iTunes, or dragging to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder.  If files added to iTunes are later moved by you in Finder, particularly to another drive, iTunes loses track of them completely and give you a broken link indicator " ! ".

I don't know exactly how Dropbox works but basically by moving all your files instead of letting iTunes do the relocating you have broken all the links to your older files in iTunes.  You can either repair them one by one, by one, by one....  or you can rebuild your library, or essentially create a new library and start over again (you did read those links I provided didn't you?).  If you are prepared to start over, hold down the option key while starting iTunes.  Create a new library on the external drive.  Drag all your media files to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder in the iTunes folder on that drive.

  • Saving a website on the hard drive so that you can put it on another host

I just made a website and want to save it to my hard drive just in case everything crashes or there is a dispute with the host and then I will have the website ready to put on another host. For example, if the host decides they don't like my content they might just pull it off the web. I have heard it happen to people and they had to find another host. I don't think it will happen to me but you never know and I just want to have a copy so that if there is any dispute, I can have the website saved and ready to put up on another hosting account.
Can I just save it from the web using "Save file"? Will that save it in a form that's good enough for putting on another host? I can hire a designer to put it on the host if it takes a few extra programming steps, so long as I have the files saved .....
Or do I have to do something complicated like special save programs like
    http://www.sitesucker.us/mac.html ?
I use Scrapbook add-on on Firefox to save the webpages I like just in case the site gets pulled down in the future. Is that the kind of thing I need? If that is all I need, can I use Scrapbook to save my website?
Will it save all the information to restore the website on another host exactly as it appears? My website has been coded with HTML/CSS. I don't think there is much PHP.
I am not sure about databases. My website is simply selling a service so I don't keep a database I think or just a minimal one. The customer fills out a form and the information goes to my email address. And the information on my website doesn't change. It isn't a blog that I am adding information to constantly. It just has links for navigating to different pages on the same website. It doesn't have links that point to other websites. There are no fancy files like movies etc.
I just want something to save my website so that I or an experienced web person can easily put it back up on another host.
I use Snow Leopard 6.0 by the way. I haven't upgraded to Snow Leopard 6.3 because there were a lot of problems when I did that in the past. So I went back to Snow Leopard 6.0. (It's been good so far so I think I will stay with it.)

I didn't make it. I gave the psd design to a web designer and gave him instructions to make it using CSS as I heard CSS web pages load faster. He said he wouldn't use database programming languages like php or MySquareL or whatever they're called because he said I didn't need them and he would charge me a lot more for that, so I said just make it with CSS/HTML. I think he's a PC guy, not a mac guy. He's a professional designer and he made my website from scratch from my designs, not with a website builder.
He hasn't put it on the host yet though he's just about to. I did a search about backing up your website and one website said that some hosts allow you to backup the website using cPanel or something like that. I don't know whether my host has that or not. My host account is very cheap like $16 a year so I don't think there are any special features to the hosting account.

  • Problem saving .dv file to external hard drive

    Hello -
I'm trying to copy an old VHS tape to DVD. VCR to camcorder to iMovie 4.0.1 and edits all went smoothly. To create the .dv file I did File > Share > QuickTime tab > compress for Full Quality DV and created a 5.68 GB file movie1.dv - all OK.
I don't have a DVD burner on my Mac, so I'm trying to copy the file to an external USB hard drive (Maxtor, FAT32 format) for transfer to my PC. The drive seems to work fine, and I can copy other files to it. But when I try to copy the .dv file to the HD it goes almost all the way through with the save and then I get an error: The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in the "movie1.dv" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).
Error -36 seems to be a "bad disk" thing, or maybe a "corrupt file" - hard to tell for sure. I don't see how it could be the disk, since other files copy onto it just fine. If it's a corrupt file, what did I do wrong making the .dv file?
Many thanks for help. - G

I have been using a Lacie 120 gig drive for file saving. I just bought another external HD, it is a Maxtor. I installed the OS X version of drive format, but it WILL NOT work with I-Movie--as soon as you try and import video, it freezes and quits. I can copy files to it, but have not tried seeing if they play back or burn properly (I don't want to waste that much time copying huge files). Does anyone know about external hard drives that do NOT work well with IMovie? This model has a USB A-B connection and it operates at 9600 rpm.
    Thanks for any tips

  • Saving movies to an external Hard drive

I'm confused by all the alternatives to saving my projects and/or events. I have a 500 Gig external hard drive on which I would like to back up my material in order to avoid all the clutter and clips on my iMac ( I use iMovie 11) which I can then presumably delete after backing up, but then import again if required from the external H/D. I am just using up a whole lot of space on my computer with all the movie files.
    1) Do I finalise the projects before exporting ?
    2) Under the "share" option should I use "export using quick time" ?  What is the difference ?
    3) I realise the importance of keeping the raw video the projects point to, so does the actual EVENT have to be finalised in some way before saving ?
    4) I have uploaded a few movies onto Youtube (Restricted viewing) and they are automatically converted to MP4 presumably prior to publishing.  Does the    same thing happen when saving or archiving to an external HD ?
    5) Is there any advantage in converting the finished project to another file type before exporting ?
    6) When importing back into iMovie, does it have to be any particular file type ?
    7) Is there anyway I can separate the events from the projects when saving externally ?
These are the questions that come immediately to mind, but I would appreciate hearing from others what they feel is the best way to back-up externally on a dedicated unit.  I already have time machine, but I find that I would rather have all my movies together on one unit rather than search for them by date when saved with a whole lot of other stuff. I don't really want to burn each individual project onto a disc which is another alternative I suppose.  I have lost precious video in the past and don't want to experiment before I know what I am doing.

To move events and projects to an external drive, follow the instructions here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
To SHARE a movie to the external drive, use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE or SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME.

  • HT1351 I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I saved my iTunes on external hard drive and reinstalled them.  My iTunes no longer recognizes my device - a 5th gen. iPod. I can's synch

I upgraded my Dell computer from Vista to Windows 7.  I saved my iTunes library on an external hard drive.  I somehow managed to erase them from my iPod.  Now my songs won't play on the Dell and my iPod is not "recognized" as a device by my computer.  I have "reset" the iPod by toggling the lock and holding down the menu and center button at once, but still no luck.  How can I get my songs from my Dell back to my iPod?

At a guess you followed the process in HT1364 - iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder which would have moved the media folder to a new path of your choice. This process leaves the library database files back in the original location of <User's Music>\iTunes. Often people assume that all they need is now on the external drive and wipe the internal drive, or discard their old computer, before backing up the all important iTunes folder. If you have a backup of your user's profile folder from before the upgrade the iTunes library folder should be in there somewhere. Restore it to <User's Music> and your original library should pop back into existence. The external drive would need to have the same drive letter that it had previously.
A more effective way to relocate the library is to move the entire iTunes folder to the external drive, then hold down shift when starting iTunes and keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. You would then choose the file iTunes Library.itl in the iTunes folder on the external drive. If this is the way you moved the library before then that is how you should now reconnect to it. Changing the media folder in preferences doesn't change which .itl database file is opened, nor does double-clicking on an .itl file directly.
If you no longer have the original .itl file then you will have to build a new library and import the media to it. If you need to do this I would recommend you create a new library at F:\iTunes, then move your existing media folders inside F:\iTunes\iTunes Media before importing. This will avoid the creation of duplicates and make sure the library is in the correct shape going forwards.
If you have an iPod or iOS device my scripts ImportDevicePlaylists and SyncStats may well let you recover ratings, play counts & playlists from the device.
When you've fixed up your libray you should consider getting a second external drive to backup to.
