Saving with a preview in the finder

Am I doing something wrong when I save Pages Documents? My saved files now show up as a pages logo in the finder instead of with a preview of the actual document like it did in iWork '08. I thought I might be able to do something in the preferences to change this, but nothing seems to work. iWork '08 just did it automatically. Anybody have anything to say on this?

(a) packages are larger than flat files because
(1) they use numerous toc on the disk (one per embedded file) while the flat ones uses only one.
(2) only the index.xml file is compressed while in the flat ones the entire set of components is compressed as a single item.
(b) in flat files, the preview is 'hidden' in the compressed file so, coverflow can't reach it. At least at this time. Maybe one day it will able to read it from the compressed doc but as far as I know, this would require an 'expand' process which would be severely time consuming.
(c) at this time, preview files created under 10.5.6 are huge because they are built using the 'better' setting. It's foolish but it's

Mac: No preview in the Finder after conversion to DNG

My Ricoh GR creates DNG files that have previews in the Finder. But because the file sizes are big (and I don't need them so big), in Lightroom I reconvert them to Lossy DNG (using compatibility with Camera Raw 7.1 or later). Now, after this conversion, these new DNGs don't have any previews in the Finder anymore.
So, the problem must be with the DNG converter in Lightroom!

Icon preview in the Finder won't work anymore.

After doing a 10.5.6 "Archive and Install", all the iWork '09 icon previews disappeared. The files were saved with the "Include preview in document" selected. No luck with "Show View Options". Any ideas?

(b) it seems that the "Archive and Install" process doesn't took care of your old preferences file so the apps rebuilt a new preferences filke which defaults wirh the "Save new documents as packages" unchecked.
I will wait a few days hoping that some other user confirm that the "Archive…" process really dro the preferences file. If i get confirmation, I will file a bug report because the process is supposed to keep these preferences.
I can't check by myself because my disk running 10.5 is already set to 10.5.7.
It would be useful to know how behaves the process when updating to 10.5.6 and when updating to 10.5.7.
Maybe the possible bug is already corrected.
Dropping them is really annoying because the file contains the table of autosubstitution couples and the table of custom keyboard shortcuts.

What happened to video preview in the Finder?

In the Finder under Tiger, when a video file was highlighted in column view, there was a bar underneath so you could navigate through the video. Its not there in Leopard. I have spent a while looking for it, because I couldn't believe that Apple would actually remove a very useful feature. Am I missing something, or did some bonehead decide that the Finder would be better with less features?

Press spacebar when the file is selected, and you'll be able to navigate through the video file. It's a new feature called "Quick Look"

Problem with mp3 illustration in the finder since 10.6.8 update !

since the last update to mac os X 10.6.8 my mp3 illustartions are not present anymore in the finder.... but i can see them in itunes! can anyone help me? it seems to be a bug cause some people with mac os X lion meet the same problem....

Nope. It's very erratic. For example, just now I cycled several times between the inbox and the smart mailbox and even closed and re-opened. The inbox showed messages. Then I quit mail and re-opened, the inbox was empty. It took a couple more cycles of quit and re-open to get an inbox display. But as soon as I got it back on, and then closed or changed mailboxes, it disappeared when I went back to the inbox.
Hellofa way to run a railroad.
And just for reference, when I first had this issue last week under 10.6.8, I read several posts on this forum wherein other users had problems with the inbox display. Other than the smart mailbox "fix", I never did find a definitive solution or explanation as to why it is occuring.

How to use the sharing function with other pc on the Finder sidebar?

I discver my housemates' pc's names under "sharing" on the Finder sidebar. We all use the same wifi network at home. Neither they nor I have enabled anything so I'm just wondering what is that for and where am I able to control sharing options?
Also I can even access their iTunes libraries. How do these all work? Am I able to set any security options at all?

My 2011 MacBook Air is now hanging rather frequently, regardless of program. Any suggestions?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Something is wrong with my preview in the column layout of the Open dialog

I can't figure out why this is happening. I try and resize the preview pane but can't seem to make it happen. Ideas?

