If you have your iPod set to transfer your music manually, then that “do not disconnect” message will continue to be displayed on your iPod until you manually eject it.
You can do this by clicking on the little eject icon next to the iPod listing in the source window of iTunes, or right click on it and select “eject”. There is also an iPod 'eject' icon in the lower right hand corner of iTunes. Another way would be to use the “safely remove hardware” icon in the system tray next to the clock (looks like a grey rectangle with a green arrow above it). Click on this then select your iPod. Or through Windows, select start/my computer, right click on the iPod, select eject.
If you have your iPod set to automatically sync with iTunes version 7 or later, connect the iPod and when you see the summary screen, uncheck the box marked "enable disk use".
If you are using an earlier version of iTunes, right click on the iPod in the source list, select options and uncheck the same box.
In future your iPod should automatically disconnect after it’s finished transferring music.

  • Won't show up on mac and say "do not disconnect"

Hi, I've had my 60 GB iPod for about a year now and suddenly now it won't show up on my desktop when I plug it in. The iPod screen says "do not disconnect" though, and after I just pull it out the message doesn't go away and I have to wait for the power to die before I can use it again. Is it starting to break down?

Homer...this very same thing has happened to me today. Have you found a solution yet?

  • Ipod says "do not disconnect" but is not recognized by itunes

Okay so, I've connected my ipod to my computer and it's not being recognized. On my nano's screen it says "Do not disconnect" and has the red circle no sign flashing on it. I've updated my version of itunes, restarted my ipod, and have restarted my computer multiple times.
It can't be the USB because quite obviously it's working... it has to either be with my macbook or my ipod.
    What's going on here?

I am having the same problem and I tried everything to fix it. On top of that problem, my iPod won't turn off, and will only play half of a song and then skip to the next song which is very maddening! Can anyone help?

  • My iPod classic is saying "do not disconnect" but neither my MacBook Pro or iTunes is recognizing that it is plugged in.  What can I do?

About 2 weeks ago my iPod told me that something (I forget what now) was corrupt and my iPod had to be restored to factory settings, so I did that.  Before I had a chance to resync my iPod, my harddrive in my MacBook Pro crashed and had to be replaced.  Now when I try connecting my iPod classic, my iPod says "do not disconnect" but neither my laptop or iTunes is recognizing that my iPod is plugged in.  I have tried using another cord, restarting my iPod, restarting my laptop, iTunes is up to date...what else is there that I can do to get my iPod to connect to my laptop?
    Thanks in advance!

Try a system reset, hold down the off button until it turns of and then back on again, this might not work though if it is properly stuck. If all else fails go to Apple

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.

Be good to know what the diagnostic results are.
I've also just run into an issue where I couldn't restore an iPod with a corrupt file system, and the "super fix" in that linked article wasn't working for me. I've run across a potentially useful workaround.
iPod Classic went on the fritz today just after syncing. Couldn't restore via iTunes, kept getting 1439 errors, Windows wouldn't format as FAT32, claimed the "Volume is too big for FAT32". Finally tracked down EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition (Free) and formatted as FAT32 with 128k clusters. The iPod is filling back up again. Might be worth a shot here...

  • My Ipod keeps saying "Do not disconnect" and the update ipod is not working

    Hi,
I just got my ipod nano a couple of days ago and after loading the itunes and then plugging in the ipod i unplugged it when it said do not disconnect without thinking. Now when i plug in my nano it keeps saying do not disconnect and although the ipod symbol appears on the itunes, no instructions have popped up to explain how the music transfers even though it says it in the booklet and when i click file the update ipod button isn't clickable. I'm just wondering if there's anything i could do

    Welcome to the discussions.

Thank you very much, i read the link on the manual and my preference was set to manually manage songs and after reading it i was able to put a couple of songs on to the ipod which is a lot better than where i was about an hour ago lol
    Thank you

  • No matter what I do - it always says "DO NOT DISCONNECT" when I conncect

As soon as I hook it up to my computer - it goes to the Do Not Disconnect screen and just stays there forever. I left it on over night and it still said it. I've reset it and it still says it.

    Hi pmason09!
The following is from the "iPod User Guide".
If You Want to Disconnect iPod, but the Screen Says “Do not disconnect”
    • If iPod is transferring music, wait for the transfer to complete.
    • Select iPod in the iTunes Source list and click the Eject button.
    • If iPod disappears from the iTunes Source list, but you still see the “Do not
disconnect” message on the iPod screen, go ahead and disconnect iPod.
    • If iPod doesn’t disappear from the iTunes Source list, drag the iPod icon from the desktop to the Trash (if you’re using a Mac) or click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray and select your iPod (if you’re using a Windows PC). If you still see the “Do not disconnect” message, restart your computer and eject iPod again.
However, when I had the same problem as you describe, the following worked for me:
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn’t set to go to sleep.
    Hope this helps!

  • A little help! IPod plugged in to usb but does not say "do not disconnect"

So im trying to use my mini after a couple years, it works fine. When I plug it in, it begins to charge and still workes fine. But it does not say "do not disconnect" and is not recognized by the computer. It use to work fine a coupleyears ago, could it just be my cable, or maybe my ipod wire to plug in? I dont think there is anything wrong with my usb, comments needed, thanx

Try a reset on the iPod.
Just the other day my daughter's friend's nano would charge on my Mac but not show up at all. A simple reset of the nano fixed that.

  • Always says "do not disconnect"?

Fifth gen IPOD, always shows the "do not disconnect" warning; It used to show the full battery screen when the ipod had been connected for sufficient time, say overnight, but now it always says do not disconnect unless I manually disconnect through Itunes. Is this something to worry about?

My ipod started to only show the do not disconnect screen after itunes said it was a corrupt ipod. Neither disconnecting the ipod with itunes or windows changes anything. It is starting to annoy me.

  • Used IPod Updater - IPod keeps saying Do Not Disconnect

I had to restore my IPod because of an issue with it. Now when I plug the IPod into my computer it says I need to use the IPod Updater to update my software. I did this last nite at 6 PM and it still says Do Not Disconnect. It has been almost 12 hrs. Help! I would like to use it on my business trip coming up.

Updating the iPod software shouldn’t take any longer than a few minutes.
First of all, try clicking on the little x in the top corner, which might take you to the next stage in the process. Sometimes it gets stuck.
If this doesn’t work, shut down the computer, disconnect the iPod, restart the computer, run the updater again, and connect the iPod when prompted.

  • Nano keeps saying "do not disconnect"

I have up loaded songs and my itunes recognizes my nano just fine but everytime I plug it in it just keeps saying "do not disconnect" and it never goes away. Even after it syncs and the battery is completely charged. I don't know if maybe I'm doing something wrong or even hurting my ipod.
    Please help.

Have a look in "My Computer" and see if it is listing your iPod in there. Alternatively try using the "Safely Remove Hardware" function on Windows. That should disconnect the iPod and allow you to unplug it.
To find iPod options, in iTunes click on "EDIT" then "PREFERENCES" then "iPod" then "Music" You should have a list of options:-
Automatically update all songs and playlists
    Automatically update selected playlists only
    Manually manage songs and playlists
If the third option is checked then it will not disconnect automatically.
Lower down the page are more options
    Only update checked songs
Open iTunes when this iPod is connected
    Enable disk use
Display album artwork on your iPod
If "Enable disk use" is checked, then again it will not disconnect automatically.
To manually disconnect, right click on your iPod's name and then left click on eject.
If that lot doesn't work, then that is the limit of my expertise.
