Saving Webpages

This is a simple question, but one that I can never get to work in Safari (and I have used it for years, but use other browsers for saving as documents).
I can never get Safari to save an entire webpage in a format that I can save in my computer and include in a file as say, a PDF. Whenever I use the "Save" function in Safari (and select the option that is supposed to include all images, text, etc), all I can ever see are question marks (when I then open the saved filed on my computer). Safari NEVER saves files as a complete image of the website (this is difficult when I must save estimates that are to be included in a report as a PDF). After all of these years, why doesn't Safari provide this feature?
I will continue to use Safari for browsing, but still cannot use it for work or actual saving websites as documents. Am I missing something. or is this a glitch (this happens on all of my Macs in Safari).
I should mention that I can save the webpage in Safari when I use the Grab tool and save the window in Grab, but this seems rather labor-intensive when other browsers can save a webpage as a complete image that can be stored.

Neuro: Thanks for your response. Did you try saving as a Web Archive, then turning off AirPort, and then opening the file?
Scott, I have been able to duplicate your experience by saving in Safari as a Web Archive and then turning AirPort off to simulate trying to open the file while offline. I get question marks where graphics used to be.
I echo Neuro's post regarding printing the file as a PDF (follow his instructions). This works great other than slightly blurry pictures.
My other suggestion would be to try Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html - find the browser of your preferred language under the OS X column). I saved some web pages from Firefox and Firefox created a supplemental folder with supporting items. When I opened the file with AirPort off it worked perfectly for one page and at least better than Safari for the other (images were there but the text and format was a little scrambled). Perhaps if you only need the images and text for reference, and format is not a huge issue, this could be an appropriate solution.
Personally I think that printing as a PDF is a cleaner and simpler solution - you are able to stay with one browser if you have any reservations about having two, and you only have to track one PDF file vs. a folder of files via the Firefox method I suggest.
Your call - I hope we've been helpful!

  • Mountain Lion opens in Mail, a in pdf saved webpage, with textedit

When i want to send someone a webpage in pdf format Mail makes a document named: WebPage
The extension .pdf is missing. And I think that is why the file will be opened with textedit.
When the document is opened, I only see the program language of the pdf file, instead of the saved webpage.
How can I make Mountain Lion save the webpage with a .pdf extension?

This is a known issue in Pages 5's tables. Pages 5 has been out for 9 months now and there is no sign of Apple fixing the issue.
Use Pages '09 if you have it.

  • App or tool to create a stickie or comment on a saved webpage?

Hi, I am looking for an app or tool that will allow me to insert  a note or comment (like a stickie)  on a webpage I've saved in bookmarks.  I know the webpage lives on the owner's server, but at times I want to tag a comment on a page to remind me of something I want to remember later, when I come back to it.  Does anyone know of anything like this?

Hmmm, thats a very open question...
I keep a blog site that reflects some of my ideas while dealing with XMLDB. Also I am using it for answering questions on this forum (so I don't have to copy / paste and or repeat myself) and I am using it as a "notepad" if I have forgotten how it goes... You can download a substract of last years posts here: [An introduction into Oracle XMLDB 11gR1 |http://www.liberidu.com/blog/images/Marco%20Gralike%20-%20An%20introduction%20into%20Oracle%20XMLDB%2011gR1.pdf]
....although I would really urge you / readup on the first two chapters in the Oracle XMLDB Developers Guide for 11g (although you are NOT using this version, but 10g). It describes the fundementals you need to understand before you even can start making descisions about how, what or when "should I use...?", "gives me the best performance...?", "how can I solve my issue...", ETC.

  • Excel 2004 and saving webpages - help!

I'm working on a project where we're trying to save a large number of excel sheets as html so we can link them together in various ways. As the only person in the office who can write html, I'm stuck with it. The problem is, using the 'save as webpage' function in excel gives webpages that look rubbish and unprofessional, but we don't have the time to format each page individually to the degree I would like.
It seems such an obvious thing to have an option where the 'save as webpage' step can be modified, or to allow users to run the sheets through a custom template when saving as html. But I can't see a way of doing that in Excel 2004.
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to make Excel work my way, or failing that, if there's a decent shareware program or something around that will help me?
    Cheers,
    Suz

    Hi, Suz.
I don't have an answer for you, but I know where you may find one.
You might want to search or post on the "Excel" group you can find on the Microsoft Mac Support - Newsgroups page. These are Google Groups with active participation from MS Excel users, including a variety of expert users.
Be sure to state the version of Excel you are using if you post there, as you did here.
I don't mean to send you somewhere else, but I've found numerous answers there for folks with questions related to MS products. Accordingly, it has often proved to be the first, best place to look for answers to questions such as you are asking.
As to freeware or shareware that may help you with this, let me also suggest that you search MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.
FWIW, I've often found the results of the "Save as HTML" features of applications to be disappointing. Usually they perform only the most basic conversion and one then has to perform a good bit of tweaking to make the pages presentable.
As a final note, if your budget will permit, you might want to look at FileMaker Pro. Data from the Excel files can easily be imported into FileMaker and FileMaker has many features for publishing databases to the Web.
    Good luck!

Generally, we just right click the blank of a webpage, click "Create shortcut", then it will prompt whether you want to save it on the desktop, did you save the webpage in this way? Once
it saved on the desktop, please right click the shortcut, choose properties, and view the URL of the shortcut.

  • Saving webpages as pdf and/or png in a batch manner? w/ Automator perhaps?

I have some old livejournals that I'd like to archive in some way. A long time ago for one of them, I used Paparazzi to create .png's for every single day's entries. This was slow but it got the job done. For another more recent endeavor with another journal, I was doing the same thing however then I saw the .pdf functionality. I thought, perhaps pdf's would be more useful because they are searchable, although in some ways I like having a plain png as almost a backup to the backup. I realized that I might want to go back to the other journal (which has like 9 years of content) and re-capture it into .pdf and do the same for this newer one... but I will not be taking the time to do this one by one again.
I tried Automator but Paparazzi apparently doesn't have Universal commands even though it has commands within Automator.
So I need another solution, with or without Paparazzi, that will allow me to at the least just type in all the urls (which will only be off by a digit or two for dates, thus saving time overall) and then letting it batch capture into a .pdf or .png.

I appreciate the tip, however it doesn't seem to be efficient. I downloaded and installed it, then I ran this sequence.
    Get Current Webpage from Safari
Download URLs as PDFs (downloads file as a number for the day)
Add Text to Finder Items Names (Month- gets added before number)
Add Text to Finder Items Names (Year- gets added after number)
So this works... but only once. The program needs to be closed and re-opened as a workflow for it to download a webpage again properly. It'll create just blank white pdf's otherwise. Then if I make it a stand alone application it gives me an error about it not being universal.
A shame but I appreciated the help.
Does anyone else have any ideas???

  • Opening saved webpage redirects to file index folder

I saved a webpage on Lion and now when I go to open it on Snow leopard it redirects me to file:/// which makes it so that I cannot view the file image.
How can I make it so that I can look at the web page I saved?

I can open the file and I can view the webpage image that I saved for a couple of seconds before it redirects to file:///

  • On trying to open a URL from an external program or a saved webpage I get an error saying "There was a problem sending the command to the program." It did not do this in the last version I was using, I am now using FIrefox 8.

It happens with all programs, including the default Explorer.exe (for saved pages).

It somehow decided to fix itself? It just worked for some reason after I said something here (well, a few hours later).

  • Saving webpages as pdf

is there any way to save webpages as pdf in firefox without using addon because no addon creates pdf in good quality(even print pages to pdf).

    Hi
I am not aware of any way to do that natively (without an addon) in Firefox.
Although I do not do it very often, [https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/addon/print-pages-to-pdf/ Print pages to Pdf] is a useful addon, if you want to capture important details from a page and store it as a *.pdf file (as a booking receipt for example).
I appreciate that on some occasions, some display elements may not port across, but please appreciate that many web pages are not designed to be printed out on paper, let alone a *.pdf file.

  • Encription when saving webpage as a PDF

This might be basic but why does this continue to happen on some websites and not others. What do I need to do so all the text is not encripted.

    Hi,
The most common cause of this type of issue is misplaced page break elements. In the Design tab use the View > Page View menu item to switch to the PDF view of the form then check that the page break elements are positioned correctly.

  • Saving webpages instead of publishing

I apologize in advance if this has been asked - I'm new!
I have several pages in iWeb that I want to save, but not necessarily publish. Is there a way to do this? I don't want to delete my old blog, but I don't want to publish it any more.
    Thanks!

    Tyr,
    Wecome to the forums.
There are two ways you can save your pages.
    1. copy your domain file to a CD disk, or external hard drive, or flash drive, etc. The domain file should be located in your user/library/application support folder. This is were all your unpublished iWeb work is kept, all on this single file. It's very important to keep this file safely and frequently backed up. If you lose this file you lose all your work. iWeb cannot edit your published pages.
    2. You can also save the site by publishing to a folder on your computer.
In the main iWeb File drop down menu choose Publish to a folder and choose a location on your hard drive. This will create an site right on your computer that your browser can open much as if it were published on .mac. (the slide show isn't as functional but it's OK)
I would suggest doing both these things. Once you've safely moved your domain file off the computer you can delete the original domain file. (iWeb will create a new one when you start up the application.
    Good luck, David Phelps http://web.mac.com/phelpssculpture/iWeb/

  • In Mountain Lion, Safari Reader recognises fewer webpages than in Lion. Do you experience the same?

In Mountain Lion, Safari Reader does not accept webpages than used to work with Reader in Lion, for example Wikipedia entries.
Do you experience the same? I find the Reader Function very useful for reading and saving webpages. Please expand its compatibility with more websites again, Apple.

Me too. On a article web page, more often than not, the Safari reader button is greyed out. What is even more strange, i can make it appear after 2 or 3 refresh of the same page, or if I play with the safari windows width or height. It seems more stable when Safari is full screen. Very weird.

  • Save webpage pdf. Using Macbook Pro, 10.7.5. Remedy?

I'm unable to open a saved webpage pdf. When I click on it to open, the message is: "The file '...' could not be opened because it is empty."  Using Safari, Macbook Pro, 10.7.5. Remedy?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