Viewing animated GIFs in the Finder and Preview

I was wondering why my animated gif images do not play while I view them in the preview in the Finder or Preview. I know it plays when I view gifs in Explorer and was wondering why doesn't the Finder/Preview.
I would really like to be able to view the animated gifs without having to open either Safari or Fire Fox to view them.

Apparently Preview lost that functionality a few versions ago. And Quicklook also doesn't seem to do it. Someone said that Pathfinder plays them, http://www.cocoatech.com.
If you don't want to use a "big" program like Safari or Quicktime, then your best bet is to use a quick and easy image viewer like Xee http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/xee.html.
Set it as default application by selecting a gif file, press cmd-I. Choose Xee under Open with and click Change all.

Where is With Time Capture box in the Find panel?

I need to find some photos by using capture dates. I know that I have to select With Capture Date in the Find panel of the Library module, but I can't find it... Does the Find panel is really what appears when you do "cmd + F"?

You can use the library filter (there's a capture time column) or create a
smart collection using the capture time as a criteria.

Movie icons don't get a preview on the desktop like jpegs do.

Hi,
I have .jpeg, .wmv and .mov files on my dektop and have set up the desktop so that all icons get a preview pic. But only the jpegs seem to show the preview pic. The movie files simply show a white and blue 'Q movie' icon. Sometimes they show the preview of the movie but more often than not they display the default 'Q movie' icon.
Anyone know how I can remedy this please?

It's all about what can be viewed natively in Quicktime, and what cannot. WMVs, for example, require that the "Flip4Mac" components be installed. This allows Quicktime to open and play the files, but it does nothing for previews in the Finder.
Similarly, if a file requires that a third-party codec be installed in order for Quicktime to play the file, previews will probably not be generated.

Previews don't play in the finder (or with Quicklook)

Seems like a Quicktime problem.
I'm in column view in the Finder. I click on an AVI or other Quicktime-compatible file, and nothing shows up in the preview or Quicklook. All I get is that spinning "loading" image, but it never loads the video.
I have Perian installed. I removed Perian, but the problem persists.
I'd appreciate any help.

I also tried this (deleting the Quicklook cache) and no luck, still the same issue.
I did a clean installation and this works
However, I did again the installation and imported my USER profile in FULL via the assistant when you first configured Snow Leopard (using an FULL BACKUP copy and/or Time Machine Backup) and then problem reappears
I have reinstalled DivX, Desinstalled RealPlayer deinstalled Perian and still the same issue. I cannot see the Thumbnails or the Cover Flow of the video/movie file such MPG, MPG, AVI, WMV but it works for MP4 I have for my IPod
I finally gave up and left this last installation and I did not have the energy to migrate my data, emails, settngs, etc manually.
By the way, the upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8 towards Snow Leopard 10.6 was smooth but the performance was awful specially after installing 10.6.1. With the upgrade I had the same issue with my USER account or with any, NO THUMBSNAILs for most of my videos enough though they are played correctly in Quicktime and Quicklook....

Those sites take a long time to load for me (almost a minute)
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache.
*Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)
Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

is there any program that will open this file, that came with my new iMac?

I have just bought an ipad2 and was told that I could transfer all my saved photos from an old computer that I didn't want to synch with and then delete the ones I didn't want later. I can't do this without synching. How do I do this?

I bought an ipod2 yesterday and all the photos were from an old computer (that I don't want to synch with) were transferred in the store without synching with it. I was told I could delete any I didn't want later but now find I can't delete any without synching through itunes which I don't want to do as I want to synch with a different computer. Is there a way I can just delete them all before I go and buy any apps etc or just restore to the shop settings and start again with a more selective upload as I now have over 8000 photos clogging up the memory when I only need about 1000.
Would really appreciate some advice

Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view.
Photos that were synced from a computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing. If you want to remove them all then normally you could just sync an empty folder (in terms of photos) to the iPad, but as you don't want to sync at the moment you can't do that.
You can reset the iPad back to factory settings and start from scratch with it : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings
