SAVING VIDEO CLIPS

Can I copy video clips from a DVD to use in the Imove Library and use them to compile a Project or do I have to use my Sony camera to download clips from tape exclusively?

Yes.

Not if you mean from a DVD video.  While you can copy the files on a DVD video to other Mac disks, they are not in a format directly useable by iMovie.   Moreover, if they are commercial DVD video disk files, they are likely copyrighted so as to prevent their use in your iMovie Projects anyway.

No, not exclusively.  Use your Mac's iMovie > Help menu command to search for "import" (without the quotation marks.  You can also look in Apple Support for articles like iMovie '11: Import video from movie files or other articles from a search like this one.   You may also be helped by some of the tutorials and other info in iMovie Support.

  • Saving video clips to iPhone Album

I'm using QuickTime Pro to edit a video clip that's in an iPhoto album but I can't then save the amended clip back to the iPhoto album. Does anyone know how to do it?

    yes
    excellent .
i wonder why i have had to switch to that way of doing it.?.
maybe its just the way the quicktime 701 version works.....?
Just out of interest...in the activity window the video clip is rated as having 0 bytes, even though i can play it on the web page.
Yet when i succesfully carried out your instruction, the quicktime movie saved to my desk top was around 1.6mb in size. So where is that 1.6mb coming from?

  • Problems with saving video clips

Ok here is what I'm looking to do. I'm working on a project containin over 15 hours of raw video spread. Can I capture one full hour of video, go into FCE and pick the individual clips from that one hour that I want, and delete the other unused video without messing with the clips I saved? If so, how do you go about doing this.

Whatever you capture, FCE saves. In other words, if you capture an hour of video and only use 10 minutes in your Timeline, FCE still wants to reference that entire hour. Delete the rest of the video and you will loose the reference and the project will not work.
You can always use Capture Clip to set In and Out points in your raw video, thusly capturing just what you need. FCE does not have batch capture, so you will have to capture one clip at a time but this will save you space.
Be sure to properly log your tapes (Reel 1, Reel 2, etc) in case you need to recapture the project later on
There are alternatives: You can capture one tape at a time, go in, "cut out" the clips you want, saving them to a new Sequence. When you have the clips you want, you can export that Sequence as a self-contained Quicktime movie then ditch the original tape. However, I think Capturing Clip is the more desired approach

When you move or copy the compound clips with their events into an external drive all the events should be there. Not clear on why you want to move them into a single event. You can drag and drop from one event to another.
Why are you using compound clips? You can simply copy the project from each machine with used media onto the external drive and that should do it.

  • Aperture - when you have saved a multi-media slideshow and you export it how do you make sure the audio track retains the volume drops that you programme in? I have video clips with audio, which when they play in the slideshow, I fade the audio (music)?

Aperture - Sorry I'm new to this so this might be a bit long! I put together an aperture slideshow with a backing music track and some video interspersed with photos. When I exported it to put on you tube the audio backing track had not saved the fades that I had programmed when the video clips played. The video clips had audio on them that I set at one volume whilst fading the backing track. these fades didn't save on the exported version. Any suggestions please? Regards, Maxjackpete

    Hi shaza31,
If your iPhone was set to save photos to Photo Stream, you may be able to access them by turning on Photo Stream on your other devices. The following article may be helpful:

  • Where should I be saving my video clips?

I have hundreds of video clips from my camcorder and iphone.
I've compiled a few of them into short videos in imovie of around 200MB and play them back via itunes on apple TV (and ideally would also like to play them via my ipod).
Where should I be storing the videos - presumably in imovie? I could also store them in iphoto (where they initially get downloaded to) or itunes.
When I convert them to itunes, am I saving two 200MB versions - one in imovie and one in itunes?
    Thanks in advance

Yes. Store everything. Hard drives are at 10 cents a gigabyte or less.
You need an external drive that is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). (also called HFS+ journaled). If your drive is a FAT32 drive, you can repartition/reformat using Disk Utility.
All moves should be made from within iMovie. If you do not, your projects will not work.
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK.
You should see your disk drive listed in the Event Library List and the Project Library List. You can Command-Drag the small icons for the Events onto the small icon for the drive, and this will move them. (If you do not hold dowm the command key while dragging, it will copy, not move).
You can do the same command-drag action in the Project Library List.
A slick way to have a complete copy on external disk is to first command-drag the Project to the external disk (as mentioned above. Then, with this Project selected in the Project Library List, click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA... This will move all Events that are used in the Project to the same external disk. It will also put a copy of any photos or music used on the external disk, so you can take the external disk and edit on another Mac if you need to.

  • I have quicktime  player 7.7.2. A relative video clips from his phone. Previously they downloaded with both video and audio. As of Sept. 30 only the audio downloads, yet Quicktime still plays older saved video/audio clips. Help?

I have Quicktime Player 7.7.2. A relative has been sending video clips from his phone since June, and until Sept. 30 both the video and audio would download. SInce that date only the audio downloads, yet I can still open and play the older saved videos just fine. I tried looking at QuickTime help info available. One place said something about purchasing Quick Pro for use with 7.7.2, but if I need that, why can I still open older saved videos? Thanks for any help.

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.

  • Can I play video clips that have been saved onto a thumbdrive on an iPad without saving the clips to the iPad first?

    You can't.
Try uploading to Dropbox, Box.net or Sugarsync to play video.

  • Creating and saving a photo from video clip in iMovie '11

    Hello,
My dad took what he thought were photos from his iPhone. Turned out to be a bunch of one second video clips as he accidentally had it on the video camera mode. Trying to create a still photo image from these clips. What's the best way to do this? Is iMovie able to do this? If so, some guidance would be greatly appreciated.
I did try searching with no luck.
    Thanks for your help,
    AJ

You can import the clips from your iPhone into iMovie 11.
There are two approaches. Let's call them the shotgun approach and the rifle approach.
    Shotgun approach:
Drag the 1 second video clips into an iMovie Project. Then SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME.
Choose Still image sequence. This will give you 30 jpegs per second for all the clips. In other words, it will give you every single frame, converted to a still.
    Rifle Approach:
Download a free app to your Mac called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5.
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iPhoto, right click on one of the Video clips, and select "Show in Finder".
Drag these clips from the Finder into MPEG Streamclip. You should be able to hit the Play button and see them all.
Move the playhead in MPEG Streamclip to the exact frame that you want. Then click FILE/Export Frame. You can choose whether you want JPEG, TIFF, or PNG. And choose a location. Move the playhead to the next frame you want and repeat.

  • Saving a Transition with a video clip...

I am using an Edge Wipe transition, which I painstakingly synchronized with a clip of a car driving by. I would like to be able to re-apply the wipe and the car driving by several times throughout my sequence. Is there a way to do this in one move? ie. make a Default Transition that includes a video clip?
    thanks

The transition can't include the clip. The only thing you can save is the transition as a favorite or as the default and then copy and paste (or other ways) the clip and then add the transition. There are many different two steps ways of doing this, but no one step way, unless you also take the shot afterward as well, the shot to which the car is being wiped from.
All in all, it's probably taken more time for you to post the message and get the replies than it would be to actually do it.

  • Can I Block Saving of Video Clips?

I have video clips (MOV files) on a website which icons in a PDF that I built can link to and open (to clarify: the icons are actually just virtual boxes around icon pictures that were in the Word doc from which it was built). Usually, the MOV files open in a web page (that's good enough), and the user can right click on them and save them (that's bad); note: my default browser is Foxfire.
However, I notice that if I have MS Internet Explorer open (but only if I have it actually open), the MOV files open in their own Quicktime window (good!), and the user cannot click on them and save them (great!). Is there any way I can force this desired behavior when I build the PDF?
(Note that the consumers of the PDF will have it resident on their local PC.)
    Thanks for your help!

I have just learned (as a side issue consulting with a godaddy.com tech) that this is a function of the user's browser and how it's configured. So it seems I can do nothing from within Acrobat to force the behavior I desire. However, according to this tech, SWF files are harder to simply save to the users hard drive. (Doubtless anything can be hacked, but these not sophisticated users, and I intend to remove the restriction later anyway.)
So... is there a way to convert MOV's to SWF's?  I notice that lots of products on the web claim to do that, but are there any you would recommend, not only as one capable converting MOV to SWF with little loss of information, but as most likely safe (i.e., not be a hidden way to deliver malware)?
    Thanks.

There are several methods for accomplishing this, and Steve's recommendation for SceneAlyzer is a good one, if one wants the longer Source File broken into "scenes."
When creating "sub-clips" * one must consider Handles, as if they edit too tightly, and then use those "sub-clips" in a Project, and apply Transitions, Handles will be necessary. This article goes into Handles in more detail: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/701768?tstart=60
Also, using a CODEC, that does either light compression, or lossless compression, will pay quality dividends, when one goes to edit those "sub-clips." This article goes into more detail, for some lossless CODEC's: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/875797?tstart=0
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    * The term "sub-clips" is used here to denote shortened and edited Clips from a larger "master clip." Note: in Premiere Pro, and some other NLE (Non Linear Editor) programs, there is an official term Sub-Clips, that have a slightly different meaning, and function, within a Project. Similar, but different. Here, I am using the term in a slightly different fashion, hence the " marks, and lack of capitalization.
