I dont know if this has anything to do with it but...
I went away on a road trip this past weekend and it just so happened that my iPhone's battery was extremely low. I turned it off so it didn't fully run out. When I got to the hotel and plugged it in, it said that I needed to restore. Okay fine, a hassle, but nothing I cant live through.
When i get home today and plug my iPhone into my computer to begin the restore process, iTunes recognizes the iPhone, but an error message comes up saying:
"iTunes cannot activate your iPhone because the SIM card is not inserted or a SIM PIN is required.
Disconnect your iPhone, make sure the SIM card is inserted correctly and, if you use a SIM PIN, tap Unlock to enter it, and then reconnect your iPhone."
The iPhone doesn't show up in the sources list in iTunes either.Since i dont use a SIM PIN (or atleast I dont think i do), the first thing i tried was to reseat the SIM card. No dice, the same thing happens. After a minute of being on the iPhone usually resets itself also.
Can anyone help me with this problem? Maybe another way to restore my iPhone?

After researching a little more I came across a post on another forum that led me to force the restore.
Warning: Doing this will lose any data stored on the internal drive. However, any data synced with iTunes can be restored.

Is there a way to backup iphone when error message says restore needed

My iphone is with Verizon Wireless. This morning I lost service to the phone and when I attempted to restart it it has a message saying restore needed, telling me to plus it into iTunes. I've plugged it in to iTunes but iTunes is not recognizing my phone. Is there something else I can try? Verizon is sending me a new phone but I do not have a recent backup of this one.

The passcode is needed only when you try to restore unsing a computer the phone never synced with before. Restore using the computer you sync with.
Questions: Why don't you know your own passcode, and why don't you have possetion of the computer the phone syncs with?

IPhone says "Restore Needed", but iTunes doesn't recognize it. Now what?

My iPhone was sitting untouched this evening. When I woke it up, it said "Restore Needed. iPhone cannot make or receive calls. Restore from iTunes." But when I plug it in to my computer, iTunes doesn't recognize it. I have reset the phone to no avail. What do I do next?

Thanks for the reply. I tried everything suggested. Now when I try to restore the iPhone from iTunes, it says the iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (23).
I give up.
Would it be better to take the phone to the AT&T store where I bought it, or to an Apple store?

IPhone Crashed-Says Restore Needed-Can't Enter Password to Restore!

Earlier today while using my iPhone with Telenav, it suddenly just quit working! It felt hot and wouldn't come back on for a few mins. When it did come back on, it said Restore needed. However, when I connect iPhone to computer, iTunes cannot connect because of password!!! iPhone will NOT allow me to enter password! Shows iTunes or iPod Screen on phone and will only allow me to make emergency call! This phone is my life!!! My whole life is INSIDE this one! Calendar, numbers, documents etc!!!! I feel lost! How can I restore when I cannot enter password to connect?? HELP PLEASE!! It is the first of the 3GS phones and have NEVER had a minutes problem until now and it is nearl 4 years old I think! Has 32GB.

Thanks - I tried that just now. Didn't work. The passcode prevents the phone from being accessed. I have no idea what the guy used when he did it before but it was like magic.. there was a green button, he clicked it, the password screen went away and the iPhone home screen just popped up like nothing - I wish I could figure this out. If this program could override the password it would be absolutely perfect. Any other suggestions?

IPhone 4 - Says 'Restore Needed'

I have had this phone for months and I'm in love with it - I've never had a problem. But, the last few days it's been super glitchy and yesterday a message popped up telling me that I could not recieve any incoming calls or make any outgoing calls. I can't text either, but occasionally I get a text from someone. Not often. But it's happened twice. It tells me to connect with iTunes to restore, and I do - but the phone keeps turning on and off and when I'm attempting to restore it, it turns off and iTunes pops up with a message saying 'device not recognized' sometimes it says something about try a different disk, sometimes it says the device can not be found. I don't know what to do, I obviously can't call and talk to Apple Support, I'm screwed at the moment! Any help at all would be greatly appreciated AND I am not very tech saavy so please be patient if you try to help and it doesn't click

It's not obvious at all. If you mean you can't call from your phone, call from another one. Make an appointment at the genius bar and take it in for them to look at.

My iPhone will not work unless I plug it into my wall charger, It is fully charged but only works when it is plugged in to wall charger. When it is turned on it say "Restore needed iphone can not make or receive calls' i tried plugging it up to Itunes but it will not turn on to sync.

First try a hard reset, press and hold the power button and home buttons until the phone restarts and displays the Apple Logo, then let go.
If that doesn't work...
Try forcing recovery mode and then restore with iTunes.

Help!! Iphone 3 restore needed!! - keeping data

HELP!!!! my iphone 3 is displaying a msg saying "restore needed" i have no signal from a network (which i have already spoken to them about) and iphone tells me to plug into itunes. When i plug it in, my computer asks me to unlock my phone, i am unable to do this as my phone has locked me out, allowing emergency calls only. Has happened to me buddy..... But there are a few ways to get around it.
1)
- Take your iPhone and hold sleep/wake button + home button....
- Your iPhone should power off then reboot, when it reboots release both buttons..
**soo if that didnt work try this... And this is the last thing u can do**
2)
- Hold sleep wake/button + home button again
- But when iPhone reboots ONLY RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON DO NOT TAKE YOUR FINGER OFF THE HOME BUTTON
- This should put your iPhone into recovery mode. (At this point if you plugged it ino the the computer it would read it)
— When You do the step above your iPhone should have the iTunes sync on the screen which is what we want, do not get worried when you see that.
- Return and do step (1) above
After that your iPhone should be good to go and actually not need a restore haha

Iphone says restore but doesn't appear in itunes.

i was using my iphone when all of a sudden it shut off. when it came back on it showed the symbol that suggests i needed to connect it to itunes, even though it was already connected and just wasn't showing up. it will only let me make emergency calls and says imei: unknown and iccid: unknown. originally it just said that i needed to enter a pass code, but the phone isn't showing up in itunes and i can't do anything on the phone except for make emergency calls so i can't enter a passcode. now it's saying restore needed but again, when i connect it to my computer it won't show up in itunes.
help please? i don't know what to do. i've had my iphone for about a year and a half, and i got it from rogers, it wasn't like a jailbreak phone or anything, and it was working fine up until today when out of the blue this happened. anything i can do?

Restore needed but can not

After I have uploaded 4.3.3, I have had hard reset. Then a small screen saying restore needed has appeared. But Itunes cannot restore the Ipad. The error message is" we are sorry, we are unable to continue your activation... "

Hi guys,
this morning my Iphone 4 came up with a message on the screen saying it needed to be restored, i thought it was strange so i rebooted my phone.
Then it just went to the 'connect to itunes' screen like it was a new phone.
I attempted to restore and failed a couple times, finally it seems to have worked but wont activate?
any ideas would be great!
